Have you tried taking off the cassette and lightly greasing the splines before
reassembling? I used to get a similar sound on my Campy freehub-equipped bikes,
and this always worked.

[RBW] 22.2 interrupter levers?

2021-07-22 Thread J L

Hello all,

Do interrupter style brake levers exist for 22.2 bars (standard mtb bars)?

I imagine having an tosco, losco, or bosco bars with brake levers all the way
back for upright ridding and a second set near the stem for the occasional long
and low position might be nice.

Yes, I had a pewter Saluki and it's a fascinating color that changes quite
a bit depending on the light. It's kinda like the current grilver, maybe a
smidge creamier. The creamy headtube adds to that effect, too.

other models?
The proportions are just right with the 650b wheels. Enjoy!

I was wrong about that Yves, the owner resisted it. Too bad it is too big for
me, the effective TT more than anything else.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2021-07-22 Thread Scott Calhoun
It's a very Rivish build--so I'll probably ride it mostly as-is initially
just to get a feel for it. I had an almost identical drivetrain on my Ram.
Pros
Closet says their boxing method should only require 15 minutes to assemble
the bike. We'll see.

If I'm pleased with the ride and fit, I'll for sure put a lighter tubeless
wheelset and tires on it. I have a silver Ritchey wheelset that would work
great. I'm also more of a narrow Q-factor double chainring fan--so if I rob
a bank or something, maybe I'll put a Rene Herse 46/30 crankset on it.
Beyond that, I don't know. If I had a spare set of Dura Ace DT shifters, I
might swap those out for the barends.

2021-07-22 Thread Kushan
Thanks Mark. I am goign to play around with this a bit. My concern with
mounting along seat tube is that the gap between the seat stay is pretty
wide. While the peg will support the pump near the crank, there won't be
any support on seat collar end. Will try it out and report the findings.

Welcome Adam -

+1 to what Collin said above.

I went with 2x9 wide-low crank on my 60 Appaloosa and I am loving it so
far. I also live in a terrain filled with hills and rollers and so far
(it's only been two days though) haven't missed the third big ring. Plus I
love the look of the chainring guard on the silver cranks.

I also went with the silver bar end shifters and loving the experience. I
am a bit biased as I already have friction shifter on my other bike. I
would say that if you're going to give friction shifting a try, do it with
the best shifter out there (Silver). It's a relatively easy part to change
later if you don't end up liking it.

Zefal makes plastic pump pegs that you can secure around any tube on
your bike. I'm using one on my Atlantis to hold a Zefal pump and it works

I've got an extra one if you'd like, let's say $10 shipped. PM me if

Adam,

Welcome to the cult (err, google group)! If you are lucky, you will end up
tinkering on the bike constantly and this decision on whether to go 2x10 or
3x9, etc. will be an inconsequential one. Honestly, i'm surprised there are
enough parts out there to make that decision!

But in regards to gearing, a 2x system on a triple crank does let you put
on a chainguard which helps with the 'go anywhere' style of bike it sounds
like you are trying to achieve and increased utility (like wearing pants to
work!).

Friction is fun, and the silver2 shifters are pretty dang good at it (and
easy to switch from thumbies to bar ends if you have the mounts for it). I
currently have a full drop bar cockpit sitting in my closet that can be
switched over to my Joe if I once again decide that uprights aren't for
me...but the point is, I can switch between the 2 without much hassle
thanks to the silver2s.

Either way, best to make a decision soon so you can ride the bike sooner
rather than later! There are no 'wrong' decisions to be made here...

[RBW] Re: Gus Boots Forks Garage Sale - Ideas?

2021-07-22 Thread Christopher Cote
Well, if you put one of these on an old "non suspension corrected" 26" MTB
frame that expects a 405mm A-C crown, and use a 27.5" front wheel, it will
lift the front end about 10mm, which is a good thing IME with old MTBs. Not
sure how the increased rake and larger wheel will affect things. Maybe the
decreased wheel flop will "cancel out" the effect of the larger wheel? Wild
speculation on my part. I have a 1992 Trek 930 that would be a good
candidate, but I've got too many irons in the bike project fire right now.

Would prefer version 3 steel although. If you happen to have another

[RBW] Re: Yet another round of name that sound

2021-07-22 Thread Brian Campbell
I would try the following (assumning you have not already):

1. Swap the bb.
2. Light bit of grease of the tapers when installing the cranks
3. Uninstall and re-install the cassette
4. Check the chain for wear and make sure the master link is proerly
secured.
5. Check the front derailer adujustment to make sure the cage it not
hitting the chain or possibly somethig else
6. If you re wearing cleated shoes make sure the cleats are tight. Lower
gearrs means lower pressure/contact with the pedals.
7. Make sure the chainring bolts are tight.
8. IS the spacer (if there is one for 11 speed ) the correct width?

Good luck and hope you solve it quickly!

Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Appaloosa thread

2021-07-22 Thread Adam Smith
Hi all, I'm new around here. I've been lurking ever since I managed to snag
a 60cm orange Appaloosa frame from Rivendell back in June, which was
somewhat of a pandemic impulse purchase. I've wanted a Rivendell for years,
but had no real intention of buying a bike this year...until I saw the
email from Riv. I'm beyond thrilled and so excited to finally own a
Rivendell!

So now Riv is waiting for me to make up my mind on components so they can
build it for me. I might be overthinking things a bit. Help!

I'm stuck on what gearing and shifting to go with...

Since I have a 1x11 on my 29er+ and I have 3x9 gearing on my roadie bike, I
was leaning towards 2x10 on this one to try something new and it seems to
give me the about right range for this "I'm not sure where I'm gonna ride
this bike exactly, probably here, probably there, maybe over there" bike. I
live in the Catskills, NY, so there's definitely lotsa hills, plenty of
country back roads, some gravel and dirt roads for sure, trails too. I
might take her bike camping, why not. Or maybe classic 3x9 gearing for the
widest range possible and I'm so undecided. I'm happy to go with the Silver
brand cranks, but do I need a chain guard. Ooh, those White Industries
cranks are beautiful, but I don't need that. But maybe I do?

I've never tried friction shifting, so I wanna try it out. Was leaning
towards just going with the Silver bar-end shifters and call it a day. Oh,
but the Dura ace bar-end shifters provide both indexed and friction, at
least for the 9sp shifters. Indexed only for the 10sp shifters, I think.
That could be a way to try out friction, but have indexed mode if it ain't
for me.

All else is decided, just hemming and hawing over these two last details.

Thoughts?

Take care, and happy to have found this forum!

Should have some new Homers in the store in the next couple of weeks...

[RBW] Gus Boots Forks Garage Sale - Ideas?

2021-07-22 Thread John Johnson
Hello all,

I've seen the Gus forks up on the Riv site garage sale section. I'm curious
if anyone has any ideas for a good frame that these could be used with. The
399 axle to crown is pretty short for a 27.5 frame, and even short for a
lot of 1 1/8 inch 26" frames.

Any creative thoughts on a good frame that would work without throwing off
the bike's geometry?

thanks in advance!

John

Yeah I don't see any sign it's related to the Roadeo model other than being
a road Rivendell that might kinda match up to a Roadeo in that size. That's
a Nobilette custom fo sho.

[RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2021-07-22 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
It has some additions that I would look at as bonuses beyond the usual
Roadeo frame:
Third set of water bottle braze-ons
Mid fork leg eyelets for a front rack
Two sets of rear dropout eyelets
Rack braze-ons just above the rear brake bridge "hidden" on the inside of
the seat stays
Nice!
