Re: [RBW] Re: Orange Roadini

2018-08-23 Thread Joe Bernard
Sean, first report on Jack Brown's is they're just like Roly Polys: a little
grainy (if that's a description of how a tire rides), but it feels fast. I
wouldn't call them supple like the big 650B tires I'm used to these days, but
that's not what a Roadini is about IMO.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet purchase

2018-08-23 Thread sameness
I'll take a stab at it.

Assuming the stem length, handlebar shape and width, and the gearing worked
for me, and all I needed were incidentals like new cables, brake pads, and
a chain, I'd be happy to part with about $1K-ish. Ebay seems to agree with
me.

I always assume I'll be changing the tires anyway. Saddle and pedals
included would be a big plus. Another big plus for me would be the Ritchey
cranks. Not so sure if I could live with those blue rims and nipples, but
eye of the beholder and all that.

As far as cosmetic damage is concerned, so long there are no spooky dings
or rust, I actively seek the shelter mutts. Garage queens seem to command
the king's ransom.

Just my two cents, playing with your wallet!

2018-08-23 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Great ride report, Tim! What a fantastic experince, and I love your examination
of conscience at the end. That’s one of the amazing gifts I find with biking in
general, and multi-day rides more deeply — they are great at pealing back my
stupid so I can see it more clearly! Grin.

One thing I’ve learned to do, which isn’t easy on a planned distance tour but
works for me, is to ride 6 hours a day. I can do 8-10 hours if I have to, but 6
is my sweet spot. That way, when x takes longer, or there is no water until two
hours farther, or whatever other challenge happens, it’s already built in. On
the weird days when everything goes right, more time for pipe and whisky at
camp. Grin.

The beer stops sound great. And what a great highlight to the trip, spending
time with John. Lovely. Thank you for sharing your great photos and adventure!

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal

2018-08-23 Thread SeanMac
Tim,

I loved reading your story about your Erie Canal trip. I do wish that the
story had ended on a happier note. On the whole, however, it sounded like
the ride had more highlights than low-lights. Still, based on my own
experiences, that tough last night would be a lingering bummer. You will
have to make the trip next year!

I live about 20 miles south-east of Buffalo. A few years ago my son and I,
along with a number of boys in his Boy Scout troops, rode from Lockport to
Albany. The first few days were awesome (yes - Holley is a great place to
camp). However, after that it rained like crazy. There were large
sections of the trail that were closed due to flooding of the Mohawk
River. This led to some difficult moments (and lots of mosquitoes), but
also made the trip an even bigger adventure.

If I recall correctly, we took seven days to do the trip (the majority of
the boys were approximately 15 years old and were not well-trained
cyclists). We averaged approximately 30-35 miles the first few days.
However, on the last day we did approximately 70 miles. The kids were
amazed by how far they rode that day!

I hope to do the trip again some day. In the past I rode an early 90s Trek
520. Next time, I plan to take my Cheviot.

Thanks, again, for sharing your story.

Ah, good point Cody! I forgot that unlike my Hilsen the current Sam has a
6° sloping top tube. The 62cm 6° New-Sam has the same theoretical 62.5cm
top tube as my 65cm 1.5° Waterford-Hilsen. Should get the bars up just
about as high and fit just about the same. I got it wrong, I bet you'd fit
just fine on the 62cm New-Sam. (And I bet I would too!)

You're right about the longer top tube on the 64cm Waterford-Sam compared
to the 62cm New-Sam. All other things being equal (and all bodies being
proportional) the longer TT'd 64cm Waterford-Sam might be predisposed to
work a bit better with upright bars, and the shorter TT'd 62cm New-Sam
might be preferable for drop bars. But I suspect both would work out with
either.

All that said, bear in mind what Grant said on the old Rambouillet flyer:

"The least useful [fit information], yet most likely to be harped on, is
top tube length. You cannot compare bikes by top tube length unless seat
tube angles and head tube height and steerer length are exactly the same."

Of course he's right. The Hilsen I'm building only needed a 1cm shorter
stem to put the bars in the same place as my custom Fitz, which has a 2cm
shorter top tube!

Best,
Reed

[RBW] Re: Weight weenie report. Dia Compe 980 brakes

2018-08-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
I took one bare arm and my smallest file with me on my commute today for
some meditative filing. I knocked out the forge parting lines pretty
quickly. Now is time for the biggest aesthetic decision:

Do I remove the "Dia Compe" that is forged in? It's not deep, so it
wouldn't be terribly difficult, and the thinning would be very
JPWeigle-esque. I'm not one of those anti-branding zealots, though. I'm

Mo pics. New Jack Browns mounted cuz the Compasses I had were too out of
round..too many days sitting flat on the Pashley, I think. No front derailer at
the moment and it may stay that way, I'm leaning towards running as a 1x8. A
black saddle may go back on, that natural-finish B17 is pretty much honey color
now, it's a little orangey on an orange bike to my eye. It's a great bike,
check it out!

