Re: [RBW] Fattest Tire on a QB?

Holy Moly, a Paul Flatbed? Sorry for the semi-zombie revival, and thread
drift and all that, but how'd that Flatbed work for you, Jim? I've had one
forever, trot it out now and then, find it always cool, but kinda floppy.

[RBW] Re: Question for people who have ridden Compass/Rene Hearse tires

2021-06-18 Thread Philip Williamson
Excellent, Chris!
My 58mm G-One Speeds had some self-steer, where they’d try to climb the
crown of the road, or suddenly get grabbed by a crack in the asphalt. The
BQs you’re getting explain the physics of the runner, I think. I only
noticed it on a low-trail bike, and not all the time; high trail bikes
didn’t do that. It makes sense that low tire pressure causes or contributes.

I switched to RH 55mm knobbies, and haven’t noticed it again. I think the
less rubber area keeps the tire from steering the bike. On dirt, I never
noticed any of the self steer.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell SimpleOne

2021-06-18 Thread Montclair BobbyB

FOR SALE:

Selling my lightly used Rivendell SimpleOne. I purchased this frameset
from Rivendell (with BB and headset) and built it up as a
“multi-geared-single-speed”. It has a 20/22-tooth White Industries Dos Eno
dual freewheel in the rear, and Shimano 600 crankset with dual chainrings
(38/42-tooth). The SimpleOne has angled rear slide dropouts designed to
allow for multiple wheel positions without the need to adjust the brake
pads. The result: You have 4 separate gear ratio configurations to choose
from, one at a time (of course).

Overall condition is very good; only slightly worn-in. There are a few
minor nicks & wear marks where the green paint has worn down to underlying
primer; NO bare metal or rust; Honestly I’d call these “beausage” marks.
It’s a beautiful green and cream color combo. I’ve loved riding this bike,
but am seriously downsizing the stable, and I really haven’t ridden this
very much. The gearing combo gives you several options for different
terrain/riding style.

Bike Setup:

Frame: SimpleOne frameset (60cm)

Stem: Specialized stem 120mm reach

Handlebar: VO Grand Cru Ranndonneur bars 44cm wide

Brakes: Tektro canti brakes w/SunTour Superbe levers.

Front Dynamo Hub: Shimano DH-3N72 6v 3w 36h

Rear hub: Origin8 36h flip flop fixie/freewheel w/White Industries Dos Uno
20/22t freewheel and 17t fixed cog

Rims: Alex DM18 700c eyeletted rims w/straight gauge stainless spokes

Tires: Schwalbe Century 700c x 35c green whitewalls (great for on/off road)

Crank: Shimano 600 175mm with 42/38t chainrings

Saddle: Brooks B17 Narrow (like new, still needs breaking in)

B Eyc LED front light (included, not installed)

B 4D-lite plus w/standlight (included, not installed)

Price is $1200. If you know this bike, you know it rides like a dream.
This is ready to go, for day or night riding.

Pick up in Lambertville NJ / New Hope PA area; will drive up to 2 hours to
meet; potential option to deliver in New England area. Strongly prefer to
NOT ship.

Please contact me (Bobby) offline at montclairbob...@gmail.com
Thanks,
BB

Re: [RBW] Re: Question for people who have ridden Compass/Rene Hearse tires

2021-06-18 Thread Chris L
Andy,

Thanks for the clarification. I ordered both issues and look forward to
reading them and maybe re-subscribing.

Also, my Endurance casings had their first test today. I rode thru about
900 feet of grass and when I got back on pavement, I heard a clicking sound
from my front tire. I stopped and inspected it, seeing what looked like a
very small twig but which turned out to be a very small, very rusted
fishing hook, stuck directly into the center of the tread. I pulled it out
and finished my ride with no problems and hopefully it didn't even reach
the tube.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet tire clearance

2021-06-18 Thread Eric St. Mary
Thank you all for the helpful input. Sounds like I’ll be shopping for some
38s. I’m looking forward to seeing how it feels with some fatter tires.

