purchasing a set of index 10 speed Dura Ace downtube shifters if anyone's
holding.

[RBW] Re: Advice on Onyx Hubs

2020-09-29 Thread Philip Williamson
Funny, I just ordered a 135 QR Vesper for rim brakes. The Vesper is the
only 135 rim brake option, according to the person I talked to on the
phone. That option is not on their website, which stumped me for years. I
just told them today, "Take it off the secret menu and put it on the
website, so Rivendell riders can buy them."

I don't imagine the Vesper gives anything up in durability, since Peter
Verdone buys them for his mountain bikes, and if he broke one the whole
world would know. I like the looks of the classic ones a little more, but
the Vesper isn't any weirder looking than a SON Wide Body. I chose Onyx
over any other hub, because I want the quiet running and the high
engagement. I rode one a little bit, and liked it a lot. It's unique.

"No, the bike will be ridden half to death."

You've got some riding to do then. So far, the half-life of a Rivendell is
still an open question. If you keep buying new ones, you'll never know.
Steel is real.

No, this bike is mine. The production colors will be new colors - I bet you’ll

Are you still with me? Get ready to be delighted! I have wanted a new

It’s Grant, with my new Platypus in his arms. Everything about this photo

No, the bike will be ridden half to death. I won’t be precious about it,

colorful wheelsets and dyno systems for me, and the accent colors we chose
are rose and teal. (If you only have 2 bikes, you get to splurge on the
builds. See photo for wheel/dyno selection.) Rivendell will do the rest of
the build, and I am really looking forward to this because I haven’t ever
chosen the parts for a complete bike build before. My last *new* Rivendell

 the parts this week.

The mixtes are the best bikes Rivendell makes, and they have outdone
themselves with this beauty. It’s regal, like a ballroom gown, and made
better because it’s not just a pretty face. It may appear as a
contradiction, because it is exquisite, yes, but not at the expense of
function. It is smart. Capable. Beautiful. Useful. This is the DNA of a

I hope this beautiful bike brightens your day a little bit, and stokes

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus: First Look

2020-09-29 Thread Roberta
That color is the most wonderful color I've seen since your
water/aqua/silvery/blue Clementine bike color, which is now the former best
color ever for a bike color. And, with rose colored rims--ooh, la, la
And, the graceful lines--so sophisticated yet soft looking. If at least
one of the other colors is half as nice as the "it can't be red" color, I
will be first in line for it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-09-29 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Bob

1st Ave and Hennessey appears to be be the Shore Casino with plenty of
parking and hopefully restrooms. It seems like a good Start/Finish point.
This would be the 20/25M loop out to Sandy Hook

Driving seems to be GSP to NJ36 near Matawan and then NJ36 to AH and 1st
Ave. There don't appear to be direct roads if you stay on the GSP further
east and then come north to AH. Is this correct or are there better
routes?

Only problem would be the NYC folks coming by train to reach the Start.
Would the HHT be the best way for them to come from Matawan or are there
better choices if they stay on the train past Matawan and get off at
another station?? They could go down to Long Branch for the return trip.

Guys, guys. Manners, please. It's not polite to ask a step through its
weight. Anyway, not part of the job description. Mine is lighter than
almost any "electric bicycle" aka moped.

Wow. That is gorgeous. Is it red? If that is the frame color, your wheelset
will look killer.I would send you my raspberry Brooks, but my Susie arrived
today and it's slated for that bike. Which means I must stop
procrastinating and build the dang wheels.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-09-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I laughed, but in a friendly way, not a sneering way, at your enthusiasm,
and opened my eyes wide at the build list; hi-end! Nice!

I'm not sure a Platypus is my cup o' tea, but yours as described will
certainly be an elegant build and, if you ride it as you've ridden your
others, it will be a very practical build.

Between my eyes and my monitor, I can't say what the frame color is; can
you clarify in words what I can't see on screen? Purpley-gray?

Me, I am just making final arrangements to trade the remnants of a Riv Road
custom for a brutalist, cheap (but nicely cheap!) ready-to-ride Redline
Monocog 29er; this after I just had the same weird custom replaced by a
locally built, more integrated (racks and fenders and lighting routing),
more liberally tired (takes 42s under fenders) replacement.

