[RBW] Re: Tubolito Anyone?

2020-10-20 Thread Nick Payne
I recently purchased and installed a pair of their "touring" tubes in my
gravel bike. I had been running the tyres on that bike tubeless, but I
don't ride it all that often, and I found that a) I would get less than
half a dozen rides in on the bike before I would need to top up the sealant
because it had mostly evaporated, and b) the infrequent use was causing the
sealant (Orange Seal) to coagulate at the lowest point of the tyres, making
them quite unbalanced unless I periodically dismounted them and stripped
out the solidified pools of sealant.

So far so good with the Tubolito tubes - I haven't ridden them very far,
but I can't notice a difference (using exactly the same tyres) compared to
the previous tubeless setup. The tubes are marked as being for tyre sizes
between 30mm and 47mm - I have them in 38mm tyres. I bought them from a
local webstore for $A30 each (that's ~$US21), though I notice that bike24
are selling them for a bit less than €14 ($US16.50) each:
https://www.bike24.com/p2312527.html. I also bought a specific patch kit
for them (haven't had to use it so far), though I notice that the review of
them on bikerumor.com says that the reviewer bunged on a Park pre-glued
patch when he did get a puncture, and that held up fine for the last 300
miles of the test period (
https://bikerumor.com/2018/05/10/trail-tested-tubolito-tubo-lightest-strongest-fastest-inner-tube-century/
).

[RBW] Re: What v-brakes for Susie?

What size Susie? That may or may not make some difference. My v-brake arms
are 107mm. I am running 700 x 2.6" Teravail Honchos on RhynoLite XL rims on
my size large Susie. I have about 15mm clearance. The braze-ons are
well-placed, so that the pads are right near the end of the slots. If I
were running fenders or 2.8s I would look for brakes with longer arms.
There is a list somewhere on the internet, but it's getting a bit long in
the tooth at this point.

[RBW] Tubolito Anyone?

2020-10-20 Thread Corwin
Hi -

Today walking through REI, I saw an orange plastic-looking tube called
"Tubolito". I was shocked when I saw the price: $37.95. The Tubolito
website (http:tubolito.com) claims they are lighter and stronger than other
tubes.

Personally, I'm not inclined to spend $38 on a tube unless it's the last
tube I will ever mount on a given wheel. Has anyone on this list has had
experience with Tubolito tubes? Good? Bad? Unremarkable?

Namaste,

Corwin

[RBW] Re: In-kind donations for effective cycling advocacy

2020-10-20 Thread Collin A
Is the goal to supply under-served populations with tools and equipment
they would otherwise not be able to afford, or to have a more broad impact
on society's treatment of certain populations? I'm not trying to get
philosophical, just that the difference between the two will impact whether
it's better to fund Riv's BRP or something like the ACLU.

Regardless, selling the parts and donating the funds is the easiest and
most effective way to go I think. You could always ask Riv if they want the
old parts I guess?

Good Luck,
Collin in Sacramento

Re: [RBW] In-kind donations for effective cycling advocacy

2020-10-20 Thread Benjamin L. Kelley
Always a tricky thing. The bike charity co-op in NYC that I dropped parts
off at before moving back to KC, they would go through more desirable parts
and sell online or in their retail location with funds going to the
operation. So maybe just looking for the right co-op that does that sort of
thing is an answer, or put that stipulation on your donation?
I've also seen people who will sell items at market value or maybe below
and denote that proceeds are going to charity, kinda like a bake sale.
I'm personally fond of that approach and will be doing with some odd and
ends later in the year.
You could also offer up on a forum and state that the buyer can donate the
dollar amount of their item to a list of charities and provide proof, then
you can provide them the item. I use a software product that the owner
calls charityware, where you can only obtain a license for the product by
providing a receipt to a charity of your choice. I've also seen raffles
done recently like this.

[RBW] In-kind donations for effective cycling advocacy

2020-10-20 Thread Jay Lonner
Over the years I have amassed a sizable stash of really nice components
that I no longer need - Paul brakes and levers, Nitto stems and handlebars,
XTR M900 wheelset, SON dynohub, etc. It's all valuable on the open market,
but Riv's BRP has got me thinking about how best to donate it for maximal
benefit. My fear is that if I just dropped it all off at my local bike
co-op the best stuff will be skimmed by the staff. I've thought of reaching
out to Riv directly to see if they could repurpose it for the BRP, but that
potentially creates issues they'd rather avoid (liability, not wanting to
become a used parts dumping ground, etc.). So I thought I'd poll the nice
folks here for some ideas on how to Marie Kondo my parts bin while serving
the interests of social justice. It may be that the best move will be to
take a page from Peter Singer and sell the stuff outright and then donate
the proceeds - in that case stay tuned, since I'll probably list it all
here first.

