[RBW] Re: Hillborne Questions...

2018-03-31 Thread Adam in Indiana
I think I am leaning toward installing a spacer on the driveside bearing... It
occurred to me that, since the Sam has 135mm rear spacing, adding a 1.5 or 2mm
spacer would line the chain up better with the middle of the cassette, anyway.

At least, it sounds good on paper...

Nice report and photos Austin. What a great day for a ride around these

Not too far.

[RBW] FS: 59 Clem H - Grilver

2018-03-31 Thread tc

Bike has less than 20 miles on it - really! Bought new in Feb this year.

   - Standard Riv 'complete' build, $1600 (here

).

Yep, I know they're selling new for $1,450 now, dang it.
   - Jones loop bar, Alum, 710, silver: $119 (here
   )
   - Nitto UI-12 stem, 60mm reach: $52 (here

   )
   - Jones Kraton grips: $20 (here
   )
   - 2x Vittoria Mezcal TNT 2.35" tires: $130 (here
   )

Shimano Saint pedals not included, nor bottle cage.

I'm asking $1,500 for the bike itself, as-is -- plus whatever packing
($50?) and shipping ($75?) costs. Contact me off-list if you have
questions, would like to discuss components. I'm somewhat flexible on
price depending on the components you might be interested in, or not.

I'm selling it because my single track options around here have too many
roots, bumps, etc. for *my* comfort on a fully rigid bike. I shoulda known
better. Today's ride convinced me this is not the bike for me where I'd
want to ride it.

HOWEVER -- the Clem rolls very smoothly and confidently on pavement and
packed paths. I can see why people who like a more upright ride like the
Clem for roads and paths. But that's not what I got this bike for.

More pictures here .

Thanks for looking,
Tom

[RBW] Ride Report: Sam Hillborne gravel (under)biking?

2018-03-31 Thread Deacon Patrick
Sweet, Austin! I love the Albastache in blue. Well done. Isn’t the flow of
those bars delightful on the descent (and the climb too, but less so for the
slower speeds). The feel of picking your line, not thinking but just looking,
and riding a rail that magically appears on that line. You’ll know you’ve gone
full nutter when the climb is as much a reward as the top or the descent. Grin.

I gave up trying to figure where the line for underbiking is. As you alude to,
people ride absurd bikes on rides they don’t need them. Besides, many are
“sponsored” riders, and my goals are different (have fun), though I’m always
surprised how many I pass along the way. Bike skills matter far more than the
perfect gear for a limited use. They can’t ride their bike to the trail easily,
but I do, and then I ride the trail and enjoy the whole thing. Grin.

Isn’t the change in altitude wondrous? Especially on the cusp between seasons.
Keep enjoying the ride!

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Ride Report: Sam Hillborne gravel (under)biking?

2018-03-31 Thread Austin B.
 When does it become underbiking?

I did my first, full-fledged gravel ride on my Sam Hillborne v2.0, Gravel
Mode.

Weather was 50-60 degrees, sunny, perfect. I road up the mountain north of
Frederick MD (locals will know it as the Mountaindale right fork up
Gambrill Park Rd). I won’t describe it extensively as others on the web
have already done that including James from Analong (formerly Gravel &
Grind).

My 36t cog saw a lot of action for the first time today! Combined with a
30t chainring up front, gearing didn’t leave me yearning for just one more
gear during my unloaded ascent up 1100’ of dirt road that is in need of
some attention following winter. Potholes filled with muddy water, large
rocks exposed through runoff, and some recently downed trees & branches
made it interesting. At the top, a plateau along the ridge was waiting for
me. Short trees, no signs of humans, no sounds of birds, and not a speck of
green from Spring at that elevation. Desolate. Even a little eerie, like
the scene at the start of Planet of the Apes where Charlton Heston is
wandering, looking for signs of life.

The descent was the reward, the pinnacle of today’s ride. Half because of
the reprieve from 1100’ of continual climbing, half because of the thrill
of picking a line and heavy braking, half because of the sound and sight of
the rapids flowing parallel to the road. As Jerry Seinfeld said “How can
you go wrong?" Totally worth the effort.

I don’t know if I was underbiking or just biking, but my Sam proved worthy
of the challenge despite the only other bikes up there being suspension MTB
bikes. My newly-wrapped green Albastache bars worked brilliantly helping to
dodge & weave to keep to the smoothest line possible. My hands never
cramped, never went numb as I shifted hand-position often like I do on
drops. My 2x9 with a 30x36 low gear got the job done and should be adequate
for most anything I encounter in the Mid-Atlantic. The 42mm Cazaderos,
sluggish on the pavement, took everything I threw at them on the gravel as
if to say “That all you got?" Maybe a heavier frame and a wider tire and
different geometry would've made things a bit easier, but I didn't feel
limited in any way on my Sam. I am newly impressed at all that this bike
can do.

Ultimately, I had a peaceful, enjoyable spring day of exploring places I’d
never gone. And I was able to avoid my 45-year-old body accidentally coming
in sudden contact with 2 billion-year-old stone.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

And, congratulations on a year's worth of commuting, even in the snow.

I don't think you ought to regret paying for a SON and top-quality light;
you are still south of $4K, you have a beautiful vehicle that will last for
decades; and most of all you are enjoying your commutes -- if cycling isn't
fun, then why bother? -- instead of cursing traffic as you drive a car.

I'm fortunate that I can do most of my errands by bike, and that I live in
a place where winters are mild (we get cold weather -- down to the teens --
but little precipitation -- ABQ, NM).

2018-03-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Even a stable full of more or less expensive customs, plus all the kit --
extra wheels, tires, parts; then the tools; then the clothing, winter and
summer -- add all this up and you are still quite a bit south of, or no
more than eye level with, the price of the average family sedan or F 150.

I realize that you could fill your garage with $10K+ dentist bikes*, but
I'm talking custom Rivendells. I guess that I would have to stretch to pay
$6K for the most expensive of mine.

* I'm being snide. I may be wrong; there may be a good reason why some
bikes cost $10 or $12K, please inform me if I'm wrong.

Yes, Switzerland is a rather beautiful country. I don't live there but one
of my brothers does, and I go cycling there fairly frequently. It's not all
mountains, either. One of the national cycle routes traverses the country
from East to West (or the other way) past a lot of the lakes, and while you
see a lot of mountains, you don't actually climb anything more than a few
hills: https://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/cycling-in-switzerland/route-09.html.
