Re: [RBW] Re: Outside article on CF

2018-07-26 Thread jack loudon
I understand that due diligence can be different than with steel, because,
as was said before, CF is relatively new, and the consequences of
frame/fork failure are greater. The one full CF bike I bought was from REI
(I no longer own the bike). I've been an REI member for 40+ years & have
come to trust their product selection, and they are a nationwide retailer
who hopefully doesn't want their members to get injured and sue them. They
also have a great return policy if the bike has problems. The most recent
CF fork I bought was from my LBS, where the owner intensely dislikes carbon
forks so I went with his recommendation of the the 'least unsafe' fork.
As I said before, I would probably buy CF from Salsa, mostly because they
are well-established, aren't weight-obsessed and focus on off-road bikes.
I would be less inclined to buy CF from Trek or Specialized because they
are more focused on ultra light weight and bleeding edge technology. I
would be very reluctant to buy from a new startup company such as 3T or
Open UP, even if praised in BQ. I know this isn't great advice and maybe
I'm too gullible or trusting; but it's what I did or would do, in addition
to the usual online research.

I did not. I don't think they're in or unpacked yet. The showroom seemed

Legolas that had been repainted with what looked like the same color as
mine, but with a cream headtube. Very nice.

Anyone remember Cannondale's attempt at motorcycles? Not a resounding

I've been known to load up my basket with up to 50 lbs of plaster on

Thanks!

*The Jannd front rack (black) is a great front rack but doesn't fit the

The nature of the due diligence would be the research most of us would

Definitely the Alex Singer shop, at 53 Rue Victor Hugo in Levallois (a separate

built frames for some 50-60 years. Their supply of vintage NOS equipment is

Re: [RBW] Re: Kids Stuff - What child seat fits what bike?

2018-07-26 Thread Dan McNamara
I used a Bobike Mini on my 52 Bombadil. That bike (early version) had a 59
TT and I used Bosco bars with it. My PBH is 84.5 so there was plenty of
height clearance. The clearance to the nose of the saddle was good - I
never had a problem with feeling crowded. The Bobike is more upright than
the iBert which is a good thing for clearance.

Anyway, the front seat was great until she was 3 1/2 and then I stitched
her to the back of the Cheviot with a Yepp Maxi seat. She never liked the
Burley trailer.

A friend used the Bobike after we outgrew it and really liked it as well.
He used it on a threadless mountain bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-07-26 Thread Grant Petersen
The YouTube style of riding has upped the requirements for bike and fork
testing, but the tests still aren't super reflective of how and why things
break in real life. ALL carbon frames and forks pass the tests, and yet
they continue to fail, because of the brittle nature of it and the
unpredictability of the forces. Airplane makers,. who test a LOT and have
gone ahead with carbon in certain applications, are now backing away. I am
not an airplane maker, but I also don't make up things.
Our testers in Taiwan--who also test bikes for tons of others--have a
fairly low opinion of the tests' ability to predict real actual performance
results. The FIRST generation Appaloosa forks came within 5 percent of
passing the toughest mountain bike test. The testers said, "It will never
break in use, but carbon forks that DO pass will." We thickened the crown
and blades, anyway, so now--for better or worse--they pass. In real life
they're not any safer, but both are safer than carbon, because of how they
fail.
On any steel fork, if you ride with ear buds and never pay any attention,
you'll miss months of warnings, but eventually the noise or funny movement
will jerk you alert in time to save yourself.
In the carbon vs aluminum test--I'd still rather ride aluminum. It's a more
predictable and less brittle than carbon. You could throw in a cheap steel
fork from granpapa's Huffy, and it wouldn't pass the test, but it would
still be a safer fork, because of how steel fails. Cheap bike steel fails
in impact and compression even better than good bike steel! But good bike
steel is easily good enough, and wins on other tests.
Many of you have seen our own fork tests. If you haven't, read the
disclaimer on page one, so you don't misunderstand the test.

Re: [RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-07-26 Thread Philip Williamson
I see - some mixtes may not have enough seat post extension to drop. Makes
sense.
Hite rites! Every time I've seen a used hite rite for sale, it's been $15.
For the last 30 years! It's been about 30 years since I rode with one, too.

After riding with a remote dropper, after years of manually lowering my
saddle for technical descents, and figuring that a saddle-mounted drop
lever would be fine for my riding... I love the remote. The trail changes
quickly, and I find it's useful to drop the saddle an inch for technical
climbing, too, just to allow more 'english' on moving the bike around
rocks. On unfamiliar trails, suddenly encountering a root ladder, the thumb
lever is really nice. I don't need gears to mountain bike, or plus sized
tires (they're nice), but that post is a game changer. It's not even
bling-y, it's just whatever came on the base model Big Honzo. Which is why
I'm adding one to a road bike that I want to be able to ride anywhere.

