Nice! What kind of saddle is that? Did you have to add bag loops?

[RBW] Re: Plenty of clearance under Medium Saddlesack

2020-11-06 Thread Patrick Moore
Should have added that the large side pockets very usefully hold a rather
generous took kit and wayside stuff (musette, sealant mess rag, med Road
Drive, saddle cover, plus tools) on the right and on the left a Schwalbe
559/584 X 40 mm tube containing generous portion of Airlock (tube doesn't
fold small with the ~3 fl oz or so inside), all of which which usually (ie
when I have a rear rack) go into a largish Ruthworks seat pack.

Big Ben 50’s under sidepull brakes on a Hillborne. That is absolutely the

This is on a 2TT greyish blue 62 cm frame bought in 2014.

[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-06 Thread Nathan Mattia
I think the reason people are so excited about the Hillborne’s is that they
resemble something of a more mainstream bike. I realize it’s not entirely
true, but it seems like for several months, the only bikes you could buy
from Riv had insanely long chain stays or were all step-thru mixtes.
I know that a Gallop or a Platypus may inevitably be in my future, but
people dig more traditional bikes as well.
I’m a bit surprised the middle sizes are sold out so quickly.

Your Sam is from batch of orange when the head tube was not cream. It was the
second color since Sams first came out.

And your Sam’s vintage is excellent. I used to have one until I replaced it

I wonder if Riv knows that so many of you new buyers made your purchases after

[RBW] Re: Sackville quality

2020-11-06 Thread Mark Roland
The material sourcing probably changed, almost inevitable over time these
days. Also, there are significant variations in the canvas "feel" based on
color. This was noted some time ago either on the blagh or in the
descriptions. The blue was stiffest, the gray (not the light grid gray) was
floppiest. Brown and olive at the time were in the middle somewhere. No
idea where it all stands now. I imagine the leather will get more supple
with use, and it will all be fine.

2020-11-06 Thread Patrick Moore
Thinking more clearly, I have to say that my perception is right. Much more
recently, about 2 years ago, I owned and used well a second hand, first-gen
Large Saddlesack, and yes, I recall the the canvas being thicker and the
straps being more supple; no "rough graininess" on the straps that cinch
flap to bottom buckles.

FWIW, I've used all varieties of Carridice Nelsons, Campers, and Juniors,
and I've used Adam and Hoos Baggins, not to mention other makers' bags, so
I have a fair overview of leather and canvas types for saddlebags.

[RBW] Sackville quality

2020-11-06 Thread Patrick Moore
I just got a very good deal on an unused, recent-vintage Sackville
Saddlesack Medium, and I'm quite happy with it, but having owned and
extensively used one some 6-7 years ago before I shortsightedly sold it, I
compared the new one as observed with the old one as in memory, but with
pretty distinct memories, and I have to ask if the later ones were as good
as the originals? From what I recall, the leather straps are very certainly
not as good as before, and the material, while nice, is thinner. Again,
observing the late one, distinct memories of the original one.

Again, I'm not complaining because the price was very right (and the seller
was very prompt; many thanks). But I'd have to judge that the quality of
canvas and leather is less now than before.

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar bags

2020-11-06 Thread Patrick Moore
I hadn't been following this thread, and I'm glad I clicked on this message.

I don't usually pay much attention to bar bags (I've tried a fair number,
but my preferred frames don't encourage heavy front loads), but this bag
and mounting system is one I'd seriously consider. From what I think I've
seen, the permanent-mount clip is small and unobtrusive, and the
decently-sized bag just clips on and off. Now that I am waiting for a
builder to build and send me a new rear rack (for panniers) for my new
fixed/3 speed road bike, and I've just installed Alex's Sackville Medium I
could certainly use a bar bag like this one. I'll keep my eye on it.

I'm sorry your posts about counterfeits were taken down; I'm curious what
went on ...?

1. As Roberta asked, how much weight can this system comfortably carry?

2. And, what colors will it come it?

3. And lastly, how much for the system once on the market? (I won't
pre-order, all bagged out for the year, so I'm curious about the forecast
retail price.)