It has the Shimano long reach brakes Riv sold back then. I had to deflate
it he Roly Polys since day 1, even with the brake release, to remove the
wheels. They do have a ton of clearance otherwise.

there's no way they'd fit under the fenders. Without fenders I'm guessing
that you could go up to 37/38's, but it might be tight. That frame was
built with side-pulls as the intended brake, therefore the brake bridge on
the rear is a little further down than other models. And I agree, of all
the bikes I've owned over the past 45+ years of "serious" cycling the Ram
is the best riding of the bunch. Wish I would have had it all along.

Re: [RBW] Re: Question for people who have ridden Compass/Rene Hearse tires

2021-06-18 Thread ascpgh

Chris, it's an article in issue 75 following the one about performance of
knobby tires.

I have been seeing the thickness of the issues does reflect more of Jan's
rides but as an engineer and bicyclist he cannot help letting the riding
become reporting on how the hardware handled things I like that perspective
and I have cached away blurbs from those several ride write-ups for my own
ends. I particularly like his realization about underbiking in this issue;
he doesn't like it and would enjoy a ride more if he had enough bike. I
apply this in reverse in that I don't want to ride a mountain bike for 6-8
hours so I ride where my 650B x 42 rules the terrain and I'm happy as a
result.

2021-06-18 Thread Patrick Moore
On my blue Ram, 32s (Kojak 1.35s which may have measured 31mm on Open Pros)
fit under SKS fenders with some squeezing at seatstay bridge, but
acceptable. I think that fenders take up about 5mm of tire size but I'd
guess that 37-38 might be the max.

[RBW] Re: FS: Bike Tools Suntour Park VAR Hozan Campy Stein more

2021-06-18 Thread David Hallerman

Hello and WOW!

I knew bike tools would sell, but not that quickly. Thank you, thank
you, thank you big time for all your responses. And to be honest, with
all the incoming email and messages, I might have, probably have, missed
one or two or three. If that was your message, I'm sorry. If the item
you want is still listed, please try again.

Of the 54 line items originally, there are only 11 left, listed below.
Again, photos are here, with pretty much just the remaining tools
pictured: https://photos.app.goo.gl/HMHjnepFaMBdCdeL9

Still available, and a few notes.
* Item #38, the Serotta fit tool and the small level it needs replaced.
I priced one of the same size online, and it's less than $2.
* Item #46, sleuthed by potential buyer RJL - this little 13/19mm wrench
came with Suntour cantilever brakes, like the XC Pro ones I installed
many years ago. Here's some more info:
https://restoringvintagebicycles.com/tag/suntour/
* Item #24, of all the items left, this is the one I'm most surprised
didn't sell yet. Item #51 is pretty nice too, and its price is not that
fixed.

Hi,

A bunch of tools for sale. Many are barely or never used. Those that

Questions quickly answered, and if you find a price too high, consider
making an offer. Prices include shipping, except in a few cases as
noted. With 54 items for sale, please also refer to items by their
number if you can.

Thanks for looking, replies off-list.

It's not exactly clear whether you want to run the fatter tires with or
without fenders. FWIW, I have a Ram of the same exact time period as yours
and I'm running 32mm Panaracers with fenders. I'd prefer to run 35's, but
there's no way they'd fit under the fenders. Without fenders I'm guessing
that you could go up to 37/38's, but it might be tight. That frame was

the rear is a little further down than other models. And I agree, of all

[RBW] Rambouillet tire clearance

2021-06-18 Thread Eric St. Mary

I’m the original owner of a 2003 orange Rambouillet. It has always worn
Roly Poly tires, but my stock has ran out. It hasn’t worn fenders in over
a decade, and I want to run some bigger tires. I threw my wife’s 700x37 WTB
All Terrains on it and they cleared. I just want to run fatter road tires
on it. What can reliably fit 700x38 or 40s in one of the various Panaracer
makes?

FWIW This bike rides like a silky dream. Ive went through 30+ other bikes
over the years, and this one remains. It is a beauty.

Take the Platypus. Your precious will become more precious the more you
ride not the more she stays behind. But please please, like everyone has
