[RBW] WTB: 20" front wheel for Crust Cargo fork

2020-09-03 Thread J Imler
I pulled the trigger on a Crust Clydesdale fork. I'd been close each of the
last several batch releases. I'm looking for a 20" wheel to complete the
new front end. The fork will be adjoining an electrified Appaloosa double
TT frame for maximum child carrying shenanigans. Leads to quality
purchasing options are welcome also.

A recent Instagram post with a Clem/Clydesdale fork camper build here:

Thanks!

My 51cm Sidepull Samwise is PERFECT for my 80 PBH and 5’9” height,
especially when set up with Albatross bars. Best fitting bike I’ve ever

Hi Joel,
Nice Atlantis build.
By the way, did you get the 650b or 26" version of your 50 Atlantis?
I could not guess based on the pictures :-)

2020-09-03 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Totally! The braze ons are crazy. including the 3 sets of bottle bosses,
there are 22 attachment points! I really liked having the two main triangle
bottles and the under down tube one. Never thought I'd have need for three
bottles of water...now I can't imagine doing without!

Wherever that picture was taken is PERFECT Atlantis territory. That peak in
the back is calling!

Re: [RBW] Re: First ride, Atlantis

2020-09-03 Thread Joel Stern
Thanks Roberta. The Atlantis is very nice, different for me as I missed
when Riv started with the longer chainstays. I wanted an Appaloosa but the
standover is slightly more and I went with fit, same with Homer vs. Sam,
the Sam May be a tad better fit, it may be similar to my Bleriot but fit
better but I am not sure I want to part with the Bleriot and 2 bikes is
enough for me.

My knee is now 2 years but it has been slow to heal up, still have
stiffness but riding has given me my thighs and calves back, that made my
wife happy. I know that riding has made the knee better, talked to the doc
about it yesterday on the 2 year visit. Everyone heals differently and I
will do about anything to avoid getting the left one done, not any fun for
me.

Thanks for your feedback,

Joel

[RBW] Has anyone ridden the Platypus demo bike that can offer an opinion?

2020-09-03 Thread Roberta
Not that I need another bike (I have Joe Appaloosa for home and A. Homer
Hilsen for office rides), but I'd love to get a mixte for my retirement
bike, which is actually years away. But I love the look of the Platypus
with its glorious sweeping lines, so am considering it now. Especially if
it comes in RWB blue!

We all know how popular bikes are getting and how quickly Rivendell
pre-sells its frames. So, I (and I'm sure many of you) are considering
jumping on the pre-sale website for the Platypus as soon as it's up. That
means I (we) need to do research now.

Has anyone taken the sample bike on a long enough ride to describe the
feel? Did you find it stiff (I found the Cheviot stiff compared to the
other Riv's) or lively (my AHH is lively) or solid, dependable and dreamy
(my Joe A and the Atlantis). Or, something else? Or, did a miss a
discussion on this already (I've been working a lot)?

Yours in knowledge-seeking and enabling,
Roberta

The first ride was interesting, I had to stop a few times to make
tweaks. So this will be the last time I use this mechanic. First he
wasn’t sure how to wrap the bars, ok, I can do that, and probably better as
I may move the levers a bit. The brake pads were rubbing and I had him
loosen the fit a bit, ok, that can happen. About 1/2 mile from home I
stopped to check something and the rear break sounded like an elephant,
that has worked itself out pretty much but the front still is loud. The
bars, they were not tightened enough and that almost caused a problem with
that first stop. The pics won’t reflect where the bars are set now but
higher than in the outside pic of the bike alone, I was wondering why my
 hands were hurting.

The ride is very different than the Bleriot, a bit more sure footed,
not twitchy at all. Feels slower but he bike is different and the tires
are 48’s vs. 42’s. The bike fit is very good, longer stem than the
Bleriot, longer TT, I am actually surprised that it did not feel much
longer. I could hold the bars at the ends which is too upright for me on
 the Bleriot.

It felt like I was working harder, my legs told me that but I think
part of that was the many tweaks I had to stop and do.

I won’t ride for one or more days as I will be getting a Coolief
treatment on my left knee tomorrow morning, like Radio Frequency Ablation
but a bit cooler process. I do not want another TKR.

So tonight I may wrap the bars now that I know the squeaky brakes will
work themselves out and I will not be changing them, and the stem length
seems good, and put a rear rack on.

More to come I am sure.

