2021-05-25 Thread Peter Adler
There's no rack/decaleur link in the main interface of the French version,
either.

The site's been redone sometime during our Year of Plague, to be more
modernish - much shinier, a lot more Javascript. It's possible (and I would
daresay likely) that whatever bunch of web designers M. Berthoud hired to
do his redesign got careless about the links, and whoever was checking off
on their work didn't follow through all the links to make sure everything
was publicly visible.

I suppose somebody like me ought to drop them a note about that...

Nice! What size tires are those? I was measuring my circa 2000 AR and I think
the fattest tire I could fit in the fork would be about 1.7” wide. Pretty
narrow based on what I ride now. I was hoping for around 2” tires. Maybe a 650B
conversion at some point down the road?

2021-05-25 Thread Peter Adler
Well, there's always this one, from the Euro-Asia link David posted above:

[image: rackforgb704andgb604mounted_1392_detail.jpg]

I am mindful of this at the moment because I returned from David's and my
mutual bike kitchen* with a used GB 704, without realizing that's what it
was. I didn't see the rack, because I didn't know I needed it; now I'll
need to go back tomorrow to do a hard-target search for it, because
although they still feature the bags that require the racks, GB no longer
lists racks or decaleurs of any kind on their site - a troubling
development. Euro-Asia
 may
have inventory, so any shop with an E-A account can order it; but it's not
clear that there's any new product coming in from France.

Maybe Monsieur Gugliamana will get some more business out of this, if
making up for the inconsistencies of *constructeurs* is a trade he wants.
And I do feel I should mention that the GB racks, clever as they are, are
also butt-ugly.

TL; DR version: I paid $75 for a much scruffier-looking, smaller GB bag
without the required rack, which may no longer be available. So Joe's price
was a crazy good deal.

Re: [RBW] Platy front derailleur with Riv wide-low double (39x28)?

2021-05-25 Thread KenP
  Tom,
in DC area bike coops Phoenix or Velocity have used parts. They sell
old parts inexpensively. You go and look through their bin.
But I had trouble with a front triple myself. Even after going to a
shop. Then I bought an FD off Ebay that was spec'ed for 30 39 52.
Finally bending it down to match the profile of the large ring helped.
And I took a strong grinder to the back part of the cage so it would go
closer to the big ring . The steel is quite tough.Crank is 30, 38,
52. For your double with experimenting You can probably make whatever you
find work.

It is package deal. Mandatory price per rules of the forum $1000 US or best

Re: [RBW] big Atlantis-like bike

2021-05-25 Thread Ben Mihovk
I have a 59cm Atlantis with double top tube. I like DTT better if they're
curved the way mine is rather than running parallel to the actual top tube.
A very small part of me doesn't like how the curved tube gives the bike a
decidedly "beach cruiser" look, because the bike is a billion times more
versatile and sporty than that.

I'm pretty sure the second top tube on my bike is not structurally
necessary, but overall I'm all about the look.

2021-05-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Garth is right, you can use a road derailleur (or any other) and simply
raise it high enough to clear the stay. I've done than many times with no
shifting problems.

[RBW] Re: Platy front derailleur with Riv wide-low double (39x28)?

2021-05-25 Thread RichS
Tom,

Have you tried a Shimano 9 speed Sora? Available as a double or triple. I
have one of these (double) on a frame and it works fine. Friction shifting
7 cogs with a 46x34 in the front. Mine is shimmed but so far no issues. The
number of front and rear derailers on the market today is indeed staggering.

To Pam's point I'm sure others on the list can point you to some vintage
derailers that will work for you.

Best,
Rich in ATL

[RBW] Re: Platy front derailleur with Riv wide-low double (39x28)?

2021-05-25 Thread Garth
Tom it helps us readers to know what "doesn't seem to work", as in how ?
The road FD's that I've set up with 24/26 low rings have all shifted
brilliantly.

If the FD is hitting the frame raise it until it does clear, then test it
by riding around wherever you are. The FD doesn't need to be as close to
the big ring as "suggested". Everything of the manual drivetrain lends
itself to endless creativity.

This will help you understand all the various FD designs.

trip from east-to-west in the opposite direction. A bit of a new
perspective on the trails along the C Towpath in Maryland and the Great
 Allegheny Passage in Pennsylvania.
I was on my Sam Hillborne, which is my dedicated touring bike, mostly.
It serves me very well for this sort of thing. I have a Homer Hilsen I use
for mixed-surface riding day trips and love it. It could probably handle
touring, but I suspect the slightly stouter Hillborne is more reliable for
 multi-day loads.
We chose to go a bit early, the end of April, and were met with a
variety of weather conditions, from sunny (even hot) days to cold (down to
freezing one night) with a bit of rain thrown in for fun. We were prepared
for it so the cooler temps were welcomed.
The benefits - especially this year when many more folks will
undoubtedly be out riding these trails - were fewer trail users and more
available campsites and fewer bugs along the Potomac River. (Not that is
usually a big problem for us, even in the summer.)
My Flickr trip album of the trip is chock full unfortunately - for my
own memories - so I apologize in advance. This time around, however, I
tried not to duplicate photos of the numerous and more recognizable
landmarks for the GAPCO, which I have done before.

[RBW] FS- Winter Cycles frame 55 cm

2021-05-25 Thread Thomas Blak
I wanted Eric to build me a fast version of my Rivendell Sam Hillborne but
with disc brakes and thru axles. It isn't exactly what I wanted so it needs
to go.

