[RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-15 Thread dstein
FWIW I bought a Hunqapillar around 2013 or so and Brian (former Riv
mechanic) steered me to the Albastache bars which are fairly aggressive. I
was concerned about it being to aggressive but with a short stem and a high
position it felt natural and I like it. I played around with a few
different bars after that but went back to Albastache ultimately. I sold
the bike in 2016 or so though.

I haven't weighed it. It has a light "let's just go a ride" feel, but is also
very stable. I don't weigh it down with a large saddlebag like my Mt Fuji. So I
have to bring a back pack for shopping. Back packs don't count as part of the
bike weight, right?

[RBW] Re: A different Mustache/Albastache set-up?

2020-07-15 Thread Dave Johnston
I have seen pictures of the reverse style levers stuck in the ends of the
bar but it looks awkward, but doesn't take up had real estate.

The drop portion isn't as long as an Albatross so it might be cramped with
a lever clamped on, but the new Albastache does have more room than the old
Moustache.

Velo orange makes a lever compatible with both road (23.8mm) and with shims
for MTB/city sized (22.2mm) handlebars.
https://velo-orange.com/collections/brake-levers/products/grand-cru-brake-levers

You could also use interrupter levers, by themselves if you find the kind
where the cable end sits nicely where the housing usually goes.
https://velo-orange.com/collections/brake-levers/products/tektro-rl720-cross-levers-all-silver

Or you can get a similar effect with a Billie bar and a longer stem.

You are definitely correct about the geo changing over, but this particular one

great with a 90mm stem and bars about even with the saddle (as shown about 28"
from center of bb to top of saddle)."

Re: [RBW] Re: 56cm Atlantis on 650b google groups

2020-07-15 Thread Drw
Ian,
I’m pretty sure it’s the same. 650b 56cm waterfords were only offered for like
6 months max. Prior To that they were 26” or 700c (For 58 and up). In those 6
ish months the frame geometry was very similar to the old version but for
chainstays which were only about 15mm more than the previous version. After
that they were/are made in Taiwan with much different geometry.

This was a strange time when atlanti, hunqapillars and homers briefly moved to
being semi custom Waterford orders. Before MIT versions were introduced. And
kind of simultaneous to the Appaloosa release.

the prices I paid - but they were much less than current Nitto two-bolt

[RBW] A different Mustache/Albastache set-up?

2020-07-15 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
When I see a Mustache or Albastache bar installed it almost always has
drop-bar brake levers installed sideways at the bends and is completely
wrapped like a drop bar. When I see an Albatross or other typical upright
bar installed it almost almost always has the city-type brake levers
installed in a typical orientation toward the ends of the bar and has some
type of grip but is bare other than that.

I don't recall ever seeing a Mustache or Albastache bar set up like an
Albatross bar, with city brake levers and grips installed in typical
upright-bar fashion. Is anyone aware of a reason that wouldn't work well?
I'm tempted to try it but thought I'd ask here first in case there's a
reason that I simply don't see. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: 56cm Atlantis on 650b google groups

2020-07-15 Thread Drw
I’ll also say that the 650b Atlantis is absolutely spectacular. I’m so glad I
got one in the brief window when geometry was semi-traditional, but still
halfway long. I also have a 56cm toyo Atlantis (soon for sale) and I’ve had a
hunq and a Sam. The newer Atlantis pulled all my favorite parts of those bikes
into one thing. 2200 is a steal. I think my frame cost almost that.

[RBW] Re: anyone know how to figure out Tire Radius/rim radius?

2020-07-15 Thread Jason Fuller
I go with this simple formula, which may not be exactly right but it's
close I think, and good for comparing one size to another.

