[RBW] Re: Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2018-05-05 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Apparently wrote my message in the middle of quoted text before so trying that
again...
Thought I’d share another Jones equipped Riv Clem H... a 65cm beast named Lil’
Herman Clemmington. I’m reviving an old thread but was all set to start my own
with a longer narrative but accidentally lost it all when I went to switch over
to desktop mode from mobile so that I could attach a photo... hadn’t tried
making the switch mid post before and didn’t realize text got wiped like that
and I’m not inclined to rewrite everything at the moment. Hope the pic loads
ok but if not I’ll delete. This is at our local park alongside an old radio
tower foundation where first international phone calls were made pre-WWII.
Lots of these ruins out in the grasses along a stretch of trail.

I think it’d more likely be Jack O. Lope or Jack O’Lope. Or maybe Lopes or

Totally reasonable. I've dropped Grant another line asking. I didn't want
to be a pest, but I suppose asking twice in six months probably isn't all
that bad.

I feel conflicted! I gladly downloaded the PDFs you posted, Jim, as it
nearly completes my collection. Happy to do my part and share mine as long
as I know no feelings will be hurt and no $$ will be lost over at RBW HQ.

[RBW] Pedal Retention Questions

2018-05-05 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Never tried power grips but I’m using HoldFast with spiked VP pedals and I find
they work very well for my needs with fixed gear riding and easy enough to pull
my foot out when necessary. Through two winters of moderate use they are
frayed and showing signs of wear from occasionally dragging in between mounts
and dismounts but still holding up well. I also love how they are easily
readjusted for thicker shoes with just the upper Velcro strap (I initially
installed with thicker shoes so the strap just gets tightened more with my
thinner soles.

[RBW] DC Workers Ride Info

2018-05-05 Thread Eric Norris
The 2017 DC Workers Ride is just six days away! I look forward to seeing you
all at the start at the Veterans Center (https://goo.gl/maps/T4gkeqSFUXR2
) on 14th Street at 5:15 a.m. next Saturday.
We’ll gather, discuss any last-minute details, and head out at 5:30 a.m.

With ride day approaching, here are a few items of note:

— We’ll have 20+ riders this year! That’s a record! Word is getting out that
the Workers Ride is a great alternative to the “actual” DC—less crowded, more
congenial, and with great support.

— As always, our sag vehicle will carry an assortment of drinks and rest stop
snacks, including Gatorade and an assortment of soft drinks (as well as water).
A reminder that your sag driver Bruce Finley is a volunteer, and will be
working as hard as we are on our bikes.

— Regarding pace: We will ride at a comfortable, yet brisk, pace, staying
together as much as possible with regroups at rest stop and other locations.
Regroup places usually are:

Forbes Home (Rest stop 1)
Top of Monticello Dam
Pope Valley Grange Hall
Middletown High School (Rest stop 4)
Big Canyon (rest stop 5)
LUNCH is in Middletown—most riders opt for McDonalds, but you can pick
your own place or keep on riding
Top of Resurrection (Rest stop 6)
Guinda fire station (Rest stop 7)
Forbes Home (Rest stop 8)
Plainfield fire station (rest stop 9)

— We generally finish the ride in 15-16 hours. We will stop and regroup at the
official rest stop locations.

— Weather is looking HOT, with highs around 90 and lows in the mid-50s. Be sure
to bring enough clothing to keep yourself warm in the early morning and evening
hours, but be ready for the heat later in the day. Bring and wear sunscreen!

— Given the weather, you should carry at least two bottles of water. If you
require more fluids, consider a third bottle or a Camelbak—keep in mind that
the climbs after Clearlake are long and exposed, and will probably be the
hottest part of the ride. There is no water on this part of the course, so be
prepared.

— Bring lights and reflective gear. We will start before sunrise, and most of
us will finish after dark. You will need legal, working lights. Please do not
show up and rely on others with lights to light the way! This is dangerous.
Make sure your lights are charged (if you’re using batteries) or that you have
extra batteries.

— We will follow the official DC route. You can view the route and download a
GPS track for your bike computer here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/20709288
I’ll have printed copies of the cue
sheet at the start.

That’s it for now. If you have any questions, email me, or call 530-574-4875

See you in a week!

