[RBW] Paul motolite reviews?

2019-05-15 Thread Drw
Spectacular brakes. Can’t say they stop significantly better than deore v’s,
but they definitely adjust and modulate better. Best brakes I’ve ever used in
setup and function. If I was rich and smart, I’d probably start stockpiling
them.

[RBW] PSA: Bikeinsights.com: great geometry resource

2019-05-15 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks,

Mentioned it in another thread but figured I’d replicate here for all and
sundry:

https://bikeinsights.com/ is a one-stop shop for geometry comparisons among a
staggering range of bikes and makers, including Riv. I’m not affiliated, but I
do occasionally ride with one of the founders (Dan/@hobocross). It’s saved me
from making several impulse purchases, but encouraged several others, so use at
your own risk...

[RBW] Re: Paul motolite reviews?

2019-05-15 Thread Chris L
I have a set on the front of my Hunqapillar and I basically view it as
"bling" for my bike. I can't tell that it stops any better than the Deore
V-brake it replaced, one of the bolts has to be tightened really tight to
keep the spring pressure from loosening it and it squeals loud enough to
wake the dead. I thought linear pull brakes don't need toe-in but I guess
this one does. I am using this with a Deore brake lever.

What I really want is mini-moto's (love the look) but I wasn't willing to
give up tire clearance so I bought the Motolite as a way to dip my foot
into the pond.

I am impressed by the quality of the parts and the ability to rebuild the
brake forever. They are light and I honestly thought parts of it were made
from plastic!

Knowing what I know now, would I buy it again, or will I buy another for
the rear? Maybe. I'm starting to think that wide profile cantilevers look
even better than the motolites.

Re: [RBW] Paul motolite reviews?

2019-05-15 Thread John McBurney
I’ve got motolites on my Bombadil and they are great. On my 650b bike with
Paul levers they are very strong and modulate well. They are very
adjustable including toe in. Because of the range of adjustment you can use
them on a variety wheels and bikes. It might be possible to run both 650b
and 700c wheels on some frames with this rim brake but please confirm that.

Plus they exude hand made quality.

My 2 cents

[RBW] Rides and activities for FotR / Rivmoot / RBWXXV Rivendell Anniversary Campout / Meetup

2019-05-15 Thread Philip Williamson
*Rivmoot 2019 is the weekend of July 19-21. *
I believe there is room for 30 people officially, and three cars. Justin
August can confirm nights, number of sites, and total possible guests.

Details (Everyone is invited!):
*Samuel P Taylor Park, at the Devil's Gulch Group Camps
. *That's in Marin County, California, in
the woods near both the coast and Mount Tam (cradle of mountain biking).
It's bikeable from SF and BART/Ferry/Bike-able from the East Bay.

I'm happy to lead a North Bay ride to/from SPT (Samuel P Taylor) by bike
and SMART train . I live in Santa Rosa,
but we can meet on the train.
We could convene at the Iron Horse Brewery in San Rafael to link up with
people from the next train, if necessary. Route is TBD: probably Mill
Valley / Mt Tam / Bo Ridge on the way in, and a deadhead run out Sir
Francis Drake on Sunday.

What riding would people like to do out there? I imagine there will be some
pretty epic loops, but also mellower tours of the cheese-making scene out
in West Marin. For Saturday, I probably want to ride something Joe Bunik
puts together. Can't get enough of those mines!

[RBW] Re: Roadini fendering at 32mm?

2019-05-15 Thread lconley
Exactly. Put the panhead bolt head or hex button head inside the fender and
the nut on the outside. If you have daruma style stays, buy a $5 L-bracket
from VO (or the sliding crimp fitting that comes standard with most metal
fenders and some plastic fenders, crimp it to the fender or cut it up to
make your own L-bracket) - mount one side to the fender and the other to
the daruma bolt (play with the orientation for best appearance. Can also
use pop rivets ($4 with coupon for rivet gun, $4.80 for 500 rivets with
coupon at Harbor Freight) to attach to fender for maximum clearance (use
the aluminum rivets and pound or press them flat). You can also get
aluminum angle at Lowes or Home Depot and make really nice aluminum
L-brackets with a hacksaw, file and drill. If you have a bench grinder, it
goes quicker. With a rat tail file, you can make a squiggly point an the
bracket to match your lugs. Boulder Bike used to sell nice L-brackets (may
have been Berthouds) , they still have some beautiful diamond shaped fender
reinforcements.

The most difficult thing that I am putting fenders on is a Hubbuhubbuh with
2.3 tires and linear brakes. The center stays at the rear have very little
side clearance and the linear brake cables are just above the tires. The
fenders will need to be cut or narrowed at the center stays and probably
cut (or possibly slotted) at the brake cables. Honjo H95s (I believe the
SimWorks are the same) are plenty wide enough. They are wide and use two
darumas - you just put the darumas to the outside of each side of the
fender to avoid the center of the tire, or I could use two L-brackets.

