I’m sick of carrying things in a backpack and have become increasingly intrigued by the Carradice-esque Swift Zeitgeist and Bags by Bird Goldback. But they appear to be sold out everywhere. Eric’s FS post a few days back inspired me to give the original inspiration a try on my Hilsen. At least until the aforementioned makers begin production again.

So if anyone has a Carradice Barley (or Super C Audax) and a Bagman support that are just gathering dust, let me know…

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-22 Thread Roberta
I like the look of a trouser guard. I guess that is similar to a bash
guard. Very practical and can be very pretty.

I'm probably going with a 1x11, perhaps a 1x12, but I haven't spoken with
James at Analog about differences yet, except for the price. I live in a
fairly flat place and even if I got a triple, I don't think I'm strong
enough to use even the easiest of the easy gears. Is it possible to put a
trouser guard on a 1x? I guess my front ring would be a "double?"

I love the look of fenders, but will probably wait on them, since for
multimodal transport, they create complications.

[RBW] FS: Budget 700C Platypus Wheelset

2020-10-22 Thread Bill Lindsay
SF Bay Area local sale only.

My dear friend Doug retired his A. Homer Hilsen and moved on to a Clem L.
I sold the frameset for him a while back, but I still have the wheelset.
I'm putting up this wheelset for sale so the universe can give me a sign.
Does the universe want me to sell this wheelset to a new Platypus owner?
Or does the universe want me to get a new Platypus to fit this wheelset?
We'll see which it is.

Silver Shimano Deore Hubs front and rear, with skewers. 36 spokes.
Velocity Synergy rims. 700C, silver, machined sidewalls. The rear rim is
assymmetric. The wheelset is in excellent used condition

The 'budget' Rivendell wheelset is $310. I'd like to leave this wheelset
out on my porch for you to pick up at half that price. $165, no shipping.

[RBW] FS: 1st Gen Burnt Orange Sam Hillborne 56cm

2020-10-22 Thread Minh
hi all, with great sadness i need to sell my RBW bikes, first up is my
Orange Sam, that was mostly built as a camp bike. please see the attached
album for pics but a few highlights. sam fs album

   - $1450 for the bike as you see it.
   - 56cm 1st gen Sam, which is a 59cm top tube
   - mostly standard riv build, sprint shifters, nitto stem, bars
   (noodles), post
   - riv special brooks saddle with copper rails/rivets
   - paul touring/neo canti brakes with trp levers
   - white industries cranks, with mks pedals
   - son delux dyno hub with an edelux front light
   - phils rear freewheel
   - rear nitto rack
   - 700x37 pasela tourguards
   - vo fenders, clearance is a little tight
   - if you dig the blue tape, i will include a pack of blue viva tape to
   freshen it up

there are a few scratches here and there. i'm about 6ft tall and standover
is good, reach is pretty good.

this bike is mostly ready to ride, i say mostly because i had a front rack
that i sold off, which makes the front fender a little wobbly. i'd suggest
getting a new one to secure it. the wiring for the lights could use a
little tidying up as well.

i'm in the washington dc area and would prefer to do a local sale if
possible, and i would be willing to meet within a few hours for a serious
buyer.

if i can't sell it as is, i would consider parting it out, so if there is
something you really want send me a message and i'll make a note of it.

[RBW] WTB: 45t 110bcd Chainring

2020-10-22 Thread David B
Searching for a 45t 110bcd chainring.

I've found a 'magic' gear to single speed my Redwood without a chain
tensioner, and now have to work around tooth counts to get a gear that I
want, which involves me needing a 45t chainring.

I know Riv has sold odd-tooth chainrings in the recent past (43t for sure),
but vaguely think I saw a 45t some time back. I could be mis-remembering
this though.

So, either way, looking for a chainring with the following criteria:
110bcd
Silver preferred
45 teeth
Any brand would be fine

Contact off list if you can - or send an email through my webshop contact
form (https://treetop.bigcartel.com/contact) if you can't reply using this
interface.
Thanks,
David

I’d you put the 650b wheels on your 700c frame, you won’t have brakes. Not
the best thing for your big hill!

I’m glad you guys are resurrecting this thread. I am bored to tears over here
and talking bikes is good for morale. I got the fenders squared away. Analog
ordered the VO fluted fenders in 63 mm for my 43 or 44 (I forget) mm tires. I
also ordered the PDW breakaway tabs, which, incidentally was new to Analog. I
think with the trail riding they like to do those tabs are a good thing for
them to know about.

As far as cranksets, I just went with Silver from Rivendell. I nearly went 1x,
but honestly, I love the trouser guard (looks so clean) and I really do use
both cogs in front on the daily for Killer Hill. We won’t live here forever, so
if I do end up in flatter terrain someday, maybe I’ll try 1x then. Why do you
want a triple, Tom?