[RBW] Seeking recommendations for builder to make yet further modifications to my 2003 Rivendell

2018-08-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Cross posting on purpose.

I've had this frame modified twice, and while the 2 local builders did what
I asked them, I want to ask more, and I want a builder with a reputation
for painstaking care, and for anticipating problems. That is to say, I want
a builder who will be more proactive than our local ones.

In particular, I want better fender fit; thus, I'd want to move the rear
brake bridge a 3d time for more fender clearance; have the threaded fender
bosses under bridge and fork crown repaired; have canti/V-brake bosses
installed; and perhaps have another fork made with more fender clearance.

I may have a few other minor details done too, which we're at it.

I'll need sound advice on the result to the metal of so many modifications,
and I'd like to deal with someone who can look, listen, and advise with a
pretty good chance of anticipating all the things that I didn't anticipate
at times 1 and 2

As for painting, another powdercoat is fine; I care much less about paint
than about ride and how a bike fits together.

I expect to have frame shipped both ways.

Please reply offlist.

Thanks.

I'll second Kai's recommendation of the 64cm if you have a PBH of 95cm. My

[RBW] Re: What tires fit good on 700c Sun CR18 rims?

2018-08-23 Thread Lum Gim Fong
I got that snap in "Zed's"(?) green nylon type tape for slipperiness.
Used Wire bead Pasela went on in a snap.
Folding pasela (new) took a little work but not as bad as getting the 35
Paselas off. Ran a little spit on the bead to help it get over the rim edge.

I ordered some GB Cypress tires and I will see how it goes.

PS- oddly (only because of online recommendations and reports I have read),
the guy at the LBS said not to use Stan's rim tape on a regular rim because
too thin and will get damaged easier. So I got that green transluscent ZED
snap over tape he recommended.

[RBW] Ride Report: Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal

2018-08-23 Thread Tim Bantham
Hello All, I posted a ride report on my personal blog highlighting a trip I
took on my Appaloosa from Buffalo, NY to Albany, NY via the Erie Canal
path. For those who are inclined to read it I have posted the link below:

https://wordpress.com/post/muddychainstays.wordpress.com/429

For those of you who lack the time or desire I'll share a few highlights:

My Joe Appaloosa made for a nearly perfect touring bike.
The highlight of my trip was meeting fellow list member John Phillips. I
was overwhelmed by his gracious hospitality.
This is a great trip to take that I would recommend to anyone interested in
doing a week long tour. In the blog post I share lots of photos and
thoughts on what I would have done differently. Enjoy!

Seconding this. I've used CR18's (and previously Sun M13's as well) for
years. Most tires have been no problem, although some were a little tight
with cloth rim tape. Switch to something thinner like tubeless tape and you
shouldn't have a problem.

All the GB Cypress tires I've had (roughly 4 pairs) have felt more supple

I haven't tried the combo with the CR-18s but I would think they would be

I had terrible experiences with these rims until I got a set of Compass

[RBW] Re: FS: 61 cm Bleriot

2018-08-23 Thread patrick ryan
John G- I can check the weight when I return to my apartment next Friday.
I really can not even venture a guess.

Someone had asked about the bike's location. It is in Fremont, CA, until
Sept. 2. I will then move to San Diego.

To clarify for all, I felt OK riding the bike, but thought the sizing chart
indicated the 61 cm was the largest made, so thought it may have been too
big. Seems like a lot of people with the same PBH have done fine with the
61.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Best regards,
Pat

I’ve never weighed it but it’s certainly no light weight. I’d guess lum is
pretty closecould easily loose a couple pounds by changing the saddle and
bag. In spite of the weight it never feels like a dog to me. Very comfortable
on long rides.

Would anyone be interested in the bags for $120.00 shipped CONUS?

[RBW] Re: Weight weenie report. Dia Compe 980 brakes

2018-08-23 Thread R. Alexis
The new Dia-Compe 980 brakes look interesting. I have the original
Dia-Compe 980 brakes,
http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=D2AA4D24-29A3-4F50-B3CD-C789F21E144E=117=144

in use on my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 retro build and on my 1987 Schwinn
Voyageur 27" to 700c conversion. Don't know why Dia-Compe didn't come up
with a different model# for these brakesh.

As for the 27" to 700c conversion, it may be a case by case issue on how
well it works. When I initially built this frameset up I used some hybrid
wheelset and Dia-Compe 984 brakes. The brakes didn't allow for the pads to
hit the rims squarely. I still rode it. When I sold the bike I mounted some
high profile Shimano Deore DX post style brakes. When I got the bike back
and revamped the build I mounted some 980 brakes. These work well in use.
The front have to be adjusted to the point that the brake arms angle
slightly downward. I have a Dia-Compe quick release roller straddle cable
carrier along with quick release TRP RRL brake levers help in getting the
brakes unhooked for wheel removal. With both quick releases it is possible
to get the brakes open enough so the wheel can clear without unhooking the
brakes from the straddle cable.