[RBW] Re: Kids Stuff - What child seat fits what bike?

2018-07-26 Thread EasyRider
Paul, I think you're wise to borrow one first. These front seats tend to
work best with large frames/top tubes. If you are about my size (PBH ~79),
you may decide to wait for the Rosco Bebe or to get that trailer a little
sooner.

I can only speak to the iBert, but after installing one on my Trek 950,
which I think has a top tube around 57-58cm, there was hardly any room left
between the nose of the saddle and the backside of the iBert. (It wasn't a
"tight squeeze" it was a "there's no way I could ever fit in there" kind of
space, and I'm a trim 155 lbs.) I'd have needed to lower my saddle way down
so that I could safely straddle the bike and plop my dude in the seat and
buckle him in. And then I'd be riding around with knees splayed and legs
never fully extended. This the problem that the Rosco Bebe would address by
having a "legendarily long top tube" and swept back bars.

Re: [RBW] Outside article on CF

2018-07-26 Thread Ryan M.
Dang, that's a bad crack. Hey, we have the same year and color Trek Fuel
Ex.

I have a Niner Sir9 which hasn't shown a crack but the frames have been
known to develop issues in the seat stays near the seat tube. I keep an eye
on it. Hopefully if it ever does crack, bend, or otherwise show signs of
failure Niner will do me right.

Though to the frame’s credit, I did find the crack before the head tube

[RBW] Re: In Japan! Any recommendations?

2018-07-26 Thread Brad
This doesn't answer your question at all, but sort of relates to bikes in
Tokyo:

About 15 years ago, I was in Tokyo working on a photo shoot. One of the
Japanese photo assistants was a young guy who went to school in NYC and
rode his bike to the shoot every day. I asked him lots of questions about
riding in Tokyo. This was before smartphones and I was impressed that he
could navigate the city (I'd gotten really lost going running). NJS gear
was getting popular in the states, so I asked him if he ever went to Keirin
races. He looked confused. Finally, he answered that he didn't really think
of Keirin races as cycling, that he associated them more with old drunk men
and gambling.

One of my favorite spots in Tokyo is the Meguro Parasitological Museum, but
I have weird taste in tourist spots.

Like Joe and Patrick, I also think CF *can* be safe but the buyer/owner
needs to do a lot more due diligence than when buying steel. Because the
consequences of CF failure are so great, sloppy design and construction
simply can't be tolerated. I would tend to trust company like Salsa (for
instance) because their CF frames seem to emphasize strength over extreme
light weight. Their Cutthroat has had plenty of testing on the Tour Divide
and other races, and if Salsa has had CF frame or fork failures, I haven't
heard of them. OTOH, Salsa had a steel fork recall awhile back. IMO it's
not the material but the integrity and expertise of the designer/builder.

Re: [RBW] Re: Outside article on CF

2018-07-26 Thread Ryan Merrill
I used to have a carbon Trek Emonda but stopped riding on the road so I sold it
to a friend who is still riding it and loves it. I currently have a Kona carbon
cyclocross bike and a Santa Cruz Hightower carbon MTB. They do their jobs well,
are fun to ride, and have held up. I personally would steer clear of cheap
Chinese carbon stuff but in my experience the bikes made today work well. I’ve
crashed that cyclocross bike at least fifty times while training or racing and
it really doesn’t even have a scratch. I’d also steer clear of carbon wheels if
you are using rim brakes. They just don’t stop as well.

I know a lot of local riders who ride carbon framed bikes and can’t think of
one of them with a failure because it was carbon.

But, I would prefer steel for everything, not from a safety perspective but
more from ride quality and aesthetics. I do think steel is more durable too.

I went to Blue Lug Hatagaya a few months ago. Tons of Rivendells, Nitto

LUG Hatagaya, a cafe/restaurant/bar around the corner, nice vibes. Hatagaya
is pretty residential so for a tourist not much else to do out there, but
not a far train/bus ride from Shinjuku.

Not bike related: Possibly my favorite cafe on earth would be Lion

because they have an ongoing program of classical music on vinyl played

2018-07-26 Thread Adam Leibow
thanks for the words everybody!

Joe, the way Compass names their tires, one name=one size, so antelope
hill=700cx55, switchback hill=650bx48, rat trap pass=26"x2.3, etc etc.
there are plenty of 650b options.

Justin, go for it. only perceivable difference is long wheelbase versus
shorter wheelbase, no?

Lester, I have the Billie bars on my Sam Hillborne and I've thought about
getting Wavie bars for it (when they come out), and putting the Billie bars
on this. We'll see what happens.

