Absolutely love this build. Sort of hope that Riv does a tigged (cheaper)

[RBW] Re: How large of a tire will a Sam Hillborne actually fit

2020-11-07 Thread Jason Fuller
Ray, I ran the Ultradynamico Rosé on my Hillborne (one batch ago) which
measure 49-50mm in reality, and there was at least 5mm per side thru the
fork and lots of clearance at the back. I would feel comfortable running
any tires labeled 48c, but I don't think I'd try a 2.1". Besides, anything
bigger than 48c doesn't make sense to me - you're starting to change the
geometry (namely BB height) and push the bike outside the zone its meant
for, and neither of these things are going to make the bike ride better.

I haven't heard evidence of more than the two prototypes (though I'm far
from "in the know" as well), the one which is silver-ish might be the color
but I don't see any blue in it..

Interesting that that page notes the frameset, since I was last told they
would only be offered as completes. Perhaps the difficulties in putting
together a parts package right now changed their minds since it would push
the date they could sell them out too far.

Grant has ranted against carbs as well but we’re still eating bread.

In my case having an e-bike makes me take far fewer trips by car than I would
without an e-bike. I’m not going to go car free because I like to drive but I
do use my cars way less these days. I have a cargo e-bike so I am able to do
virtually all of my shopping by bike. Including large Costco runs. I’m the dork
with the huge package of toilet paper on the rear rack.

I don’t see myself ever getting a recreational e-bike anytime but that could
change as I continue to age.

It's a matter of this isn't a Riv-sponsored group and some of us like these
new lightweight motors and batteries on our bikes. They're not bicycles in
the pure sense, they're a different thing that can be useful and fun. It
just so happens that Riv frames make a very good base for a kit.

It's not the beautiful Riv fillet version, but it will get the job done if

Ordered it back in August, but too short for me after more cockpit

$80 shipped would be awesome!

Sounds good. Happy riding.
I am in a similar boat - after leaving my grey Roadini with my sister in
Wales in December to have something nice to ride when I visit family, I
snagged the last web special orange Roadini mid September. I have had an
order in for Dyad rims (already have Bitex hubs and Sapim spokes) since
early October, and still waiting.
Bike is almost completely built - even put the Crane bell and the bartape
on!
Losco handlebars and a Nitto faceplate stem this time, vs the dirtdrop /
Noodles on the grey one.

Did you save your wheels when you upgraded your current bike?

[RBW] Re: Platypus 2021 Nooooo

2020-11-07 Thread velomann
Keep your dream wheelset plan. But in the meantime go online and order a
cheap stop-gap wheelset because if the wheels are what's keeping you from
riding the only Platypus outside the Riv showroom that's just sad. Then
when you get the good wheels you'll appreciate the bike even more because
the great ride quality will be even better, and you'll have a backup set or
you can sell the budget wheels on this forum ;-)

[RBW] Running a Mark's rack/basket....AND a handlebar bag?!?!?!

2020-11-07 Thread Ben Mihovk
Hey all!
I recently set up my Atlantis with a Mark's rack and medium Walk zip-tied
to it. I double strutted the rack and have the Irish strap connecting the
tombstone to the bars (Chocos).

I have an x-small saddle sack that I love and was offered a matching one at
a great price. I love the way the x-small sack looks/fits on my handlebars,
but I'm having some serious issues figuring out how to strap the tombstone
for support while having a handlebar bag.

One solution I might have is to strap the tombstone to the headtube
horizontally. I did it a minute ago and looped the Irish strap a bunch of
times and tightened it up. Is this good enough for supporting the rack if
the tange fails? Will the strap on the frame rub off the paint or top/clear
coat?

Any ideas on how to have both a Mark's rack and x-small handlebar bag are
welcome.

For what it's worth...I don't plan on ever exceeding the 4 pound
recommendation on the rack. I've used it to carry my 3 pound laptop and
charger (with a Captain Hook), to grab a 3 pound bag of groceries, etc...I
may push it to a six pack of beer, but I have a rear rack and panniers if I
need to carry anything heavy.