Shimano clamp-on MTB FDs all come with a 34.9mm clamp and two sets of shims

Re: [RBW] Re: First ride, Atlantis

2020-09-03 Thread Roberta
I'm so glad your first Atlantis ride was a positive one for you and the
bike, but not for your now ex-mechanic. The very first Riv I tried was an
Atlantis and it was such an "OMG" experience. It is an awesome bike and
and I hope you get lots of miles from it and your new knee. Love it with
the saddle color and matching XS saddle sack.

My Joe A. rides similar to your Atlantis. I did test a Sam and as I
recall, it rode different enough to notice. I would say that the Joe A
and the one time I rode the Atlantis felt more like Leah's Clem H and Clem
L than it did to the Sam. I know you're looking for a second bike, and I
have the feeling the Sam will fit what you're looking for and will make a
nice compliment to your Atlantis.

Thanks Joel. I love Acorn's stuff & have one of their early rando bags.
Great construction. But their smallest saddlebag was a bit larger than I
wanted, so the Sackville may be just the way to go. The measurements help
a lot. I'll dig into it.

Joel,  it's a great looking machine!
It looks like one of you're tweaks was moving the ends of the bar up from the
downward tilt.
What bar tape will you use?
I'm still tweaking my Sam.
I expect those tires absorb up the bumps very well.
Did you go with Standard,  Endurance  or Extralight?
I too really like that rear bag.
Are you going to add a build list to the thread?

Congrats and enjoy!

Paul in Dallas

2020-09-03 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
OK...I remounted wheels and got out the string and level.

This IS a 54.5cm frame. Accounting for the slope, the effective TT is 56.
Actual TT 54.5 c-c. Seat tube 53 c-c / 54.5 c-t

2020-09-03 Thread Joe Bernard
I believe there was a 650B Waterford Atlantis for a very short time before
Riv stopped production then did the MIT frame, but most Waterfords will be
26" or 700C.

Your frame looks like a 54.5 to me, my guess is you need to level your tape
out get a true TT number. The actual tube will measure less.

2020-09-03 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Huh. According to the geo chart I linked, there is only 26" listed for the
54.5cm frame? But I happened to notice some other conflicting info on there
too, so lets clarify:

26" Wheels on this one

Physical measurements of THIS frame:
54.5cm Top tube measured center to center
54.5cm center to top

Could we argue this is a 53??
I understood Rivendell sizing was listed as the seat tube center to top? Is
this wrong??

The measurements of this frame feel very "ish" compared to that chart after
closer inspection.

2020-09-03 Thread Joel Stern
I like the Sam H a lot, if I do decide to sell the Bleriot I would want a
Sam because from all I have gathered it would be a great fit in 51cm for
me. The Homer May be a tad taller from I information I have gathered from
a forum member. Also, nice to have one with a shorter chainstays as well.

All great bikes though.

Curious if anyone knows the max comfy tire size for a Canti-Rom. (700c)
The non-canti version takes 38's according to the original brochure.

Re: [RBW] Re: First ride, Atlantis

2020-09-03 Thread Joel Stern
Doug, thanks. The bag is what was called the Kevin bag years ago. I sold
a new one some years back on the forum. I think the Sackville small bag is
basically the same. I don’t know how many liters but it is smaller than
the Acorn small bag.

https://www.rivbike.com/collections/bags/products/sackville-saddlesack-xsmall-olive-20130

The measurements are a bit different but close. Mine is 7W x 4.5 D X 4 1/4
H
That is without stuffing, you can push it a bit.

Re: [RBW] Re: First ride, Atlantis

2020-09-03 Thread Joel Stern
Thanks Jason. I’m not in a hurry but I do like to go for rides where it is
not casual, if you know what I mean. I just did a ton of measurements. I
was spoiled as my old bike guy had all my numbers written down and my
tweaking was always minimal. I gave this guy, a nice guy, mu seat height,
how high I like the bars over the saddle, He even measured where the brake
lever were placed on the albatross on the Bleriot. All were off. Now it
really is my fault, I should have checked before I rode, so now I have the
saddle and bar height correct and only minor tweaking will be needed.

I was really surprised by how much the bar sloped vs the Bleriot, but in a
few rides I should have it nailed down.

The steering is slower, or less sensitive, what I wanted, so that pleases
me.

I believe in a few more rides I will have it dialed in.

Re: [RBW] Sellers, post your full emails

2020-09-03 Thread J L
This IS a topic that comes up frequently and it has me looking at my own use
case. I am an email exclusive user and here are some thoughts on why that is.

I came to this group as an extension of another group that used to function as
a listserv. I have just kept up with that email to post format.

