2019-09-13 Thread Mark Roland
Also, on a 52 Clem you would be looking at the 650B offerings. The
Hurricane equivalent width would be Pumpkin Ridge, but if you want RH
knobby rubber on a Clem 52 I would go with Juniper:

https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/tires/650b/650b-x-48-juniper-ridge-tc/

Just be aware the knobs will wear rather quickly if you do much riding on
pavement with them, as the compound is fairly soft. Makes for a great
handling tire, but the rear center knobs will wear quickly on hard
surfaces.

2019-09-13 Thread Mark Roland
Is this a Gallop Poll?

Tigged bike designed around the Tektro 559, so you can switch from 700c to
650B
It will have 60 to 80cm chainstays. Mid tail.
It will be designed for handlebars, but not suspension. It will not have
disc brakes. Some people will wish it did.
It will be offered in two colors, and be super compatible with most current
and past basket designs.

I had a 51 Appaloosa which fit well, but I have a couple centimeters on you.
It's a tough call - even with the sizing recs on the Riv site - because you're
right on that edge between the two smallest sizes in every frame you've
mentioned. A lot depends on what bars you're using, a Bosco reaches wy back
and you need a longer toptube for it.

Thanks. On a related note, my next frame of interest is the Appaloosa,

I am not sure how much you can read into the name, but it implies a bike that
is fast and light. Maybe a single speed, although the market for those seems to
be shrinking. I could be wrong about that. Safe to say it will not be a
straight-up road bike, as the Roadini sold relatively slowly.

[RBW] Re: Clem L sizing

2019-09-13 Thread Ed Carolipio
I have a 45 Clem L with a 78 cm PBH. I don't have experience with the 52
Clem L but had a 51cm Appa that has a similar geometry and 650b wheels.

Compared to the Appa, the 45 Clem L definitely fits smallish (longer/taller
stem, seatpost pretty extended) and the chainstays are shorter so I had
issues with heel strike with a couple of racks. On the flip side, the 51cm
Appa was almost an ideal "riv" fit for me. For most riding, though,
variables other than frame/wheel size tend to dominate how the handling
felt. The only exception is at low speed while navigating narrow and tight
spaces in urban areas. In that case, I definitely prefer the 45 Clem L over
the Appa as I found it easier to execute maneuvers.

Andy, there are plenty of goatheads strewn among the lovely deserts and
mountains of Utah. The most insidious patch of them surrounds my bike
shed.

Thanks, Robert, for the heads-up on the Boise goathead festival. It looks
like a gas, and their website had a promising tip about picking up loose
nutlets with squares of carpet. I'll have to give that a try on the
decades of thorn buildup in my yard.

Glad you enjoyed Templin Robert. I'd hate to steer anyone to a bad beer
experience.  =)

Perhaps your Riv sightings mean we've coincided at Saltfire in the past,
although I never noticed a Tuxedo Sam when I was there. I'm up and about
post-crash, thanks for the well-wishes, but don't strain yours eyes looking
for my cornflower-blue 62 around town until next spring or summer. It
seems I won't be able to safely control an upright bike for awhile due to
obstreperous nerves in my arm. Such is life. You could try to look out
for me there as a person, but "bald, pudgy, bearded" tends to describe an
overwhelmingly large proportion of the patrons at any brewery (or non-racy
bike shop, for that matter), hindering identification.

2019-09-13 Thread 'Steven Seelig' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Max,

Since nobody else replied, I wanted you to know that you've inspired me to
check out this ride next year. The photos cinched it. I'd be doing it
most likely on my S coupled Spectrum Ti bike rather than a Riv, mostly
because I can pack it into a suitcase for airline travel. My Ram is an
option also, and although it has a triple chainring it is outfitted with
Albastache bars and I think (know) I'd want to do this with a drop bar.
There's also the notion that lotsa shifting is better done with a brifter.

So here's the big q: is this ride doable without a granny gear using my
compact double. If forced to ride out of the saddle for an extended period
I don't think that adds to a pleasant day.

Any advice based on what others on the trip were using?

Thanks, Howard! So a little over 160mm.

Too small for my panniers, unfortunately.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations on cycling to Rivendell and around San Francisco and the Bay Area

2019-09-13 Thread REC (Roberta)
Hi, Ana.

I had a great time on my trip, thanks to the recommendation of the good
folks here on one of your links above. There is so much to do, and you're
lucky you have more time. My time was limited to 2-1/2 days and one full
day. I'll be back though.

Cross the Golden Gate Bridge. I walked it, but if you ride it, you can go
farther. Loved the walk and the views, but it's quite windy. I also
visited the Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park (I think that was the
name). Very lovely. My most fun time was going on a bike tour of San
Francisco. I don't remember the company name, but you can ride your own
bike; I rented one. I was the only one signed up and they required a
minimum of two riders, so I paid for an invisible 2nd person and got a
private tour with an ex-history teacher as the ride leader. They know how
to zigzag around the really steep hills. Got to see lots of neighborhoods,
views and history of SF. I visited Rivendell. I did more, but I cannot
remember specifics. I wanted to do so much more, but didn't have the time.

Probably 30 years ago, I visited and went to Muir Woods and Chinatown.

If you're a museum person, be sure to find out the days they are closed.

I was without a bike. I stayed at a hotel in Oakland--Hilton?
Hampton Inn?-- (SO much less expensive than SF) and took the free city bus
to and from the train station each day and then trained into SF. However,
there are lots of bikes there, so you could ride your bike to the station,
if you're OK locking it there. I don't know the rules for bringing a bike
on the train. That line is really convenient and can take you to/from the
airport and to/from Rivendell.

Hope you have a great time and post some pics.

Well, a gallop is not a trot or a canter. I suspect something built with
speed in mind, Mongolian style.

Give a shout any time you’d like to try a ride. It need not be long. I’m in
the Montgomery area. You can ride one of the shorter options in our club
century next month! We also have a group putting on a gravel ride from 25 to
67 mile routes.

Hi Bruce,

That would have been good. I need to get in shape before taking on the longer
rides. I did 45 mi a couple weekends ago and heat was rough! Take care.
