Would like one that is pretty much as new. I ordered a 130 when I installed

getting the left arm a few mm closer to the stay.

Phil will sell me a new 127.5 for $165, or replace the 130 spindle proper
with a 127.5 for $87.50, plus 2-way postage, but I thought I'd check onlist
first.

Thanks.

[RBW] Smooth Factor of lighter rim brake steel forks

2018-03-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
Today’s ride, like many of mine, is roughly equal parts paved, dirt, and trail.
Compass tires cush the whole ride, but the front fork absorbs a lot of the
bigger bumps on dirt and trail. I’ve noticed this for a while, but on the (now
really bad) wash board dirt road sections, the fork is compliant and absorbing.
This led me to ponder a number of questions I toss out to see where they go...

— Would a stiffer (because they have to be) disk brake fork absorb as much?
— How much of the “required” mindset for shock absorption on gravel and MTB
bikes is the result of disk brakes requiring a stiffer fork? (I suspect
marketing and “latest gen tech” mentality is likely the biggest factor).

Patrick

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day! Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-03-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
Great point, Jeremy. When I called my LBS to ask about 650b wheels for my
wife’s Clementine build, the owner, who started the shop 25 years ago, was at
first baffled by the rim brake rim request. When he called me back, Velocity
build, for nearly twice what Rivendell was selling the same build. This
deserves a new thread, but I was struck today by how much rough stuff
absorbtion happens through the fork, and it’s hard to picture that happening as
well through a beefy disk brake fork.

Patrick

Great build! I would contend that in this day and age, any new
multi-surface bike that doesn't use disc brakes owes something to
Rivendell, since they are some of the last holdouts supporting rim brakes
with plump tires.

The things I specifically like about the MR30 are:

they come in 172.5mm length (rare in 1x11 mountain cranks)
they look nice (especially with a silver ring and pink extractors)
White Industries is a generous sponsor of Norcal High School Mountain Bike
Racing League
Black Mountain Cycles stocks them

I don't have answers to your other questions about 'stiffer' or 'greater
power transfer'. They are cranks, RIDE! Grin.

although I announced I was at N+0 a year ago, and there's a new bike in the

If you need a home for a 59 Black Mountain road, I suppose I'd like to know

more money. Hmmmn. Maybe that was bad planning.

Still no photos, but all I have left to do is wrap the bars. I will maybe
start a new thread when the bars are wrapped. I wanted to update this
thread on the weight topic. I cut the steertube down by 78g, and that
leaves 10cm above my threadless stem at the max height I would want. I may
cut it again after some shake down rides.

The total weight came in at 24.3lbs. That doesn't mean a lot without a
build list, which I'll post soon.

I'm not too concerned about it. I'm very careful with installation of all

Re: [RBW] Re: BB Spindle Length for Sam/RH Crank

2018-03-14 Thread Jan Heine
The chrome on the bolts shouldn't flake off. You need to tighten those
bolts quite hard to seat the cranks properly. If the chrome flakes off,
that is a manufacturing defect – probably a little cutting oil residue
coating the surface during the chroming bath – and we'll replace the bolts
under warranty.

Re: [RBW] Re: Analog Cycles Moving Sale

2018-03-14 Thread Analog Cycles Frederick, MD
Hi Bruce,

Here's a quickish blurb about the sale. PDF is attached. What we really
want to move are frames, ideally with at least partial builds attached to
them. If you want a unique, high quality build at a good price, awesome.
We can help with that. We do tubeless wheels, 1x set ups, really good
dynamo set ups, custom fitting, custom bar tape, ultra wide range gearing
solutions, etc. Here's the rub: If this sale is super successful, these
builds will take us sometime, so you have to be patient. It'll always be
first come first built, as long as we get the parts in a timely fashion.
To that end, here's how pricing will work:

   - Get a frame from us: we'll give you a discount on it.

   - Get a frame and partial build, IE drivetrain and brakes, we'll give
you a better discount on the frame, and a bit of a break on the drivetrain
   stuff.

   - Get a frame and wheels, no drivetrain, see above.

   - Get a frame and complete or most of a complete (IE you provide pedals
or saddle that sort of thing), we'll get you a really good deal on the
frame, and a better deal on the rest of the parts.

For parts: If you get rims, and want us to build wheels, better deal on
rims, and so on.

Shipping: We will charge you exactly what it costs us. So if we need to
buy a box for your bike to go in, your price will be box+shipping, no
extras. We ship bikes and wheels via bike flights and you can do full
insurance or none or partial, just let us know up front.

We have a big pile of weird vintage or semi vintage parts that will be at
the yardsale. It's honestly a daunting pile, and I dont have the time to
inventory it all. If you want to look at that stuff, you have to come
right to the yard sale.

Email me for pricing, or with questions. I have ridden and repeatedly
built every style frame listed here, at least twice. Most styles I have
built at least 10 of. We know how to make these things fit, ride well, and
last.

Last thing: Analog is moving to Vermont. Our new shop is going to be off
the grid. It will be focused just on custom builds, parts and bags, with a
few accessories. Going forward, all decisions will be based around
lessening the shops environmental impact. We appreciate your support.
Analog is just two people, trying to make bikes that are beautiful and that
will last. We're about as grass roots as you can get. We hope to prove
ourselves worthy of your time and investment.

Thank you!

James