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-20 Thread Drew Saunders
Many years ago, I decided to try my hand at building my own wheels. Armed
with a copy of Jobst Brandt's "The Bicycle Wheel," rims and spokes from
Wheelsmith, I did manage to make a build a pair of wheels. The front was OK
(until I crashed and bent it beyond repair), the rear wasn't a very usable
wheel. I learned two things from my experience:

1: I will happily pay a professional to build my wheels.

2: How to better true and maintain my wheels, which has been invaluable
knowledge.

When I picked up a pair of clearance wheels from Supergo, armed with my
knowledge of how incomplete machine-build wheels are, I followed the final
tensioning (heavy gloves, lots of squeezing and flattening etc.) and truing
instructions from Jobst's book and turned cheap off-the-rack wheels into
quite good ones. They lasted for many years until a spoke pulled through
the rear rim, and the front would still be going strong if I hadn't bought
a Velocity-built pair from Riv to replace them.

Go for it, at the very least, you'll have a better appreciation for what
goes into building wheels, whether they're well built or poorly built.

[RBW] WTB: 56cm Atlantis/ 60cm Cheviot

2020-10-20 Thread EGNolan
Hi all,
I'm on the hunt for a 26" wheeled 56cm Atlantis (could also do a newer 55
or so) or a 60cm Cheviot. I'd prefer complete (and I'm comfortable changing
out parts to suit my preferences) but would entertain frame/fork combos as
well. Lemme know whatcha got and whatcha want.

I'm currently riding a 57cm Roadini that just doesn't have enough standover
(though on the bike fit is pretty perfect) and would definitely be willing
to do a partial trade for it or sell it out right if that makes sense for
someone.

Best,
Eric N

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-20 Thread tuolumne bikes
Steven, the list members seem to have a hard time following instructions.
Don't build your own wheels.

I have built two sets of wheels using the bikes as truing stands with blue
masking tape across the seat stays/fork as a guide. Make sharpie marks on
the tape as needed, and flip the wheels. I also used YouTube, an online
spoke length calculator, a Phillips bit with one set of the fins ground
off, a cordless drill, and a spoke wrench. Any competent professional could
tell you my wheels suck, and building would certainly go faster with better
tools and training. I've used them for five years without problems beyond
the occasional truing that all wheels need. If you're planning on extended
touring, have more money than time and aptitude, or are a bike abuser have
a pro make some bombproof wheels.

2020-10-20 Thread Ash
For a couple of weeks I had used Avid single digit 7 v-brakes, with
650bx2.15 Almotion tires. Felt like there was just enough room for
fenders. Hence these brakes *won't* be an option for those wider tires you
want to use.

Now I'm running Avid Shorty Ultimate cantis.

Thanks Garth. I guess that's an option, but I don't want to do an
"end-around" on Rivendell (though it seems they are not having an issue
selling them!) I imagine Jim is busy building the next batch for Riv, and
if everyone contacted him directly whenever Riv got sold out... we'll see.
I'll give Rivendell a call and see if they have an ETA for the next batch.

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-20 Thread R. Alexis
Steven,

Go for it!

I have built, rebuilt and trued up and redished many a wheel. Built my
first wheelset using Wilderness Trail Bikes Classic Grease Guard freewheel
hubs with Mavic 217, 26" rims for my 1991 Bridgestone MB-0(Zip) frameset. I
worked at a bike shop at the time so I had The Bicycle Wheel book,
Wheelsmith spoke calculator, Phil Wood spoke cutter, truing stand, dishing
took and wrenches available along with the shop manager, who was a well
accomplished wheel builder. I built the wheel at the shop when I had time.

Since that time I have built several wheels along with several rim and one
hub transplant. I am meticulous. I got my own Park truing stand, dishing
tool, ended up purchasing the Wheelsmith spoke calculator set and Phil Wood
spoke cutter, that I sold. Also bought The Bicycle Wheel book and read it
from cover to cover.

All the wheels that I have built seem to hold up. The rim transplant ones
have ended up on bikes I sold. They seem to be working well. The hub
transplant was a 36 hole SunTour Superbe Pro freewheel that replaced a
Suntour XC-Comp cassette hub on a Araya VX-400(?) . The dimensions on the
hubs were close and I spaced the freewheel hub to 132.5mm OLD to offer
versatility,

Currently I have one wheelset to build and two others I plan on replacing
the alloy nipples with brass. Will probably get around to that this fall or
winter.

Hope this helps.

Reginald Alexis