For your consideration a custom steel hand made lugged frame with hand
carved lugs. Modern design elements such as disk brakes and thru axles
compliment this frame.

Designed for 650b wheels, 42 mm wide.

Measurements

55 cm top tube ctc

52 cm seat tube ctc

16 cm head tube (actual)

43 cm chain stay ctc

Designed with a 1” fork to keep the aesthetics.

27.2 seat tube

Stem 120 mm, 26.0 bar clamp

Paid $5500 for frame, fork, headset and stem, selling for best reasonable
offer. It is package deal. Mandatory price per rules of the forum $1000 US
or best reasonable offer.

It has been ridden 40 km and there are two imperfections. There is a small
chip at the bottom bracket, and I have touch up paint. There is a second
imperfection at the top the hand made plated stem.

After two weeks if a reasonable offer is made it will go the highest
bidder. I have tried putting a price and nothing, so let the market dictate
the price.

BEST Reasonable offer, please get this out of my house!

Beautiful bikes! A little OT but I wish someone would collect all these
photos and print them on playing cards. I love staring at Rivs and how
everyone sets them up. Love to look at all the configurations of bags,
racks, lights, saddles, bars.

I'm not from there but my friend lived there and went to Cycle Symphony in
Adamsburg. Rob is the owner and built my rear wheel w/a Phil hub.

Thanks, Pam. I'm in the DC area (Herndon, VA) but it's spring and all
mechanics are booked. I'll ask Tim/Daniel at Bikes at Vienna when I can
get there. I'm trying to do this build all by myself as a project. I

[RBW] Re: Seat bag security

2021-05-25 Thread Pam Bikes
I've never had anyone steal my bags or stuff out of my bike anywhere I've
ever parked it - except once. I was at Target on Black Friday and I think
some kids stole my stuff - helmet, multitool, tire levers. I've parked all
over but mostly for short amount of time while I'm in a store or
restaurant. I never park for an extended period of time - probably less
than an hour. I have Sackville bags.

I also have some releasable zip ties -but only you know they are
releasable. Want to try them? Put them on, sit near your bike and observe
a while. Let me know and I'll send you some. I had to buy a bag of 100.
So I have plenty.

Yes I will. Frame, 2 forks in matching powdercoat, custom racks and 2 sets

My goal in posting here first is to get it to someone who would appreciate

locally to someone that is just looking for a bike.

 Josh,

A riding group in Pittsburgh, although yet to declare a start to the
usual Tuesday rides beginning in April. They've met at the coffee shop
on N. Highland Ave. in Highland Park. All sorts and levels of riders.
Neither a lycra drop ride, nor a tweed, sandal and sock ride either. All
 of
the above. The group's been around so long that it's not absurd to be
called out by bystanders far from the start point as we ride through
 neighborhoods.

Links to maps of many of the routes in and around town there, length
varies based on available light from April to end of September. I've
enjoyed participating in the rides since moving here in 2000 and have been
on all of the mapped routes.

[RBW] Re: My recent "CO-GAP" 7-day trip

2021-05-25 Thread ascpgh
Pat, all I can add since I've not self-supported the GAP-CO trip is that
some services may be less extensive after October. For the GAP portion,
October is a highlight for foliage, decreased bugs and the best chance of
the year's months for a dry ride. A bigger concern on the C, even days
following rain. Mud is a thing on the C The western section can be
avoided (on the other side of the canal) on the Western Maryland Rail Trail
 which is 26 miles of
pavement. It is a different organization with a smaller scope of mileage
to maintain but has a higher expectation of the trail surface. You'll
appreciate it if raining as you close in on Cumberland.

The fine limestone bed of the GAP is consistent and does make a slurry in
downpours, I've ridden to Ohiopyle with half being an utter downpour, the
latter tapered off and was wet. With an adequate flap on my Rambouillet's
fender my drivetrain feet and BB were spotless other than incidental spray
from the front fender exit. I would recommend fenders for rides on this
route if just to keep the flung dust from the front wheel from the constant
contamination of your drivetrain. More so when wet. Many services have a
hose with which you can do a field expedient drivetrain ungunking. A water
bottle with nozzle can suffice if it's bad. Choose and have chain lube you
are familiar with using. What goes for weeks at home might not hold through
lunch on the trail.

The use the GAP trail gets is undoubtable now and you should be OK.
Merchants aren't in business to miss sales and there are lots of riders
after the end of September. The Facebook page is very active. I submitted a
large tree down across the trail between Duquesne and McKeesport (20 mile
mark for me) on an out and back century. It was cut and removed by the time
I passed it again, 60 miles of riding later.

Services were more effected by the pandemic than usual seasons. I rode more
on the GAP last year to get isolated, it's part of the attraction for me
but it kept away many of the through or long distance riders. On nice days
and weekends you will be able to gauge your proximity to access points and
services by the "local" users. They will walk their dogs, run and leisurely
pedal cruisers several miles from the parking areas and become your signal
that town is near.

Re: [RBW] big Atlantis-like bike

2021-05-25 Thread Matthew P
I like the double top tubes, even on not-super-large bikes that may or may
not need them, like Jason's Bombadil (love it).
I also like the Hunq diagatube, even if it would require 2 frame bags
instead of 1 (but could be a good thing - separate the water bladder(s)
from the rest).
