[RBW] Changing tires on Cliffhanger rims

2020-12-03 Thread Fullylugged
My local friend with a Clem L asked for some help today. She was having
trouble getting the Continental Contact Speed tires off the cliffhanger rim
wheels of her Clem L. When I took a turn at it, I was surprised at how
difficult it is to get a lever under the tire bead. Looking at he Velocity
page, I noticed that they are advertised as close fitting and that a thin
rim tape must be used. The wheels shipped from Walnut Creek with that rim
tape so I kept looking.

I noticed the center of the rim track was depressed from the edges, so when
I squeezed the tire so that the beads were over the center, all of a
sudden, there was space for a tire lever to get in and work. They were
tight to start with but once started, they come off like any other tire.
I've not ridden Cliffhangers but have noticed that they are mentioned here
pretty often.

Am I the last to discover this? :)

[RBW] FS: WoolyWarm 6-button sweater, size Large

2020-12-03 Thread Christopher Cote
I just received my WW 6 six button sweater, and while it's a fantastic
piece, it's just not for me. Rather than pester Rivendell with a return, I
figured I'd offer it up for sale here first, in case someone missed out on
them. I would say that Riv's sizing advice is spot on. I usually wear a
medium, ordered a large. It's a snug fit, with plenty of horizontal
stretchiness for comfort. Tried on once, tag still attached, briefly in my
pet and smoke free home. The price is $130, and I'll eat the shipping
(continental USA only!) and paypal fees. Local (socially distanced) pickup
near Portland, MAINE possible. Please email me off list. Thanks!

2020-12-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Well, the snow melted by the time I got out after noon, and just as well as
I had to drop something off downtown for my daughter, so rode the new
Matthews road bike.

But interesting to hear that others' favored puttering/cruising gears are
much like my own; again, 65"/15 t now, but probably will want 61"/16 t if I
ever *do* get to ride in some snow. I do like 72 to 76" for pavement,
though, at least on a "planey" bike, though I am not endorsing any theory
of "planing."

2020-12-03 Thread i
$2500

Why this price? I dont know, I spit balled it. I'm reluctant to sell this
bike but I also don't really need it. It takes time to pack a bike, time I
don't have, time is expensive to me right now.

It's really fun and rides well but..yeah reducing what is in my stable
would be nice

Wheels are from the Clem Smith complete, 27.5. Thunderburt tires.
Nitto filet stem, though maybe I keep it and swap for something else. Wavie
bars. Nitto S65 seatpost.
SiLVER crank 38/24. Sunrace shifter, just for the back Deore derailleur.
9speed cassette. Shimano DXR v-brakes. Sunrace brake levers. Seat? Not sure
I am including that.

I think I covered it all?

Rack and bag not included, neither are bottle cages.

So yes, $2500. Seems like a fine price for a bike. Better yet, come get it
from me in Ann Arbor.

Thanks!

Lol, Lester. It is just absolutely dreamy. I took it for another 11 miles

Betty Foy was made for me (before the Clems ruined it for me with their
comfy long wheelbases) - the Platypus is superior! Riv’s new LWB philosophy

[RBW] Re: What is your favorite all-round "just ride" cruising gear?

2020-12-03 Thread George Schick
My SS MTB is set up with a 60" gear and 165mm crank arms. Seems to be just
fine most of the time though there are instances where a bit larger gear
would be preferred (downhill slopes, tail winds, etc.). I've thought about
bumping it up a notch, but I don't want to do that in favor of the 60" for
hill climbing and riding into headwinds.

My single speeds tend to be in the mid to upper 60s, but what I ride on
multi-gear bikes tend to be in the mid to low 60s.
I think I read somewhere that the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps rode fixed
60" gears.

Omaha is not mountainous, but it's way too hilly for a single speed (for my
weak legs, anyway!). But...my favorite gear on my bike (42/26 ring with
11/32 cassette, 175mm crank, 700c wheels) is 66.7 gear inches. If I lived
in a flatter town or was a stronger rider and was looking for a single
speed, that's what I'd shoot for.

[RBW] Re: What is your favorite all-round "just ride" cruising gear?

2020-12-03 Thread Chris L
When I ride a multi-gear bike, I tend to ride it as a single-speed, only
changing gears when I really have to. I don't remember the exact gear
inches but err on the lower side, probably around the 60'ish gear-inch
range.

On the rare occasions when I get out on a long stretch, even a very modest
downslope ends up in my spinning out my 90'ish gear-inch top end. Straight
and level riding bores me, so I rarely do that and mainly stick to slower
riding with lots of twists and turns around the neighborhood's streets and
greenbelt sidewalks.

My single speed is either 59 or 63 gear inches. Its a little low in that
I can spend 90% of my time sitting when ride flatlands locally, but more

Re: [RBW] Reverse Levers with Linear-Pull Brakes?

2020-12-03 Thread Marc Irwin
If those are long pull (for standard caliper brakes) they won't work
without a travel agent added to the V-brake. I use regular MTB levers with
interrupter levers on my Hunq and had to add the travel agent when I went
to V brakes. The travel agent is a PITA to set up, works fine, looks a
little clunky but I am really glad I did it. The linear pull brakes have
much better stopping power than the canti's I used before.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB Nitto Big Back Rack - LARGE

2020-12-03 Thread Leah Peterson
Thanks, Dorothy! Yes, I can get it new, was hoping to get a used one to try to
save some dollars. I still may do just that, BUTplot twist.

Does anyone remember reading Grant’s Blahg in September? I knew I had read
something about a rear rack in his writings, and I found it this morning. Since
it’s not working out with the used market, maybe I should wait for the new rear
rack Grant mentions here. I’m attaching a screenshot for anyone else who is
interested. I highlighted the projects that I am interested in purchasing.

Re: [RBW] Leah’s Rivendell Raspberry Platypus

2020-12-03 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Peech, oh, it’s inevitable that the scratches will come. I hope they come
in noble ways and not from dumb things like Leah lifting it onto the van’s
bike rack and scraping the length of tubing as the frame slides against the
bar. (See my son’s little grilver Clem!) I think if I ever feel bad about
the beausage, I will just pop over to Ana’s (PurpleRiv on Instagram) page.
She is a model for the rest of us! Grant has praised her for taking her
custom everywhere - like it’s a jalopy and not a fussy custom!
