[RBW] FS: Random Parts

2021-06-21 Thread David B
While I've been quiet in this group, I've been riding my Riv's quite a bit,
which was my goal to dial in and stop tinkering with my Clem and Redwood.
Those are set up perfectly now, and my other bike, a folding bike that
doubles as a tandem/trail-a-bike setup, and I got rid of a beater bike. So,
here's some things for sale.

I've set up everything for sale in my webshop - treetop.bigcartel.com. If
you'd like something, please kindly follow the link and pay through the
checkout process. This makes a transaction a whole lot easier for everyone.
There's other off-topic items in there too.

Prices below INCLUDE shipping with conUS.
Questions, comments, concerns? Feel free to email me, but know that someone
else could pay/claim an item during that time.

So...

Re: [RBW] H/Hilsen (Toyo) tire size

2021-06-21 Thread Doug Williams
I have a Waterford Hilsen in 56 and I run Babyshoe Pass 42's with fenders.
They are close but I have been running them for several years with no
issues.

Re: [RBW] Riding in rain - Why not?

If you have the long reach calipers that some Riv models use, my experience
is they are mostly ineffective with wet rims, so plan your stops carefully.

I was wearing Grundens Poncho which Riv used to sell, Gore-Tex spats

by Mont Bell, and shoes covers also by Mont Bell*.*
Very small area around my knees was uncovered and was a bit wet.
Cleverhood's cheaper poncho is way shorter than Grundens (about 110cm),
so you will need to wear rain pants, I think.

It is indeed, and these fillet frames are astonishing live in person.
Despite his bizarre approach he may get that money for it.

Re: [RBW] Riding in rain - Why not?

2021-06-21 Thread Benjamin L. Kelley
Not especially, if I ride through mucky areas, I use my water bottle to
spray them off once I arrive where I'm going to keep them "clean" or free
of debris.
Requires a bit more braking power or longer stopping time, but not huge.
Rim brake pads don't suck up contamination like disc brake pads do and thus
become wildly ineffective after getting gross.
I also tend to pick up my bike(mainly the rear end) a few inches and drop
it a couple times to shake any excess water off before bringing it inside.
That tends to get the really gross muck off the frame.

Re: [RBW] Parts Shortage Article

2021-06-21 Thread aeroperf
Some of it is a matter of manufacturing plant closures due to covid:
https://www.bicycleretailer.com/international/2021/06/10/shimano-forced-shut-malaysia-component-factory-latest-blow-supply-chain

Some of it is due to unprecedented demand - a new bicycle boom:
https://www.bbc.com/future/bespoke/made-on-earth/the-great-bicycle-boom-of-2020.html

And a lot is due to the general clog in transport:
https://www.npr.org/2021/06/21/1007938067/cargo-is-piling-up-everywhere-and-its-making-inflation-worse

It will all go back to “normal” eventually, but the normal will not be what
it was before the pandemic.

2021-06-21 Thread Benjamin L. Kelley
I also rock a Cleverhood cape. It hangs pretty loose so it doesn't cause a
great deal of condensation underneath unless it's very hot. I'm 5'11"/180cm
with some extra weight and the Cleverhood offers great coverage for me.
I find that for most purposes if I have fenders, I don't really need rain
pants(unless it's very windy), and shoes get wet on bike or off bike so I
don't worry about those.
KC is quite a bit less rainy than other places tho so ymmv.

Cleverhood's cheaper poncho is way shorter than Grundens (about 110cm), so

Re: [RBW] Trail friendly front fender

2021-06-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I admire your indifference to digital technology. I must use it for my
work, though I am more thoroughly enmeshed in it that I need be, but every
time the developers come up with a new and "improved" OS or application, I
curse the added complexity that adds little if any benefit (like increasing
the steps to 4 to put an email message or text message in the trash, or
"hover" windows that block what you are typing just to give you information
you don't need).

But again, very well done fender alternative.

Re: [RBW] Parts Shortage Article

2021-06-21 Thread Ben Mihovk
The nightmare of imports shortages extends to golf, as well. I'm possibly
the only person in this group who loves golf as much as bikes, and I even
work in a golf shop when school is out over the summers. Even though most
OEMs are based in the United States, almost everyone's components are
manufactured in China, shipped here, and assembled in US or Mexican plants.
Grips, shafts, iron and metal wood heads...all randomly out of stock at
each manufacturer, causing delays that we in the bike world would
recognize. The biggest difference is (in my mind) the bike folks are more
patient and understanding than golfers. When I'm at the shop, it seems I
spend a lot time answering phone calls from people who placed orders a
couple weeks ago and would like an update...then checking with the OEM and
hearing there's a delay, and then calling the customer back so he (always a
guy) can yell at me and make me feel like I did something wrong. Not a
whole bunch of fun, and I'm hopeful that the good people at Rivendell
aren't fielding calls like that.

[RBW] Parts Shortage Article

2021-06-21 Thread Doug H.
https://www.bicycleretailer.com/industry-news/2021/05/05/key-bike-component-imports-see-bump-march-%E2%80%94-not-nearly-enough#.YNCK12hKhaQ
"The aftermarket and repair market is relatively small compared to the OE
market" from the linked article.
This article comes as no surprise to folks in this group but the data is
interesting. Parts are scarce on the Rivendell site and elsewhere. I'm
hoping with the pandemic winding down and factories back up and running the
market will balance out supply and demand. It's a short article but
interesting.

[RBW] Re: anyone push their altus (m310) to a 36t rear cog?

2021-06-21 Thread Bill Schairer
I ran an Altus on my Atlantis with a 12-36 9 speed cassette and a 42/34/19
triple for a week on the GDMBR and had no troubles other than being laughed
at by another cyclist for my selection of a rear derailleur. What can I
say - it worked. I decided to switch to the Altus for that ride because I
had it and it has amazing chain wrap, which I thought would be desirable
with that 19t granny. It has been two years now and it is still on the
bike.

Valve stems should be @ 12:00 in photos because the tire logo should be
aligned with the valve stem and if the valve stem is @ 6:00 the tire logo

[RBW] Re: WTB: Giro Rumble, discrete colorway, size 10 1/2 American-equivalent

2021-06-21 Thread Den John
Hello Patrick,

I would avoid the Giro Rumble if I were you. I had a pair for summer
commuting a few years ago and they fell apart after a couple of months.
The stitching behind the toe box came loose, and the sole came away from
the shoe at the back because it's not very securely attached. If they're
not up to commuting, I doubt they'd be much good for light hiking either.

I currently have a pair of Vaude ASM Tsali Mid STX that I've had for more
than 2 years, and there's still a bit of life in them. These are more like
a 2-3 season shoe, whereas the Rumble is more 1-2 season. The Vaudes have
lasted pretty well through every kind of riding I do. Bit too warm in full
summer, but they are pretty close to a proper hiking shoe and are nice to
walk around in.