I use a mail client, a program that collects and sorts my email from multiple
email addresses. To read and send email I launch the program and do what I need
to do. That is to say I do not get email by directing a web browser to
www.yahoo or www.gmail or whatever. I imagine that if I did read email on a web
browser there are only a few more steps to access google groups (with a gmail
address), as I do not, it seems like very many steps.

I have more than one email address. I bet I have more than a score of email
addresses. Not only does my mail client sort mail in many ways, I also have
several accounts that I can interact with or ignore as I see fit. I can imagine
a few reasons that others may not want multiple addresses (even work and
personal) and there is some learning and time involved in setting up a mail
client.

IMHO the culture of this list is one of active discussion topics. A topic
typically lasts a few days to a few weeks. Others have expressed an interest in
search and browse functions when framing google groups as a forum. I check the
group emails every few days and read or share my opinion. If I miss a topic I
don’t mind so much because it is likely the group has moved on so to speak. I
can certainly imagine someone new to the group being excited about old and new
topics equally. A forum style interface allows for access to that that wider
array of posts.

2020-09-03 Thread Joe Bernard
Yes, I interact with this group the way Garth does..been that way from the
beginning at bikelist . org and internet-bob since 2000. Now I can't even
post on my Android, I have to use a tablet and that one won't send PMs. If
they want me outta here completely, we're almost there.

2020-09-03 Thread Garth
I too like Erik in Philly have all email notifications off except personal
messages. What I view I view here online, I have no interest in bunches of
emails.

For clarity, when I reply here on this topic , it is available for all
members to see here on this publicly viewed website and for member that
accepts group messages to their personal inbox. When I wish to reply to a
single member , for whatever the reason, it is with the intent of a
one-on-one personal conversation, not a public/group conversation. No other
member is involved.

I have my personal emails in a window in a monitor separate from where most of
my “work” happens. I glance over once in a while to see if anything looks
interesting.

As I recall, you can opt to receive one email a day or one per week(?) Downside
there is you’ll miss that sweet deal that somebody offered.

What Erik said, I tried the email version for a short while years ago and
hated it. What's going to happen is if the web version becomes impossible
to work with, I'll just not be on Google Groups anymore.

having the stouter tubes of the two. I have mine built up pretty
lightweight (for what it is), it's around 27 lbs with accessories but no
bags. I came off a very light tubing bike, the Soma Grand Rando, and the
Hillborne doesn't feel much slower to be honest, if at all! It's
definitely smoother, which is surprising given the stronger tubing. I think
the geo just puts me in the perfect place between the wheels.

I do long distance road rides on the Hillborne and while it might do me
well to have a bit of a lighter tubed bike in those cases, it's really nice
to be able to also strap a bunch of weight to the same bike (or ride rough
roads and trails) without worry! I do these rides with people on full road
bikes sometimes and I don't feel the bike holds me back more than maybe
3%.

Re: [RBW] Sellers, post your full emails

2020-09-03 Thread Erik Wright
I just don't want my inbox blown up with every response to every thread,
even if it's filtered to a separate RBW Bunch folder or something like
that. I enjoy the interface of clicking through threads as I please in
addition to reading threads in a descending order and having the thread
confined to one space- things come across clearer to me that way, rather
than sorta getting my emails mixed up / out of order. In fact one of the
first things I did when I joined the group was turn off email notifications
entirely, other than PMs.

It's not a huge deal, and if Google Groups stuff doesn't get sorted then
maybe I will move to emails, I just also read emails all damn day at work
and appreciate the respite. Not the end of the world, I just prefer the web
interface. That said, maybe I just don't use email filters correctly.

[RBW] Re: First ride, Atlantis

2020-09-03 Thread Jason Fuller
I don't doubt it feels quite a bit slower! But I bet it will ride so much
better with a load than the Bleriot. I'm amazed just how much slower my
Clem is vs. my Hillborne. It's a huge difference, well beyond tires, and
honestly it's kind of surprising. I imagine the Atlantis is closer to the
Clem than the Hillborne. Certainly made to achieve different goals though.
That build is gorgeous looking and looks like a great all-rounder as long
as you're not in too much of a hurry.

Re: [RBW] Sellers, post your full emails

2020-09-03 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
To All:

Taking a quick break from my work-at-home activities to express a bit of
puzzlement. I’ve been on this list for years, and for years I’ve seen messages
about people who try to respond to the person who posted a message but couldn’t
for some reason. I *think* this is all based on issues in the online version of
Google Groups, right?