The Nitto stands look nice, but I wonder if they're not more fiddley than

Well I need to stance and I ordered another one from a company that was
recommended in this thread. But I’m going to have to look at this Nitto one
because it does look good it just takes up a little more space it seems but
probably not too much and I do like the idea of being able to spin the
wheels while the bike is in the house and I’ll try to get upside down.
Please forgive my grammar as I dictated this

Here's our test: we elevate expensive bikes on pedestals in the shop.
They need to stay upright, more or less no matter what. Kids, dogs, bikes
bump into them. These Unior stands are heavy, stable, easy to use, pretty
affordable. Highly adaptable: fat bikes, thru axles, it doesn't matter,
that fork thing just works. Stable without screwing it down, really
insanely stable if you screw it to the floor or a board.

[RBW] Re: Advice on Onyx Hubs

2020-09-29 Thread Joseph Willms
I've got some Onyx road hubs on my road bike from before they offered the
Vesper. The one thing I will tell you is that Onyx hubs are built to last
forever, and I don't think they'd ever put anything out there that won't.
If I were you, I'd just email them directly at sa...@onyxrp.com and see
what they tell you. They've always been good at getting back to me pretty
quickly and answering any and all questions I've ever had.

Hope you enjoy whatever you get. It'll definitely be noticeable climbing
and not having the sound of pawls hitting their engagement points is pretty
awesome too IMO.

Re: [RBW] Re: Looking for in house bike stand/holder

2020-09-29 Thread S. Greco

I got mine from Rene Herse. I got the non-folding variety. I have never
tried the folding one. I rarely need a full repair stand at home and I
really wish I had bought this Nitto one years ago - it's super nice to be
able to rotate the pedals/rear wheel while tuning a derailleur. It's sorta
not compatible with old campy style skews though, because of the way it
pinches the skewer, It works fantastic with most though, especially the
Paul skewers.

Re: [RBW] Advice on Onyx Hubs

2020-09-29 Thread Victor Hanson
I'd say either. Much like the early days of Phil Wood, Onyx has an
impeccable reputation for quality. Greater question why Onyx? If you
can afford it great, but the DT Swiss, with the 36t ratchet assembly is
$350 and represents stellar value.

Re: [RBW] Re: Looking for in house bike stand/holder

2020-09-29 Thread S. Greco
I ordered mine from Rene Herse - the non folding variety. I've never tried
the folding one, but I wish I had bought this Nitto stand years ago. I
rarely need a full work stand, but it's excellent to be able to adjust a
derailleur while spinning the pedals/wheels securely and that stand fits
just about anywhere, or just holds your bike up and looks nice.

[RBW] Re: Advice on Onyx Hubs

2020-09-29 Thread Nick Payne
You know that the 135mm OLN model only comes as a disc hub? The non-disc
hubs are all 130mm. I have one of the older models on a gravel bike, and it
has been perfectly reliable. I do like the completely silent freehub, which
is the reason I bought it. Other than that the new model has swapped from
stainless steel to aluminium for the freehub (not a plus, in my opinion), I
don't know anything about the newer model.

Re: [RBW] Re: AHH max tire width and touring ability

2020-09-29 Thread James Warren
Ah yes, Bill advises well. What you can do for safety while you have this
rack is loop a strap from the rack to the stem and make sure it has
tension. (I use a John's Irish strap for this purpose.) Then if there is
any rack breakage, the rack won't move down and stop the wheel and cause a
crash.

And your bike photo is amazing. It makes me want to go ride. Your bike
model is what the Bike Snob has been enjoying for maybe a year now, and
he's done quite a few blog entries about it.

I’ve recently acquired a newer MIT A Homer Hilsen as my first Riv -

things equal, the Sam would likely be my choice, but I got a great deal, so
 I went for it.

Query 1: In any case, I’m curious what tire/fender/brake combos folks
 are running to maximize tire width (I *think* it’s 42 w/ fenders) - I’d
also be curious on max tire width without fenders (I’d guess a true 47mm).
It’s got the 41.5 (or so) Fatty Rumpkins on currently, and I may just add
some VO Zeppelins and go from there.

Query 2: Have folks loaded their AHHs for touring? If so, with how much
gear? The latest Riv catalog claims 40lbs as a the right max load (set
against 55lbs I believe for the Sam). I did an S24O this weekend and had
roughly 40lbs before I added firewood. Handled fine, and I know weight
rating are generally conservative (though maybe not Riv’s?)

 Many thanks for the information.

Nate,

You can do a huge range of things on that Homer. It's outstanding. And it
looks like you've already proven that with the firewood S240. Go for it.
And if you reach a limit, you'll know it* and find a solution when you
encounter the limit. (*Because, you've already indicated that you are used

Re: [RBW] Back In The Riv Saddle With A '98 Custom Starck-Riv

2020-09-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Shoot, I thought Joe had thought that little thing up just for me. It's a
nice little oddity, but serves no purpose that I can see.