26" = 559mm
650B = 584mm
700c = 622mm

Tire outside diameter = rim diameter + (2 x tire diameter)

ie 650b x 42 would be 584 + 42 + 42 = 668mm -> your radius is therefore
half that, 334mm

I think this is accurate enough for whomever's asking, but if you have the
bike with the wheels and you can just measure, just measure ground to the
top of the tire and divide by two

MIke,

I'm feeling your pain. I've had quite the collection of fairends caps over
the years. Probably my most sweat stained was my Rivendell cap that flew
off my head while going over a bridge. Seeing that they went out of
business bums me out so much. Lucklily they come up on ebay and depop

2020-07-15 Thread Jim S.
John, I just use a strip length-wise under the grip. You could try one on
the top and one on the bottom, if one strip alone isn't tight enough. I
can't figure out why, but the length of the strip matters. A longer strip
seems to hold it in place more than a shorter one, but I"ve had it where if
I make the strip too long, I can't get the grip on to the bar. So there's a
sweet spot.

[RBW] Looking for hat recommendation similar to Fair Ends cap

2020-07-15 Thread MikeS
Hello folks-

Does anyone know of a cotton cap similar in fit and styling to the Fair Ends
caps formerly offered from Rivendell?

I purchased a waxed cotton cap directly from Fair Ends last autumn and find it
fits my big melon better than any other cap I’ve ever tried. I also liked that
they were MUSA and just seemed like a cool company that I’d like to patronize.
I subsequently bought a couple wool tweed versions over the winter, including
one just as the virus was closing the country down. Fair Ends sent out an
email at the time saying they were closing due to the shutdown, were
liquidating their remaining stock, and hoped to reopen when possible.

As the weather has turned, I find that I’d love a similar cap in a lighter
cotton fabric. Unfortunately their website https://fairends.com is now down. I
have emailed the last customer service address I have but alas have heard
nothing back and fear the worst.

So does anyone have a recommendation for a light cotton cap that might fit like
the Fair Ends? Preferably made by a US-based progressive company run by actual
humans rather than some faceless international conglomerate? Or, for that
matter, a gently used Fair Ends cap?

Cheers- Mike in Somerville, MA

[RBW] Re: XO-1 or Roadini

2020-07-15 Thread EGNolan
I've got a Handsome XOXO, a tigged re-make of the XO-1. I also have a
Roadini. I love both bikes and it would be a hard choice to have one, but
I'd go Roadini. It's a refined bike, and will give you many more years of
enjoyment.

[RBW] For Sale Redwood 1500

2020-07-15 Thread bo richardson
I am helping a friend sell her Redwood. Her brother bought it and then found a
68 Atlantis frame
and built that up and sold the Redwood to his sister Kim. She upgraded the bike
quite a bit, including a fresh drivetrain
including shifters, Then she found a Rambouillet 66,root beer color and bought
that.

The Redwood is a very nice bicycle and needs to be paroled from the dark
crowded garage.
Paint is naybe9/10. included is a dark green Brooks and the pedals.
Lots of Nitto
check out the ad on craigslist Bellingham/ Seattle.
If those photos interest you enough I can email better ones.
Kim wants1500$ including everything, as it sits.
my phone is dead, but my email works.
thanks for your interest

2020-07-15 Thread George Schick
Thanks for the info, gents, but I seem recall doing a search for this
sometime in the past and finding very little. So, to make sure I wasn't
just talking through my hat, I got out the calipers and re-measured the one
that's on there now. Turns out that I was (talking through my hat, that
is). It measures 26.5mm. It's not the original post, but one that fits -
it came off an old Schwinn. That means a 26.6 would probably work, but
those are the cheap ones, mainly single bolt that are out there in the
market. I'd measure the original post, but I lost track of it. I recall
that it had some strange Greek lettering on it. But I suspect that .1mm
either way would've fit.

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Adhesive for Riv Cork Grips???

2020-07-15 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Jim,

Are you using one strip of Newbaum's on the handlebar length-wise
under the grip, or wrapping a strip of Newbaum's around the bar under the
grip?

If I could get cork grips to work without glue, that would be fantastic.

Thanks,

Ann,

I think the bolt fix you did a year ago is keen! Thank you for posting about
this. If I have to do a seat post bolt repair in the wild I will know to look
for a high grade bolt. Sorry yours only worked for a year, glad to hear you
were not hurt.

A B67 has all kinds of leverage from three sides and built in kinetic spring
energy. Add in some poor luck and I can see how this might end up with a bolt
sheering off.

