[RBW] Re: Platform pedal recommendations

2020-11-03 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
How about the MKS Grip Monarch that Rivendell sells? I've been riding a
pair for most of this year and like them a lot. Big, roomy and grippy.
https://www.rivbike.com/products/pedals-mks-new-2018
They have reflectors but are protected from damage and I believe that they
can each be popped out by releasing the two expanding tabs.

Hey, who wants to hear a funny story? I ordered two mirrors - one bar end, one

So, I tried the bar mounted mirror. It fell apart as I was tightening the screw.

Hello Everyone.

Sorry for the slow reply. For some reason my account now requires my posts

My wife loves her bike. Finally riding with no pain. And yeah, I kind of

afternoon while she was out, but it took a few weeks/tries to get the stem
right. This super tall one is from eBay (ie. China), just Google "tall
quill stem" and a bunch come up!

[RBW] Re: Bike mirrors

2020-11-03 Thread Ben Mihovk
I use the German mirror and the Take-a-look helmet mirror simultaneously.
The German mirror is a nice, wide look at what's behind me, but it makes
objects seem farther away than they are. The Take-a-Look mirror seems to be
a better gauge of how close cars are coming up behind me. As others have
pointed out, the only thing I don't like about a helmet mirror is I seem to
have to re-adjust if I even breathe on it wrong.

In one of my favorite articles from the Riv website about bike commuting,
Grant suggest that you use mirrors AND "look like a nutcase." Helmet
mirrors get both birds with one stone.

[RBW] WTB: Silver or Dia Comp Downtube Shifter or pair of Bar End Shifters

2020-11-03 Thread Nikko in Oakland
Hey y'all,

I'm running a SRAM RD now, but can see that crapping out soon and having to
move to this Shimano XT RD. I have a right downtube shifter, but need a
left one to match. My right DT shifter is a Dia Comp one
. I'd love a
matching one, but would be fine with any Silver DT shifter, too.

Alternatively, if someone has a pair of bar-end shifters lying around, I'd
love to buy those used.

Holler at me,
Nikko

[RBW] Re: Bike mirrors

2020-11-03 Thread aeroperf

This is why I love this group.
For two years I’ve been thinking about getting a mirror so that I can see
the people with silent bikes overtaking me before they yell “On your left”.
I check, and Leah has started a thread. Motivation. Three days later I’m
trying out a Hafny mirror. Thanks, Leah, and thanks, Steve Cole.
I have Albatross bars with bar-end shifters on my Sam, so mine mounts best
under the bar and ahead of the brake lever.

Re: [RBW] Re: 10.29.20 Blahg music

2020-11-03 Thread Patrick Moore
You said "local" pop music. At the time, at least the city stations (and I
was 13 searching stations on a little slider) largely played imports from
US and Europe (and the Caribbean). I do recall "Raindrops Keep Falling on
My Head" from Butch Cassidy and the "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" theme
and "Je t'aime." I'm sure they played All Along the Watchtower and Ob La Di
Ob La Da and Twentieth Century Fox, too. A 14 year old friend was very
proud of his copy of the first Doors' album and the downtown record stores
had all the current Western hits. I don't know any Kenyan popular music,
I'm afraid, tho' for West African popular music, or sort-of popular, I
listened much later to Sona Jobarteh and Boubacar Traore; I listen but
don't know much about them. I gather that Gospel music is very popular in
Kenya nowadays, but that is western -- in style as well as lyrics -- music
brought back to Africa and then re-Kenyan-ized. Popular Kenyan culture had
and I think still has little to do with blues or jazz or rap; in fact,
American blacks (I recall a woman USAID official, and I was invited to the
Sr Prom by a pretty American black classmate whose father was another US
mission official) were just part of the "white" expat world. Our gardener
used to sing what I gather were contemporary popular Kikuyu (his tribe; we
had Luo and Marigoli servants, too) songs while working, at least I recall
hearing modern words like "Toyota" in them, but they were very, very
different from Western pop music; rhythmic chant. Perhaps they were all ad
lib.

>From what I observed as a boy, when black Africans get together, at least
the non-Westernized, they quite spontaneously dance, the way the Irish of
both sexes spontaneously sing in pubs after a few beers. And there is a
huge difference in rhythms and dance styles or types; the Maasai moran have
a unique style, very powerful. https://youtu.be/37BatjDzK5I?t=48 That's
"popular" too, in a different sense, "of the people."

Aside: I recall seeing (~1973) a young moran who had studied at Oxford,
discovered he preferred his boma and herd, and returned to the traditional
ways. The Maasai in particular have managed to preserve their pastoral
culture surprisingly well in the face of population and even more cultural
pressures; which bespeaks the depth of its value. And the moran still kill
lions with spears.

[RBW] FS 58" MUSA Oasis Custom Cycles road frameset + extras

2020-11-03 Thread Andrew Turner
Well this was an unfortunate catch and release but the short stack height
makes building this up as a comfortable all-day road bike for me damn near
impossible. Otherwise it's an amazing handmade frame by Omar Khiel of Oasis
Custom Cycles out in Arizona using a combo of 531 and Dedacciai Zero Uno
tubing. I'm 6'2" so I'd recommend this to someone in the 5'10" range...you
know...someone actually designed for a 58cm frame or even a 56cm frame for
that level handlebar-to-saddle life.

Included in the pics are the
spec sheets Omar supplied me with that go into detail about the geometry,
etc. I bought this from him for $595 free shipping on eBay last week, I'm
asking the same (CONUS shipping) but with that comes the headset, spacers,
Ultegra short reach brakes w/ new salmon pads, 90mm ritchey classic stem
and ritchey classic seatpost.

As far as modifications go, theres a small scratch on the downtube near the
bottle cage mounts and I took off some of the paint from the dropouts to
get the axle to fit. I also threw on a ritchey chainstay guard. Other than
that, it's all new.

Here's a few bullet point specs:

   - 58cm seat tube, 57cm top tube
   - 1" threadless steerer column
   - 27.2 seatpost
   - short reach brakes
   - max tire size is 28

Cheers,
Andrew
