Re: [RBW] Craigslist score -- 59cm Roadeo

2020-07-02 Thread Patrick Moore
I forget what other Rivendell you own, but the Roadeo was designed with
light tubing and road geometry to compete with the carbon fiber crowd, so I
would not be surprised if the difference is in the frame. My new Riv
replacement (thinnish wall, narrow gauge tubing, lighter frame) feels
faster than the custom Rivendell it is modeled on, this last one built of,
as I decide in retrospect, too-stout tubing.

Of course, wheels and tires can make a huge difference too.

Hi, Brady,

I do put lubes on the cables when I install them new. For the specific

cable end (the knob) and then pull the cable snug.

I do have some spare shifters, will PM you to see if you would like to buy

Re: [RBW] Want a San Marcos!

2020-07-02 Thread Joel Stern
Thanks Ash, actually I like the Appaloosa a lot but the sizing may be a tad
off from what Riv told me although a member on this forum has said the
standover was 30 5/8 which could work for me. What size did you get and how
do you find the standover? I am on a Bleriot at the moment, had sold a load
of Rivs due to a car accident 10 years ago, sold 6 about 5 or 6 years ago,
a custom, an AR and another Bleriot I was going to bring to Brasil. I am
back on the bike now after 10 years that the Bleriot is good but a tad high
TT for me although Grant would think it is fine. I don't like feeling to TT
as much as I do when I stand over the bike but I can live with it. I like
the longer chainstay idea of your bike, hope you love it. From what I
have learned the new Atlantis may be a good fit for me but I just don't
bond with the color when I look at the pictures. Are you happy with the MIT
bike? My Bleriot has some issues, not really issues but some of the braze
ons are not in exactly the right place, my rear rack had to come off as it
was pushing on the rear brake, really not a big deal as I don't really
carry anything.

Thanks much

[RBW] More fun on the new Matthews Road Bike for Road (sorry, no new photos yet)

2020-07-02 Thread Patrick Moore
20 miles. I was tired from poor sleep, and it was close to 100*F outside my
door instead of the low 90s promised, so I lollygagged. But how much easier
lollygagging is with even 3 gears, a tiny range, and a freewheel, compared
to a single 70" or 76" gear! I bumped up the gearing by replacing the 19 t
cog with an 18 for 74", 66", 57" instead of 70", 63", 54"; I run out of
gear a bit less easily with tailwinds now, and I can still sit and climb
short or shallow hills in 2nd.

But how easy it feels to actually sit and climb! No big hills today, but
some small ones that usually have me standing and honking halfway up. Good
thing, too, because I felt beat for the whole ride. But it's nice to have a
road bike that permits just cruising around; the Matthews Road Bike for
Dirt has many gears and rolls very well, but it's too heavy (31.4 lb with
frame bag and contents) to feel *as* easy up hills. This new bike is 24.98
lb with rear rack but no saddle wedge, and I think it's about 1 lb lighter
than the 2003 Curt Goodrich Riv.

And this may just be new bike enthusiasm, but the new bike seems easier to
pedal than the 2003 Riv; at least, the slightly higher gear didn't make me
bog down the way I anticipated, and I don't notice any drag from the
"slushbox." Compared to the 2003 Curt made from stout oversized tubing (7
lb f + f + hs), the new bike is normal gauge .8 .5 .8 531; can this be
planing? (Tho' the 1999 Joe Starck feels as lively as this bike, tho' it is
made from some oversized tubing; but lighter and less beefy than the 2003.)

More and better photos to come; too tired right now, and have a client call
coming up.

Aside: Near disaster this morning. Chauncey sinned by not greasing the
fender strut bolts. I sinned by not greasing them when I fiddled with the
the other day, and by torquing them back in firmly. When I went to remove
the right front fender strut bolt this morning, the head broke off, and I
was left with a stub sticking out ~2 mm on the inside and ~1mm on the
outside. Ow gawd! But (thank God!) I restrained my impatience and slowly,
slowly worked the stub back and forth from the inside with a pair of Vise
Grips and liberal infusions of WD40, and after 20+ minutes I worked it
through to the inside. Whew! The boss threads were fine, and anew, heavily
greased bolt went in smoothly.