Hi Ann,

If you need to replace the seat post, I'd recommend checking out
Velo-Orange's long set-back post, seen here
.

It's a 2-bolt design so you don't need to crank it down, it has a set-back
that's suitable for Brooks saddles, and it's reasonably priced.

While this is also pretty expensive for what it is, it's still cheaper than
a rack, or you could DIY something similar for a few bucks less.

I'm using one now on a Carradice Camper Long Flap that I modded with 3
leather, essentially, belt loops to the bottom for the horizontal rod to

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Adhesive for Riv Cork Grips???

2020-07-15 Thread Jim S.
John, I've had success with a strip of newbaum's tape. No glue, no nothing
else. If you don't have enough tape, they'll rotate. If you use too much
tape, you can't get the grips on. But you'll figure out an amount that
holds the grips in place. Then you can remove the grips later without
needing a blow torch.

[RBW] Re: XO-1 or Roadini

2020-07-15 Thread Ryan M.
I'd get the Roadini. I like the looks of the roadini and the price is
pretty good too. The tig welding does not bother me over the lugs, even
though I personally would pony up cash for lugs.

Or I would be looking hard at the A Homer Hilsen too. I kinda like the
looks of the Homer better and it's a bit more versatile of a
bike...meaning, you can take it on chunkier gravel stuff with larger tires.

I will say this, I had a Roadeo and felt that bike rode great and can only
imagine the Roadini, being a Riv road bike, will handle great too.

[RBW] Re: Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-15 Thread ascpgh
5" packaging stretch wrap on a handle.
https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/444327/Office-Depot-Brand-Stretch-Wrap-Film/

I got one of these (mine from Home Depot) for something around here and I
use it for more ways than they could put in the packaging. It's just the
thing for wrapping headsets to prevent highway speed lube blowout/rain
washout, the junction of seatpost to seat tube, saddles to create a
protective cover that won't flutter/fail if you finish it off with nicely
applied piece of packing tape. You can also wrap potential points along the
frame or parts that my rub or be touched others. Not helicopter tape, but
comes off. A little scissors cut (Those Swiss Army Knives) at the edge and
the whole thickness of many wrapped layers can be removed at once.

Also used it to bind stacks of old hardwood flooring curated for later use,
keeping parts of furniture together for transport, as an overwrap to keep a
balm on a foot/ankle instead of soaking into a sock/shoe and to hold a big
gauze on a cleaned and covered abrasion that no self-adhesive equivalent
will fit or stay on longer than five minutes.

The worst "in-transit" beausage I've seen was wheel related (you are
thankfully free from the horror of these with your rack). A wheel's rim
braking surface gouged deeply by a pedal was one. Can't fix that other than
sanding it smooth as functionally possible so the brake pad can pass over
it without grabbing and making a loud "thonk" while still moving. The
other was a spot-fried until blown out tire of the bike nearest the
exhaust. Not a proximity noticed when loading since most vehicles are
discrete about their exhaust pipes. Then you're going down the road and
hear a gunshot-like sound. You don't immediately see the scorched part of
tire when you stop to look, but that one is flat and wonder how. When the
other side facing the exhaust is discovered, then you immediately know what
happened and that you'll need a new tire and tube.

[RBW] Re: Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-15 Thread Mark Roland
All these good ideas on how to protect the bikes when being transported on
the rack. And I guess if you are only doing it a couple times a year, it's
okay. But otherwise, it's like packing the bike up for shipping, about my
least favorite activity involving bicycles. You also need to figure out
what to do with all the noodles, and put together a kit to hold tape,
knife, zip ties, etc. to do it all again for return trips.

My experience has been that the most damage occurs with movement==often
handlebars, brake levers, gear shifters rubbing against paint. Make sure
these things are out of range of painted tubes so when they inevitably
move, they don't do damage. And definitely make sure the movement will be
as minimal as possible. If using noodles, maybe one on the top tube of
every other bicycle would do the trick, depending on how the bikes are held
in--I'm not familiar with the big industrial hitch rack designs.
