Although Rivs can be bought as complete bikes I think most people buy the 
frames and fix them up to their needs.

I don't understand the question. You can make any of those bikes into a QB/SO 
by singleizing the cassette and adding a tensioner.

What's the closest geared Riv to the Quickbeam / SimpleOne? The 
Rambouillet? Hilsen? Can anyone with experience comment on the ride quality 
between the single (or double) speeds and the closest geared cousin?

[RBW] Re: F.S 56 cm. Simpleone

I'm shocked that this is still available! My SimpleOne is hands down the 
best bike I have ever ridden in my life. It's one of the few personal 
possessions I'm putting in storage (i.e. long-term loan to a good friend) 
when I move across the pond. The absolute perfect mix of stability and 
sprightliness.

Somebody snatch this one up!

Waxwing seat wedge and a Gilles Berthoud Alex Singer mini front rack bag. Both 
bags are excellent like new condition.  Both are light bluish grey color with 
honey leather trim. Funds from sale of this bike will go towards purchase of 
another bike.

I have three dyno wheels and another hub in a box that I don’t even need. I’ve 
even turned the corner on battery taillights, but haven’t installed a dyno one 
yet. USB taillights fail me 5 or 8 times more often than a simple battery 
Pixeo. “Oh, they’re bright AF... YESTERDAY.”

Think of it this way: if you go to another state and buy a widget, their
tax will be on the receipt. There are exceptions (clothing under a certain
amount in NYC for example), but it makes sense.
And Mark in Beacon makes an excellent point - the taxes may be helping
Riv's home state. I'm in NY so I'm not familiar with the California budget,
so let's not get political about it, because I can't hang.

There are enough of you that have the same understanding so I think it must be 
the bike should be shipped to avoid sales tax. But I like a combination of 
Roberta and Joe’s ideas - maybe a bunch of us can rendezvous at RBW for a party 
of some kind. We can ride our bikes, have a little jamboree with Listers, and 
board a plane and have our bikes shipped home. My understanding is it isn’t 
hard for Riv to ship a bike since it’s mostly assembled anyway. Roberta - there 
are very cheap flights from here to San Fran. Come see your sister and then the 
two of us will catch a flight to the Anniversary Mixte party that we have just 
invented. 

This makes me laugh. We have a slight hint of an anniversary bike of some kind 
on the horizon. Somehow, it has become a RED swoopy tubed mixte that we are all 
buying - sight unseen - and then there is going to be a fantastic gathering and 
riding ceremony where we will all swoop in and claim our special bikes at Riv’s 
HQ...which they know nothing about. Who needs marketing when you have customers 
with crazy ideas and overactive imaginations?

always a question of how much to ship versus how much is the tax.  

I bought a bike once from an out-of-state dealer---my first Riv, in 
fact---and he was kind enough to drive it over the state line into my state 
so I could take delivery and not pay the tax.  Very kind of him.  I 
suggested that I pick it up from him in *his* state and we could *say* that 
he drove it over the line, but he wanted to do it the honest way.  Neither 
of those states was California, but again---I can't imagine that California 
would be any more lenient, although they might be stricter.

Tax rules for internet sales recently changed. From what I understand, in 
addition to collecting tax in our State, the company I work for has to 
collect sales tax in those States where our sales go beyond a certain set 
minimum--a minimum which is different for each State. Kind of a nightmare, 
but I suppose there is software that notifies you when you hit the limit, 
though not sure if you then still can wait till the following tax year. I 
doubt Riv sells enough bikes to Nevada to be a problem--that would take a 
lot of anniversary mixtes going to Reno.

(But you don't want to avoid all the tax, or your roads won't get paved!;^)

I'm not an accountant and this is not accounting advice...  Perhaps there 
is a CA accountant here.  I work with accounting software, so it's not an 
unfamiliar topic to me and I'm not an expert, but then again, I'm not an 
accountant and this is not accounting advice...  :)

My understanding is that it is the delivery location and nexus (does the 
business has a presence in the delivery state?)  that determines the sales 
tax.  

I'll probably fly in, enjoy the party (hopefully we'd have one) and then 
have the bike sent to PA.  Or I'd buy it from the "sort of local" RIV 
dealer, 718 Cyclery, save the shipping but pay NY tax instead.  We could do 
a day trip from LV--it would be a short and I think inexpensive flight.  9 
hour car trip is a LONG trip.  But, you think you'd be able to tear 
yourself away from your new baby to save $500?  I bet you could get them to 
ship your bike out right after you leave, so you wouldn't need to wait to 
long for the reunion.

No matter what you decide, it will be FUN, I'm sure!

