Re: [RBW] What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-21 Thread Jason Fuller
I should really read all of the posts in here before I write my own
thoughts, because any insight I'm about to offer has probably been repeated
ad nauseum already. And yet, here I go anyway.

Firstly, I live in a mountainous area and single speed doesn't really make
sense here. And yet, I've had a couple, and I've also had a couple fixed
gear bikes and there is a pretty thriving fixed gear scene here (of which I
am not even remotely a part of, but I appreciate that it exists).

When I ride any of my geared bikes, I can't imagine having a single speed,
because I use the heck out of the full range I have available to me - it
doesn't seem to matter how big the range is, I'm going to use all of it.
And yet, for reasons I can't explain, when I ride a single speed, it's
pretty much fine that I don't have other gears. You just sort of put it out
of your head that different gears exist on some bicycles, and removing the
thought of shifting from your riding is a noticeable and enjoyable
simplification - now you just pedal, steer, and brake. Of course, you also
strain to grind up some hills and hope your knees don't explode, so it's
not all rainbows, but removing the complexity of worrying about what gear
you should be in has a surprisingly profound effect.

Of course, the limitations often outweigh this benefit, particularly if you
carry varying amounts of load - so I don't have a SS bike anymore :D

2021-04-21 Thread Roberta
Thanks. All so interesting. When I had the Raleigh for such a short amount
of time, I also found it so much fun, but I couldn't explain why.

CapNMike--were you on the G customer ride a year before they moved? I
was there and if you live in those parts, those are MOUNTAINS to me, with
only the beginning of the ride rolling hills. I am impressed.

Eric--Philadelphia downtown and south would be a good place to do
fixed/SS. I notice a huge number of fixed/SS gear commuters. I love the
shades of grey in your photo, and go over that bridge to NJ's Wiggins Park
often, one of my favorite rides. Certainly on the other spectrum of the
Appa, so that probably is why Will suggested it.

Perhaps it's in the future for me. It's nice to know so many have a truly
different bike that you a different thrill than geared bikes.

2021-04-21 Thread Fullylugged
My 1995 Rivendell Road is still the best bike I've ever owned and my
favorite to ride. Its been repainted and has a new wheelset, but it goes on
comfortable mile after mile with quick but not quirky handling and great
feel.

[RBW] Re: For 22 years I've continually been surprised and repeated thrilled by my Road Custom

2021-04-21 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch

Very good description. You stated the Starck was better in "fit, feel, and
above all, the energetic response to pedaling input". The 'fit' seems to
imply the cockpit dimensions are closer to your body than the others.
The 'feel' seems to imply the frame geometry is better for you.

Any idea of what gives the Starck the energetic feel?? Is the frame
stiffer than others or more flexible and 'planes' better?

[RBW] Re: Pass and Stow recommendation

2021-04-21 Thread Clark Fitzgerald
I have the 3 rail, and it's wonderful. The platform is a bit longer in
front than the 5 rail. I found it works well for strapping a backpack.

I'd be willing to sell mine, as I'm not using it much. It has a Schmidt
Edelux II internally wired. Make me an offer. You can see it in this

2021-04-21 Thread Leah Peterson
I can’t tell you how good it is to see these bikes with my own eyes. It’s
beautiful and regal - a perfect match for Emily. I really love how you set it
up and I can practically feel your joy through the photo. Please don’t hesitate
to delight us all with more photos!

So, let me see, here. Emily, Joyce, Junie (you all haven’t met her yet but I
hope she’ll post here one day) and me have all been riding Clem Ls before our
Platys. Emily and I have our Platys and we both have the same adjectives. This
bike is so pretty and so FAST, compared to a Clem. Clems are gems and all, but
I really am enjoying the zippier, lither Platy.

I hope you have the day off and can get lots of time riding your new Platypus,
Emily! Tell Greg to get his camera. 

I know that one dealer in Canada and Golden Pliers (OR? WA?) got their
deliveries. Analog Cycles (VT) hasn't gotten theirs yet. Not sure that
helps with your question, but I'd expect dealer orders would be the first
ones out the door, followed by non-prepped frames.

I'm looking forward to everyone's build and ride report.

[RBW] Re: which Tange headset is the one to get?

2021-04-21 Thread Ian A
+1 to Garth's recommendation. I replaced at Shimano 105 with the Tange
Levin CDS (26.4) beacause I needed a headset with low stack. The Tange is
inexpensive, visually elegant and unassuming and it adjusts easily and
works perfectly. The one I have has been on the bike for four years now and
seems as good as new.

I rather like steel headsets myself and on one bike have a 1" Tange Levin
CDS headset. It comes in silver or black. It tends to go unnoticed because
it "just works" and does it well.

[RBW] Re: Pass and Stow recommendation

2021-04-21 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Points made regarding bar placement vs. load location probably explains why
I found no discernable handling difference with 25-30lb passenger in a stem
mounted mini child seat (regardless whether with ChocoMoose, Jones loop, or
BullMoose) but definitely felt the handling difference even with a
moderately loaded Surly front rack on my Mega 65cm Clem and the original
Bosco set-up. I haven't actually had a front load on my Clem since trading
away the Surly Rack but had been rethinking things again after recent use
with a Wald large 139 basket on another bike (where I mix and matched Wald
hardware from their giant delivery basket since I was able to find a
mounting set complete with adjustable legs and the desired bar brackets.)

Anyway, I guess my point is that although my current set-up works fine, if
not a bit wobbly because of the long drop from bar to basket and my mods to
make it all work, I've been thinking how the Pass and Stow would likely be
more rigid and also eliminate the need for bar bracket's altogether (which
would play nice with some of my bar swapping tendencies that have begun to
resurface after a couple years of practicing contentment.

This thread prompted me to quickly check the Pass sight for more
accurate #'s and at $170 extra for my desired add ons ($140 for 3rail deck
and $30 for the sidepull yoke) I'm clearly in 'why not just get a
separate/second/dedicated rack?' territory if needing more than one front
racked bike. Guess my thinking is more in line that a one rack investment
that could easily be adapted to go from one bike to another might be worth
it if it eliminates the rest of the front racks and baskets I've been
previously messing around with.

Best,
Brian Cole

When it comes down to it for bikes, it's all about the "feel", some have it
some don't. Keep the ones that do and move on from the rest.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: silver thumb shifter mounts

2021-04-21 Thread Eric Marth
Hi Joyce -- Soma has IRD thumb shifter mounts in stock in black. I believe
these are the same as what Riv offers, though I could be wrong.

https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/56020-ird-power-ratchet-thumb-shifter-set-3885?category=961

They also have a full set in silver which includes the levers. They're a
bit spendy but if you gotta have em you could remove the levers and save
them for a future build.