I am also putting H95s on my Bombadil - it has so much clearance to the 57
mm G-Ones that nothing special needs to be done.

The berthoud fender stays are very nice. They bolt directly to the fender and
you can put the small button head end on the inside. I’ve replaced the stock
stays on longboards with berthoud ones and I think it gives a stiffer result as
well as eliminating the internal hardware that some folks claim sends water
from inside the fender onto your feet. If I ever try metal fenders I’ll
probably want to use berthoud stays regardless of who makes the fenders.

Collin: How do you like the K-Lite? I have an earlier model -- 2016 IIRC,
with single lamp, 600 and 1,200 lumens claimed, and candybar-sized
capacitor+switching system that tucks nicely away in a frame bag.

I use it only on familiar dirt "acequia" irrigation roads in our bosque,
but even with my bad night vision it is very nice -- I do carry a battery
back up for those times when speed drops below, say, 8-10 mph.

Agree about blinding oncomers, but I do use mine largely, if not entirely,
on dirt roads and paths that after dark are not very much frequented.

Must look more closely at the Rocketgeist product line.

[RBW] Re: Roadini fendering at 32mm?

2019-05-15 Thread Paul G
Lots of good ideas here and from others. Yes, I was assuming stock supplied
hardware but obviously one does not have to use it. When using the stock
mounting hardware on some of the traditionally styled metal fenders, the
hardware itself is what can limit vertical clearance. Some modern metal
fender designs do seem to encroach upon the tire less.

Since the OP is referring to the Roadini, we assume a fender width limit of
about 45mm. The rolled edges of popular traditionally styled metal fenders,
combined with limited vertical clearance due to 57 mm reach caliper brakes,
can limit the width of the tire more than an SKS P45 Longboard. I have VO
45mm fenders on another bike. I haven't tried mounting them on the Roadeo,
but eyeballing them leads me to my conclusions. Maybe one day, I'll give it
a go just to see what I can get away with tire-wise. And if Iconley/Laing
is willing to share some more tricks, maybe we'll be surprised at what's
achievable.

Does the Roadeo have the same tire/fender clearance as the blue
Rambouillets? If so, I got 32-actual/35-labeled tires (Kojaks) under SKS
fenders without cutting things too fine. I daresay the right-sized Honjos

[RBW] Re: FS: 54.5 MIT AHH

2019-05-15 Thread phil k
Some people have asked if I could sell complete. I can sell everything but
wheels, saddle, and pedals. I can pack everything with my LBS so that you
will only have to get a wheel set, saddle, pedals, and some tire tubes.

Here is the rest of the build list, all in all, about $3,100 worth of parts
for $1900 plus bike flights shipping. I'll be getting my LBS to pack it.

-MIT AHH frameset, bottom bracket, headset, seatpost
-Nitto Albatross heat treated aluminum handlebars
-Nitto Tallux stem
-Gilles Berthoud leather bar wrap (can include leftover extra)
-Shimano brake levers
-Paul funky monkey front brake hanger
-Nitto Reneherse rinko rear cable hanger
-Paul Racer centermount pair
-Paul polished silver moon unit pair
-Panaracer Pasela folding bead (65bx42)
Riv Silver crankset wide low 38/24 170mm arms
-B IQ-XS dyno front light
-B toplight line small tail light
-B bracket for saddle rail for tail light
-Sehdon fender nuts (pair)
-Nitto lamp bracket right side
-XT Cassette 11-32 9 speed
-XT rear derailleur 772 9 speed
-Shimano front derailleur
-Nitto Marks Rack with extended struts
-Grey buckle strap to reinforce mark's rack to handlebars
-Wald medium basket
-Outer Shell Adventures basket bag in ranger green
-Ultegra bar ends
-SRAM chain

I went last year, lots of mud, lots of fun. My son has a fencing tournament
Sunday, so I must wait for August and D2R2 to get my gravel event fix.

[RBW] Re: FS: nitto rbw51 top rack

2019-05-15 Thread Tom Wyland
This is a Nitto R-14 rack. There's no better rack for an older saddlesack.
Particularly one with a slot for the tombstone. I've used one of these for
many years of commuting.

[RBW] Re: Fixed gear bike packing

2019-05-15 Thread Nick Payne
In about 1978, when I was living in Western Australia, a group of us who
were a bit over just training and racing organised a nine day 1400km cycle
camping tour. Two of the riders did it on fixed wheel - somewhere around a
65" gear as I recall. Luckily WA is not a particularly mountainous part of
the world, and as far as I can remember they managed the hills OK.

Hi Collin!
Wow! dried up mud :-)
Did you have problems shifting with all that mud on your front and rear
