[RBW] Bullmoose Bars - Your Experiences?

2018-08-01 Thread Zach Duval
I've got a pair on my Crust Romanceur that's set up as a trail and dirt tourer.
I use them mostly on singletrack but have had them out on an overnighter
covering about 120 miles in two days.

I really like them, and they hold up surprisingly well on long rides for me. I
have bars about an inch above the saddle and Brooks Ergon grips.

Pashley is also like if Brompton made a light traditional road bike and didn't
tell anybody. The company is known for big black 'Raleigh 3-speed-style' bikes
with drum brakes that weigh as much as my ebike, so this one slips right under
the radar.

I think I'm going to put the double road drivetrain back on and try to sell it
with that more traditional set up. I think my 3-speed arrangement just confuses

[RBW] Re: convert A. Homer Hilsen 700c to 650b

2018-08-01 Thread Leslie
I converted my 60 Ram to 650b so I could fender over 42's, using Tektro
559's to do it; I understand why you're wanting to do what you're
wanting. But Hilsens are built for that bigger clearance w/ those
calipers, those calipers won't pull the conversion off on that frame.

I'm a 12 (and will probably slide into 13's before long as my feet widen),
I get the TCO issue: but I finally kept listening to G on this: it's not
really a big issue. Yeah, in slow speed turns, I've run my toe down the
tire, but, it's never caused me to go over, and as soon as you get just a
little bit of speed, you're not turning your tire far enough for your toe
to catch it anymore.

Here's my suggestion: switch to a centerpull to maximize the room, put the
fenders all the way up, and see if you can get something like MSO's on
there. I run MSOs on my canti-Rom, I don't think I need anything bigger
of a roadish persuasion. If MSOs won't fit, (they're 700c-40) [they might
even fit w/ your current calipers, but, maybe the centerpulls would help w/
fenders], find some cushy 38's, see how they do.If you're still not
happy... then keep your eye out for an appropriately-sized Saluki.

Good luck,

-L

[RBW] Re: convert A. Homer Hilsen 700c to 650b

2018-08-01 Thread Jeremy Till
Homers are already specc'ed with the longest caliper brakes used on roadish
bikes (55-76mm reach), the brakes that most people use for 650b conversions
on 700c bikes with shorter reach brakes. Bikes that need more clearance
than a 55-76mm brake can offer generally use cantilevers or disc brakes.
There are a couple of BMX brake calipers out there that have even longer
reach but frankly I wouldn't recommend it. They are heavy, super flexy and
the performance is poor:

[RBW] What Size Nord Lock washer for Silver Bar Ends?

2018-08-01 Thread Joe Bernard
Nord-Lock washers? I'm not aware of any washers that go between the screw and
the plastic. If your plastic thingys are wore out you can buy new ones from
Riv, they're a little stouter than pre-2010 thingys.

[RBW] convert A. Homer Hilsen 700c to 650b

2018-08-01 Thread Mark Schneider
I'd like to put 650b wheels on my 61 A. H.H. Wondering if anyone has tried
this and what brakes would work. Pretty sure the Tecktro 559 don't have the
reach. Why would I do this? Mainly room between fender and tire with 42MM
wide tires and toe overlap, my size 12 feet always het my front wheel.
Thanks

[RBW] New to me Homer, first build

2018-08-01 Thread JonG
A few months ago I bought Rich from Rivendell's Homer, hoping to build it
up with some vintage parts as a prelude toward maybe doing L'Eroica this
year. After a billon false starts, issues, and frustrations, I finally
finished.

-Vintage campy Nuovo Record rear derailleur with Soma extra long cage
-Albastache bars and dirt drop stem
-Vintage campy downtube shifters, which are horrendous
-IRD cranks
-Velo Orange wheels
-Diacompe brakes
-Compass tires

Pics here:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/qAB8nqaHk6vr1VU59

It rides so well, I can't believe how comfortable and snappy it is with so
little adjustment. I'm definitely a Riv convert.

[RBW] What Size Nord Lock washer for Silver Bar Ends?