Photos of the new bike, and of the 2003 Curt for sale, to come shortly.

[RBW] Bar End Shifter Woes

2020-07-02 Thread Brady Smith
I was out riding with the kid today when my rear derailleur abruptly dropped
all the way to the bottom cog. I stopped, undid the corresponding bar end
shifter (a Gran Compe EnE from Velo Orange), wiped some gunk off and put it
back together. It worked for a little while but soon gave out again and I wound
up holding the shifter in place to make it up the climbs on the way home. After
taking it apart, cleaning everything, and reassembling the shifter, the ratchet
mechanism inside the shifter simply won't engage (I've made the bike usable in
the meantime by adding a rubber washer to the assembly, which I did once before
when it turned out I had a defective Riv Silver shifter on another bike). The
shifter was pretty gunked up with sweat before this happened. A couple
questions:

1. Is it possible that sweat got into the ratchet mechanism and caused it to
fail? Seems unlikely, but I am a notoriously sweaty guy.

2. The cable attached to this shifter was not that old (6 months?) but on the
verge of being corroded into the lever. A moot point, since it seems like I'll
need to replace the whole shifter, but how do fellow bar-end users prevent
sweat from ruining these things? Should I be greasing the cable end to keep it
from corroding into the shifter? Is there a type of lube that works best to get
sweat out of the washer assembly?

Any advice is appreciated. In the grand scheme of things, a bar end shifter is
far cheaper and easier to replace than an STI lever, but it seems like I'm
harder on these things than I should be.

-Brady

Yep, frame size and design flexibility. One lug to rule them all.
Aesthetically I do prefer the classic seat stay capped and brazed to the
side of the seat lug design, but I like the new lug just fine too.

In addition to the advantages Ryan mentions, I suppose another advantage of
the ball-and-socket lug is that it allows Grant to use the same lug on
different bikes and to tweak the rear end on existing models, all without
having to design and pay for a new lug each time.

I don't like the looks of the ball and socket lug either, I think it looks

if I am right about the flexibility it affords, then I can't argue with the

[RBW] Re: Ball In Socket Seat Tube Lug

2020-07-02 Thread ted
I think the main advantage of the RBW ball and socket seat lug is that it
works for most any seat stay to seat tube angle, so one casting works for
all sizes.
Aesthetics are always in the eye of the beholder. Personally I like the
looks of the new lug fine. Of course others may not.
Another beneficial feature of the new lug is that the stays will trap the
handle end of a frame pump nicely. On my FJ Sr. I put a topeak frame pump
along the back side of the seat tube with one end on the left side chain
stay and the other tucked between the seat stays at the seat lug. Nice.

[RBW] Back on a Bleriot

2020-07-02 Thread Colin Cummings
Hey all,

I recently acquired aNOTHER 59 Bleriot frame (my third, first destroyed in
a wreck, second stolen) and am building it up, the question is how. I've
ridden this frame with drop bars, moustache, and Albatross; with an
XtraCycle extension; hauling kids in a trailer; commuted; and all around
loved it in various iterations. But I have no idea how to build it now.

I've been on a 90s era Stumpjumper with VO Porteur bars, which makes for a
tight, upright cockpit, and I'm cruising on Schwalbe Big Bens (60mm I
think?), so it's a slow, ponderous thing. I'm contemplating a "faster"
build of the Bleriot, but for the foreseeable future it will just be a

Here's what it says on their web site:
http://00eda5d.netsolhost.com/ordering.html

How To Order
Our preferred method of receiving orders is via e-mail. Faxed or
mailed orders are fine too, but are significantly slower in
processing. We accept PayPal to gpvb1 (at) comcast (dot) net, and
payment by check or Money Order. Also, we can invoice you (and you can
pay) via PayPal, even if you don't have a PayPal account. Ask us about
that option

  * *e-Mail*
gpvb1(at)comcast(dot)net
We answer all non-spam e-mails, except valuation requests! If you
don't get a response from us, you must have some sort of
spamblocker or other filter that needs adjusting!!!