Re: [RBW] Re: Outside article on CF

2018-07-26 Thread Joe Bernard
Patrick, I think the answer is maybe. If you buy a high-end CF bike from
someone like Calfee who knows what they're doing, I think it would be safe IF
you don't bang it on something and IF it's inspected regularly. But it's still
not going to be a race car that, if it fails, spins around and clouts a tire
wall while you're belted in with a full-face helmet. For me I would definitely
ride a Calfee frame, but the steering system has to be metal. I need those bars
in my hands, and that front wheel in its proper location and rolling. I don't
trust carbon to do that.

Re: [RBW] Outside article on CF

2018-07-26 Thread Jim Bronson
What about a carbon fiber frame with a steel fork? You'd shore up the part
that arguably has the highest consequence were it to fail, but you could
still have all the manufacturing flexibility one gets with carbon fiber,
i.e., making frames in strange shapes and so forth.

Not to say I'd buy one, I'm happy with my fully steel bikes, but it seems
like it would improve on the safety of a bike that was otherwise mostly
carbon fiber.

Very nice Adam. You may want to consider the Billie bars. More swept back

This is interesting. The article goes on to say, in effect, that well
designed cf parts are perfectly safe -- ie, that if you pay enough for your
cf bit, you'll be fine. Is this a pretty good rule of thumb? I personally
have at least toyed with the idea of getting CF rims (after watching the
Danny MaCaskill video!) or even a frame.

You won't get "cush" with the Cambium tape. It's hard as a rock and is so
stiff it doesn't wrap well (unless they've improved it since a couple of
years ago). It's also quite abrasive to the hand. All in all, it was one of
the biggest wastes of money I've ever made on cycling gear (and I've made
some big ones). I was really disappointed, since I love my Cambium saddles
and was hoping to match.

Tokyo-
Visit Meiji Shrine
Toyusu Fish market
Imperial Palace
Studio Ghibli Museum (need to get tickets in advance I hear)
Anata No Warehouse (arcade)
Cofffee Elementary
HArmonica Alley

Kyoto-
Inari Shrine
Grand Bois cycles

Might try to take a day trip to Kamakaru. Luckily the airbnb we're staying

[RBW] Anyone tried Brooks rubber Cambium bartape?

2018-07-26 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Due to carpal tunnel, and several surgeries, I use Grab On foam ‘slide on’ drop
bar grips, covered with Lizard Skins thickest tape. My tape is about three
years old and still looks new. The first time I installed it, I ruined it by
pulling too tight when wrapping. If you go to my Instagram page,
#DirtDanceDesigns, I just posted a picture with marks on my hand that my doctor
drew on, where to NOT put pressure on your hands to prevent nerve damage. If
you look at photos of my Atlantis, you can get an idea on how fat my bars are.

[RBW] Re: In Japan! Any recommendations?

2018-07-26 Thread Takashi
Hi Manny,

Last time I visited Kyoto I saw many cafe shops that seemed like they
opened recently, so you will have many options.
I had limited time in Kyoto so I can't say about where you should see, but
any temples and shrines, even non-famous ones, should be worth a visit.

If you have extra time in Tokyo, you might enjoy taking Yamanote Line
train, get off at random station, and taking a walk around the station.
It's interesting to see sceneries and atmospheres vary from one station to
another, though they are located pretty close to each other (less than a
mile).

If you're coming in summer, be prepared for humidity.
Temperature is generally lower than in California, but humidity easily hits
80%.
When are you coming?
Tokyo and Kyoto are both far away from where I live (Nagano), but it will
be great if my work schedule allows to meet you.

Re: [RBW] Re: Brooks saddle turning into a banana

2018-07-26 Thread Ron Mc
I recommend using the stretch bolt and lacing as below -

this will get you a few more thousand miles before you have to replace it.
You can also use a toe strap behind the seat post to take some of the flare
from the sides between rides.

This saddle is pushing 20,000 mi - with the lacing it doesn't need the toe
strap - just took the photo to demonstrate to someone else how to do it.

If you just use the stretch bolt without lacing, you'll get a center ridge
like this online photo.
The point of lacing is to eliminate the side flaring.

[RBW] Re: Anyone tried Brooks rubber Cambium bartape?

I like the Planet Bike gel tape. Cushy and no gooey residue when removed.
About $15.

[RBW] Motolite or other v-brake clearance

2018-07-26 Thread MartyG
Considering a brake change. Can someone tell me what the distance is from the
center of the canti post to the crossover between arms? I could not find info
about the max tire size. I want to see if the 700c G1s will fit using Motolites
or any other v-brake. Not worried about fenders at the moment, but would be
nice if the arms are tall enough. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Outside article on CF

2018-07-26 Thread Nick Payne
Well, CF frames and components are certainly not as forgiving of ham-fisted
mechanics. With steel frames and aluminium components, I never bothered
with a torque wrench. Not so with CF Components.