I cannot imagine making the trek to CA (it’s 9 hours to drive!) and not coming 
home with the AM either. It’s going to be pretty expensive though; I may need 
to forego the Riv experience and save like $500, plus travel expenses. But, it 
IS the Anniversary Bike, and maybe there’s an Anniversary Party, and can you 
really afford to miss THAT? Anyway, you and I are a pair. I’ll probably copy 
what you do. 

I don't agree; someone else pointed out the RS RF3 or somesuch which is
basically an AW with aluminum shell, 129 OL spacing, and 32 holes. And the
price I just saw -- #1,239.99 or so -- is certainly less than a Riv custom
frame!

Why do you dislike the Shimano 3 speed and the Alfines? (Note: No interest
in belts.)

The various kickbacks would be very worth considering, for my needs, except
that high is overdrive, not direct; the reverse would suit me fine -- 70
and 51 would be very nice.

One more remark and I'll shut up. It has been, what, 13 years since the
2003 Curt was ridden with a freewheel, let alone multiple gears (I had
local builder Dave Porter convert it to fixed in 2006, and apart from ~ 50
miles -- certainly fewer than 100 -- with the S3X after I first received
it, it has been fixed all along). So these recent rides with the S3X and
freewheel, giving a whopping 160% range *with* coasting, is really
different, and quite honestly, fun in its own arcane way.

On today's ride, once I crossed Coors Blvd, I had a ~1 mile rolling climb
where the steeper bits have me standing and breathing hard in the 70"
cruising gear. Sitting to climb, mostly in the 52.5, but on the steepest
section, the 43.75, was rather fascinating -- imagine being able to sit
while climbing! The route flattened out at the park just across Golf
Course, but thereafter, on the West side of the park, it climbed again,
steepening as you go west. Rather fun.

Question -- repeat: Do any of you use the Alfine 8? How do you like it for
drag, durability, and not slipping when under high torque?

Colin, thanks - yes, very helpful indeed.

If I take your 39cm saddle-nose-to-bar-ends straight-line distance, and:

   - Assume your saddle fore-aft and tilt position is not at either extreme 
   (doesn't look to be)
   - Add 1cm by using 13cm stem (instead of your 12)
   - Add 2cm by using a Wavie bar, which comes back 2cm less than the 
   Ahearne+Map I think you have (?)

...that resulting ballpark 42cm saddle-to-bar straight-line distance puts 
me right in between the 40.5cm I have on my Homer and 43cm on my Atlantis.  
And stem height can dial that in or out as needed.  Cool.

Ryan! You may have just arrived at the very best idea EVER. I’ve got room - 
ship all the Anniversary Mixtes to me! You guys will show me how to be a 
mechanic, then we will take our first ride on our fleet of AMs together. I will 
torture you on Killer Hill (pray it is not summer) and we will come home, you 
all can swim or soak in the spa and I’ll cook. At some point, coffee. For sure, 
dessert. 

This lights up all the pleasure centers in my brain! Everyone will be 
interviewed. We will submit it for publication to the Rivendell Reader. We will 
start a revolution and red and cream Anniversary Mixtes will dot the US map. 
And NONE of us will pay sales tax.

I can see it. Surely it will work out. 
Does Rivendell even read this stuff?

garage in Nevada.  We can all show up with our cash to reimburse you; we will 
open them all together like it’s Xmas morning.  
Next we can have an assembly party and give basic mechanical lessons to those 
interested; then we can ride your amazing hills and discuss how barre classes 
give you an unfair advantage.  Then you can write your beautiful prose about 
these amazing true mixte bikes to make all those who don’t buy one or join us 
jealous like no other. 
Just let us know the date!

First, congratulations on the new ride.  The Saluki and the AHH are 
supposed to ride the same, but have a better name?  Is that right?

I expect to be at the Baltimore Biking Spring Fling with my Butterscotch 
Appaloosa.  Any chance you'll be there?  It would be great to meet others 
from the board and see your Saluki in person.

If you purchase your bike or take delivery physically in ca you will need to 
pay sales tax. If you order it online and you have it ship to you, you will 
only pay sales tax if they have an employee in NV. 

I cannot imagine  you seeing and riding it in CA and not taking it with you 
when you’d leave!  You’d have Mixte withdrawal symptoms for a week until it 
shows up in NV

I’d probably fly in to make my purchase decision and it would be so cool to go 
on rides with others from the board!!  They would all come out to visit 
with you.

this bike, and one of them was that a bunch of us could arrange to pick up our 
bikes on the same day and do a group ride and take group photos, and wouldn’t 
we be darling? 

But it occurs to me that if out-of-staters pick up their bikes at Rivendell, we 
may have to pay CA sales tax. Does anyone know for sure? If I pay with my 
credit card via phone or website, and I pick up the bike in person, do I have 
to pay sales tax? That would be hundreds of dollars, I would imagine...

