[RBW] Re: Rosco Platypus = Joe's Custom

2022-01-02 Thread Joe Bernard
There's something going on with the seatstays, too, they attach
significantly lower than the top of the seatlug. All kinds of choices there
that are different from the Platypus, it's really not a Platy except for
the donated fork.

2022-01-02 Thread Gill

Lovely pictures of a sharp looking bike set in a really nice neck of the
woods. I happen to have just returned from the area and while I enjoyed the
visit I couldn’t shake the feeling everyone in Asheville was way cooler
than me. Your introductory post has served to strengthen this view. Look
forward to future ride reports.

[RBW] Re: Rosco Platypus = Joe's Custom

2022-01-02 Thread Paul Clifton
FWIW - The seat post clamp is reversed on the baby bikes.

The seat tube angle on the baby bike is 68 degrees though, so I thought it
had something to do with taking the metal out of the seat tube on the side
that doesn't have all that pressure on it.

2022-01-02 Thread Paul Clifton
Wow, that's a perfect bike - everything about it! For me, in particular,
beside the color, it's the bar tape, the triple crank with a small
cassette, and the continental King tires - it all creates a bike that looks
like it is for riding!

What bar tape and rack are those?

Congratulations on the very cool new bike!

[RBW] Re: A Pumpkin Platypus, Perchance?

2022-01-02 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Oh, Heather! I was just heading to bed and read your post and now I’m too
excited to sleep. Are we sisters? We might be sisters. RivSisters, yes,
obviously, but maybe long-lost sisters, too. All your details are not lost
on me. I see you with your wonderfully executed PlatyPose. I see your down
vest in complementary pumpkin and coral. I feel your exuberance in your
lovely, descriptive writing style and ballgown/combat boot analogies. We
just “met” and I already adore you. And finally - you also have two Riv
mixtes?!? Yes, we are sisters. (Actually I really do have a sister named
Heather.)

The pumpkin bisque color (apparently we also have gourmet food in common):
it is out of this world lovely. Luscious. Please, please send us more
photos and of your pretty blue Cheviot townie, too. Do they ride any
differently, or are they pretty similar? What made you want a second one? I
have so many curiosities, if you are inclined to chat about them…

Heartbreak: I remember the Platy Launch Day so well. The heartbreak was
palpable. Who knew this would be the bike that would sell out in mere
minutes? Men and women both clamoring for them. I’m so glad you got one,
even if the color was wrong.

Now it is exactly right.

Please don’t be a stranger on this forum. You are delightful. I am so happy
for you and it is so good to see a Platy in a new color.
Leah

[RBW] Re: Bike storage solutions: 5 or 6 bikes, fenders

2022-01-02 Thread Garth
A great way to store all the bikes in the world would be to never need to
store them in the first place, yes ? They only appear, manifest, "on
demand", as the need arises or called upon. Laugh as any may, it's apparent
to me this is already happening as I speak, that the entire "world" as I/we
know it as "me and my Life" are "instants"... instantacious-ness.. for lack
of a better word ! All that exists is this "here and now" so to speak. This
never ending or beginning "Presence" that is, this, The/IS.

Life is More Grand than the Grandest of ideas of just how grand Life is !
Yee-hah !

made the rack here so the single bikes just clear the floor when hung up.
The tandems have to hang from the ceiling because of their length.

The hooks I got from the local hardware store. I improved the padding
on them by cutting short lengths of garden hose, and softening the hose in
hot water so that I could easily get it over the bend in the end of the
 hooks.

[RBW] Re: Rosco Platypus = Joe's Custom

2022-01-02 Thread Garth
Yes it's likely the sp clamp is for the protos only as they do odd things
with protos sometimes. The canti was mentioned in the Dec 10 blahg. Here it
is in all it's brevity.

*Here are some things we're working on. You may be familiar with some, but
probably not all:*

*4. Two V-brakes. We need only one, but in the interest of more than one
iron in the fire, we're working on two, with two different people and
places. Discs are taking over, but we're all firm V-brake fans, except for
Mark, who can't give up his cantilevers for his personal bikes, but admits
that V-brakes are really good.*

*4. One cantilever brake. Started it along time ago. It's easy enough to
keep going. I wish we had control over it, but we don*'t.

It's odd that the original post was removed shortly after it was posted. I
tried to reply but it was gone.

I'll use Boeshield spray for my next frame.

FWIW, Progold has a "Steel Frame Protector" spray of their own. It's
shipable from a few online retailers.

