Rivendell, Crust, and bike brands of that size all operate on a budget that
doesn't allow any significant inventory - pre-sales and ensuring batches
are sold swiftly is key to keeping the budget balanced

This just in! Bar was originally 76 cm, I trimmed it 4 or 5 times, now
it's 54 cm and almost narrow enough. But because of the bulge to 31.8, the
levers can't move inward any further, and I like the grips.

 Narrow is Nice!

Tumbleweed is about to get a batch of frames in and they don’t expect any more
to come in until next summer. Sourcing is getting tougher.

Even getting parts for appliance repairs is a pain. We need to get our washer
fixed and our repair guy says it’s crazy how hard it is to get any parts now.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cold Weather Gloves PSA

2020-11-13 Thread Ben Mihovk
I’d guess not very well in a heavy rain. People love the mitts for snow
activities, so I’m sure they’re okay for quick trips in light showers. But they
are leather shells and not seam sealed.

Honestly...if it’s cold enough to need these mitts, it’ll be snowing, not
raining.

The piggyback gloves would not be great in heavy rain either. I could see the
cloth portions getting wet quick and soaking through.

2020-11-13 Thread Mark Roland
Bikes are mostly out of stock everywhere. Riv is lucky to be getting semi
regular production runs shipped to them.

Still hard to find many parts, too.

Not sure what forum or thread, but I pointed out that Rivendell's business
model has been going this way--batch shipments of a single model, sell them
off, in comes the next batch--for a while. This is helped by the dealer
network, whereas a while back it was almost all web. Now I imagine Blue Lug
takes 25% right off the top, then the rest, then Riv.

More and more small production run companies are doing this; a good example
is Acorn Bags. They announce an upcoming release, and most everything is
sold through within a few hours of going live. My local brewery does the
same thing with their beers. You sell the stuff that doesn't cost a fortune
to sit on in the warehouse--parts, clothes, the odd frame here and
there--while you wait for the next container ship. Keeps better tabs on
your capital outlays, too. From outside appearances, it seems to be working
okay. I hope it is.

GoPro uses 3M VHB 4991 tape on their mounts. That would be plenty strong for a

Seriousness aside, I just had the original rear tire replaced -- I

and that massively heavy tire, this with the sealant in the new setup.

I also cut the bar from 76 cm to 57 cm, raised the saddle and shoved it

It's now fun to ride, though only if you keep "just ride" in mind; it's
not a bike to try to go fast on.

 Off for bosque ride.

Just rode it for an hour on dirt except for a mile or so of pavement. Bar
too low; need an upriser stem of about same length to get bar higher and a
bit closer. Higher and closer, the 54 cm will be pretty just-right, tho' my
left palm has always started tingling after 2 to 10 miles, depending on the
type of "anything-except-drop" bar. BUt after 11 miles, my palm is just
starting to tingle. I'll replace the stem, then if that does not suffice,
consider a bar with some fore/aft bend.

WTB Rangers (3") are quite nice! The outer knobs rub delicately on the
chainstays when I corner of hit a hard bump, but this is a beater, and I am
sure that those stays are not .4mm thick. Let 'em rub! The Rangers roll
relatively fast on pavement (sure, the gear is only 64" and the crankarms

[RBW] Monocog!!!

2020-11-13 Thread Patrick Moore
I want to compare the ineffable beauty of my new Monocog with that of
Leah's Platypus. Mine wins by a mile. I'm really serious.

I traded this for the 2003 26" wheel Curt Riv Road custom, so it's on topic.

Seriousness aside, I just had the original rear tire replaced -- I swear, 5
lb; the casing felt and looked like a car tire! -- so that both f and r are
WTB Rangers set up tubeless. The bike lost 2 lb from the tubes and that
massively heavy tire, this with the sealant in the new setup.

I also cut the bar from 76 cm to 57 cm, raised the saddle and shoved it
back, and flipped the stem "up". Far more comfortable, far easier to pedal
-- on the inaugural ride it felt like a 90" gear with a 135 mm crank on
flat tires with brakes dragging.