  * *Mail* (very slow!)
After contacting us to confirm that the desired items are
available, and the total cost with shipping, send check, or money
order to:

  * *Bicycle Classics LLC*
2724 N. Overland Trail #1468
Laporte, CO 80535

Shipping Policy

  o *In-Stock Items* generally ship in 1 - 3 business days

o *Most shipping is done via U.S. Postal Service.*Shipping to a
USA or APO/FPO address is 9.00 per order. USA parts orders
over $150.00 ship free, however. For oversized, or Foreign
orders, or other large or heavy items such as rims, wheels,
frames, frame tubing, books, or bikes, please inquire. We
recommend placing orders that are 25.00 or more to make the
most out of the shipping cost, but there is no minimum order
amount.

Return Policy
Within 30 days of receipt you may return any unused item in the exact
condition it was received for cash/PayPal refund (depending on how you
paid, and shipping charges are not refundable). You may also choose
store credit. No returns are permitted after 30 days.

Note that refunds on purchases will be charged a 20% restocking fee to
cover the costs we incurred for the order.

*Note also:* If you return an item because we either shipped the wrong
item or it is defective, then we will adjust the policy so that you
don't pay for our blunder. Conversely, if you order the wrong part and
it's your mistake, or you simply "don't like/want the item" we regret
that we can't adjust the policy.

/*Disclaimer*/*/!/* /*Danger, Will Robinson!!!*/
Use all items at your own risk. Many items, including NOS unused
vintage ones, are best for display only. Use of any item we sell is at
the sole risk of the purchaser. If you're uncomfortable with using
anything that you purchase from us for any reason, return it unused
and unmarked for a refund within 14 days (from time of receipt). It is
the purchaser's responsibility to inspect all items regularly, even
modern items, to determine whether they are safe to use or better left
for display. Lightweight rims, old cranks (/like me! - Ed./), tubular
tires, handlebars, pedals, and stems can be especially risky to use.
Our lawyer made us say this.

Thanks, Julian. Others have pointed to this.

I should have noted that my stays (Kelpie) are 6.5mm thick versus the
standard (IIRC) 5 mm, which in practice is quite a bit fatter. Any idea if

Good luck! Fun project.

I’m eager to give the Billie Bar a try, but it’s out of stock. Does anyone have

[RBW] Re: WTB: Front Rack for Wald Basket

2020-07-02 Thread Raymond Henderson
I just finished building up what I'm calling a budget-Riv for my partner,
and I used a Velo Orange Constructeur rack that I picked up cheaply on
fleabay with a Wald basket there. I really like the way it looks, and it
seems to work great. I can post pictures tomorrow if that would be helpful.

Hello Brendon,

Your report is so interesting. Glad to know and see that you are well.

Of particular interest is the trailer hitch on your car. Having never seen
this type in the States, could you shed some light? Is the hitch also meant
to support a bike rack?

[RBW] Re: Ball In Socket Seat Tube Lug

2020-07-02 Thread Ryan M.
https://rivbike.tumblr.com/post/173252562647/note-this-unearthed-blug-was-supposed-to-appear

Here is a Blug post that has pictures of the Riv. ball and socket seat tube
lug.

" The ball-and-socket seat stay joint eliminates sheer forces and adds
strength. The main shoreline of the seat lug is familiarly Rivendell, the
same-ish swirls and all, and like all Rivendell seat lugs, it has other
obsessive details that — well, if you’re going to make it from scratch,
might as well be there— "

I have an Appaloosa with the older non-ball and socket lug and just picked
up a Frank Jones with the new ball and socket lug and have to say I really
dig the new style. It looks nice and has some extra "cream" windows in the
lug that the other one doesn't have. I think it is visually appealing and
if had to choose between the two I would go with the lug that the Frank
Jones has. Not that there is anything wrong with the lug on the Appaloosa,
but the Frank is just a bit fancier looking.

2020-07-02 Thread Nick Payne
I like the way that Llewellyn does his socketed seat lugs, but others that
I've seen - including the Rivendell ones - leave me cold. About 20 years
back I was thinking of buying a Heron frame, but in the end I didn't
because it used that design of seat lug.

These is the Llewellyn seat lug (centre):

And how it looks in a finished frame:

The black and white is a nice alternative to the usual (and some very nice
