[RBW] FS: Orange Roadini frame 54cm

2018-10-31 Thread Joe Bernard
I know I know, I promised not to sell this one but I lucked into a raging deal
on a NIB Appaloosas frame, then a raging deal on a Seven and...it's a long
story involving I'm out of bike-storing room again. F/F/HS/post/BB, new a few
months ago, very low miles (like, embarrassingly low).
54cm
$700 plus Bike Flights, probably about $50.

The whole schlamozzle is for sale, too (now has Albas, not risers), but the
build is probably too eccentric for y'all. Open to chats about partial builds
with those new wheels, they have maybe 20 miles on them.

Re: [RBW] A Boy, A Bike, and A Benefactor

2018-10-31 Thread Joe Bernard
To clarify the saddle situation, it's already been Obenaufed a few times and
ridden a while by me. I imagine it's still pretty stiff for Ethan's weight, but
it'll break in quickly at the rate he's riding.

2018-10-31 Thread Leah Peterson
Mr. Tom,
What a fantastic letter - I can’t wait to read this to Ethan. Your points about
using the bike without worry of beausage are spot on and we will adopt that
mindset! The Clem truly is “A Tough Bike To Love.” Congrats on your 2nd Clem,
and may there be a Clem L in your wife’s near future!

Re: [RBW] A Boy, A Bike, and A Benefactor

2018-10-31 Thread tc
Hey Ethan!

I'm really liking your Clem! I'm wondering, which handlebar bag are you
using? It looks to be just the right size ... not too big, not too small.
And the honey-colored Brooks saddle ... well ... I'm just sayin', it looks
super *handsome *(not pretty ... ugh). I have a honey Brooks saddle on my
Clem, too.

So, crazy story here ... I had a Clem just like yours once. Same color,
just a bit bigger. I sold it, and pretty much regretted it ever since.
So, I got another one! Yep, folks think I'm kinda crazy, but oh well. My
wife definitely thinks I'm crazy, but then, she loves my Clem :) She
thinks it rides better than any of my bikes! She has long legs like me, so
she may just get the same size as mine, but the "L" model.

I know the Brooks saddles take a while to break in, but they're worth it.
You need to take that saddle off every week and massage it with Proofide
every week for a while, pressing in hard with the heel of your hand, all
over the top. Don't forget the underside, either. Proofide will help
protect the bottom of the saddle from any water splashing up as you ride
through puddles, or in rain. Get the edges, too. Doing this will not only
protect the leather from drying out, and from moisture, but it will also
really help the saddle loosen up over time and conform to the, ahem, shape
of your backside. And the more you ride, the more your saddle will loosen
up, and the better it'll feel. Eventually you won't need to Proofide it
but 2 or 3 times a year...and it will be the best-feeling saddle you've
ever felt.

You're one lucky dude, and I know you know that. I also know you're
probably scared of scratching it, or crashing it into something, or just
messing something up. Don't worry. The guy who designed your Clem (you
probably know about him by now, Mr. Grant Petersen) designed Clem's to be
really tough. In fact, we all think he likes it better when people don't
worry about scratching or dinging their bikes because that means they're
being well-used. I'm sure he would tell you to Just Ride that bike and
have fun, and don't worry about hurting it! It can take it.

Anyway, just wanted to congratulate you on your new bike, and wish for you
many fun miles riding around on it!

Mr. Tom

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-31 Thread 'Forrest' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've had two of each. I agree completely with Max Beach's assessment,
especially this: "Roadeo is a bit lighter, feels a bit more sprightly on
the steep climbs. But just a bit. They are both smooth as butter and very
comfortable."

2018-10-31 Thread tc
Hmm, so, what's holding you back? It's just money, right?! I know, I
know. Seriously, if you don't want/need the complete, and it's a matter of
getting the frame and some good used components, list what you'd need here
and I'll bet you'd have it in no time. I know I have some stuff to offer,
and there are plenty here who've sold far more components than I've ever
owned who'd jump at the chance to help out and clean off their shelves!

[RBW] FS: MUSA shorts, U-Fix, size XL

2018-10-31 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello folks-

I have a pair of MUSA shorts, size XL that I've got kicking around. They
are overall good, but need repair to make them completely functional again,
and I'm not going to get around to fixing . The elastic belt has been
replaced in last couple years. There are spots and such from years of use.
Both rear pocket buttons are missing. And the right rear pocket is
separating from body, needs restitching.

I'm asking $15 for these shorts, price includes shipping in the US. Payment
can be done via PayPal or Square Ca$h. Please message me if you are
interested.

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-10-31 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Roadini specs from RBW:
Roadini:
“0.9 x 0.7 TT and the length is cut from the butt (0.9) end. So you get the
0.9 up at the front, where top tubes buckle. The 0.7 is on the thick side
for a belly (though it's the same as old Columbus SP, which was 1.0 x 0.7 x
1.0--as a historical reference).

The 0.7 seat-post end is light. But that's the least stressed portion on a
top tube. We use the same tube on our heavier bikes, but they're not
"chopped from the butt." Weight difference is minimal.

DT is a tapered tube--31.8 x 1.1 at the head tube, to 28.6 x 0.8 at the
bottom bracket. It's another "chopped from the butt" tube, to minimize the
1.1 length, but still giving it a lot of buckle-resistance.

You might wonder why a tapered tube here, and why not fatten it at the BB?
(Like Serotta's old "Colorado Concept" tubes were.) Well...almost all of
the tilting/fatigue stress down there at the crank is localized on the base
of the seat tube. I've seen 30 bikes (not all ours, thanks...) break there,
and zero break at the downtube. Strain gauge stess analysis reveals that
the stress is light on the down tube, heavy on the seat tube.