2018-05-05 Thread René Sterental
Thanks again for every suggestion and insight, and especially to the super
awesome person who had a bike map delivered/dropped at the hotel for me. I
wish you had signed your name, as I certainly was touched by the gesture.
Regrettably, the work plans got all complicated and I ended up leaving the
bike home. However, I expect to be able to make some room on Monday to rent
a bike and go for a ride.

With all the new guidelines and suggestions plus my brand new map, I’ll
certainly try to ensure I can bring my bike whenever another chance comes
up to come to DC.

You guys all rock!

Re: [RBW] Re: Shipping handlebars

2018-05-05 Thread Paul Brodek
The problem with road bars is there's a lot of air in the boxes they fit,
and not much weight. I shipped a few 48cm Noodles recently, and just used
some boxes I had received other bars in. USPS Priority was maybe $12-$15 to
nearby states, $20 +/- to the West Coast from NJ.

I don't have any empty bar boxes on hand anymore, and figured out that
24x8x8in boxes should be good for wide Noodles. Uline sells a pack of 25
for $1.06 or so each.

Just me, but I wouldn't be comfortable sending bubble-wrapped/bagged bars
unboxed, especially across state lines.

Can't help much with flat bars. I'd guess that mostly-straight flat bars
could go in USPS poster-sized boxes, or round tubes. For upright,
backswept, priest-style bars you'd need something wider, and hope to keep
it as flat as possible to minimize shipping costs.

I'm going to step up once more with a recommendation for Blackspire
pedals.
On their website, you'll find a $22 (Canadian) rebuild service.
That entire cost is the return International Priority shipping from Canada
($16 US), and last time I sent them pedals, had them back in one week.
They're still running a 2/3-off sale on their long pedals, the Robusto -
$50 (Canadian).

I'd ask him again. Though if he catches this thread and wants to comment

There were those cork (?) flash drives which had the pdf's. Though since I

If you get the OK, let me know - be happy to land those in the same folder

[RBW] Re: Pedal Retention Questions

2018-05-05 Thread Brian Campbell
I have used both. Now, I don't do off road fixed gear riding but.based
on your goal to keep things simple and knowing the good natured, punishment
your bike(s) endure, I would say the Hold Fast are a better option.

IME the Power Grips have more parts (to fail and lose) and are also a bit
more involved to adjust. I stripped the mounting screw on one of the Power
Grips mounts, trying to get it tight enough. YMMV.

Also given the importance of feedback from your feet for orientaton, know
that the POwer Grips require a tuen & twist motion to get them to "lock" on
to your feet. There is a consierable amount of downward pressure applied to
the top of your feet. Not sure if that might be a complicating issue for
you or not.

The Hold FAst have a simpler and greater range of adjustability in my
opinion. To me they felt similar to a traditional toe clip. The only thing
that was a negative that I recall was sometimes the Hold Fast could sag
when it was wet. It getting you feet in a little more of a chore but not a
deal breaker. Hope that helps!

[RBW] Rivendell Reader PDF Archives

2018-05-05 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
There was a query yonder on the FB about specific editions of the Rivendell
Readers. (They were requesting RR#10, RR#41 and RR#42).

Turns out that the latter two had been uploaded to a Cyclofiend.com archive
folder. Toward the end of the Reader run, they would make a PDF version of
the readers available in addition to the print version. And I stashed these
two here -

RR#42 - http://www.cyclofiend.com/Images/pdf/RR42_web.pdf

RR#41 - http://www.cyclofiend.com/Images/pdf/RR41_web.pdf

As i was searching to see if there were more of these around, I came across
the references and a thread to the sethdot.org project to set up a Reader
archive. I have to say that saddened me a bit, as I realized how long it
had been since Seth Vidal left us way too soon. Sigh. He was quality guy
who I am sad to say I never got to meet in person.

Since my own collection of early Readers had been a bit sporadic (I had
enjoyed the first ones via copies borrowed from someone else, since
returned), I had bought the first CD of Readers way back when. This
included RR#'s 1 through 11. (Yes, it went up to 11...) Since surprisingly
fewer computers these days even can swallow CD's, I thought it prudent to

[RBW] Pedal Retention Questions

2018-05-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
Short version:
It looks like there are two main players in pedal retention straps that play
nice with sandals: Hold Fast or Power Grips. Input and suggestions appreciated.

Long version:
While I love the Catalyst long pedals by Pedaling Innovations, I seem to
destroy them (after my snow ride the other day, screaming squeel that is the
pedal, bearings, I presume?). The pedals are only a few months old.