Thanks!
Ben

Patrick,

You're right. I had forgotten the first green ones were canti. For some
reason had it burned in my brain mine was sidepull. Just checked some old
photos. Nope. Canti mounts. Looks like I was using V brakes for most of the
time.

Wonder if it was because the Tektro long sidepulls weren't available yet? I
can't run tires over 40mm and fenders on mine now. Would love to run 42 to
45 with fenders. But am so used to this bike don't want to move it on and
start over with another one. Not that it matters right now as the only bike
getting ridden is the Clem L.

I had a first edition Sam, all green with no cream or white,
pre-double-top-tubes, and with cantilever brakes. Orange and sidepulls
obviously came afterward.

Why did Rivendell start using calipers on the Sam? Cantilevers are a
natural for this, for wider tires and fender clearance, especially as (I
think) the later designs accommodated wider tires than the first ones.

Re: [RBW] Re: Plenty of clearance under Medium Saddlesack

2020-11-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. It's an original issue Flite, but recovered (the original cover
wore out and when I removed it the padding came with it, so I glued nice,
thick brown leather over the plastic base. It looks very nice, and it feels
very comfortable by the universal test that I don't feel it or think about
it when I ride.

The bag is attached with Velo Orange clamp-on loops.

Nice tho' the bag is, I hope Stephen Bilenky comes through in his promised
1-month time for the new rear rack.

[RBW] Re: Wolbis Slugstone Build

2020-11-07 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Whimsy. You love a dose of whimsy in your builds and so do I! Yay for this
really whimsical Hillibike. You’re brightening the trails right up - in fact,
you’d likely be plenty visible to the hunters in big game season. Don’t try it,
though...

[RBW] Re: Platform pedal recommendations

2020-11-07 Thread Ryan M.
I've had bad luck with some mks pedals so years ago I started switching to
DMR Vault pedals. I really like them for a flat pedal especially when out
on the mtb trails. I also got a pair of Diety Tmac on a bike purchase and
those pedals have been really great too. Both of these have bigger
platforms than the VIP thin grippy pedals that Riv once sold...not sure if
they still do.

Re: [RBW] Sam Hillborne vintage

2020-11-07 Thread EricP
Yes, I believe it was first green, then orange, solid color. Had a green
one. It's possible they were both available for a while. Then it was the
blue with white/cream headtube option. Still sidepull brakes. And double
top tubes on the big sizes. That's the model I still have. Believe the next
batch after that went to canti. Really wish I had waited for that version.
But of course had no idea it was in the works.

[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-07 Thread Mark Roland
True, the last couple batches o' bikes were from the Hillibike line, which
does have the longest wheelbases of all the Rivs, and one variation is a
step through. But i'm not convinced about the "more mainstream" and some
kind of relief from "insanely long chain stays."

Right now you can't really buy ANY bicycles from Rivendell other than a
couple of models, and *only* in the smallest size. I think part of the
reason for this is that the company has built up its dealer network,
including and particularly Blue Lug.

Also the latest batch of Sams is back to canti/v-brakes, which many people
seem to prefer. And of course that golden orange color and the classic mink
blue! In terms of the chain stays, I presume those are where they are due
to the bike's position in the line-up. But I would not be surprised if,
like the Platypus (also now canti), got a touch of elongation in that zone
this go round, since they are siblings. I suspect most people want the
company's most popular model, and trust them to equip it with a suitable
chain stay length.

Not that this particularly matters--they seem to sell out of just about
every model rather quickly these days, which is a good thing, and is their
business model--similar to Acorn bags, where customers eagerly anticipate
the next batch release, and line up virtually around the block. Come to
think of it, that is how the brewery across the street from me operates,
too (except non-virtually).

[RBW] Re: Wolbis Slugstone Build

2020-11-07 Thread Mark Roland
Thanks guys. Yes, stable in a good way, planted and naturally following
your inputs, but not overly gyroscopically stable where you need to wrestle
the bike to change the line. So far nimble enough for my admittedly
somewhat tame single track needs--though it is currently big game season
and my local favorite trail spots are off limits at the moment. Truly one
of the most fun bikes to ride, ever.
