[RBW] Re: eClem again

2019-10-18 Thread Joe Bernard
Hi Ian,

Yes, it's the most "bicycle like" of all the systems I've messed with, and I've
messed with a bunch. The motor, controller and battery are all in the hub so
there's no hassle with finding places to mount things, and no wires ziptied to
the frame. You power on with a switch on the wheel, then the assist levels are
managed on a phone app.

It's torque-sensing so the harder you pedal, the more "tailwind" it gives you.
One cool feature with this is you can slow right down to a crawl on a very
sharp turn - like in a park or parking lot - then press the pedal and the power
picks right back up to get you out of it. I've ridden cadence systems where
this wasn't possible, if the pedals were moving you had power trying to jet you
forward..there's no fighting the motor with the Copenhagen Wheel. Top speed is
25mph for the US market, which is about as fast as I want to go on a Clem. It
may be 25kph for Canada, I don't know the ebike laws there.

Range is limited due to the small battery required to fit in the casing. I can
get around 30 miles if I stay out of full power (Turbo) and don't jam the
pedals all day; easily dropping down to 10 for Turbo blasts. It's an urban A to
B system, you won't be doing any touring unless you ride long stretches with O
power. I'm going to try 50-miler at some point, though, just to see if I can
realistically do one. It pedals fine in O, just heavy..I'll bet with some
judicious running in 0 and Eco and coasting down hills I could pull it off.

Another feature - which is exclusive to this wheel - is it supposedly "learns"
how you ride and adapts the system to you. In practice this benefit is
invisible, but I love the way everything works so maybe that's part of it.

The one major drawback is the same as all hub drive ebikes: pulling that heavy
bolt-on wheel for a flat is not going to be fun out on the road. I use a thick
Schwalbe tire and hope for the best! 爛

[RBW] Re: eClem again

2019-10-18 Thread Ian A
Looking good, Joe, especially properly dressed with fenders. I am curious about
the Copenhagen wheel. From what I understand it is entirely self-contained, app
controlled and pedal assist only. Seems like almost the perfect electric
bicycle solution. It remains a bicycle, albeit a bionic version.

If you could expand on the way the hub works and feels in practical day to day
riding, it would be interesting to learn more. What sort of range does it allow?

[RBW] Re: Seeking Advice: Best Tires for Non-Ideal Rims

2019-10-18 Thread tc
I'm running Nano 2.1 tires on Synergy rims (64 Atlantis) with no issues.
It really depends on the tread profile. If creating a rounder tire profile
(fat tire on smallish rim) will cause the particular tread transition (from
tire center to side) to be more abrupt, you may not like that. If the
tread is uniform from center to side, then likely no issues. At one time I
ran 2.4 Mezcals on Alexrims DM24 rims -- the std rim Riv put's on complete
Clem's. They have a 24mm inner width. Loved them. Mezcals don't have an
abrupt change in tread pattern, so maybe give it a whirl. If it doesn't
feel right, then spend the cash for Cliffhangers :-)

[RBW] Re: Tires for Clementine

2019-10-18 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
It’s been a long saga, but I finally have news to report.

I got a smokin’ deal on Schwalbe Big Ben tires (2 in?) in 650b for my
Clementine. They are a UK company, so of course shipping was going to take
awhile. At some point, the tires were lost by the carrier and I was working
with the company to figure out next steps. Meanwhile, one fine morning I
made it all but a half mile to school and BOOM BOOM BOOM!!! Stopped my bike
immediately and saw that the rear tire was pancake flat. I made an
instagram video about that as I pushed my bike 1.5 miles uphill in my
nursing scrubs. I don’t know why I thought that was funny. You should see
the blisters I still have on my heels.

I’m Two-Bike Leah these days, so I decided to take the Clementine to the
shop and give them a laundry list of small issues I’d identified, as well
as to have them get new tires for it. We all marveled at how dirty the bike
was, and T (shop owner) agreed that the black on my pants could definitely
be the brake pads. I brought Kool Stop brake pads for installation, because
we had decided somewhere on this List that the brake pads were maybe to
blame. Plus, what does it hurt to get new brake pads? I needed some tuning
for the derailleurs and then the new tires and one new tube. The shop owner
had tires in mind and I left him to it. Take my money, I’d said. I’d ride
the Betz in the meantime.

Meanwhile, my lost tires appeared and the shop’s were late in arriving. He
decided to put my Big Bens on my bike instead and asked me to bring them
by. I came to pick up the Clementine today and T told me that he really
thinks the black dust all over me and the wheels were from those old brake
pads. He said they were disintegrating (or something) and that there was
metal and erosion in them (or something). He really thinks I’m going to be
pleased with these new pads.

I did a test ride around the block and I honestly cannot believe how much
better the bike feels on new tires and with new brakes. Just wow. I wish I
had known sooner. It’s like butter now, whereas my old Kendas always felt a
little like going through mud. I have dark wash jeans on today, so no
telling about the brake dust, but I’ll certainly be back here whining about
it if it starts up again. Carl! Thanks for messaging me about the Kool
Stops!

What really was the icing on the cake was that T took it upon himself to
clean up my filthy, filthy wheels and the multi-colored spoke ends all show
up in bright color again. I was so pleased about how the bike came out and
as I was leaving one mechanic said, “Your bike always moves to the front of
the line when you bring it in. I think you get special treatment here.”

“My bike is serious class,” I said, winking.

And it is.
Leah

PS Thank you so very much for helping me figure out this mess!

Tom, sigh, I can just imagine. It’s hard to watch your son grow, but also
pleasing to know he’s becoming a good man. I’m sure those “15 minutes with Dad”

Thanks for your compliments on the Betty - she *is* a looker, and it can’t be

to that lovely Betz. Not that the Clementine isn’t also pretty, but she’s more
a big-boned, no-nonsense gal who you see as more attractive once you get to

But that anniversary bike (in the red color I’ve decided it would be though no
one in charge has agreed to) would be nice to have too...

2019-10-18 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello Justin-

I’ll be leading a Three Speed Ride on Saturday:
https://societyofthreespeeds.wordpress.com/2019/10/15/reminder-the-seattle-three-speed-ride-is-saturday-october-19/
Please note that all bikes are welcome on this ride, three speed or not. Word
on the street that a rider with a Riv that is purple shall be there...
Oh yeah, hope you brought your rain gear!

Best,
Shawn who is normally in PDX but is in Seattle this weekend as well.

[RBW] Seatte rides this weekend?

2019-10-18 Thread Justin Wyne
Howdy

I'll be in Seattle this weekend for a short stay till Monday and was
wondering if there's any bicycle kinda things happening? Or, does anybody
have suggestions for casual fun rides? I'm still debating bringing a bike,
the folks I'm staying with have bikes but aren't really dedicated rider so
I'd want to keep it comfortable for them if I'm dragging them out. What's
your favorite Seattle bike shop/spot?

thanks
Justin

[RBW] WTB: One Grey Backabike

2019-10-18 Thread Joe Bernard
I know it's an odd request, but I already have one non-grid grey Backabike I'm
trying to at least sorta matchy-matchy. I sold an early version of this bag
once so if you're ready to sell it back, I'll take it! But really any grey -
grid or non - will do.

Thanks,
Joe Bernard

Re: [RBW] Seeking Advice: Best Tires for Non-Ideal Rims

2019-10-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Back in the day both Trek and Sun (at least those 2) made 13 mm internal/19
external mountain bike rims. I used both with 2" tires for thousands of
miles with no problem except having to keep pressure higher than (I would
now consider) optimum.

Wider rims work better for wider tires, but skinny rims work alright.