2018-08-01 Thread Steven Seelig
I know this is a more mundane topic than the discussion I just read on Paul
Racers vs.Tecktros on the Hillborne - I have the Tecktros but have Paul's
on 2 other bikes. I cannot seem to find info on the size Nord-Lock washers
to fit between the thumb screw and the plastic thingee on the Silver Bar
ends. My shifter tends to loosen after 50 miles or so and I'd like that
not to happen. First world problems, yes.

Anyone know and do I really need them? The Riv literature is coy and say
maybe you do and maybe you don't.

[RBW] Re: Brooks saddle turning into a banana

2018-08-01 Thread Ian A
Ron makes and fair point and the saddle certainly looks sorry for itself in
the photos, but for my 15 mile round trip commute and the odd 60 mile
weekend ride, it does well enough and is as comfortable as an old boot. For
longer rides I have other bikes with newer lower mileage Brooks. I probably
won't retire the old Brooks until the leather rips clear of the rivets.
It's not pretty, but works well - a bit like its owner.

[RBW] Re: Will a microshift R10 short cage derailer wrap a 2 x 32-11 setup?

2018-08-01 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Thanks, you guys.
I will have to think about what to do. Sounds like short or mid will work.
Short with limitations.

But I usually only dump to the small front ring when I need to get up steep
hills I can't get up on middle ring with the 40 x 32.
Usually don't go into small chainring otherwise. Full dump to my lowest
gear when I do. Then back to the big ring at the top.

But, might be disatrous if I forget and go cross-chaining off the small
chainring with a shortie RD. So have to think about that.
Maybe mid-cage would be best.

Max,

I tried converting a 1985 Trek 400 to 650b using the Tektro 559 brakes. I
filed down the slots on the front to get them to work (barely). In
retrospect I should have tried the DiaCompe 750 long reach center pulls
which have 78mm of reach. Those brakes get mixed reviews but they sure have
the required reach!

Best of luck with your conversion.

[RBW] Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.

2018-08-01 Thread tc
I have a 58 Sam with 559s. Stopping power is just fine. I’m 190lbs and do road
and greenway riding (no off-road) on this bike. Wet braking is fine.

I run 44 Snoq Pass tires under the 559s with no fenders, no prob.

Speaking of fenders, the Paul’s would certainly allow wider tires with fenders.
The SKS longboards fit under the 559s when running a 38 tire.

2018-08-01 Thread Jim Bronson
I'm 6'7" and 300+, although I don't ride a Sam, but rather an older 650b
converted Riv with the R559 brakes. I think they work fine. If I felt
like I needed to stop more quickly I'd get some Kool Stop pads.

If I still lived in Oregon I'd probably look into a bike with discs. I
rode my 80s 10 and 12 speed bikes around a lot growing up and when it
rained, which in Western Oregon is often, the brakes were worse than
useless.

[RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.

2018-08-01 Thread Brett Callahan
My sincere thanks to you all for your comments. I think I'll go ahead with
the purchase. In the short term, I'll put kool stop pads on the Tektros and
see how they feel. The consensus seems to be that the Paul's are a slight
step up in power, but are more work to set up (fine with me) and vastly
more expensive.

I appreciate all of your input.

2018-08-01 Thread RichS

Brett:

My four year old Sam has Tektro 559 brakes and they work fine with fenders
and 38mm tires. But I can confirm what Drew says: the Paul Racers are a
step up. They have a nicer feel (smooth and solid is the best description I
can provide). The additional clearance they provide over the Tektros is a
bonus. If you have the cash and want to begin the addiction to Paul
Components then go for it. You won't be disappointed.

Best,
Richard

Thank you to all for your responses - this makes total sense to me now. I

Re: [RBW] Will a microshift R10 short cage derailer wrap a 2 x 32-11 setup?

2018-08-01 Thread Jim Bronson
I'm running 44/28 up front with 11-32 in the back and a Microshift R10 rear
derailer. I know it's only rated for 28T, but it works great with the
11-32.

I spend close to 99% of my time in the 44. I did use the 28 yesterday a
few times for climbing out of some Hill Country river valleys in 95F heat
with dead tired legs.

I don't know if small/small would work and honestly I don't care to try it
except maybe in the stand.

ps - I'm running the mid-cage R10 with 42/25T and 13-29t, and have total
coverage - it will go to small/small, and I usually store it in 25T/14t to
keep the RD spring relaxed.
Also use small/smallish riding through standing water to keep the chain
elevated.