So, I am going as basic as I can in a pedal, following my basic rule of go as
simple as possible and learn from there. I put on my smaller VP Vice pedals and
wow, I now understand the whole pedal retention thing with fixed hear. With the
large spiked platform, unnecessary. But with a forefoot position on a smaller
pedal, even with spikes, retention is well worth trying.

I have MKS Sylvan pedals coming, in the hopes cone bearings can be easily
adjusted and serviced as I beat them up. Also a pair of same but Stream
narrower pedals to see if that works and increases pedal clearance in a
meaningful way for me.

With abandon,

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-05 Thread ascpgh
Another reason I love my Rambouillet; it makes people speak to me on the
road. Once again as I rode this morning someone spoke out to me about my
creamsicle orange (and 17 years' patina/beausage). I was trying to take a
nominal urban ride but was stumped by the ancillary events to tomorrow's
Pittsburgh Marathon, so I demurred to the river trails and headed away from
the city with one water bottle as my guide.

I stopped to take a picture of the Kennywood roller coaster to text to our
mentee, in her last class of the semester at the moment, because
"Kennywood's open" is a longstanding local euphemism for your fly is
unzipped. A guy rolls by on a Surly 26" disc trucker with Ortliebs, a
Therm-a-rest and Big Agnes stuff sacks, and says "that's way cool".

After I send my picture and get back to riding, I catch up to the guy in a
few miles and ask how far he's going.

"Georgetown" he says.

"How many days?" I ask.

"Four or five" He says.

"Camping, B?" I ask.

"Whatever is there when I'm done" He says.

It was already noon and I knew he was going to be a late arrival to his
best options, so I said I'd show him through the confusion between
McKeesport and Boston.

He was 21 and a two tour Army combat medic reassigned as a med tech in the
Interventional Radiology department at Walter Reed. He was getting pressure
to use leave he's accumulated while deployed so he bought a new bike, some
gear and a one way car to the Southside hostel. It had been such a nice
morning he slept in beyond his imagination and got a very late start.

We talked about smart career planning and military stuff as we rode and I
couldn't help but appreciate how my dumb orange bike opened up a
conversation and the opportunity to help him through the complex front end
of his trip.

Once I had him on the crushed limestone of the GAP in Boston I said
farewell, good luck and provided a few suggestions for sources of food,
services and hot meals along his way. I texted my wife to tell her my
timetable and whereabouts, my water bottle long empty now. I found a
fountain back in McKeesport and got back to the business of going home.

I was thoroughly entertained when I caught up to a small woman on a Kuota
TT bike going my direction on the trail. I didn't drop in on her but rode
to the flank to avoid any accusation of drafting, ringing my bell when
upcoming riders were in need of our passing. She acknowledged that with a
"thanks". Bells aren't de rigeur on CF TT bikes on low spoke count CF
rimmed wheels. When that got boring I passed her and waved.

"That's cool" she said as I rode by.

I think I was around 65 miles when home. I reset to help the through rider
estimate his arrival at key trail towns. All my interactions were
non-competitive, no implied testosterone and jovial. I've been riding this
bike for a long time and it has conditioned me to feel like that's the
normal, but folks I ride with always mention how weird all the comments are
when we are out on a loop. That is cool.

[RBW] Re: Feeling the Rivets

2018-05-05 Thread John Hawrylak
Dave & Others

Back in around 2000, the mad cow event was going thru England resulting in
much younger cows coming to market and their hides being thinner (younger =
thinner hides). I do remember a reference to someone in Brooks being
concerned the hide thickness was approaching their minimum values, due to
the younger cattle. It may have been the same gentleman Dave communicated
with.

I bought a red B17 from Wallingford around the time. Apparently Brooks
made a run of red B-17s for a Dawes project and there was a large surplus,
and Bill Lane passed on the discount. Still have it, but it seems to need
tensioning more often than one I had from an earlier period, probably due
to a slightly thinner hide from the 'mad cows'.

Funny, Bill is retired, but I still have the saddle.

[RBW] Re: Balance Bike Delight

2018-05-05 Thread WETH
Mike,
Put a smile on my face reading about it.

Patrick,
Congrats on the whole family being ready for Clementines!