Nice work, to judge by the information and photos on the linked site!

are super stable. Even with a little distracted riding, the chances of a

Ray,

In a word, yes - I kind of went through the whole goldilocks process trying
to find what I wanted for day-to-day rides including commuting. The
Bombadil breaks one rule--that it's not so expensive that I worry about
it--but I'm trying to let go of that fear (and double lock it!). The Clem
is a little small (I should have gone 52, but I'm pretty in-between on
sizes) and the XO-2 is good but a bit short for an upright bar setup for
me.

That said if I had the space I'd keep them, but being in an apartment (with
a partner whom doesn't want the place filled with bikes) means max 4 bikes,
and I have a mountain bike and a folding bike I don't want to part with too
(the latter is used for lock-up downtown purposes so the Bomba would never
be in really sketchy situations)

I'm a fan of VO's Sabot. It has a large platform (100mm by 100mm, IIRC),
is aluminum and silver, and has shortish rounded pins for grip. The pins
don't rip up my shoes, but they also don't grip well when the pedal's wet.
That last bit is their one downside, but it's a price I'm willing to pay
for pins that don't chew up my soles.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Blue Riv Banana Sax or similar

2020-11-06 Thread Ben Mihovk
Gotcha. I have the x-small saddle sack in Royal and kind of want the banana
sack for a handlebar bag and want them to match. My guess is the TrunkSack
is photographed under artificial light and the banana sack looks to be shot
out in the alley where they shoot all their bikes. I'd be surprised if
Sackville used different materials for these two bags.

The best idea I can give anyone of color is this...oddly, the Newbaum's
navy tape is VERY close to the royal color Sackville used on the x-small
saddlebag.

Unrelated...I noticed you're in Raleigh? My sister-in-law lives there and
my wife and I LOVE visiting...in fact, we were the week before Covid shut
down the country. Huge fan of Trophy Brewing, Players Retreat, Rise
biscuits...I could go on, but I'll leave it at this - I can't wait to visit
Raleigh again!

2020-11-06 Thread esoterica etc

Ben,

Thanks for the help. I was aware that Riv does have the Banana Sax in royal in
stock right now, I was just hoping to find one used and save some cash.

However, when you look at pictures of the royal blue Banana Sax on Riv's
website, and then compare them with the pictures of the royal blue small
TrunkSack, the TrunkSack looks to be a noticeably lighter shade of blue (at
least to my eyes anyways). Maybe it's just a trick of the camera/screen. Anyone
else notice this?

Jason, mind if I ask why you're getting rid of the Clem/XO-2 so soon? Has

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-06 Thread Ben Mihovk
I'm also a new Riv owner as of late September after REALLY wanting one
since about 2006. Like others, I Riv'd up a less expensive bike to scratch
the itch and it was also the PLP videos about the Sam that pushed me over
the edge. I had been saving up money from my summer job VERY aggressively
to purchase a Rivendell and had planned on waiting until my 40th birthday
in May of 2021. But Russ's video dropped in early August, I started calling
and e-mailing questions about which frame is best for me, and had an order
placed before the end of the month. Absolutely zero regrets. The quality of
the build and components (still blown away at the difference between a nice
wheel set and what comes on a complete bike from a web order company) in
conjunction with a frame that actually fits me has been an eye-opening
experience.

I was a little worried about the Sams being released and kicking myself for
going with an Atlantis just because my size was available when I was ready
to buy. However, as much as I love the color and look of the Sam, their
suggestion of 220 being a cut off for the bike makes me glad I did not
wait. I'm at their recommended weight max and I carry a good 10lbs of stuff
with me without even trying on my daily commute. Plus, Russian Sub green
and a rainbow double top tube on the 59cm blows away everything else!

I'm VERY happy to see frames getting snapped up and Rivendell staying busy.
I'm also glad I bought my bike when I did...I'm guessing turnaround times
will be a little slow with all the Sams that got snapped up. Anyone doing a
full Rivendell build and get a time quote?

everything ready to go. I'll post pictures when it's done, but you can
expect that it's going to be singular and color-coordinated ;-)

My understanding is that the *bars* are the same shape and size; they
differ in the stem attachment. I have the c-m ones because that's what
came with the bike. The norm version is more versatile.

There is a lot of choco-love here Good luck with your search.