2018-08-01 Thread Kainalu V.
Adjustability proves nothing is perfect. That Bullmoose aren't proves something
else? Maybe akin to blind faith in an infallible supreme being? Or that close
enough is as good as it gets? Or that everything else is so I don't have to be?
Whatever it is, it's worked for me. I've had them on multiple quickbeams and
have loved them, much of that love due to their lack of adjustability and the
resulting squash of the dreaded "hand wringing" over it's not perfect enough.
As Garth might say, put your hands on it and pedal!, it'll be fine. And as Joe
has noted, ergon grips are goodness.

I have a Sam with the Tektro brakes and they are not great brakes but
adequate and only after a pad change. They look good, nice sculpted lines
and the finish of the brake is well done. Super easy to set up which is a
bonus. The price is more than affordable so they have that going for them.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't buy them, but on the other hand you
don't see me running out and buying the Paul's as a replacement. So I like
them well enough to keep them on my bike but I have never been impressed.

[RBW] MIT Roadeo coming?

2018-08-01 Thread Fullylugged
Lim:

Essentially, I built my own "Road-ini". The Waterford RS12 that Jim here on
the list sent my way is styled like a classic Riv. Level TT, extended HT, nice
fork curve with generous rake resulting in a low trail and 42 cm chain stays.
Converting it to 650B only enhances the comfort and the ride while fitting 38
mm tires without fenders and 33 +/- with. The colors are almost dead on for the
original Road or Romulus blue with a cream head tube! By building it up with
Riv spec parts (Sugino XD, Nitto Noodle, etc) it corners and tracks like a
Roadeo, having crisper geometry than the Hilsen or Ram and lighter tubing as
well. All that to say you might also look for a frame like that and build it
up Roadeo style. Unless of course, you want to call RBW and discuss a custom.
That could be great as well! Legolas was introduced as a CX bike before the
gravel craze took hold. Roadeo was a nod to the fast club ride crowd and
Roadini a more affordable bike doing almost the same thing. I posted a link to
pictures in another thread.

your needed chain wrap is 40-24+32-11=34

chain wrap of that RD is 37

the 3-tooth difference would let you shift no smaller than 32T/14t in the
rear, but you can question whether you would ever want to shift to
small/smallest.

I run a half-step+granny triple on a Cyclone GT that won't go to the two

So I think it would work fine for you, as long as you keep the difference

Re: [RBW] Styrofoam in a Ram bottom bracket shell?

2018-08-01 Thread ascpgh
Joe and Ed beat me to it: +1 on original packing material that entered the
frame versus escaped when broken up.

They didn't use the box bike plastic cap solution since the seat cluster
lug has a nice lug with an upward point that must be protected from
deflection (or else the seat post wouldn't go in). The styrofoam was
partially punched by the seat post lug and stopped by the top tube for a
good shipping pad solution.

Re: [RBW] Styrofoam in a Ram bottom bracket shell?

2018-08-01 Thread Ed Fausto
I think Joe is right.
When the ship the bike, they put a styrofoam on top of the seat tube that
looks like a letter T to protect the lug.
Maybe the lower portion that is placed inside the seat tube broke off and
went down the bottom bracket.

[RBW] Re: FS: New Phil cassette hub

2018-08-01 Thread Nick Payne
Forget I asked - I've just noticed that one of the photos shows the washer
that goes behind the cassette when installing a 9/10 road cassette or a
9/10/11 MTB cassette, which would indicate that it's the longer road
freehub body.

2018-08-01 Thread Nick Payne
Is that freehub for 9/10/11 road or MTB? The Road freehubs are ~1.85mm
longer, and you can't fit an 11s road cassette (except for the new 11-34)
onto an MTB freehub.

[RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.

2018-08-01 Thread John Bokman
I had the stock Tektros on my Sam. Found them lacking. I'd been using
Cantis for years, and this was my first forray into sidepulls in years. I
think the long arms resulted in too much flex. They were easy to adjust,
however. Easily the easiest brakes I've used to set up and maintain. But in
wet Oregon, not so great for me.
I use Paul Racer on a different bike, and they are heads and shoulders
better for stopping. I don't care for their looks, but they work great.
Worth the money to me.
