Because on a modern trail bike, the top tube slope can vary extremely between

Since when has Rivendell geometry been constrained by available lugs? They’re
all Grant/house designed, and the addition of the ball-in-socket seat lug just
makes it even easier. The Cheviot head-TT lug makes a pretty MTB-style angle.

That said, we don’t know the extent of the luggage at this point.

2018-07-22 Thread Joe Bernard
To be clear (I wasn't), I was trying to answer Patrick the Deacon's questions
from the perspective of how that stuff got to be on mountain bikes as the niche
developed, not specifically why Riv is doing it now.

I've had plenty of threaded headsets come loose over the years, but never a Riv
headset over 15 years of owning/riding them, and I used to ride some gnarly
singletrack at China Camp, Marin County on my Romulus.

[RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-07-22 Thread Ginz
In my opinion, a threadless fork allows for a very stiff, inexpensive and and
rather lightweight 4 bolt stem. This opens up the handlebar possibilities as
now there is no requirement for a bullmoose design. Any old aluminum mtb bar
will do and one need not worry about getting the riser bars bend past a quill
stem’s clamp. Does Nitto even offer a mtb worth quill stem at this point?

I do not think the threadless design is about suspension correction in this
case. Also, a I do not see a threadless fork being easier to adjust on the
trail. Bearings, yes. Bar height, bar alignment, no.

73mm B.B. shell certainly indicates plus size tires. However I think the rest
of the bike’s design will be subtle variations of the Hunq and Bomba.

The one thing I am not clear about is how a fully lugged frame will have enough
top tube slope for big stand over clearance. Without that, all these
discussions about a modern MTB with plus+, boost, boing, squish, dropper,
hydro, and klamper might best be had about a different bike, shouldn’t they?

Re: [RBW] MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-07-22 Thread Grant Petersen
Theoretically easier to adjust with the tools you're likely to have with
you on a trail, but a few weeks ago I took a poll at work, and it revealed
that in more than 100 years of cumulative riding on dirt and roads, nobody
has ever had a threaded headset come loose. It can happen, but probably
won't. We "went threadless" only because we wanted riders to be able to
swap parts from existing bikes (stems, bars--if 31.8 to match the stem).
Rather than having to buy the bars and stems from us. WHich--we'll have a
good assortment, but still.
The 73 shell, yes, so you can have a fatty tire not riding too close to the
chain. It's not a big problem with 68, but now and then when you're going
down a bouncy trail, the chain will flop into the tire and the tire will
drag it down toward the chainstay and won't let go until you stop. It
sounds worse than it is. You're going down the trail, and all of a sudden
it sounds like you've picked up the mother of all leaves, but the bike
still goes.
Also, if you want to use a single-ring crank and external bb, those are
optimized for 73mm shells.
The debate was: 73mm shells and threadless, or Carbon Fiber and shocks, and
the right ones won!

Any condition considered, and in fact, the beat-er the better-er; I'm not

I can get a new one straight from the source for about $71.00 to ZIP code

[RBW] FS: Nitto SOBA H'Bar 44cm - $60 shipped.

2018-07-22 Thread Elton Pope-Lance
The lightweight non-sleeved version of the Nitto Noodle. Used but solid. Has
some residue from tape adhesive and some scratches from installation/removal of
a tight brake mounting ring. Nothing that won’t clean up well or show when
taped.

Please email of list if interested. Thanks!

[RBW] New to me Roadeo

2018-07-22 Thread JohnS
Well they say, "Good things come to those who wait", which is the case with
the Roadeo that I purchased last weekend from list member Kelly. It was
about this time last year that I got it in my head that I wanted a Roadeo
and I've been on the look out for a good used example in my size since then
(61cm). They don't come up often and when they do, you have to jump, which
I did, thankfully with the support of my wife. Kelly had it professionally
boxed by his LBS and shipped by Bike Flights/FedEx, arriving on Friday.
Since then I've washed, waxed and assembled it. I only got out it for about
a mile ride today due to the rain, looking forward taking it on my spirited
club ride on Wednesday evening, a pace line with an average speed around
17.5 mph. I'm also looking forward to riding it on the Lancaster Covered
Bridge metric century on 8/19 and the Civil War Century on 9/8. The color
is something of a metal flake root beer, which I love. It came with Rene
Hearse crank, White Inds hubs laced to Velosity rims, 105 brifters, Ultegra
rear and a Campy front derailleur. Nitto stem and seat post and Tektro
brakes. I installed my own B17 and VP vise pedals. Current build is 23
pounds which I'm very happy with. I'm sure it could be lighter, but I'm not
going there. The only big change will be to Mustache bars and vintage
Suntour bar end shift levers which I'll install next weekend. Thanks again
to Kelly for such an awesome bike! I feel very fortunate.

73mm bb seems to suggest that plus, or at least signifficantly wider, tires are
still in play. That's good news.

If it's going threadless, I wonder if there will be a batch of stems with
decent rise accompanying the release. I still can't stand the stack-of-poker
chips thing, even on bikes that aren't otherwise as pretty as rivs.

Regarding the committing to one sight unseen question, I think some sizing
information would be necessary as a minimum. He's not talking about a scenario
like the appaloosa/mystery/long bike where they were built with a specific
buyer in mind, right?

Hi Doug. No, but not for any reasons related to my experience with the
bicycle. It had to do with loss of job and medical bills. Happy to say it
resides with another RBW lister. I would not hesitate to get another, and
likely will at some point down the road. And by the way, it's capable of
much more than commuting, of course. Here's mine on the way to the top of
Mt. Beacon:

Super fun, super useful bicycle. And I think very attractive. It has a real
heirloom feel to it, despite being low on the Riv totem pole. Just a
different level of frame quality than, say, a Public or Breezer bike.

[RBW] Re: Bicycle Commuting

2018-07-22 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Not that this chorus needs another voice, but I currently commute about
forty miles each way on one of three Rivendells - a Homer, a Bleriot, and a
Hunqapillar - and all are outstanding commuters. The latter may be a bit
of overkill, but all are fun, super comfortable, able to handle whatever
weather comes your way, and are really lovely, to boot. My commute is
entirely on pavement, but I have no doubt that any of the three could
easily handle any amount of gravel or dirt you'd care to throw at 'em en
route. Plus, they have no problem carrying an additional bag or two for
your change of clothes and other commuter necessities.
Rivs have always been built for this kind of role; consider skimming Ebay
and Craiglist for one of the older models - the Bleriot is one of my
favorites - which can sometimes be had for a very reasonable price.
Good luck.

2018-07-22 Thread Ian A
Patrick,

Have you considered looking on your local Craigslist? I just had a quick look
on Albuquerque Craigslist and noted a one owner Novara Randonnee $360 (no size,
but currently belongs to a six footer), a large '89 one owner Specialized Rock
Hopper Comp $70 (needs new wheels and probably lots of work) and a 57cm Schwinn
World Tour $100.

I appreciate that most used bikes require a degree of mechanical work so maybe
not the best approach. The Novara Randonnee could be a super candidate for
someone looking for something to commute on. But, at ~$300 and if it's already
in good shape, the Novara could be greatly preferable to a new $500 bike.
