[RBW] Advice on odor removal from B-17 please

2020-08-27 Thread John P. in SF
Apologies for cross-posting, to SFR members

I recently purchased a fine used Brooks B-17 saddle from a 'friend' and
have been enjoying it.

However.

I found myself checking my personal glandular areas for odor when near my
bike pile, thinking that perhaps I have eaten something or took a shirt or
pair of boxers from the wrong pile that day. After a few confirming sniffs
I looked elsewhere and easily found the offending source, my newly acquired
B-17.

Any tips for odor removal from the newbies or anciennes?

Thanks in advance,

John P in SF, who thought he smelled a bargain and got more than he wanted.

[RBW] Re: Clem L arrived, couple of thoughts and questions

2020-08-27 Thread Fullylugged

Hey Kurt!

Nice looking bike! I suggested it to a local rider who needed an upright
posture. She loves hers. She started out last Fall at 10 - 12 mph avg, but
now is around 16 on club rides with it. A one point this morning, she was
pulling our pace line at 18. So the bike isn't that slow. (This bike has
the Conti basketball tires and cliffhanger rim wheels) All that to say that
your wife can expect to ride about as quick or slow as she wants, in
comfort, and looking good.

Re: [RBW] Re: Good wishes for those on list affected by CA wildfires

2020-08-27 Thread Patrick Moore
I've responded with some asperity -- "roughness" -- to a couple of posts
raised by others querying why this lists gets so exercised about what might
be considered minor matters when there are much weightier matters being
debated in the electronic *agora.*

While I don't apologize for my answers, I do think it is right to say this:

Injustice, racial or otherwise, is a far, far more serious matter even than
smoke from unprecedented wildfires.

What the white settlers of North America did over 300 years to captured
African blacks and their descendants is in the aggregate at least as bad as
what was done to the Indians of the Americas (90% kill off) and to the Jews
of the Holocaust. There has always been racism -- and other prejudices --
throughout history, but that of WASP Americans to African Americans was
particularly horrible by its fear and it's malice. I am just old enough to
remember when visiting my grandmother in early 1960s Georgia "colored only"
drinking fountains and signs advertising Ku Klux Klan rallies on Stone
Mountain.

I was fortunate to grow up from 1968 to 1974, 13 to 19, in Kenya as child
of a pure WASP father -- so white that he made any white man on this list
look like a Sicilian, no offense to Sicilians, who are as God made them;
"white" as such is* not* a criterion of excellence. He grew up ins the Deep
South during Jim Crow and was smart enough to leave after High School; he
married a Filipina in 1954. No, my mother wasn't a maid; she came over on a
Fulbright Scholarship; the University of the Philippines was grooming her
to be Dean of the School of Library Sciences, and the Librarian of the
Library of Congress said to her after hearing a speech of hers, "Look me up
if you are ever in the US and need a job."

Ideological evils and ideological reactions swing back and forth
continuously as they have throughout history; the oppression of one people
by another people is millennia old, whether the peoples differ by race or
religion or nationality or economic class or what have you. The material
domination of western Europeans over non-European peoples is a mere blip in
the timeline of history and will very soon pass; the first Englishmen to
travel to Mughal India were fascinated rather than contemptuous of native
culture and adopted it; the early nabobs got rich by imitating the locals,
not suppressing them. It was only the pseudo-Darwinist racialist ideologies
of the Victorian era that generated British contempt for the *babu.* Cetshwayo
didn't ask permission of the other tribes he disenfranchised of their
ancestral homelands; the Han Chinese oppressed the Tibetans and now turn
their attention to the Uyghurs; the Leninists oppressed the peasants who
managed to scrape enough together to buy a couple of cows; the Nationalists
in Spain oppressed the Catholic clergy; the Falange oppressed anyone with
Socialist relatives.

Point: Nothing is new, and nothing you or I do will have anything more than
a transitory effect, except one thing: reform yourself. Gandhi helped drive
the Raj from India because of his interior greatness (Mahatma = great soul)
while the Jacobins turned *liberte egalite fraternite* into a bloodbath,
and the Leninists "reformed" corrupt Tsarist Russia by establishing an even
more brutal tyranny that only petered out from sordid internal
self-contradiction, cynicism, and psychological exhaustion after 70 years.

St. John of the Cross said in response to someone who prodded him about
reforming society*, speaking of those who were not interiorly reformed:
"Sometimes they achieve a little more than nothing, sometimes they achieve
nothing, sometimes they achieve less than nothing." *Nemo dat quod non
habet.* No one gives what he doesn't have. If we ourselves are not
internally reformed, why should we expect to have any effect on the world
around us?

* This reminds me of the response of Sri Ramakrishna to someone who told
him that he had no time for spiritual discipline because he needed to
reform the world:
"Do you think that the world is such a small thing that you can reform it?"

[RBW] Re: friction mode on silver shifters and shimano down tube dura ace shifters slip!

2020-08-27 Thread tuolumne bikes
Are you absolutely sure the cable is slipping? Does it always move in the
same direction? (Gets harder to pedal for traditional rear derailleur.)
Never happens in index mode? Skipping on worn cogs with a newer chain can
seem like a shifting problem especially if it's on the larger cogs and
you're pedaling hard uphill. If the cassette is oldish, replacing it can
narrow down the possibilities.

[RBW] Re: Albatross/bar ends...what grips

2020-08-27 Thread Ray
I actually just did this yesterday with some ESI grips on my Albatross
bars. I was re-cabling my bike so I didn't have bar-end shifters installed
that I was working around, but I found the process much easier than I
anticipated. I used glass cleaner instead of hand sanitizer. I've also
heard that hairspray works well. I just put the cabling in the ESI grip and
slipped them both on together. I used a bit more cabling than I needed so I
could cut the extra at the bar-end. If you try to pull from the other size
to get it even, it slips through rather easily, and you'll have to start
over (this got me twice).

