[RBW] Re: chainring installation

2021-12-16 Thread Joe Bernard
This was my guess, too, but it's a really long contraption for that job.
I'm curious the origin of the chainring, I wonder if the screw/bolt/washer
got in the box accidentally.

Not entirely certain (my TA chainring experience is firmly rooted in
50s-60s stuff), but let me hazard a guess:

See that teeny hole below the teeth? My hunch is that if you stuck the
machine screw through the spacer, through the hole, and attached the nut on
the other side (long side away from the frame), it will act as an overshift
pin, to prevent you from shifting so far outboard that the chain comes off
the ring and jams between the big ring and the crankarms.

What say ye, peanut gallery?

[RBW] Re: Good weekend on the Hillborne

2021-12-16 Thread Jason Fuller
Cheers Paul! I have had the probably unrealistic goal of figuring out just
that - to no avail, really, thus far. For most models, there are subtle
differences that can indicate the batch but not always. For Sams, the
colour can be a pretty good indicator along with a few minor details like
the seat lug - and whether it's canti or side pull brakes. Mine's from the
2018/2019 batch

[RBW] Re: Brake lever inward rotation on Noodle Bars

2021-12-16 Thread Scott Calhoun
Having the brake levers turned inward (and using narrower drop bars) is the
current aero fad/trend in the pro peloton. I'm sure Andrew isn't looking
for a position this radical, but you can see some of the positions here.
https://www.italy24news.com/sports/news/20163.html

Stages of some big races were won with using inward brake levers this last
year. I will add that extremely pointed inward levers look awful to my
eyes.

I've found I like mine straight to perhaps slightly pointed outward on

I have bailed because of color choice before as well. I was going to go for
a green Gus last time. Just got to it late and missed it. I wasn’t going to
let another chance slip by! Especially if the spring run is the last of
these. Maybe a tig version instead. But likely a similar price the way
hints are going!

The DarkGold is beautiful, but many of the off-the-shelf component

 someone

Re: [RBW] Re: Gus or Susie, am I crazy?

2021-12-16 Thread Ryan Frahm
Thank you! The green would have been great but I’m not at all upset. I’d
have loved to have Riv build it up but I have some parts to use and
couldn’t justify it. I also love building them up!

I have no need to rush getting wheels I’m sure. But who knows these days!
I’d like silver hubs and options are limited unless using a disc hub. I
probably shouldn’t over spend but I’m excited for this thing so it will be
tough!

Thanks for the tip on calling them. I will likely wait until after the new
year to order some up. And hopefully the frames will be close to the
scheduled delivery!

[RBW] Good weekend on the Hillborne

2021-12-16 Thread st nick

Jason,
I enjoyed reading of your Hillborne adventure.
The great pics really helped on getting drawn into the the experience.
I also have an orange Hillborne which has caliper brakes.
I wish you more great adventures on your Hillborne.

Side question to any reading this.
How do you determine the year of manufacture of Rivendell bikes?
I think mine is from around 2019.

It should be noted regarding wheels you're not limited to/by what's shown
online as Rich has access to other parts/brands as well. Send him a note or

Congrats on your frame! I would have gone with your first choice LimeOlive
as well but wouldn't complain about the dark gold!

As far as wheel availability, just call Riv and see what's up. The stock
online isn't always 100% accurate as to what's available, especially when
you buy a complete and have it built up. They save stuff for builds.

It's nuts that there was another blistering sale. I didn't watch closely
when they went live but as of this morning most sizes and colors are sold
out of the Gus and Susie. You can still get a Homer in every size! I think
the Homer may have limited appeal, though perhaps they got in a *ton *of
them? That seems unlikely. Maybe it's the sidepulls and the tire size
limits. Seems people are eager for frames that offer linear pulls, cantis
and bigger tires as the Platypus, Hillborne, Susie/Gus, Appaloosa frames
all sold lickity split.

It tips the scale on handsome when paired with black & grey. But, if you

blue, purple, raspberry, or even green would top my list.

The DarkGold is beautiful, but many of the off-the-shelf component
