[RBW] Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne

2018-08-26 Thread Joe Bernard
I've owned a half dozen Rivs and most of them were at least partially built
with stuff I had lying around.

As others have noted, those old LX cranks need a long spindle which could take
some work to find. I believe what you have now is a cup-and-cone BB, I'll bet
you could install it on your Sam with fresh grease and it'll be good to go. But
you'll need tools for that style.

[RBW] Re: Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne

2018-08-26 Thread dougP
Bottom brackets don't have to cost a lot of money.  Get the correct one;
maybe call Rivendell for guidance.

Based on personal experience & observation, lots of Rivendells get built up
with interesting mixes of parts. Over time, lots of people change the
build as their needs change. So whatever you start with may likely evolve
with time. That's part of the fun.

[RBW] Re: Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne

2018-08-26 Thread DarinM
Absolutely build with what you have/think makes the best build. I built my
Altantis with a mix of 80's/90's and some new-ish parts. Granted it's an
early 2000's frame but I would build it the same if I bought a new one
today. Riv-ish builds do not need to be, nor are they commonly made of all
new parts, they should just be quality parts that work well (ie, a longer
BB in your case) and are a joy to use.

[RBW] Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne

2018-08-26 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi,

I just bought a New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne 60cm frame, and am going
through the travails of building it out. This is my first Rivendell and
I'm pretty excited about it, but it is also my first full build and I'm
finding out all sorts of stuff I didn't know.

It feels slightly sacrilegious to say this, but I was hoping to use some
used drivetrain parts I already have, so I can start riding the Sam
sooner. I'd love some shiny new parts but I just spent more than I
intended on a frame. Do other RBW owners use older parts, or is that more
of classic and vintage thing? The parts I'm hoping to use are Shimano
Exage 300LX parts from a barely used 1992 XO-3. The main problem now is
the that the bottom bracket in the bike is too short, so the crank would
rub the chainstay. On the other hand, I think the grease is all dried up
in there, so it might be just as easy to replace it as fix it.

Advice and opinions are welcome!

[RBW] Re: Have dynamo wheel your Roadeo?

I don't notice drag with any of my many dynamo hub wheels (SP, Kasai by SP,
SON, Shimano), but I _do_ notice a vibration at some speeds with all of
them. It's subtle, but if you're riding smooth roads you should be able to
sense it. Is it a problem? No. All non-racing bikes should have full time
dynamo lighting.

Re: [RBW] Have dynamo wheel your Roadeo?

2018-08-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Addenda:

Sanyo and Union bottle dynamos, on, LED and Halogen lights: "on" is the
equivalent of a moderate headwind, but not as much of a "drag" (hahahaha)
as sluggish tires with thornproof "True Goo" tubes, like the tiresets I
installed yesterday on a donor bike.

Sanyo bb dynamo: yes, you can tell when it is engaged, but it's like a
smaller headwind, a very small and modest headwind.

12-V bottle with halogen (as bright as 6-V with latest LED!): less drag
than the Sanyo bb; IIRC, hardly more noticeable than a SON 20R.

[RBW] Have dynamo wheel your Roadeo?

2018-08-26 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Bike still run just as fast or did the dyno hub cause perceptable drag?

Thinking of SON hub dyno wheelset. My Roadeo runs really enjoyably fast so I
don’t want to slow it down. If you felt it did on yours let me know.

Thanks for your thoughts on your experience.

[RBW] Summer’s Wild Rumpus

2018-08-26 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
In which I share a variety of images from a medly of adventures so far this
summer.

I’ve been blessed to ride most every day, despite stupidly breaking a few ribs
(I switched to knobbier tires, Racing Ralph instead of Thunder Burt) and some
stunningly smokey days from the conflagerations in California. I still can’t
figure out on those über smokey days if I’m better off with the super heated
yet cleaner air from a bandit-style bandana, or without it. I’ve been through
torential rain, hot and humid (90’s with 70% humidity a few days), and hailed
upon, with tornados and wall clouds surrounding me. Wild rumpus sums it up
nicely! Grin.

[RBW] Re: urban/city tire rec: 650b, 38mm or so

2018-08-26 Thread Jim M.
Schwalbe G-One Allround is a nice tire in 650x40. I also have the Allround
in 650x57 set up tubeless. For a nice budget tire, I like the Conti Tour
Rides that I got from Riv. Wired bead, $22, a continuous center strip so it
rolls pretty well, and they've been bombproof for me.

[RBW] WTT: my Large MUSA shorts for your Mediums

2018-08-26 Thread Eric Daume
I ended up with three pairs of MUSA shorts in large, but I'm really more of
a medium waist.

If someone has the opposite issue, let's talk!

Mine are black, green, and grey. I think the greys might actually be XL,
even though they're labeled as Large--they seem looser, and the drawstrings
are really long.

Thanks,

[RBW] FS: Roadini F/F/HS/BB/SP 61cm Blue

2018-08-26 Thread scott minor
I’ve had this frame since they first shipped last year and still have not
completed the build. Now I have my eye on a more classical frame (level top
tube) that will serve the same function, run the same wheels, tires, so I’m
offering up the Roadini for sale.
I have mounted wheels and stem but otherwise the frame is NOS and shows no
flaws. If you’re looking for a Roadini in stunning Riv blue, here’s a chance
to save some $.
Asking $725 w headset, BB, seat post + shipping

Did you use the older version of stampede pass? Or extra light? I am using this

Perspective is everything.