The air had been smokey for a couple of days with a "warning" in force
until mid-day yesterday. Today was fine.

Fire near Santa Fe, and smoke from Phoenix; dammit, Phoenix, keep your

[RBW] Re: Clem L arrived, couple of thoughts and questions

2020-08-27 Thread Jeremy Till
I'd agree that the twitchyness was from riding too small a bike. I'm taller
than you and have a first generation 59cm Clem H and find it to be one of
the most planted (but still nimble) bikes I've ridden; that being said the
front end geometry has changed slightly in the most recent generations.

My thought with the the multiple rack mounts is probably that the dropouts
are a standard item, not specific to Clems, that come with rack mounts cast
in, but Rivendell also wanted to include a more forward rack mounting
location that allows you to take more advantage of the long stays and have
the weight on the rack more centered within the wheelbase of the bike,
instead of hanging off the back (see also: "longtail" cargo bikes). Thus
they added the mounts on the stays. At that point you do have more
braze-ons than needed but there's no point in having the factory cut off
the extra ones, and you could use them for creative uses (light mounts?).

Wheels such as this are generally built at a factory by a machine. I think
they just load the nipple hopper with multiple colors when they build these
ones.

I think joe posted the initial preview of it. Search the list under new
Cheviot, or maybe fancy cheviot (?) , something like that. (It is the

since i don't mind the consequences, i'm sensing a double standard here.
posts from jan re: BLM have nothing to do with this group, but this post
about air quality in the bay area does.

don't get me wrong, i see nothing wrong with either, but you can't use the
swift hand of moderation on one claiming it has no place but just let this
fly free. or you can, cause this is your google group, but a double
standard is a double standard. there isn't even a mention of rivendell
bikes here.

If you are thinking of cork grips, then Riv has them pre-slotted:
https://www.rivbike.com/products/mieshas-portuguese-tree-cork-grips-pair-grooved-and-punched-for-barend-shifters

It's been awhile but I think I simply bought cork grips and slotted them
myself, for a little bit of a deeper groove to keep the cable out of the
way.

So I've decided to part with my Appaloosa. I have been thinking about this
for a long time and I find my self riding my other bikes more, it's a shame
this bike just sits in the garage. Plus I want to get a new MTB so I'm
selling two bikes(this one and a 1991 GT Karakoram, not really appropriate
for the list but send me a message if interested).

About the bike.

Frame & fork: 58cm Joe Appaloosa with the beautiful double top tubes AND
disc brake tabs added by Walt Works. The missing paint around the tabs has
been clear coated over. Paint has a few scratches here and there, nothing
major, just honest use.

Headset: FSA, the one that comes with the Rivendells, honestly kind of a
cheap headset. I have a new Tange I'll include as well. Can even swap it if
you like.

Stem: Crust/Nitto, 31.8mm, 75mm, silver

Handlebars: Crust/Nitto Shaka bars, silver

Bar Tape: Blackburn, white

Brake levers/Shifters: Campy Centaur 10 speed ergopower levers, swapped
lever blades for Athena(says 11 speed but they are not really 11 speed,
just 10 speed with 11 speed levers, looks cooler!)

Brakes: Paul Klampers, campy pull, black with orange knobs, Paul brake
adapters. Avid Clean Sweep G2 160mm Rotors

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore RD-M591, black,(yes, this bike is a
campy/shimano mix, works great!)

Front Derailleur: Shimano Deore XT Triple

Cassette: Sram 9 speed, 11-34

Chain: Sram 951

Cranks: Shimano Deore FC-MT60, silver, 175mm, 110/74 bcd, 46t/30t(46
mounted in the middle position, 30 in the small ring position)

Bottom Bracket: Shimano UN55 68 x 118mm

Pedals: Speedplay Drillium! Black

Hubs: Profile Racing Elite 6 bolt disc, 32h, black, QR, HG 11 speed road
freehub body, Shimano XT skewers. I'll also include the end caps and
hardware to convert hubs to bolt on.

Rims: Sun Ringle Rhyno Lites, 32h, black with machined sidewalls

Spokes/nipples, DT Swiss Competition, black, DT Swiss silver brass nipples

Tires: Continental Race King 29 x 2.0, currently set up tubeless with
Orange Seal

Seat Post: Thomson Elite, silver. I'll include the Nitto post as well.

Saddle: Soma Hishou, black

Front rack: Nitto Mark's Rack, silver with Wald 137 Basket zip-tied to it
of course!

Fenders: Planet Bike Cascadia 29 x 65mm, Black

Cables and Housing: Cables are Campy, shift housing is Shimano, brake
housing is Jagwire compressionless. I'll include two extra brake and shift
cables from Jagwire also.

$2500 is my price. Local pick up in Portland OR would be great but I am
willing to ship. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks,
Eric Swain

On the silver shifter I have a Shimano xt rear derailleur and on the dura

it to the point it takes effort to shift so, looks like this could be frame
flex/Rd shifter combo/ need of adjustible locktight..

Max - definitely up for a ride when things calm down. There's an Atlantis

Thank you Patrick and others. This has been a tough week. Air Quality has
mostly been good in our neck of the woods, but drops in the evening as the
wind shifts here north of SF and the smoke starts to lay into our area.
We've seen >200 a few times via Purple Air, and there's not much to do but
hang inside and keep everything closed. I've had a sore throat all week.

A friend texted me images from his place near the LNU Complex fire. He had
been lost everything but the stuff he had in his truck.

I used to really like late summer and early fall, but now, it's a definite
time of stress.

Be safe everyone.
