[RBW] Re: Fender hacks with marks rack & Tektro brake

2019-03-13 Thread Michael Cinibulk
I did something similar to what Friend suggests. The front of my SKS fender
broke off where I cut slots to allow my side pulls room around the fender. I
simply used aluminum flashing and attached it to the bottom of the rack using
the existing screws. Worked fine. I don’t have that setup anymore so can’t
provide photos.

[RBW] What’s your winter (re)build?

2019-03-13 Thread Fullylugged
Going to build up a '95 Road. It's due back in a week from a repair and
re-paint. It was a triple and it's going to be a 50/34 compact double instead.
8 speed 11-34 in back or similar (cause I have them in boxes on the shelf) and
a shorter reach Technomic stem instead of the Dynamic I had on it. Staying with
Nitto 135 bars and Silver DT shifters. Going to squeeze some 38mm Pascenti Pari
Motos in place of the Soma New Express (they run around 36mm). So overall, a
lighter, quicker, tighter vibe I think.

2019-03-13 Thread Jeremy Till
Hey folks, just bumping this to remind folks attending NAHBS that I'll be
hosting a little get together and garage sale Saturday morning. Details
below. The weather's looking good for Saturday so after the get-together
I'll lead a ~45 min social paced ride along the Sacramento river and
through Downtown, ending at the Convention center.

FYI, since I had a couple of questions about it, NAHBS sent out an email
this morning confirming that SABA (our local bike advocates) will once
again be hosting valet bike parking at the convention center. So if you're
coming along for the ride, no worries about parking your bike once we get
there.

Send me a personal message to RSVP and I'll send you my address. Hope to
see you there!

[RBW] Re: What’s your winter (re)build?

2019-03-13 Thread lconley
My winter rebuild is my 2014 Bombadil.

Changed Bullmoose handlebars to Nitto 75 stem (120mm) and 46 cm
Compass/Nitto Randonneur handlebars.
Changed Tektro cantilever brakes to Paul cantilevers (Neo-Retro F, Touring
R) w/Tektro TRP levers (drilled/gum) and Tektro interrupters.
Changed 40 hole Velocity Atlas rims to 40 hole Velocity Cliffhanger rims.
Changed 650b x 50 Schwalbe Big Bens to 650b x 57 (2.25) Schwalbe G One All
Rounder tires.
Changed Berthoud 60mm SS fenders to Honjo H-95 fenders. There is an
incredible amount of space left - probably could have gone with 2.35s. I
think the rear chain stays will be the limiting factor
Changed Sunrace thumb shifters to ? still haven't decided - I have Shimano
Ultegra 8 speed bar-ends that I may try to use as index shifters with the
Shimano Altus on the 7 speed IRD freewheel - yes I still use a freewheel.
It is on a Phil Wood touring hub (like a Rivvy without the slots) and
results in almost zero wheel dish = stronger wheel. Currently have Silver
downtube shifters installed.
Changed green Brooks B-17 Ti to Brooks aged B-68. Anybody want to buy a
green Brooks B-17 Ti?

Main goal is to make the bike more comfortable. I completed the Cross
Florida ride on it a few years ago, but was not real comfortable at the end
of the ride - so - wider tires, wider saddle, and handlebars with multiple
hand positions.

My favorite part about this build? Barring the chain, cables and mmmaybe
the tires, I've cobbled together the frame and 100% of the parts from
trades, for-sales and WTBs either here or over on iBOB. It's OUR bike,

[RBW] What’s your winter (re)build?

2019-03-13 Thread Joe Bernard
My winter build was this Paul Taylor frame I picked up from Bicycle Odyssey in
Sausalito late last year.

Built up as a singlespeed with Paul Centerpulls, V-O Milan bars, Nitto stem, CK
headset, American Classic post, red Brooks B17 (matches the panels EXACTLY),
105/Mavic wheels, Jack Brown Green, was Sugino now V-O cranks with ancient
Suntour 42t chainring.

It's tentatively for sale cuz my taxes are horrendous this year, but I finally
got 'er out in the sun yesterday and boy howdy do those colors pop! I'm leaning
towards just paying the bill and keeping the bike, it's a fantastic ride. Check
out the last sun pic in the album.

[RBW] What’s your winter (re)build?

2019-03-13 Thread Justin August
As we emerge from “Winter” here in the Bay Area I got to take my Saluki out
yesterday (as posted in the post yr Riv thread). I thought it would be
interesting to see how folks have decided to change their builds over the
winter as often happens.