That's why, on our TIG'd bikes, the seat tube is 1.1 there, and ovalized
laterally to 34.9 x 28.6.”

Re: [RBW] 650B conversion for my Road Standard?

2018-10-31 Thread Patrick Moore
OS recommends 2 fl oz per road tire, 4 fl oz per mtb tire. I've found that
less works fine, and I probably put in 1.5 fl oz in a 26" road tube and I
do add 2 fl oz to my 700C X 60 (actual) tubeless tires every 3 months or
so. I'd guess that our goathead populations are as large as any others (if
yours are works, gawd help you!).

OS in tubes seems to last 12 to 18 months, at least, possibly longer,
though I've had to replace sealant-ized tubes for various reasons; bad
valve attachments, in several of my Schwalbe tubes.

(Hope to try Orange Seal Endurance Formula starting next year; will remove
tires and remove excessive OS Regular build up early in 2019, should I and
the world at large be around then.)

The Compass ELs do sound like a good option, and I really don't want to
have to give up these brakes and buy new wheels. How much Orange Seal would
be recommended? I'm guessing around one ounce per tube?

Thanks for the generous offers to test some 650B wheels, unfortunately it's
a long haul from Reno, I don't think that's going to work for me.

I do have a Velo Orange sprung saddle on another bike (Bridgestone XO-3), I
could test whether I feel any benefit using that saddle. I will say I
haven't felt it doing much on my XO-3 to soak up the bumps, maybe I just
can't tell.

Regarding the bar height, I think that photo makes it look a little more
extreme than it actually is, but I'll try dropping them a bit to test the
impact.

Compass ELs with Orange Seal in tubes (and sufficient air pressure) are a
very workable goathead-country combination. I'd say that the tire savers
would be largely cosmetic if you have the sealant, and in fact -- haven't
tested this, but observations over the years may indicate it -- having the
little thorns stay in the casing a while before being flicked off may
actually help with the sealant's efficacy. But I still have a stash of the
tire savers myself, though none installed.

I've never done a 650B conversion, but I'd question whether an early Riv
Road is the best platform: more bb drop, insufficient room for the fatter
584 bsd tires (can the original Riv Roads take 650B X 42?), the ride
quality of the original as it was intended to be built up; and lastly, the
availability of Compass EL tires in the 700C width that will fit your
frame. My roads were built for 26" wheels and can take 32s and fenders, but
I find the actual-width 28 mm Elk Pass tire all I need in the way of speed
and comfort for road riding (these are labeled 32 and measure 27 and 29 on

The fanciness of the Rambouillet intimidates me, to be honest. My other
tall bikes are purpose-built and very workman-like, and they get the job

Redwood green over Rambouillet blue. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I had

very secure. I have the rack on a few bikes and my wife and I move the seat
between the bikes when we're going on a ride. Overall, I've been happy with
the setup.

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-10-31 Thread Kalmia Vt
My Appaloosa (55cm) with fenders, front Mark's Rack and rear pannier rack,
three water bottle cages and two semi-full bottles, frame pump, bell, and
mirror, B-17 saddle, Gilles Berthoud front bag (with snacks, spare jersey,
spare tube, tire levers, spare rechargeable light, and Crank-Brothers
lightweight tool set), Silver triple crank, M-520 pedals, drop bar with
cotton tape (Newbaum's, bright red) and three coats of shellac (amber),
front and rear dynamo lights, SP dynamo hub, 36 spoke wheels, Cliffhanger
rims, and WTB Riddler 700 x 45 tires (tubeless) weighs 41.0 pounds, as
measured with the weigh-each-end-on-the-bathroom-scale method. Removing the
pump, bag (and contents) and bottles to comply with the OP's stipulation
reduces the weight to 33.5 pounds.

[RBW] Rear racks for kid seats

2018-10-31 Thread Kainalu V.
Having used the Yepp rack for years now, I declare that the only drawbacks are
weight and that there's no pannier rails other than the grossly oversized top
rail, which would work fine with strap on panniers. I brazed on some lower
rails to get past the no pannier drawback (and made it even heavier!). The
weight thing is so they, unlike Tubus or Nitto, can proudly say to go ahead and
put your kid on this. The seat attachment system is quick and secure. In my
opinion, if anyone's got major issues they want to complain about on the
internet regarding these ugly, heavy, beautifully designed racks, their
problems likely extend well beyond bike parts. Buy with confidence.

[RBW] Re: Stronglight Fenders

2018-10-31 Thread Cody Bartz
I ended up finding a used pair of Velo Orange Zeppelin 52mm fenders. I
talked to Peter and it sounds like these are not rolled, providing lots of
space. You could size them similar to a plastic fender.

[RBW] Re: 68cm Rambouillet

2018-10-31 Thread Julian Westerhout
Lon,

You say you've been dreaming of a Redwood, but you're selling its first
cousin, the Rambouillet! The Redwood was a tall-sizes only, slightly
cheaper, slightly less fancy version of the bike you already own -- from
the 2003 Riv catalog: ""The Romulus and Redwood are complete road bikes
based on the same frame design ideals as the Rambouillet, and only minor
differences that allow a lower price without structural or real
compromises."

You already own your dream bike! Perhaps you might want to reconsider
selling it?

Thanks to Norman I had a great time reading the BQ mags. Time to pass them
along to another bunch member. PM me and I’ll let you know if you are first in
line. 13 content-packed issues. I’ll cover shipping to any US address. The
catch is you have to pass them along when you are done reading. OK?