10 years ago my youngest was struggling to ride a bike. I wasn’t clued into to
balance bikes, so I picked up a 2 wheel razor scooter for $5 at a yard sale.
He learned the principles of balance riding that and then took effortlessly to
a two wheel bike.

All the best,

[RBW] Re: Balance Bike Delight

2018-05-05 Thread Wayne Naha
We started our girls on a balance bike as well. I took a small child's
bike, removed the "training wheels," pedals, and the crank and chain. They
loved it. They would wiz about the yard. One possible drawback was that
after removing the crank, the bike had no brakes, since it was only
equipped with a coaster brake. So when they grew into a pedal bike, they
still tended to stop with the toes of their shoes. It still worked out,
and I was glad they were spared the unnecessary scrapes, bruises, and (in
my case) a chipped tooth in learning to ride the 'traditional' way. Also,
they had a blast riding around on the balance bike, which was just about
the best outdoor toy they had.

Re: [RBW] Re: MTBubbe Update

2018-05-05 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, I've found in the past that blue Loctite on the cradle stops the
slipping; I used it successfully twice, once on the cradle of a Ritchey
seatpost with considerable setback, and once on the slightly undersized
shaft of a Syncros titanium post that slipped down the seat tube at the
rate of about 1/2" per mile on one of my Rivs.

I'll be interested to hear from other owners of Rivendell "cruisers" how
they do on more technical trails, appropriately built. I don't mean the
really steep, rocky/rooty stuff for which a real mountain bike is needed,
but nice winding and hilly paths like those in Paul's photos. It seems that
some of these bikes would be ideal for such riding, minus the very wide,
sweepback bars.

Paul: Interesting writeup. I'll be interested to hear how the modifications
to the bike affect performance on technical trails, and to see photos of

Good mtb trails, with some technicality, within a mile from home -- lucky
you. I've not visited Atlanta for 30 years, but my father's family comes

go back one day.

I have nice trails (well, if you and your bike can handle fine sand) near
my house, too, but no hills, alas.

Re: [RBW] OT but mentioned on the Blahg: Hiking

2018-05-05 Thread ascpgh
Joe, You can start doing one exercise to make your "nature walks" more
enjoyable by the end when you are tired which is exercising your vastus
medialis (that lump just above the kneecap on the along inside of your
thigh.

I had a rough recovery from a leg surgery and its atrophy of disuse did not
respond
to cycling, which did get me up on my feet, just not with the stability to
feel confident on paths and trails. Once I was tipped to the muscle's
function in providing the final stabilization of the knee joint in
extension and any degree of flexion during effort. Underused in cycling
since the movement is so isolated from much necessity of lateral stability,
you'll find benefit from 5-10 minutes of effort to improve the condition of
yours over a couple weeks' of commitment.

What I did was lie flat on the ground, tighten one leg's muscles to lock it
in a straight stiff posture, toe pulled toward your chin. Lift your rigid
leg five inches and hold for a few seconds. Lower it, relax, repeat. Do the
same for both legs building both the duration and reps. Add shoes for more
resistance, heavier shoes for incrementally more. Ankle weights if you're
going for the Mr. Olympia look.

Your knees will feel better after your walks by having maintained their
alignment better during the trip instead of tiring and allowing the play
and the subsequent pain associated with it. Those muscles appreciate the
exercise after surprisingly little regular exercise.

Interestingly, the gear junkie who just pops in to REI and buys a pair of
Asolo 520 backpacking boots as their preparation for such walks will find
themselves aching and in persistent discomfort afterward because the weight
of those clodhoppers accentuates the poor condition of their vastus
medialis, combining to produce some increased displacement and inaccuracy
of their knees' movements. Any footwear more constructed than what you walk
in on a daily basis will require some conditioning in preparation both by
exercise and incremental distance and terrain acclimation to prevent being
the source of discomfort from your activity. Yeah, running shoes are easier.

[RBW] Re: MTBubbe Update

2018-05-05 Thread George Rosselle
With practice you will learn to weight the back wheel for traction. In my
experience I would rather have more traction in the front than the rear,
because when I wash out the front it in a corner it increases the chance of
a crash rather than if the back wheel slides a bit. Which is easier to
correct for me.

Regarding going tubeless with the Atlas rim, maybe try a few more layers of
tape in the well of the rim. That helped me when I was struggling with
getting a tire to seat on another rim, which was not an Atlas but the
principle is the same.