It's now fun to ride, though only if you keep "just ride" in mind; it's not
a bike to try to go fast on.

Off for bosque ride.

[RBW] Re: 1996 Riv All Rounder update

2020-11-13 Thread John in PDX
Shifting - have an 8-speed shimano bar end, and thats the intended end
result, to have 8-speed index in the rear. The vintage Deore XT hubs have
a 7 speed cassette, and don't think it can accept 8 speeds - maybe using a
cut down 10 speed cassette. I've tried it in index mode and it seems to
work on the 7 speed, except needing to use two clicks on one of the lower
cogs. What I've read is Sram is compatible with Shimano index wise.

On Riv mountain frames, wonder how many were made and how different they
might be from the All Rounder. Sloping top tube makes sense, maybe
slightly more relaxed front geometry?

[RBW] Re: My new 26" wheeled drop bar Atlantis

2020-11-13 Thread Ray
That's a clever trick with the TRP levers. I have a set waiting in the
wings for a future build that I had resigned to using cantilevers with but
I'll keep that in mind when the day comes. I don't know that I would trust
myself to risk damaging such a nice pair of levers, but I'll certainly
consider it lol. Glad to hear it's working well for you.

Lovely bike by the way. I'm a big fan of the 26'' Atlantis as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: Albatross and Choco riders

2020-11-13 Thread Pete P

I first tried upright h’bars on my older Atala bike. Just to see if it

would work for me. I bought Albatross bars and it was a revelation!

So on my Atlantis I ditched my noodle drop bars and chose the Choco

bars - just for variety. I like both of these. (I won’t go back to those

now uncomfortable drop bars).

They both have their plusses and minuses. The Albatross are wider and

Go through the doorway with more caution. The Choco bar doesn’t rise

up as much but the position on the curves is a favorite of mine. You can’t
go wrong with either one!

Mark, I'm not sure if you already ordered one or not, but Riv has two
headset tools in stock right now... I ordered one yesterday, excited to get
it and use it!

 Mark,

I managed to snag one on the second round of these -- it is a truly
lovely tool that works extremely well. I had a home made headset press
 made
with large washers, nuts, and all thread, which was functional but
 finicky.
It is now at my local co-op -- I donated it. I've used the Stein on two
headsets so far...Wow! It is worth the wait. Sooner or later supply
will catch up with demand, or you'll just happen to be on the Riv site
 when
they get restocked or juat after (which is what happened to me).

[RBW] Cold Weather Gloves PSA

2020-11-13 Thread Ben Mihovk
Hey everyone!
I've brought these up in another thread, but thought I'd share again for
the good of the group.

Raber Gloves are made in Winnipeg...and the only reason I can find them as
far south as Nebraska is that my favorite LBS gets in an order every
winter. I have links to the gloves below where you can buy them from my
favorite local place, but if you see these gloves for sale in person or on
another site and you need good gloves, buy them.

Garbage Mitts
http://www.ponderosacyclery.com/store/garbagechopper-mitt
These are insulated leather gloves with cuff that is stretchy, snug, and
comfy. I wore them on my ride today (18 degrees) and did not even need wool
liner gloves. I think I could go below zero with these gloves + wool
liners. They're not 100% windproof, but I'd say maybe 85-90% windproof.
They're called Garbage Mitts because trash collectors in the Great White
North use them.

Piggyback Gloves
http://www.ponderosacyclery.com/store/raber-gloves
I love these gloves for cool weather. Low 50s down to mid 30s maybe. With a
wool liner, lower (but you can't beat the Garbage Mitts for low 30s and
down). Just little easier for shifting and braking than the mitts.

I'd happily answer any questions you have about them. Just thought I'd
share my favorite accessories with the group. I could easily see Rivendell
selling these (if it ever got cold enough in the Bay Area).

Have a great weekend!

[RBW] Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-13 Thread True Golden
Speaking of Sam Hillbourne's
how does one determine the manufacture date?

I'm guessing through the serial number.

I think my pumpkin orange with side pull brakes is a 2018 model but how do I
verify that?