Salukid: my upright but not uptight kid hauler.
Something I LOVE about this frame as a kid hauler is the ability to mount from
behind the saddle due to the combination of low bottom bracket and slacker seat
tube angle.
Build list:
Widest Bosco Bars (58cm?) + 12cm Nitto Stem + Ergon Grips
Thule Kid seat
Paul Levers + Brakes + Moon Units
Microshift shifter (10 sp indexed) + XT Derailleur on a road link shifting
11-40 cassette
Shimano Crank with 34t + S⁄lver chainguard + VO Sabot pedals
GOLD CHAIN
Trusty Brooks B17 select + Nitto 83 + Paul Blue Balls just for fun
Widefoot liter cage + voile strap + King Kage Iris. “Free to me” SIP water
bottle + Radavist bottle
Oldie but goodies Shimano LX Hubs to Synergy Rims + Paul Rasta Skewers + WTB
Byways
Bruce Gordon Rear Rack + Rawland Demi-porteur front rack
Carradice Bag with random straps + Safety Pizza + Donut Sacks DONUT KILL ME
strap
Rose gold bell because my daughter loves to ring it while we ride!

[RBW] Re: Fender hacks with marks rack & Tektro brake

2019-03-13 Thread lconley
The problem is the brake vs the fender. When you open the brake's quick
release, the brake pushes down on the fender and the fender onto the tire
if you are maxing tire size. Cutting away the offending fender solves the
problem, but so does using center pull brakes. I am considering a version
of this for the linear brake cable in order to put fenders on my HHH.

Note that if you are really, really pushing the tire size, the center pull
provides more tire clearance than the side pull. I have two bikes with
center pull front brakes and side pull rears - Betty Foy and Rosco Bubbe
V1. The center pull for fender clearance on the front of the Betty and the
side pull on the rear because it was a cleaner look that rigging a center
pull on the rear. The center pull for tire clearance on the front of
the Rosco and the side pull on the rear because there wasn't enough room to
cleanly put a hanger on.

Mike, I'll letcha know how it works in a couple weeks. This was set up for

I'm very interested to see how it goes for me. I think it looks fantastic!

[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis with drops?

2019-03-13 Thread Brett Callahan
I'm running my 59 with a Nitto / Fairweather bar that is effectively a 46
cm noodle with less drop. I love the bike but I've had a hard time dialing
in bars. This seems to be a keeper. I previously tried flat bars which
didn't agree with my wrists, the billie bar, which just had too
muuuch flex, and noodles and v-brake levers from Tektro that gave me
too much reach even with a short stem. Since making the change to cantis
and a more compact drop, I'm pretty happy with my setup. The bike felt
great with flats on dirt, and it feels great with drops on pavement. I'm
hoping to get it out on some dirt as currently built this weekend.

Bottom line, if you like the bike and you want to run drops, I vote go for
it. I think you'll find that the aesthetic funk will fade quickly!

[RBW] MIT Atlantis with drops?

Ok, so I'm giving some serious thought to going back down the RBW rabbit
hole again (previously had a AHH, Rambouillet and QB). I really like the
MIT Atlantis. Last year I sold my CC and LHT and have put together a Crust
Evasion which is an absolutely awesome bike. I'll be selling off my Ogre

distinct bikes. I got a silver Crust Towel rack on order and will likely
build a bike around them. That's a good way to do it, right? I also have a
Fab's Chest coming.

Anyway, I'm curious about the MIT Atlantis with drops and how it rides on
dirt roads. I imagine it's great. There's some aesthetically incongruent
about drops on a bike with such a long wheel base, but how does it actually
feel? Any down sides? The thing I like about the Atlantis is that it's
easily rackable and fenderable. It would likely go into service as my daily
driver.

I'm also giving some serious thought to a Romanceur. I know, it sounds like
I'm going full Benedict, but believe me, I started down this road years ago
and we're just crossing paths at this moment.

I have a collection of parts laying around that would be perfect for either
bike.