Speaking of oddities, I had Chauncey braze a wire "L" onto the right
seatstay just below the bridge, made I think from an old spoke. This is a
chain hook, tho' Joe put an elegant little shelf on the chainstay for this
purpose just for'ard of the dropout; but that shelf -- a kind of
metalsmith's version of the Columbine hanger -- doesn't work well, since
there is no derailleur to hold the chain taut; the chain just slips off.
But the "L" does hold it up out of the sand (no pretty grass verges here)
when I have to remove the rear wheel by the side of the road.

I'd guess that the L's upright is about 1/2" long. When he made the 2003
Curt replacement (the Curt didn't have that little chainstay lug wing) I
asked him to make the upright longer. He did that. It's about 1 1/2" long,
comically long. But it does work; you can skewer both runs of chain on it
with room to spare.

Both of these are really hidden from sight behind the seatstay; you have to
crane your neck and peer closely to see them.

[RBW] Orange Sam in the House

2020-09-29 Thread True Golden
Thanks everyone.

The orange on my Sam looks to me to be more of a pumpkin orange.

The orange grips are
OneUp Components Lock-On Grips.

I'm liking the feel and comfort.
I've temporarily removed them to try to stain them a bit to subdue the bright
orange.

I'm pretty sure the guy I bought mine from said it was a 2018 Sam.
He had ridden it very few miles.

I love the look of braided housing and gave used it on a several bikes.
I looked for a dark blue braided housing but couldn't locate any.

I got this blue housing from velo orange.

2020-09-29 Thread Nathan Phipps
Good looking out, Bill. I picked up the bike on Friday and had to throw
together a camping setup for Saturday, so there were some compromises - you
know you have good bikes friends when you can source an M-18 and a basket
in 90-minutes! That said, I would like a sturdier setup.

Let me know if anyone is holding at sturdier rack!

Be careful with that basket setup. The diving board on your front rack is
already sagging. Run only really light loads in that basket, unless you
invest in a sturdier front rack. That looks like a Nitto M18. Something
like a Marks Rack could be run with 2 pairs of struts and would be much

Hi Nate,
Looks great! I have a Toyo-built AHH. Clearance is 38 with fenders. (I've

I've done light camping with AHH. For me, AHH did get squirrelly with
heavier loads that my Hunqapillar could handle without fuss.

 Here

I live in a moderate size apartment and keep 6 bicycles reasonably
accessible between a floor stand and 2 hinges. I was concerned with the
weight of my off-road touring bike and was comforted by installing it so
the hook would flex and allow the rear wheel to rest on the floor, while
 still able to pivot easily.

I do recommend mounting hook for the rear wheel to a small piece of
wood to protect the paint from tire marks.

[RBW] Advice on Onyx Hubs

2020-09-29 Thread Elijah Bernstein-Cooper
I would like to build a rear wheel for my 2020 Atlantis with an Onyx hub. I
am debating between their newer Vesper model and older model. My priority
is a durability over weight, within reason.

Onyx has a new model out, Vesper, which is apparently lighter than their
older model by 200g. However I don't mind a little extra weight and I'd
prefer to have a more sturdy hub.

Does anyone have insight into if the reduced weight in the newer Vesper
model sacrificed any durability?

[RBW] AHH max tire width and touring ability

2020-09-29 Thread Nathan Phipps

Hiya. Long-time fanboy, first-time owner here.

I’ve recently acquired a newer MIT A Homer Hilsen as my first Riv - very
fun bike, and I suspect it will help me explore which Riv is for me - and
maybe it’s the AHH. We shall see. I tend to prefer cantis, and all things
equal, the Sam would likely be my choice, but I got a great deal, so I went
for it.

Query 1: In any case, I’m curious what tire/fender/brake combos folks are
running to maximize tire width (I *think* it’s 42 w/ fenders) - I’d also be
curious on max tire width without fenders (I’d guess a true 47mm). It’s got
the 41.5 (or so) Fatty Rumpkins on currently, and I may just add some VO
Zeppelins and go from there.

[RBW] Re: Clem L Weight

2020-09-29 Thread Jim Whorton
For what it's worth, here's the weight of my Clem H, also 59 cm:

36.4 pounds
Mostly stock build (switched the Tallux stem for a shorter Technomic)
Brooks B17 saddle
MSW Pork Chop rear rack (650 grams)
Small Jandd "Bike Bag" with pump, tube, multi tool, etc.

It is not a light bike.
