Thank to all for the compliments and advice. I'm trying to tie this up in
one fell swoop and not part it out due to my time constraints.

Re: [RBW] Re: Frame geometry

2018-04-22 Thread Eric Daume
I don't agree with his conclusions. He says that bikes can have lower trail
now because they are stiffer:

"Companies wouldn’t put bikes with so little trail on the road if the forks
weren’t significantly stiffer than they used to be. You need precise
handling in order to control a fork that steers so quickly. "

That doesn't exactly jive with the typical Bicycle Quarterly ride, that
combines low trail with the most flexible frame and fork available.

I'm also curious how many riders could detect a 5mm change in bottom
bracket drop, which seems like a watershed event to this guy.

[RBW] Active warm-ups and stretching

2018-04-22 Thread tc
As I get older my body gets better at reminding me to warm up before I do
anything remotely athletic ... and stretch afterward.

Those of us over 30 or so (I'm over 55) were likely taught to 'cold
stretch' before athletics, which has since been pretty well shot down in
recent years by those advocating doing an 'active warm-up' before exercise
instead of stretching. It seems stretching reduces muscular strength,
which you of course don't want; and, if your muscles are too cold, you may
end up pulling something -- a horrible way to start a bike ride or whatever
you set out to do.

But I've found that I still need to stretch some about 5-7 miles into a
ride, particularly my lower back and hamstrings. So, what has worked for
me is to jump rope, do some body weight squats, lunges, light kettlebell
swings, and maybe good ol' jumping jacks for about 5-10 min's to warm up my
muscles before a ride ... then ride about 5-7 miles ... and *then *do some
light stretching of my hams, glutes, and hips. Doing the light stretching
after riding a while, giving the muscles a chance to warm up, really
increases my flexibility, feels great, and sets me up to be way more
comfortable for the rest of my ride, no matter how long it ends up being.

When I'm back home, I spend at least 15-20 minutes stretching out while my
body is still warm.

Approaching warm-ups and stretching like this has kept me in the game
without pain or injuries for the past 12 months, and I rarely feel the
tightness I once did after riding.

Years ago a chiropractor friend recommended this book on stretching, so I
thought I'd pass it along in case it may help some of you. It's really the
best I've seen on the subject:
Stretching
,

by Bob Anderson (I see it's now offered as a 30th anniversary edition, so
he must be helping a lot of people)

Here's my Sam, patiently waiting as I stretch at the 6-3/4 mile mark this
morning. This is a convenient place to stop and stretch because that
concrete block wall steps down behind where I'm taking this photo to a
level where I can extend a leg straight out, rest my heel on a block, and
slowly, easily s - t - r - e - t - c - h those warmed-up hamstrings and
back muscles.

Here's to flexibility and pain-free rides!
Tom

[RBW] FS: Rosco Bubbe v2 (x-post iBOB)

2018-04-22 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Hi Rivsters - I'm continuing a downsizing effort of my bike fleet, and I'm
ready to find a new home for my Rosco Bubbe v2. I just listed this on my
local Craigslist (Washington DC), would prefer a local sale, and I'm
willing to drive to meetup with a buyer in the area if need be. That said,
shipping is an option at buyers expense, but local buyers will get a
priority.

I'm offering the bike as a complete build for $1050, which is how much it
went for from Riv as a frame/fork/headset/seatpost. The build is Riv-ish
though a bit frugal for some bits, and everything is in darn good or
like-new condition. I'd say I have less than 500 miles logged - I don't
keep good records, but I'm sure that's a safe number to go with.

Re: [RBW] Frame geometry

2018-04-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for this; very interesting. Interesting too that the trail figure is
exactly that of my Matthews with 700C X 61 mm (actual) tires (71.5, 55,
700C X 61). And, further, interesting that, while Merckx was 2-3 inches
taller than I, the featured frame would fit me like a glove. I probably am
at least as long in the torso as he, and like my bar considerably higher.

My brother told me recently that one of the best handling bikes of the many
he's owned -- he included his RB-1 and a few other classics -- was an
Italian marque from the period in question.

I'll be interested in hearing others' opinions about the author's thoughts
on the handling of such stage racer-type bikes -- ie, whether y'all find
such bikes to handle the way he describes -- and how this handling (ie,
that he describes for Merckx's 1970 bike) differs from bikes most of us are
familiar with today -- Roadeo, Bleriot, BMC Road; etc.

Aye, Patrick, I have, from you and/or others on this group of wild wisdom!
Though I lament it’s hidden articles I have difficulty finding becuase the

the Muttonmasters article — what a fantastic read!

Aye, my high gear on Shadowfax is 61” and the road decents are slowed for it. I
find it a great opportunity to take in the views I don’t usually see for my

Re: [RBW] Tale of two rides

2018-04-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Patrick: Have you read this, or have you any interest in it? I used to
enjoy it back when it was active. It was this that led me to try (very
briefly) fixed off road, but I couldn't stand 60" downhill and on tailwind
flats, and with a 175 mm crank, no less.

The attitude is somewhat *epater la bourgeoisie,* but it's fun nonetheless.

One of my favorites is the KHS track bike/26" fixie/front drum brake/off
road conversion.

I keep links to people and places and things, though I know they may have
been quiet for awhile, even quite awhile. Keeping the links seems
important though, bread crumbs in their way, back to times, back to wild
yet simple thoughts and times and choices and doing.

Anyway, in my morning ramblings, I found that Kent Peterson, a hero in my
way of thinking of heroes, had updated his blog with a poem subtitled "a
rant for Grant". And so it is... I know some people know of Kent and will
appreciate not only the words but the re-finding...

Anyone else have news of people not heard from for awhile but valued,
remembered and looked for nevertheless?
