[RBW] Favorite grips for bar end shifters?

2018-10-21 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
Went for a 30 mile ride today on the Albatross bars, and somewhere between
20 and 25 miles I found myself wishing for some part of the grip with more
padding. Right now the main grip area is just a wrap of Neubaum's tape and
the rest is bare metal. I didn't have great luck with the last cork grips
I tried, but maybe the new ones are better. I just put something like the
Dutch Paddle grips on my son's bike and was about to get some for me but
I'm not sure how to make them work with bar ends. I'm tempted to try the
silicone ones that Riv sells, but I'd love to hear about other solutions.

2018-10-21 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
I think he mentioned his wife's involvement as an affirmation that it's
good enough that she had to have her own. At least that's how I read it.
Mismatched tires are somewhat common amongst the general bike owner

mention bags. This explanation is also apt for the 9 vs 10 speed mistake. :)

[RBW] Washington, D.C. Rides/Recommendations.

2018-10-21 Thread EasyRider
David,

You might try a nighttime tour of the mall and monuments using capital bike
share. It will probably still be crisp and not near cold by Chicago standards.
Just start where ever is closest to your hotel and make a circle of the
reflecting pool. You'll see the following:

Lincoln memorial
Vietnam veterans memorial
Korean War memorial
WWI and WWII memorials
Smithosonian buildings, including the new African American history museum,
The us capitol and arboretum,
The Washington monument, and more.

Once you've seen those, you could walk or ride around the tidal basin and see
the Jefferson, FDR, and MLK memorials.

At night the memorials are a bit different and the crowds more sparse.
Bikeshare bikes have lights but you may want to bring a cygolite or similar if
you have one.

Several of the bridges crossing the Potomac are being repaired at the moment,
so some crossing may be easier than others. The Arlington loop is a fine
choice for a longer ride, but I would suggest an short afternoon ride to
gravelly point instead. It's simply a spot on the Virginia side of the river
next to DCA where one can watch planes takeoff and land, a la Wayne's World.
Also some nice views of dc across the Potomac.

[RBW] Drop Bar Mixte? Yves Gomez/Betty Foy Geometry?

2018-10-21 Thread David B
Built up a new-to-me Yves Gomez today as an upright single speed. Wald bars as
placeholders, with Ahearne/MAP bars on the way.
However, I’m more upright than my Clem, though I could lower the stem a few cms
still.
I’m now wondering if a drop bar build is a possibility. Seems like similar
reach as my Redwood. Also I would just need a stem and I have some spare drop
bars and brake levers.
So, questions are...
Anyone with a drop bar mixte?
Can’t find geometry - anyone have geo chart for Betty Foy/Yves Gomez?

[RBW] FS / take any offers: Jim Blackburn racks

2018-10-21 Thread Joe Bunik
hi BOBs

Acquired along with the Gordon Factory 2nds Rack Mountain were several
old-style "Jim Blackburn" rear racks -- some variations amongst,
possibly Bruce-modifications for rapid prototyping.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/sets/72157674742384888

Would like them gone -- just let me know any rack(s) you want and I'll
send 'em your way. Please spare me the measure-and-fit questions ;-)
but, I am happy to snap a shot or two of any specific rack if you are
extra curious.

So, any offer from $0 to $100 works, for however many I can get into a
box -- certainly "several" should nest. Shipping for rack/s in my
experience runs right about +$20/large box so we'll call it that.

Just LMK.

UPDATE:
Thanks for the recommendations.
I got an orange SKS Renkompressor.
Works great and very nicely built!
Easy on/off of presta and Schrader valves and shoots in surprisingly large
volume of air per stroke.

[RBW] New Hilsen

2018-10-21 Thread phil k
Made in Taiwan. Seat lug is ball & socket so it costs less. It allows them to
do a 6 degree slope. So less variations of lugs to carry in inventory. Also
allows less sizes to fit over more ranges. I believe bottom bracket is filet
brazes so no bottom bracket lugs needed.

2018-10-21 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Cheaper price cuz made in Taiwan instead of USA now.

New model has a six degree (I think) sloping top tube and other frame diffs
from the previous MUSA version.

They have an online catalog on their rivbike.com site where you can view
the model and read about all its frame features.

[RBW] New Hilsen

2018-10-21 Thread David
Apologies if you've gone over this already; I searched for the potential
thread, but could not find. Question: Why is the new Hilsen *new*, and
why is it cheaper now? IIRC, I paid $1800 for my frame set in 2010, and a
few years after that it reached $2K+ for the frame set. Thanks for your
time.

[RBW] Article from Cycling News....Just Ride.....I think I heard that some where before

2018-10-21 Thread Jay LePree
Excerpt from Cycling News.

"Trends across the cycling industry as a whole seem to be nudging away from
elite pro racing and more into experiential events of gran fondos,
bike-packing, and gravel riding. With professional racing becoming much
more data-driven, the pushback sees many embracing more soulful cycling
adventures. Then, the pro riders use their platforms on social media to
share stories, photos, and more.

Italian pro Daniel Oss
(Bora-Hansgrohe)
has also been exploring the genre with his “Just Ride” series, hitting
Italian back-roads in a mix of adventure and training.

“I was sick of racing. It was too much Strava records, too much training,
and too much focus on racing,” Oss said. “We are always in the hotels,
racing, in the airplanes, or training. We get to these amazing places
during the season, but we never can enjoy them. I rediscovered the love of
the bike. When I was young, I was just riding my bike for fun. That’s how
we all started, right?”