I’m still waiting for...everything. I have a pair of pretty, white Ergons and
THAT’S IT. The wheels aren’t scheduled to arrive at Analog until 11/6 (Velocity
is low on stock and these are being anodized), and the Platypus and its parts
are still at Rivendell. Hurry up and wait.

And because of the parts shortage, I would highly recommend to everyone that if
you are planning on ordering a Platypus, best get your parts ordered now. I
thought I was ahead of the game when I ordered my wheelset and dyno on 9.25,
since the Platypus wasn’t supposed to arrive until late November. But, the way
it looks, it will be Thanksgiving before I will be able to ride this bike.
2020, people. Ugh...

But, I do have those old 650b Clem wheels just sitting in my garage...what’s
the worst thing that could happen if I put those on my 700c bike? 

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-22 Thread lconley
Another great thing about building your own wheels is that you can build
with used parts. I have developed quite a stash of used spokes and nipples
and rims, less so with hubs - I usually have a purpose with the hubs, which
is what results in the leftover rims, etc. I had a set of Peter White
wheels that I have had for 9 years, still perfect, but the 48 spoke SON
dyno front hub was perfect for my Riv cargo Bike and the Phil 48 spoke rear
hub was perfect for the Gus Boots Wilsen, so they got disassembled and
build onto wheels with much, much wider rims. My rims and tires are
definitely getting wider as I get older.
The current wheel building challenge is some 28" (635) roadster rims (28H
front, 40H rear) on a Flying Pigeon with some drum brake hubs instead of
the rod brakes, I had a local wheel builder build them years ago, but they
have never been correct (even the builder said so) - will not true up well.
The brake side is a huge flange and the non-brake side is tiny. It appears
that the correct way to build these is to mix cross patterns on different
sides of the hubs instead of 3X on both sides. Note that newer Sturmey
Archer drum brake hubs (Pashley Guv'nor) have large flanges on the
non-brake side to avoid this dilemma.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-22 Thread Tom Wyland
Well, all my bikes have fenders and I've found there is nothing more
annoying than a fender that rubs the tire when you go over bumps, etc. I
always size them 10mm wider than the tire. So a 43mm tire isn't going to
work very well with 45mm fenders unless the tires inflate to much smaller
than the stated width.

I'm having similar mental gymnastics, but not around fenders. I'm thinking
about a crankset for my Platypus. I guess you can't go wrong with the
Rivendell Silver, but I'm looking for a vintage triple I can put a bash
guard onto, maybe?

[RBW] Re: In-kind donations for effective cycling advocacy

2020-10-22 Thread ascpgh
Lot's of hesitation on donating high end parts to bike co-ops for the
concern of staff skimming. Ask what they do with such donations when you're
about to move your stash. One of the coolest things I've come across is a
co-op that uses such donations to propel their work with in-need and under
served cycling communities by selling those premier donated parts on eBay
to fund things they need most. A resold SON generator hub could fund a pile
of Alivio RDs or cable and housing sets. I have been looking at eBay
listings for bike parts seeking the co-op offerings for this reason.

I too have some wood fenders I am planning on using. I was just up in the
general direction of HQ and called to see if maybe I could stop by and see
a prototype, but they shot me down. :-(
Would have been nice to help me make my mind up and visualize the whole

Leah, I don't think I'd worry about getting the fenders MM perfect; as long
as the fender covers the majority of the tire it should be fine; 90% of the
spray comes off the center of the tire anywayz.
On top of that how many 700 X 50mm tires are there at this point?
Some 43MM Gravel King slicks would probably be Ideal for a build like this!

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-22 Thread masmojo

>

> and when it comes to bike builds now I just assume I'll be building wheels!

I was just working on a wheel this evening and I thought there's like a
hundred pointers I could give you, but it's all a bit much for me to jot
down logically in a post and for you to remember as well, BUT here's a
couple :

It's sort of like cutting wood, measure twice (maybe 3 times) and order
spokes once
It can be a little hit or miss sometimes, because unless you have
specialized measuring tools a MM here & a MM there can all sort of add up
and before you know it, your spokes are 2mm too long (URGH!), if this
happens don't freak out, give yourself a break, stash those away for
another day and get some new ones! It happens even to the best builders,
(although less the more experienced you get)
When you start, lace the spokes that go from the insides of the flanges
FIRST; then the ones that exit the outside of the flanges last; trust me
this will save you a ton of work!!! and don't forget to cross the last
spoke over the third spoke it crosses. (for a 3X)

Some pro touches?
Align the logo on the hub so that it faces the valve hole (not important
just one of those things experienced wheel builders do)
Different colored nipples or even spokes on either side of the valve hole.
(I frequently do this with nipples, but only once with the spokes
themselves; most people don't have any extras lying around that the can sub
in; it's byproduct of having built a fair number of wheels. :-)
Depending on what stand you are using you shouldn't need a dishing tool; I
haven't used one in 39 years! My park stand centers the wheel and the rim
so the wheel just comes out dished.

Have fun