Frame Saver was bought by Problem Solvers, aka QBP.

It looks so plainly utilitarian, and basically a run-of-the-mill bike to
the untrained eye, but yet the details and the geometry are anything but
ordinary to the trained eye - I love that about it. I can't justify one at
the moment but it's fun to think about as a daily run-about bike!

Thanks Juan! It's a 52cm, which came with dual TT's only for the first
batch or two from my understanding.

Erik, Paul, Ryan, Joe - appreciated! I tend to agree :D

Jay - this frame, and most Bombadils, is 650B. I used to believe they all
were 650, but iirc some of the biggest sizes are 700c. Good eye on the
tires - can't wait to ride them! I bought them in September but haven't

because you can "compact" your bikes together regardless of handlebar

Hi Leah – I realize you said you'd like the bikes up off the floor
*but* consider the Peak Racks. This is a bike parking solution that
leaves the bikes on the ground. It's easy to adapt and space the bikes as
you like to accommodate your fenders and wide bars. Rivendell uses these
 in
the shop. I'd totally be in for these racks if I had room in my shed, but
 I
don't. Also, it's a California-based company and these are MUSA!

Me and my back do not like hanging, balancing and hooking steel bikes.
Especially tricky with fenders. With on the ground storage like this you
can just wheel 'em in and out. With a three-car garage there might be a
 way
to make it all fit and leave things neat and tidy. The bikes are important
and I'd say they deserve their own dedicated bay :) Roll that door up and
 roll the bikes out.

 [image: F4411C72-D9A5-4E1B-BADC-E7EDEF78AC81.jpeg]Hi Friends. I
searched some other threads to find this answer but didn’t really find
 what
I was looking for, and, maybe there have been some updated solutions,
 so, a
 new thread.

We have a new home and a 3 car, extra deep garage. The bikes are
just parked willy-nilly and I dislike it. It looks messy and they are
 bound
to be knocked over. I have my pair of Rivs, which will soon be a trio,
 and
my boys’ two Clems. My bikes are all fendered. Between the wide bars,
 heavy
frames, and fenders, storage options are few. I’d like to get the bike
 up
off of the floor and found this one option on Amazon (see photo). But
 I
don’t know if the rear fender will scrape the floor as I tip up the
 bike,
OR if I can lift the bikes vertically to hang them. It seems it would
 be
awkward. (Note: I would buy more than one of these because we would
 require
more space between bikes with those Bosco and Billie Bars.)

What system do you use to park your fendered Rivs?

 Thanks!
 Leah

[RBW] Re: Rosco Platypus = Joe's Custom

2022-01-02 Thread Joe Bernard
I have not heard anyone from Riv say the front-facing clamp bolt is to
discourage cantis. I'm also unaware of a Riv canti being worked on although
it's possible I've forgotten, they're planning a v-brake.

One nice thing about this positioning is the bolt is easier to get to with
a saddlebag in place. I'm a notorious saddle height fiddler and am
constantly fighting bags to squeeze my wrench in there.

Garth said: " Dictates in the name "saving people/things from themselves"

Be that as it may, I'm not convinced that a backwards seat clamp on a
prototype bicycle frame that is currently not available for purchase
qualifies as a "dictate". But that's just me. I don't even know whether
the production version of that frameset will have a reversed seat clamp.

It is a fact that the investment-cast R05C0 8U883 seat clamp is
reversible. It being reversible, the motivation I ascribe to Rivendell is
"hey, it's reversible, lets try it reversed on these prototypes"

For fun, here is a link to a flickr photo of my R05C0 8U883 "medium

For what it's worth, any tig-welded Rivendell without a liftatube is an
opportunity lost. I'd buy back my former "medium mountain mixte" for the
price I sold it.

*I know that it was not really a mixte. I know that inaccurately referring
to it as a mixte makes some people crazy. In the arm wrestling match
between "alliteration" and "placating the handwringers", I usually choose
alliteration.

Eric, Rivendell as well as countless buyers have assembled even lower TT
Clem-L's, and similar TT height Gus/Susie frames with canti brakes.

Dictates in the name "saving people/things from themselves" are empty
promises as they have no intention of saving anyone/anything except the
dictates themselves from being challenged on their validity.

Regarding the backwards SP clamp and the exclusion of brake bridge cable
stops, considering Riv is invested in their own brand of canti brake as
well as v-brake it's self-defeating to exclude one brake type or the other
from any of their frames.