I have not tried the Pari Motos but I believe they were originally designed as
a thin and light “event” tire. I think Panaracer may have beefed them up a bit
over the years. I think Jan Heine mentioned something about this. They now
appear to be very similar to the Gravel Kings sharing the same tread, but
without the added flat protection. They should ride almost as well as the
regular casing Compass, but with a slightly thicker sidewall and probably less
expensive rubber compound. I had the Quasi-Moto’s on my Bombadil and they
actually road fairly decent on pavement and were comfortable but fast wearing.
I have always had good luck with Panaracer made tires. I have the Non-armored
Jack Brown Greens and Fatty Rumpkin Greens on a couple of my bikes and like
them almost as much as the standard casing Compass, though there is a
difference. My experience with Compass is while standard casing have a great
ride, the EL casings are in a whole another league that is especially
noticeable, particlarly the higher volume versions. I am dying to try the Rat
Trap Pass EL setup tubeless at about 25-30 PSI.

[RBW] 40mm tire question

2019-03-13 Thread Chad
I have also been very impressed with the ride quality of Bruce Gordon Rock and
Roads. They have a pretty aggressive tread, but roll decent on pavement with
just a faint hum and seem to be almost as supple as the Compass regular
casings. I do have them set up tubeless and am running a low 30psi. They did
measure larger than the advertised 43 width according to my calipers. IIRC,
they measured close to 45mm when first installed and have likely grown a
little. They JUST FIT with just enough clearance on my Sam with Paul Racer
sidepulls. No room for fenders and I wouldn’t want to go any larger. I would
like to try them on my Toyo-built 650B AHH but it seems to have a bit less
clearance than the Sam. They also make them in 700X43C. I have heard that the
Schwalbe G-Ones ride nice and roll fast, but their bead was so tight I couldn’t
get them installed and was fortunately able to return them. It is my
understanding that the G-Ones “Tubeless Easy” sidewalls are easily cut by the
sharp gravel that he have here in the Flint Hills of Kansas. The very popular
Dirty Kanza 200 gravel race has become a test bed for many tire manufactures
and it’s hard to find a good balance between ride quality, rolling resistance,
weight, and puncture protection. I have heard and read good things about the
Maxxis Rambler and the new line of Vittoria Terreno tires. I kind of geek out
when it comes to tires. I do like the trend towards tan colored sidewalls.
They look good on just about any bike, but specially on Rivs.

[RBW] 40mm tire question

2019-03-13 Thread Chad
Excel Sports has both the regular Panaracer Gravel King and the Gravel King SK
in all black or tan wall on sale for $32. they are Tubeless compatible. That
price is hard to beat and I plan on trying a set of the 38 SK’s mounted
tubeless on my CX bike for gravel rides. It seems that it is hard to find a
decent tires for less than $50 these days. The GK’s are light but do have an
anti-flat casing so they likely won’t be as supple as a Compass tire but
definitely better than a 900g Schwalbe Marathon. FYI, it is my understanding
that the Gravel Kings tend to run wide depending on your rim width. The 35
measures closer to 38 and the 38 advertised width is also marked as 40-622 and
meaures 40+ on modern wider width rims. They had to relabel the old 40 as a 43.

I will say the Compass tires are pretty incredible but have paper thin
sidewalls. I’ve had both the 650B Babyshoe EL and the Barlow Pass 700x38 on my
bikes. You definitely trade flat resistance and durability for ride comfort.
The Babyshoe Passes felt like I was riding on pillows and were very fast
rolling on my old Sam. It felt like I was on a totally different bike after I
switched from the Fatty Rumpkin Blues. I ended up selling it he BP’s before I
had a lot of miles, but they did survive a 50 mile rough gravel ride with some
sealant in the tubes. Early I got a flat from a small sticker just riding
around the neighborhood so I was worried. I used to be able to get Compass
tires through my LBS at a discount, but now they’ve gotten pretty dang
expensive at retail price. The Barlow Pass measured closer to 36 on my RB-T
but it has narrow Mavic MA-2 rims. The Baby Shoes were within .5mm of the
advertised 42 width on Velocity Synergy rims. Like the previous poster
mentioned, they aren’t quite as tall as some similar width tires and worked
well with fenders. Another slightly cheaper alternative to Compass is the Soma
Supple Vitesse. It is my understanding that they share the same high end
Panaracer casing as the Compass EL and can usually be found a bit cheaper
online.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rambouillet - 54cm - $1,300 + shipping CONUS

2019-03-13 Thread Chad
Any idea how big of a tire the Ram will fit? Seems like it should at least fit
a 33.33 Jack Brown. I’m just under 5’7” with an 80PBH. This would likely be
my size based on my experience owning other Rivs. Could you measure the
standover height? Thanks!
