[RBW] Re: Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread phil k
Not only cost of materials but cost of time may be associated. The Hilsen
are relatively the same frame as it was a few years ago, just canti
provisions. However, the MIT Homer's have not been around. So there must've
been a lot of time associated with Riv designing in the new geometry, then
the time it cost them to go back and forth with the factory to get it set
the way they like it.

Re: [RBW] Crankset question, 1x11 advice?

2018-11-23 Thread Eric Daume
11 speed will be a two piece crank with an external bottom bracket. The
bottom bracket will come with spacers to fit 68 or 73 mm shells.

Narrow wide tings are typically made for a chain size (eg, 10 or 11 speed).
The wider 8 speed chain will have a loose fit and won’t be officially
recommended, but it might work well enough, depending on how you ride.

[RBW] Re: Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread Justin, Oakland
I imagine it has a lot to do with future proofing their prices. Every time they
raise prices people grumble and Grant apologizes. If you start pricing things a
little higher from the get go you can wait a bit longer to raise prices, maybe
even get some more cash flow and be able to float a little more gently in the
ups and downs of the boutique not-bespoke-but-not-mass-market bike world.

Relatedly I sometimes worry about the bike industry going the way of the
clothes industry. Currently the middle of the clothes market is tanking. “High
end mall stores” like J Crew represented the middle tier market and are going
extinct. As fast fashion comes in and pumps poorly made garments at rock
bottom prices they eat away at lots of sales at the mid-tier range. I wonder
what a similar stratification of the bike market looks like and where Riv fits
in.

I remember Grant writing that cassettes cranked down to 30 N-m is how bikes

an easy enough time getting the lockring loose that I routinely take the

[RBW] Rivendell offerings I'm thankful for

2018-11-23 Thread Matt Beecher
1. Saluki
2. Bringing back the coffee mug. It is my go-to mug.
3. Atlantis (past and present)
4. Impact on cycling community. Even if Rivendell closes one day, they made a
positive impact on the market that I have enjoyed and I am grateful for it.

Ya know what, forget it. I like Rivs and I like the people who work there, a
small company trying to hold on during tough times in the bicycle industry. I'm
currently on a site dedicated *to that company*, and have to hear weird crap
about zealotry and "church of Grant and his minions." That's toxic and a
complete waste of my time and mental health. Y'all carry on, I'm done with

Nah No reason to leave Clayton. I too can see how this
place and a few "Riv followers/defenders/etc." can be seen like church
zealots, but zealots are zealots and they'll use *anything* as an excuse(in
this case Riv/GP) for their behavior ... " I'm only defending *fill in the
blank* so that excuses my behavior however that may be" .

LIke 2 sides of the same one coin, one always blaming the other for why
they are as they are, threatening to annihilate the other... but of course
no one side will ever win because that would the end of both and neither
side wants that.. and the charade goes on .

Have a chuckle ... on me .

Controlling the message.."

This is not "disappointed in the direction a frame took", it's disappointment
with Grant directly, followed by an accusation. You can't change the original
topic, then debate the the thing you changed it to. I've been doing this a long
time, kids.

Controlling the message is bad? It’s something most companies try to do, to
one extent or another, whether it’s thru advertising, social media, or
publishing your own magazine, or a Blug post.

I reread Clayton’s original post, and I don’t see anything offensive about
it. He says he was disappointed about the direction this frame took, and
expressed what he would rather have. It’s OK to have a different viewpoint
from Riv.

Folks riding with a waxed cotton shell, how do you not end up with a sweaty bog

boiled wool. But then there is a difference between Memphis cold and Colorado
highland cold. Grin.

With abandon,

2018-11-23 Thread Joe Bernard
On the TIGed frame - the one that would align in price and welding with Clem L
- the immediately apparent differences would be toptube height (higher),
threadless steerer and a different fork. I presume the ST/TT sizing will be
different, too.

I'm not going to "take it easy", and as long as people keep pushing back on me
I'm going to keep responding. The stuff accusing Grant of "controlling the

So you can accept my opinion on the subjects or you can keep telling me to

[RBW] Re: Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
I wasn't unclear on your curiosity. I was unclear on precisely which
question you were asking. Now I think I understand that your two questions:

"anyone know why new MIT Homer frames cost $100 more than new MIT Sam
frames? Tubing?"

