[RBW] Re: RBW 25 -Atlantic side of things

2019-09-22 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I have been waiting for these posts! I have been living vicariously through
dear, sweet Roberta, who has been funneling pictures and texts and emails to me
so I can be included from exile here in Vegas (and I see Kai has been starting
rumors about me - definitely not true, but I do aspire to rise to them ! ).

You guys look great, your bikes look lovely and it’s true that it looks more
like a reunion than a meet. Riv people are the nicest people. Did anyone get to
ask Rachel about her rad daughter with the Tolkien-themed Atlantis? I’ve often
wondered how that pair is getting along; I’m sure they’ve had many adventures
by now.

Don’t be shy about posting your tales and photos here - we love them! So glad
you all had a wonderful time!

Joe - that's a good question and it will be interesting to see what the OP

According to Austin’s chart I have a good selection - a Noodle bar Roadini, a
Cheviot with Chocos and an Appaloosa that I have just put Bullmoose bars on. My
low end, can carry medium loads bike is an old Scott aluminum hybrid that I
rebuilt with a Velocity wheelset and Riv drivetrain for a much improved ride.
It is a 700c wheel bike, and I would prefer a 650b but Riv don’t have anything
that wouldn’t be too much of an overlap with my Cheviot at the moment.

I don't see a difference between core products and niche as it concerns frames
with Riv: They're too small for the whole thing to not be a niche. Within that
niche I perceive RBW bikes as analogous to Harley-Davidson, where you have a
base idea of what the bike should be, then build various iterations of this
theme over the years.

I'm not confused by Riv's bike models because I understand they're not intended
to be drastically different things.

[RBW] Google Groups Glitch - Admin Update

2019-09-22 Thread Jim Edgar
Hey there -

Just a heads up that for the past week or so, Google Groups was sending me
a minimum of 4 and sometimes upwards of a dozen copies for every potential
post to the moderation queue. That means if you are moderated, I found many
copies of your post. Wednesday morning, for example, there were north of 75
posts which seemed to be from only 5 or 6 attempts. It seems to have
lessened in the last couple days, so I'm hopeful the fine folks in Mountain
View have fixed this.

It was also generating them out of order - so I'd see a couple identical
ones, then a few from someone else, then one that _seemed_ like the one I
had read a moment ago. Which meant I had to jump over to the list to
confirm the earlier one had gone through before deleting the others. This
was fun for the first day, but got a bit overwhelming.

What I did: For the fortunate few whose posts didn't
double-treble-quadruple (or so) tap, I pushed those through if they were on
topic (meaning they were NOT sending contact information for a sale - those
should be messaged directly to the posting party, not to the list at
large). For most of them, they were deleted. (FWIW, it does seem that a
lot of newer/moderated list members are not direct messaging sellers of
items - there has been an increase in "...is this still for sale?" post
attempts.)

Which means: if you made an exceptionally salient post, and you don't see
it on the group threads, then you should try again. If you are trying to
coordinate a purchase from an individual, you should do that via direct
message with that person.

Thanks!

- Jim / list admin

Agreed on flashing lights. I only ever use them at low setting, on low

But at all but lowest setting they can be blinding and disorienting.

2019-09-22 Thread Austin B.
Fullylugged wrote: "They usually kill off their best sellers in order to
produce something more obscure that only the true faithful will find

This is where I find myself scratching my head. I don't work in the bike
industry, but I do work in product and have marketing experience. I have
long struggled to see how RBW segments their product lineup. To make sense
of it, this is how I segment their lineup in my own mind:

This only accounts for what they currently have on their frames page. It
excludes recent bikes like the Appaloosa, Hunqapillar & GBW (all are burly,
wide-tired, offroad touring frame and would be with the Atlantis on this
chart).

In the way I do the segmentation, a gap exists in lower priced mixed
terrain box. This used to be held by the Sam Hillborne before the AHH and
Atlantis went MIT, but now the Sam is at the same price point as the AHH.
So maybe the Gallop will fill this need? We'll see. Grant's no dummy and I
have to think they have a segmentation strategy--I just am not seeing it.
And with so many products that have a lifespan of just a couple years, it
seems (as Fullylugged suggests) that they have bikes which are "more
obscure that only the true faithful will find desirable."

I don't have any familiarity with product development costs in the bike
industry, but have to think there are significant expenses w/r/t
prototyping and setting up production. It seems they do it way more often
than is necessary. I'd really like to see RBW hang on another 25 years--but
given their recent financial struggles, maybe they should focus on the core
products for awhile and move away from the niche ones.

They don't help you see, and they disorient the rest of us.

In fact, please don't mount blinding strobe lights to your bicycle, either.

more obscure that only the true faithful will find desireable. I have always