   - Saddle height is about 71 cm with a 173 mm crank arm
   - Current Stem length is 12 cm, and at the current height about 8 cm 
   from the headtube
   - Distance from saddle nose to handlebar ends is 51 cm point-to-point, 
   about 39 cm in line with the bike.

for context, I'm definitely on the lower end of the sizing charts.

I don't remember a dent there;  though there might have been one.  I think 
that when i shipped it to Rob (on the west coast) - i didn't do a great 
packing job, and it arrived with a dent from a loose piece in the box; and 
he was [rightly] upset, but it was ok.  Or that could have been another 
dent, or something subsequent to my tenure.

need to move along; a set of difficult-to-obtain 29 x 2.25 "XC/CG"
*GUMWALL* knobbies, from Fairweather x Panaracer (Blue Lug).

Aye, Wally, I saw Hans is new in the Plus size. Nobby Nic is more an all round 
tire, perfect for allways bikepacking. I'm hoping it's similar to the Racing 
Ralph in that regard. Fortunately, the 2.8" only comes in one rubber option, so 
no rubberology degree required. Sardonic grin.

I had a butterscotch 62cm Saluki before, which I loved but parted with over a 
year ago. 

This new Saluki is definitely going to be a kid hauler and light tourer. I 
mainly use my lightning bolt for longer touring. The Saluki really completes my 
stable as of now. Being a comfy "cruiser" country bike.

MG, did it by chance have a dent in the downtube near the top water bottle cage 
bolt? If so, I owned that same frame. I believe I bought the f/f/h, cranks and

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

I think we can all agree that everyone is different and therefore saddles 
vary as to suitability.  I have  B17s and B68s on my various bikes and all 
are set up with alt bars and pretty upright riding position.  I'm perfectly 
fine with the B17 in that usage..  For the most part I don't have that 
painful period for breaking in unless I go longer miles on an outing.  Also 
agreed - for me - the Cambium is too rounded and makes for a very 
uncomfortable saddle.  I also enjoy the Berthoud Mente and the newer 
Albruis which both have the flat back portion.  For my folders I use the 
WTB Sports Comfort saddle and have had good results.

[RBW] Re: Any 90ish PBH folks riding a 52 Clem H?

I'm 6'5" with 97-ish PBH and ride a 65cm Clem H.  I'm at the low for pbh 
range of the 65cm and high for the 59cm and have very little standover 
clearance on my 65cm but once I'm on it I couldn't imagine wanting the 
smaller one for most of MY riding... which mostly involves non-technical 
multiuse paths/road.  I'm also somewhat biased from riding a too low MTB 
for most of my adult life (I'm 38 and rode only my early 90's rigid MTB 
from age 14 until my late 20's/early 30's.)  I had originally considered 
ordering that first 59cm Clem Prototype... that undecaled gold/tan 
powdercoated one they once listed, still can be seen in some parts pics on 
their site... and I know I'd likely have been just as happy riding the 59cm 
with more seatpost and stem extension but having ridden the 65cm the past 
two years I find I definitely like the bigger fit for most of my daily 
rides but if I had more local technical single track instead of all the 
gravel multiuse paths I'd probably consider going down to a 59cm 
for similar reasons and gaining the extra standover clearance.  I have a 
short single track detour in my local park system that I could handle with 
the 65cm but I've had to place a foot or bail out enough times to know I'd 
want something lower if riding the same terrain the majority of the time.

59cm and 65cm both share 29" wheelsize.  Your proposed change incorporates 
going from 29" to 27.5" wheels.  Not sure how much a difference that makes 
in the bigger picture with your fit/crank length/etc. or if that's also 
part of the appeal for you? 

Maybe also consider a Gus or 59cm Clem L?  Or maybe someone local to you 
will have a 52cm to test ride and compare them side by side?

[RBW] WTT my Shimano XT triple for your CX70 double

Like it says, I have a used Shimano XT triple front derailer which came on a 
build kit direct from Rivendell and I'd like the option to do a compact double 
build using a CX70 FD.  So, if you'd like to do a swap, I'd appreciate it.  If 
you want to buy my derailer that's cool too.  I was just checking the model on 
rivbike.com and they are out of stock but easily attainable elsewhere.  Thanks

Since you are leaning towards the Schwalbe side of things also consider the 
Hans Dampf.  It's now available in 27.5 x 2.35 / 2.6 / 2.8.  A PhD in 
Rubberology is required though to fully understand all the compounds 
Schwalbe uses.  OOOPS! I just re-read your post.  NNs on the way.  OK, 
perhaps consider the HD for next time ;)

I have them as DT shifters on both my Riv bikes.  I really like the feel of 
them. That said, DT bosses are located just where salty sweat drips on long 
summer rides and RBW did not provide a stainless internal ring. I did take mine 
apart, clean them and apply grease and they continue to function with no 
issues. I would buy again when needed.