Could be rewritten to read:

"I assume that the Hilsen costs about $100 more to make than the
Hillborne. Why does the Hilsen cost about $100 to produce? Is it because
the tubing in the Hilsen is ~$100 more expensive than the tubing used in
the Hillborne?"

Assuming those were the questions you were getting at, then those were the
questions I attempted to touch on. As far as I know, the tubing in both
bikes are similar in price. I do not think we can attribute the price
difference to tubing.

Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of fixed mountain riding

2018-11-23 Thread Patrick Moore
I prefer retention, partly for safety, because your feet can get spinning
pretty fast, and partly just because I like retention on all my pedals and
find SPD-type clipless the easiest and most convenient. I've used clips and
straps both with and without slotted cleats. Both work, but I found myself
repeatedly pulling my non-cleated shoes out of even semi-tight straps when
climbing hills, so I abandoned clips/straps without cleats on all except
the Hon Solo, which doesn't see many hills -- it's my grocery store,
dog-walking, near-to-home bike, so it's fine that way.

When I used slotted cleats and straps on my '99 Joe Starck, I actually
found the system easier to get into, with straps kept semi-tight (ie, tight
enough to allow you to pull up without pulling out, but loose enough to
pull out in an emergency) than with my Look Keos and almost as easy as with
the single-sided SPDs on the bike now.

I've heard of many people riding fixed without retention, but I would not
want to be non-retained on a fast downhill, and I find that retention
certainly helps me to exert more torque up steep hills.

[RBW] Re: Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I'll add that time and an associated increased cost could be major factors.
From the perspective of "older" to "newer", there is the Appaloosa ($1300)
to the Hillborne ($1400) to the latest Hilsen ($1500). I know the Cheviot
could be considered an outlier in that logic, and in several ways, but it
does seem to me that the prices are increasing, at least to some degree,
just based on time and costs.

That said, I would love to know about tubing changes or specs that add to
the cost, not that there is anything wrong that I know of with the older
tubing. I have a new Hilsen frame coming this next week so it will be
interesting to see (and ride once I get it built and the weather
cooperates) how it feels compared to other bikes.

stand to reason that custom frames wouldn't be "in stock" as that would
defeat the purpose of "custom".

A full custom lugged would be out of my budget. Whatever I get, it’s likely to
be my last bike, as I am getting creaky and according to my family history,

Well, according to my family history, I should have died 13 years ago.
As for /being //sure /you won't be able to ride in another 10 years - I
hardly know what to say.  That attitude will go a long way towards
making sure it's so.  No idea how old you actually are, but if you're
planning to drop dead at 90, that would make you 70 now.  I and many, if
not most, of the folks I ride with are well over 70.  2018 was a bad
year weather-wise, and my mileage is way off from last year; instead of
just missing 11,000 as was the case in 1017, I think I'm going to finish
2018 with only 9,000.

So this is a very important purchase! Probably my most important, as I’m not
rich. I have been saving up.

I don’t understand how buying a bike can be so obsessive and stressful. I can’t
blame PTSD for this one. I am a Rivendelian, and want to stay with the tribe,
but maybe this bike just isn’t for me.

[RBW] Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread tc
I’m asking because I’m curious, as I said. I thought the web site had a
misprint. Then I checked the printed catalog and saw the $100 difference. The
Sam is supposedly stouter per Riv’s description, and also has canti posts, so
more cost assumed there. So, looking at lugs, I didn’t see a vast difference.
The Homer has the ball and socket seat stay/lug treatment, which I also
understood to be cheaper to manufacture. So that left me thinking the tubing on
Homer may be more costly. And, as you say, maybe $100 a pop helps offset the
setup costs.

Gabe, can you send a pic or link of the cranks you're looking at? I should be

Eric, the "loose chain" situation doesn't apply for those 1x narrow-wide

[RBW] Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
tc asked why the MIT Homer is $100 more expensive than the MIT Hillborne. I
assume he’s getting at something specific but I’m not exactly sure what it is.

The prices are what they are because that’s where Rivendell set them. I don’t
know the cost on each, but it’s possible they are close. It’s possible that the
Hilsen has a lower cost. It would be smart for Riv to price the Hilsen at a
higher margin because it’s still a $1000 price drop from the MUSA one. The MIT
design appeals to me more, so to me it’s a better bike and it’s $1000 cheaper
than the MUSA version

It’s also possible that the Hillborne cost is lower because all the
manufacturing setup costs have been amortized over several hundred frames. The
Hilsen has a bunch of new setup expenses and the early adopters may be doing
their part to offset those costs.

