[RBW] Re: Bike mirrors

2020-10-31 Thread dougP
Have you thought about mirrors that clip onto your glasses? I see they now
also have a helmet adapter.

https://takealookactive.com/gallery/

Personally I use a "beer-view mirror" A friend makes these as a hobby. He
has common brands but the fun is give him a cap from some obscure beer or
soft drink. My current favorite is the Lost Coast brewery, and my wife
(who's not a beer drinker) has one with the Brooklyn bridge; she's
originally from Brooklyn. The take-a-look is the most user friendly &
easiest to adjust, but nowhere near as much fun.

[RBW] Bike mirrors

2020-10-31 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I never had a mirror until 2012, which was when I got my Betty Foy and
discovered that mirrors existed. I bought the German mirror from Rivendell and
it’s all I’ve ever had since. But, I got a new bike now and I’m wondering if
there is anything else better than the mirror I got in 2012. I don’t think I
want one of those mirrors screwed into my bar end, because it’s weird (like a
contraption from a Dr. Seuss book).

Anyway, do I just use my old trusty German mirror? Or is there a more sleek,
modern, useful one I could snag for my Platypus?

Thanks!
Leah

[RBW] 10.29.20 Blahg music

2020-10-31 Thread Patrick Moore
I disagree with much that Grant asserts, but I agree with much else; at any
rate, we're both of us in the same ancient cohort (I think he's 1 year
older than I), and his music inserts often resonate. The lastest (Ode to
Billy Joe) made me think of other music favorites of our distant era.

One of my first (a year earlier: Sgt Pepper LP and Hey Jude/I Am The Walrus
45, not to mention, gawd 'elp us, The Ventures) popular music memories was
this one (link below) that I picked up from the local radio top 10, age 13;
and I picked it up in those pre-universal-connectivity days because for
Christmas my mother had sweetly bought me the crystal radio kit (yes, you
could still get them) that I had asked for. I built it and tuned it to the
local pops station, and heard this, over and over and over and over again.
One song of many*, but the one that has stuck in my mind.

Hardly racist, but perhaps sexist; to atone for the sexism, I append
another favorite from the era.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyoMl-7QJSg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FOUqQt3Kg0

Bike content: *I* think that calypso goes perfectly with Just Ride. Also, I
was already customizing my late '60s Raleigh Sport with drop bar, rat trap
pedals, and top-tube "four on the floor" shifter with big black knob.

* The local pops culture was local but not entirely isolated from global
pop culture. For next birthday, #14, my very conservative (but hardly
unenlightened) father very indulgently went out to a local record (= vinyl
disc) store and bought me the latest "Let It Bleed" R Stones album.

Re: [RBW] Re: Can someone do a timeline on where Rivs were made and when?

2020-10-31 Thread Jason Fuller
The resources Jim has amassed are wonderful and impressive, but I'm
surprised there isn't a more formalized timeline out there (great use of a
long-scroll style infographic!) considering the amount of Riv catalog that
is still generally lost to history otherwise! For instance I was trying to
find info on the previous Rosco's - good freaking luck! You'd think they
never existed, save a couple dozen photos spread across the internet.

An infographic that showed when each batch of each model was released would
be too cool, IMO! Maybe with its headbadge as the 'emblem' along it. I
might try to enlist my graphic designer partner in this...

[RBW] FS: Nitto Tallux Stem - 50mm/26.0mm - $72 shipped

2020-10-31 Thread David B
I'm setting up my Clem with Crust Shaka bars and overestimated the
shortness of stem reach that I'd need. My Clem's a first generation before
the top tube got a bit longer, so apparently I didn't need as short of stem
as I needed. Good though for drop bars on long top-tube'd bikes. If this
was a current generation Clem - this is what I'd need. Would be nice with
Albastache bars or wider drops. I've tracked down the correct stem that I
need so looking to sell this outright - no trades.

So... for sale...
Nitto Tallux Stem
26.0mm clamp
50mm reach
Greased the quill and installed after receiving this yesterday, and ridden
a few times in my alley before realizing it was too short for my liking
with this bar combo.

Looks like I got one of the last ones in stock as Rivendell appears to be
out of stock of this size at the moment.

Asking $72 shipped. A few bucks off Riv's price and free conUS shipping.
Happy to ship other places to - with shipping be adjusted as appropriate.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar bags

2020-10-31 Thread Roberta
Nice. there is another more subtle color in the "painted hills" top. Be
sure to get some teal in there.

If you go custom with Randi Jo,perhaps two of the same bag that the parts
color placement compliment each other?

I have two of the same bartender style bag in complimentary colors that I
sometimes put on my bike, on either side of the stem---one for water
bottle, the other for phone, tools, granola bar, etc. It is a cohesive
look that I like. Your XS saddle sack probably holds more, though.

[RBW] WTB: Rivendell Nitto Faceplater Stem... or similar riser stem! 110mm!!

2020-10-31 Thread Paul Budnitz
Hello All.