You all know that you can get all of this stuff sent to you in you email inbox,
yes? You get an email that is the same as the post on Google Groups, which
comes with the email of the sender/poster in it. Then you use your email
program to compose a message back. Quick and easy. I’ve done it this way since
… forever.

Am I missing something? Are these people philosophically averse to using email?
You don’t *have* email? You only want to interact with the RBW Group online?

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. It’s just that the same problem comes
up over and over and over again, and the solution is so easy.

OK, back to work for me.

Thanks, Steve, I appreciate it!

Steve is correct about the make/model. It's a fancy saddle, sure to turn
heads.

Also: I should say that while I do not post on the group often, I am a
subscriber and always enjoy reading the posts. This little corner of the
bicycle internet is a sweet space even if it includes my brother-- another
occasional poster named Andrew Nussbaum-- who is guilty for getting me to
spend more than I should on bikes. I haven't bought a Riv yet, but he's
working on me.

Thanks for looking, all.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Atlantis 54.5 Frame/Fork + partial build - $1400

2020-09-03 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
This is the first of a consolidation needed on my part. The perfect
specimen of a Waterford made Riv Atlantis.

I've had a few Riv's and this one is BY FAR my favorite. It was the most
versatile, best riding, fitting, and looking. But if you're here...you know
these things.

>From what I know, the 54.5 Atlantisii are not terribly common. Where the 56
was a bit stretchy and tall, this one felt like it put the bike right where
I needed it for off road play. This is the more classic Riv geometry akin
to the first AllRounder, not the long chainstay current offerings.

GEOMETRY LINK

Please take note of the cosmetic condition. I can only describe it as
immaculately beausaged. If you're a hand wringer over paint chips and
surface rustrun...do not walk. Just look away. YES, there are chips and
scratches. No dents or damage. Could it be touched up or repainted...sure,
but I feel it would be a bit of a disservice to the history of this
beautiful beast. It's a proper tool that's been used correctly, and taken
care of. It will continue to do it's job given the same care. Frame and all
the parts are super clean.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs A. Homer Hilsen

2020-09-03 Thread Joel Stern
Dorothy, I did see that, I could take almost every part from the Bleriot
and use them on the Homer but on the Sam I would need new brakes. Not a
big deal but I do like those side pulls.

[RBW] Re: 3 Rivendells

2020-09-03 Thread Joel
Roberta, as I noted above the Bleriot is livelier than I really want. I
will get to ride my new Atlantis in about an hour or so, it is being
brought here by the bike shop as it is a mobile repair and build shop. He
took the Atlantis to his place so he could spend evenings doing it.

I am sure that the Atlantis will be the tamest of the bikes I have owned
from Rivendell and there have been quite a few. Now that I do not use drops
anymore it becomes more important to have a less lively ride due my back
and other body parts. I guess after I ride the Atlantis I will have a
b\tter idea but I wonder how different a Sam or Homer will be vs. the
Bleriot. The Sam being a tad less than the Atlantis is not a bad things
although if the Homer is the same as the 50cm Atlantis that is good too.

Thanks again

Joel

I just replied to Joel's other thread and I think this is exactly what I

[RBW] Re: 3 Rivendells

2020-09-03 Thread Joel
Collin, I did see they are sold out. From what Rich said in another thread
he weight them as having a 2 pound difference, not an issue for me, I am
not worried about the weight, I do a pretty minimal build, no fenders,
maybe a rear rack. They are very close but not the same as to the tubing
and chain stays, my initial thoughts were that the Sam might be a bit more
stable but maybe not even measurable.

Thanks Erik, I looked at the geometry charts as well. I was also given some

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs A. Homer Hilsen

2020-09-03 Thread Erik Wright
A couple notes after watching Russ's review at Path Less Pedaled, too:

   1. He notes 45.5cm chainstays. He rides the 650b version, which (according
   to this geometry chart
   )
could mean that the geo of the new batch of Sams might not be much of a
diversion from the last batch. 700c has 46.5cm chainstays.
  1. Unless, of course, he reviewed a Sam from the last batch that
  Riv still had in stock.
   2. According to that same geo chart, A. Homer Hilsen has 47.5cm
chainstays in the 650b sizes, and up to 49cm and 53cm in the big ol' sizes.

Therefore, chainstay length + brake choice + tubing(???) might make the two
bikes a smidge more different than each other. Basically going from 95% the
same bike to 90% the same bike.

That's the nerdiest I've gotten about bikes in a while.

