[RBW] For Sale in Seattle: Nitto, Nigel Smythe, Velo-Orange, Gran Bois, MB-3

2018-10-27 Thread Rob
All items OBO, and plus the actual cost of the shipping method of your
choice, with local pickup in Seattle preferred. As always, if the price
seems out of line for the item, make me a reasonable offer.

*Nitto Mark’s Rack*. Designed by Mark at Rivendell, made by Nitto. Super
versatile. Can be mounted on the front to support a randonneur bag, or on
the rear to support a big rear saddlebag. $100.

*Nitto Big Rear Rack*. The older version without the diagonal
cross-bracing. Nicer, IMO $150.

*Tubus Fly Classic Rear Rack.* Stainless steel, narrow and sleek. $90.

*Nitto S83 2-bolt Seatpost*. 27.2mm diameter, 200mm long. (50mm shorter
than the standard one you can get from Rivendell for $97.) Shows definite
evidence of use, but still beautiful and functions perfectly. $60.

*Nitto Jaguar SP-72 Track 2-Bolt Seatpost*. Brand new, never been mounted.
27.2mm. Please note: Rail mounting slots are narrower than standard and
ONLY fit track-style saddles. (I missed this!) $45.

Rare *Nigel Smythe Tweed Trunk Sack*, excellent condition, with rain cover.
(Mark's Rack shown for scale, not included, but available separately--also
listed for sale here.) $100.

*Velo-Orange Cigne Stem* Brand new. Mounted once, never ridden. Highly
polished version. 31.8mm clamp (use shims if you need 'em). 145mm from
bottom of stem to centerline of clamp. Similar to the Cunningham Limp Dick
stem Crust makes, but with a little less extension and the handy removable
face plate. And half the price, for this one. :) $60.

*Gran Bois Randonneur bars*. About 37mm at the hoods. Just like the current
Compass bars, with the slight upsweep as the bar moves away from the stem
n’ all. SUPER comfortable, just like Jan says. A bit of goo from bar tape,
but I got most of it off. $75.

*Bridgestone MB-3 *Not perfect, but nice. Currently set up as a drop-bar
single-speed, with the above-mentioned Gran Bois bars and a White
Industries Eccentric ENO hub laced to a wide mountain-bike rim. I have all
the original parts--rear wheel with 7-spd cassette, stem, chainrings,
Ritchey bars, thumbies, front and rear derailleurs. $350 for everything,
$250 for the original MB-3 only.

Try a seat post shim of the same thickness, such as this
, and cut it to length. Seat post shims are
generally 3" in length so you should have just enough material to work with.

[RBW] Re: Coverting a Rivendell to Lower Trail

2018-10-27 Thread dougP
Several years ago, I converted my 58 cm, 700c wheeled Atlantis to 40 mm
trail, vs the 65 mm of stock. The reason for the change was to cure an
irritating wander at low speeds on hills. I always have several pounds up
front in an Acorn Boxy Rando bag. Like you, I was concerned about the law
of unintended consequences, and fortunately encountered none. The wander
as reduced noticeably, and there are no problems created by the low(er)
trail.

The 40 mm figure was suggested by several people knowledgeable about trail
and Rivendells, including the builder who had done several Rivs before
mine. The change is admittedly subtle and certainly not an "aha" moment.
It is definitely not the religious experience claimed by some of the low
trail adherents.

[RBW] Seattle area bike packer?

2018-10-27 Thread Tim Butterfield
In case my Atlantis needs to be shipped, I might need to find a bike shop
that can be trusted to correctly and safely pack it for BikeFlights. I do
not trust my local shop to do it, but am willing to take it anywhere
between Bellingham and Seattle to find the most trustworthy shop to do it.

For those who have already been through this process, what Seattle area
shop would you most trust to be able to do it right?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Coverting a Rivendell to Lower Trail

2018-10-27 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'd think that the best way to convert a Riv to low trail is to sell the
Riv and buy a low-trail bike. Low trail, mid-trail, and high trail are
fundamental aspects of a bike, IMO, and if the trail doesn't match what
you're looking for then get one that does.

[RBW] Coverting a Rivendell to Lower Trail

2018-10-27 Thread DarinM
Like you said, shallow hta could be an issue, but wheel size is also a factor.
Any hta could be made to be low trail with enough fork offset, but flop will
increase as a result. You could change the fork length to steepen the hta but
that will also lower the bb, which is already pretty low on Rivendells. I think
you could probably convert a 72 degree hta Riv to low trail without serious
effects to the rest of the geometry, but models with 71 degree might not handle
great. Take a look at JimG’s trail calculator if you haven’t yet.

I love the way my Atlantis and Bleriot handle, but am working on my first low
trail project just to see what it’s like. I’ve been considering the above
geometric factors to determine if the frame/fork combo will work out, but in
the end I just decided to go for it. So many small things will change it’s hard
to say what the net result will be. The frame and fork I’m using were both used
and pretty cheap so I’m not committed to anything custom, but the result is a
bit of a crap shoot.

2018-10-27 Thread David Wadstrup
Thanks so much for all of your help and suggestions. It’s more than likely I
will end up going with the WI. I’ll just have to learn to live with the black
rings. For those of you that have or have used this crank what can you
tell me regarding its compatibility with STI? Does it shift nicely? Is there
anything I should be aware of?

Also, since opening this discussion, I’ve done a bit of research and thinking
regarding gearing and the front chainrings’ toothcount. I’ve gotten some good
advice and think I’ll end up with a 48/32(with a 12-34 11sp cassette in back.)
This is a pretty sizable jump it seems. Doable, but advisable? The 48 will
likely give me the biggest gear I’ll need, and the 32 will make handling the
hillier hills much more pleasurable. But do you think I’ll compromise shifting
with a 16 tooth jump? Would anyone suggest a different 11sp cassette?

Thanks again.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone ridden both 26"/700c Atlantis'?

2018-10-27 Thread William Henderson
Hi Darin,
I never owned a 26” Atlantis, just ridden one that is similarly setup to mine
(noodles roughly even with saddle). I’m sort of in the middle of sizes on the
Riv sizing chart (6’, 31” inseam, I forget my pbh), but I feel supremely
comfortable on my 61cm and on the smaller bike I did indeed feel cramped.
Perhaps that could probably be adjusted for with the right stem and saddle set
back. That said, as I graduated to running bigger and bigger tires on my
Atlantis, standover became somewhat of an issue for me. It was fine on roads
but on rough stuff I often wondered if I should be on a smaller frame. That
(and wanting to run even bigger tires without taking off my fenders) was what
ultimately motivated me to convert it to 650b. And yes it does now roll just a
touch slower on smooth roads. 

[RBW] Re: Anyone ridden both 26"/700c Atlantis'?

2018-10-27 Thread Drw
I’ve owned a 700c/29er hunqapillar, 26in Atlantis and 650b Atlantis. I’ll
second what a few have said. The main difference lies in the wheel size.
26-faster from stop, slower once going. 29-slower from stop, faster once going.
650b-happy middle (for me at least). The geometry matches and is essentially
irrelevant...because it works on each size really well.
That said, I think you’re way too big for a 56cm bike, and moving up a size or
several will be much more comfortable. I have an 85-86 pbh and feel like 56cm
is on the small side for me.