Title says it all. I actually ordered one of these, then cancelled, now too
late and I feel real dumb.

If anyone has a 110mm version of Rivendell's new riser stem (see it here
,
it's sold out in my size) or equivalent riser stem I'd be super grateful.

I have a dirt drop, but it's a little too short.

THANK YOU!
Paul

Rambouillet was not made in the US, AFAIK. The first "named" production
models - Atlantis and Rambouillet (as opposed to "Rivendells") were
Japanese (Toyo) built.
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet/index.html

Bleriot was essentially a distribution deal through QBP which was a Maxway
built (Taiwan) version of the Saluki

[RBW] Re: Can someone do a timeline on where Rivs were made and when?

2020-10-31 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
This has come up before, and those are interesting threads - so worth using
the search feature for the group - one of the real assets of having this
via the googling-groups...

There was a spreadsheet posted here -
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JRuMAwuQ-Rc6bQXCBmfkmXA9jMMF5zBdBIyUOmkruYM/edit#gid=0

There was a thread from back in 2013 - quoted below:

The _VERY_ rough page for "Generation 1" Rivendell frames is here:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/gen1/

There are some Catalog scans (Catalog #5) of the Road Standard, Long Low
and All Rounder

The Long Low (and Road Standard) begat the Rambouillet

The All Rounder begat the Atlantis

As for the the specifics... wow. That's probably a bit of an
essay.

My opinion is that most of the Rivendell models have been tweaks and
evolutions. One of the driving factors was actually the availability of
certain parts - specifically "real world" reach brakes and large volume,
round profile tires. When the Long Low was around, most of the road tires
were 19, 21 and 23 cm, while the brake reach was extremely limited. So,
there's that.

The other thing is that I think Grant hones in on what makes each bike
different and then intensifies the ideas - the essence of each design, if
you will. For example, the Rambouillet sits between the Hilsen and the
Roadeo, but probably each is influenced by it. When the Rambouillet came
out, it wasn't common to ramble singletrack and mountain trails on a "road"
bike, but with the increased clearances and larger volume tires, it was
possible. That design really was at the edge of what could be done with
common brake components, and when the Silver dual pivots came out, that
obstacle was removed. Big tires and ample clearance moved the design one
way (Hilsen) and then the idea of running the comfy undercarriage (itself
influenced by working with the 650B/584 tire size), but bringing back the
light responsiveness of the Rambouillet into a more road focused design
gave us the Roadeo.

If you read back through the early Readers, Grant wrote a lot about this -
trying to maximize his ideas against the realities of what was available.
Sitting here in 2013, it's hard to believe that only 10 years ago it was
about race-driven design. That pretty much no one had heard of larger than
23 cm road tires, let alone 650B. If you have the time, get the copies of
the early Readers - it's well worth going through them.

The 2009 Series - which gave rise to the Hillborne was really a refinement
of the Atlantis made by someone other than Toyo. Unfortunately economics
of Japanese crafted frames has been a challenge. I still want to expand
some of the RBW history on the site - but have been pretty busy getting my
VO work up and running for the past year or so. Here are specific "early
model" pages:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/atlantis

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/bleriot

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/bombadil

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/hilsen

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/quickbeam

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/romulus

It's also interesting to see how the idea of frames begin and where they
end up. The First Bombadil doesn't look at all like the final iteration,
while the Hunqapillar morphed dramatically during conception.

There's a lot of gaps in what I just wrote, of course. The answer I always
give is that when you are ready to get a bicycle that rides great
everywhere, and can be adapted to your needs, it's time to check out
Rivendell.

The Atlantis started in Japan, too. Bleriot was the first Taiwan model,
then some time after that the costs got so high for the Toyo frames that it
made more sense to have those done in USA at Waterford. There are two model
names that have existed on Toyo, Waterford and MIT frames: Atlantis and
Homer.

You might look for these used XTR 9-speed RDs on ebay: rd-m952
They work with 9-speed and have barrel adjusters.
Or there is an XT version. RD-M750
With these RDs you don't have to worry about cassette size or chain wrap

~IMPORTANT~ Note to all~~ EMAIL ETIQUETTE
If you forward this email, please highlight and delete the forwarding
history, which includes my email address and maybe others. It is a courtesy
to me and others who may not wish to have their email addresses sent all
over the world. Erasing the history helps prevent Spammers from obtaining
addresses, prevents viruses from being propagated, and limits the
proliferation of spam. Also, please use the “BCC” area instead of “TO” and
“CC” when forwarding to several people at once.

Rambouillet and Saluki were made by Toyo in Japan.  They never were US made.

[RBW] Can someone do a timeline on where Rivs were made and when?

2020-10-31 Thread Joel S
I had an first run Rambouillet and Saluki, I just assumed they were USA
made. I see a lot of posts saying Toyo so I am not sure if this was for
the original runs or a bit later runs. I always thought the first not made
in USA was the MIT Bleriot.

Thanks