Love it! Nail polished or painted lug work, with the "it's OK to use nail

[RBW] Re: 3 Rivendells

2020-09-03 Thread Roberta
Joel has heard from me, but for those reading this thread...

I rode a Sam and an Appaloosa 3 1/2 years ago and choose the Appaloosa. I
liked the Sam, but LOVED the ride of the Appaloosa. Last year I bought an
AHH because I needed a bike for my office location and the more I ride it,
the more I love it.

It's been 3 1/2 years since my impression of the Sam, but I feel that the
AHH is livelier. That impression could be because of my lack of "bike
knowledge" at the time I rode the Sam, time between rides, or the fact that
I'm riding the AHH a lot recently. Perhaps if I ride a Sam tomorrow, I'd
feel different.

Or, it could be the sizing. 51 Sam felt too small and the 55 was too big.
The 51 Appaloosa is just a bit bigger than the 51 Sam, and the AHH 54.5 is
"just right." Well, perhaps I'd like a sightly lower top tube, but I like
the overall bigness of the bike.

I ride nearly 100% on road and MUPs, but sometimes those MUPS become packed
dirt or boardwalk planks. I don't ride any real gravel or mountain or
single track.

83 cm PBH.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs A. Homer Hilsen

2020-09-03 Thread R Shannon
Joel,

I’ve not verified this with the Riv folks but the weight difference between the
two seems like it would be in the tubing. My Homer and Sam have identical
setups but Homer is two pounds lighter (says a bathroom scale). It also feels a
touch lighter just lifting it and ditto for the ride.

>From the last Riv catalog:
“Sam is a hair stouter, so we give it more burly points than Homer, but the Sam
and Homer are 95 percent functional clones. . .”

Also this: “If you want speed on the road with versatility to tour or ride dirt
now and then, the A. Homer Hilsen is ideal.”

Hope this info helps with your decision. Pics or any other questions feel free
to ask.

[RBW] Re: 3 Rivendells

2020-09-03 Thread Collin A
I occasionally ride my Partner's MIT homer (47.5, too small for me) on my
commute, so I cannot comment on it thoroughly, but it is a lively bike as
it compares to my (now sold) Clem and would be an excellent companion to
the Atlantis. The liveliness you describe for your bleriot with alba bars
matches with what I have noticed with the billie bars that are on there. I
think that is mostly a function of where your hands are relative to the
steering axis.

The main functional difference appears to be a smaller seatpost diam for
the Sam and v-studs/canti-posts. The geometries based on bikeinsights seem
almost identical.

The paint on the Homer is a wonderful color, btw. Its a beautiful blue with
just a hint of sparkle that you only see during sunny days.

Also, looks like Riv is sold out of the 51 homers, if that impacts your
decision at all.

Cheers,
Collin in "GOOD AQI" Sacramento

Hi,

This first-generation Heron Road was designed by Grant Petersen in the
late 1990s, built by Waterford Precision Cycles, and sold by Rivendell

impeccable condition as are all the parts, since I put only 280
dry-weather miles on the odometer since its recent build with new parts.

For now, though, what do I love best about this bike? Takes wider
tires than many road bikes, and it's balanced, elegant, and much fun
to ride. Parts highlights include Velocity wheels bought from
Rivendell and the ever-lovely Sugino Alpina silver cranks.

At *$950*, I believe this is a really good deal. Note the price does
not include the saddle, pedals, and accessories. Detailed geometry and
parts info below. Please read the NOTES below, too. Note as well that
I cannot ship the bike right now, so the price is for pickup here in
northern Westchester or I'll deliver your purchase within a 25-mile
(or so) distance from my home.

[RBW] Re: New Frame Day - Rivendell Mixte "Cargo" bike

2020-09-03 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Super cool. You're putting a rear rack on it? I wonder how it would feel
with a heavy load up front and in back? I put some ridiculously heavy loads
on the front of my "mixtes" (one having been Marty's in the past!) avoiding
the addition of rear loads for fear of frame waggle and what that might
mean for structural longevity. I'm curious how the twin tubes do in that
regard. Seems, as they are outboard of the center line that they'd do much
better than a centered single tube. One thing's for absolutely sure, they
look stunning!
Enjoy it
-Kai

This is one to watch! Really interesting one-of-one frame. Cool factor X11!

I guess I am guilty of the same faux pas. My heavy duty build was not
completed until well into 2020, but the frame is from the 2019 batch.

I hope E comes to realize how COOL that blue is. I think it's my favorite
Clem color, and that Select almost-honey-now saddle looks great on it.
That's a nice bike!