The two frames are definitely different. You should buy the one you want. If
you recognize they are different you may decide to buy one of each. I think it
would be a mistake to assume one is $100 better or $100 worse.

Re: [RBW] Crankset question, 1x11 advice?

2018-11-23 Thread Eric Daume
If you want to save money, look at Chainreactioncycles. Their Shimano stuff
is often amazingly cheap. I'm guessing you could get an 11 speed crank,
shifter, derailer, and chain for <$250. Maybe less than $200, depending on
what's in stock.

The 11 speed stuff I've looked at (Shimano mtb) has a different bolt circle
than traditional cranks. So, you're probably only going to find 11 speed
rings for them. These will be narrower than your 8 speed chain. You could
run an 8 speed chain on it, but it will fit loosely, and will be more
likely to come off.

Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of fixed mountain riding

2018-11-23 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Tony,

Is foot retention required to ride fixed gear? No. Benificial? Yes. With fixed
gear you need a solid connection with the pedal so that as your feet spin
faster in that precise circle that your legs don’t quite match naturally (but
come close when running), your foot stays on the pedal at higher cadances. This
is only an issue on the fast downhills. I’ve ridden fixed with smooth platform
pedals. It’s frustrating but doable and slower than I wanted, even on a rugged,
remote curvy mtn road. Even more frustrating whn the road smoothed and
straightened out. Grin. That’s when I blew up my MKS steel toe clips on the
Colorado Trail. The clips take quite a beating, but not as much as I threw at
‘um. Shrug. Spikes on platfroms are the minimum foot retention I’d recommend. I
began riding with Catalyst pedals and they did an excellent job, up to a point.
I finally gave in and tested toeclips, and GripFast straps. Now I can really
spin fast down the hills and not have to slow down!

I’ve found two basic options of foot retention and are hearty enough for fixed
gear riding: toeclips or HoldFast straps (other straps seem likely to break
easily based on reviews). They each do best with different types of pedals:

Toeclips: I found MKS Urban pedal ideal and it worked well even with my wide
feet, though I began using a stiff leather insert to stiffen my minimalist shoe
for cycling. Nylon clips are essential for singletrack (reference blowing up
the steel MKS clip). I never snugged the straps tight, which makes for easy
in/out and my foot always stayed on easily. My issue with toe clips is three
fold: 1) bigger winter shoes in size 14 don’t fit far enough in (or not at all
in the case of my Sorels) and even my summer size 12 would benifit from being
deeper; 2) some ability to pull up on the backstroke for steep hills, but pales
compared with HoldFast straps; 3) keeps the toe in a single lateral position,
which I’d rather not have on longer rides. Hold Fast Straps solve those issues.

HoldFast Straps: I remove all pins from a VP Vice or nylon equivilant pedal
that has the gap between top and bottom and the straps work great. I’m wanting
to shift to an MKS pedal (Allways, Grip King, or Sneaker), but I’m unsure if
they will work well as they are thicker pedals and may have more pedal strikes
because of it. Pedal cornering is, of course, a bigger issues with fixed gear.
Took me time to dial in how snug to do the strap (Much easier after riding
toeclips and learning fixed gear a LOT more). Easy in and out. Easy adjustment
for different size shoes. Amazing pull upward when climbing steep hills (your
gears are your legs, and so there is sitting climbing, stomping climbing, and
then my “smallest” gear (most torque) is standing pulling up on the
backstroke). Underside of the pedal is ridable and so on starts on steep bits,
I just put in the top foot side and ride the bottom of the second pedal until I
can flip into it. Snow slickness is a not issue (once in the straps), as the
strap is the retention. An icy platform no longer means a slippery pedal.

Why not SPD? No minimalist shoe options, which is essential for me. Two,
walking is part of fixed gear, and I have no desire to walk in stiff cycling
shoes that are way too narrow.

Starting out. I’d recommend you ride spiked platform pedals and just take
things slow, without spinning too much, to get the hang of fixed gear for a
ride or more. Then try straps.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Grant's BLAHG: Gus Boots update: headbadge, etc.

2018-11-23 Thread Garth
Clayton, Have you asked Grant about the bike you describe being a custom
build and were turned down, or is your "disappointment" over a production
frame that they do not make ? What difference does it make whether it's a
production or custom ? (Dollars is no excuse when it comes to a "dream" )
