Re: [RBW] Re: Wow! What's going on with Rivendell caps going for $$$

2020-11-21 Thread Mark Roland
They may have zero interest, but if they bid and nobody bids higher, they
are obliged to buy it. If they don't, they could lose their access to eBay
auctions.
In terms of auction outings, that's a tough one. Obviously you are not
going to advertise an auction of an item you are interested in bidding on.
Then, if you are not interested, and post a link, now another list member
who was hoping to snag it may have to contend with more bidders. In this
case I think it was more of a novelty, can-you-believe check this out kinda
thing. Curious how you were able to eavesdrop on these two people who bid
with no intention of wanting the item.

?? The company still sells various Riv-branded hats and tees, as well as a
mug, buttons, stickers, patches, and posters. These items are often out of

Re: [RBW] Re: Wow! What's going on with Rivendell caps going for $$$

2020-11-21 Thread Nathan F
I take this auction and similar, like a used mug that went for $55 a month
or so ago, as proof Riv needs to revive some of their accessory lines.
People want the stuff (myself included) and I know the margin is there to
make the endeavor worthwhile.

cycling cap, and started yesterday (Nov 13th). The bids quickly added
 up
and currently, a full 6 days before the auction ends, we're already at
 $51
 plus $3.95 for shipping.

Looking at the cap in question, I don't see anything special about
it. It's cotton, its proceeds will not benefit any charity, and it's
*used *(albeit in almost-new condition). Why are people willing to
bid this cap up so high? And more importantly, am *I* now slightly
wealthier because I have a stack of similar used Rivendell caps in
different colors, including this mustard-yellow version? :)

Your backstory was a joy to read, thank you for sharing - I'm pretty in awe
of your long-term connection and feel like a total noob by comparison (been
aware of Bridgestone/Rivendell for a long time as an avid cyclist since the
early 90's but only really interested in the past five or so). I also love
seeing bikes that have been serving their owners for decades, particularly
when that bike is an A-R!

[RBW] Re: "Cross-training" for cycling: walking? Also: Inexpensive but large and practical backpack?

2020-11-21 Thread Ray Varella
Walking is great, moving around in any way is really good for you.
Moving heavy objects at full exertion a few times per week will keep your
core really strong.

Exercises that isolate muscle groups might make you look good but they
won’t strengthen your core the way “functional training” will.

I work in heavy freight and I get all the heavy lifting I need by moving
ungodly items in numerous ways.

I think a lot about keeping my core strong without injuring myself.

When I retire my routine will include walking and cycling.
While on my walks I will climb things I come across, be it playground
structures, boulders or trees and stairs. Using arm strength to pull
yourself up is great for balance and strength, plus you are outside and
will avoid the monotony of repetitious exercise.

I would incorporate some form of heavy lifting.
Kettle bells are great but if you aren’t careful you can tear shoulder
muscles.

I would buy a tire from a piece of heavy equipment.
The act of flipping it will use your legs, shoulders, arms and stomach
muscles.
I would drill a hole in it and fix an eye bolt sandwiched with large
washers.
I would make a harness so I could pull it both moving forward and
backwards.

I would also likely invest in one of those heavy ropes.
The important thing is to have a routine that you don’t become bored with.
Being outdoors and finding ways to keep moving should help with the
boredom.

Speaking with little authority outside of the fact that it is the only bike
I've ever sold and I regret it, the Sam Hillborne can handle it, no worries.

[RBW] Re: "Cross-training" for cycling: walking? Also: Inexpensive but large and practical backpack?

2020-11-21 Thread Jesse Stoddard
For heavier loads you definitely want the majority of the weight directed
into your lower body. External frame packs haven't been surpassed in terms
of weight transfer; see if you can find a nice example on the secondhand
market. Dana Designs are commonly held as the pinnacle of external pack
design, but a Kelty or similar would probably suffice as long as it can be
adjusted to fit your frame correctly.

I know I should buckle down and do some exercises to strengthen my core
(well, pushups do that, but also my shoulders and arms, as well as do more

sufficiently, I'd rather walk; whence my question about walking and core

As someone else pointed out, it's probably not the best therapy to

[RBW] Re: cold weather winter riding tips

2020-11-21 Thread Ian Dickson
I used to live in Fairbanks, and it’s not hard to dress for anything down
to about -20. If it’s in the 30s, you don’t need much. Light fleece gloves,
helmet liner, fleece vest does it for me. You want to feel a bit cold when
you start out. If it’s much colder than that, sporthill makes nice stuff
geared towards runners and xc skiers that works well on a bike.

Yeah, I feel life these tires get overlooked a bit. I have the 700x40s on
