Added more photos to the gallery above. After cleaning it up, there's more
nicks and scratches than I remember. Let's say $1200 unless the original
price wasn't a good starting point to begin with.

2022-02-28 Thread Ryan
Not my size and too many bikes including a 70's SS PX-10 with moustache
bars...and the non-trials WI freewheel on 36-hole late 70's Campy Record
hubs, which I love, ratty as it is.

But...what a sweet bike! Love the build; you sure put a lot of thought into
it. I sense a bit of seller's remorse. Hope it finds a good home...it is a
beauty!

[RBW] FS(Bay Area): 58? Quickbeam

2022-02-28 Thread diekaiser
Hey all. With regret, I'm selling my Quickbeam. Unfortunately living in a
studio doesn't accommodate owning 4+ bikes and the Quickbeam didn't make
the cut. I'm heading up to SF on March 5th for a birthday roadtrip to
Oregon and will be there for the weekend if you would like to check it out.

I was having a hard time figuring out which size model it is from the Riv
catalogs but it has a 57cm top tube and a 56cm seat tube (I measured center
to center) which I believe puts it at the 58cm model.

Sale includes Frame, fork, headset, bottom bracket, seat post, and wheel
set. Unfortunately, I don't have a spare set of brakes as they are moving
to a different bike along with the crankset. I figured the cockpit would be
purely preferential. With that said, I have a selection of nitto bars if
someone would like to inquire.

I'd say the condition is great as in there are no dents, large scratches,
etc but the decals are a bit scratched up from locking etc. The only other
thing that I didn't know about when I bought it was that the front-left
fender eyelet may be stripped. I'll investigate more closely soon but just
wanted to mention it.

*Details*
Tange Levin headset
Shimano BB (I don't remember the exact width but I believe it is the one
that came stock)
Nitto 83 seat post
36h Dura-Ace 7600 track hubs (fixed/fixed)
White Industries 19t freewheel
36h Velocity Atlas rims (non-machined)
700x38 Panaracer Gravelking EXTs (if you would like them).

$1300, but if that doesn't sound reasonable I'm more than happy to chat
about it.

Here are some photos of the different iterations in which it has been set up
.

I'll add some more detail photos to the same link shortly.

Moving the shifter shouldn't be a problem, I suspect you simply don't have
quite what you need to index-shift that low-normal mech.

Interesting. Will moving the shifter location on the handlebar generally
require a cable adjustment? I’ve been playing quite a bit with where I want

[RBW] FS: SimpleOne 58cm

2022-02-28 Thread J Schwartz
This one hurts. I know I'm gonna regret selling this bike...but I'm not
riding it too much lately and just converted my Hillborne to a 2 speed with
a Paul Melvin...and need to continue to shed a few bikes.
I bought this as a frameset from Rivendell when they were released, back in
2012 or so.
I recently had the bike repainted by Bilenky . They also did a small dent
repair in the downtube.
They repainted the bike the same slimy green but with a cream head tube.
They also did all the little windows and fork wings in cream.
It's a 58cm and a special bike. It's been set up as a kind of trail
scorcher. I've ridden it a lot on the rail trails here in the Hudson
Valley. It's got a 6 tooth spread on the crank chainrings and 700x43cm
Bruce Gordon tires, Also a White Industries 20T green freewheel.
I've mostly ridden it in the big (middle) chainring and really have only
manually shifted it for some long monster climbs, on pavement. Wheels are
Synergy 32h laced to high polish hi-flange Paul hubs. I recently changed
the hubs from quick release to the fancy hex nuts and washers and keep 2
hex wrenches attached to the seat stays with super magnets for fast rear
axle adjustments on the road.
While the paint is relatively new and it's not had a lot of use since being
repainted, there are a few chips here and there. The only one that is of
note is a scrape on the bottom of the downtube (facing the road, so you
can't see it) that happened when I dropped a pedal wrench when attaching
pedals.
Other than that, on the rack braze-ons, there's a little paint
scuffingand the rear dropouts of course. **Note, in the photo below ,
the rear dropouts looked more scuffed than they arethat's actually
white grease that's showing up in the photo *

This bike is so good. I had an orange Quickbeam in the same size (58)
..they are essentially identical frames...but the SimpleOne is better.
The drivetrain on this bike is great. It engages instantly ...not sure if
that's due to the heavier duty White Industries green "trials
" freewheel (more
engagement points than the standard W.I. freewheels)...but it just clicks
right it and feels like a single speed should. Pedaling in reverse leads
to no chain suck or chain slap or whatever that's called.
The freewheel is 20t. That may sound high, but it worked very well for my
needs which included climbing on paths. The front chainrings are 38 and 32
(I believe).
Bars are Chocos upside down on a 10cm Tallux...with ESI grips and
shellacked Newbaums on the curves.

Parts list below:

Rivendell SimpleOne

Size 58cm

*NO SADDLE OR PEDALS*

short & long pull) (from Riv)

Riv)

· Sugino XD2 crankset in 170mm (from Riv, has some wear on the
anodizing on the arms)

· 6-tooth spread – Inner ring - Sugino 32T, Middle ring - Sugino 38T &
Outside ring - Sugino bashguard (which I had powdercoated black)

· 8-speed SRAM chain

added strong Paul hex nuts and washers (rear 120mm)

· Velox rim tape

· Bruce Gordon Rock n Road tires in black sidewall, tubes

· Jagwire brake cable and housing (White)

· Pletscher Twin Legger kickstand with added rubber feet

Price is $2800 net to me. I'm in New York's Hudson Valley. Can bring the
bike to NYC though. Shipping is doable at your cost. I can ship from a
quality bike shop (Riv dealer) in my hometown.

Here are some quick iPhone pics. PHOTOS

In terms of "issues" , there really aren't any. The aforementioned scrape
on the bottom of the downtube.there's a scrape in the Tallux stem from
a Crane Bell that was on there for awhile. The Clamp bolt in the stem is
starting to strip out ...Should be replacedNew bolts

can be purchased from Rivendell for $5.00. There is a some slight zig zag
on the sleeve of the Choco bars ...came to me that way from another list
member.

Friends!

The Roscoe Bubbe baby bike has been great to me the past year, doing lots of
park and school drop off duties plus weekend runs for pancakes. I’m still
looking for a Clem Smith Jr L in mustard for when it’s time to pass the baby
bike along to another parent.

I’m also interested in another Bubbe baby bike, have a friend looking for one
in the smaller/650b incarnation. Let me know what you’ve got!

It seems like there's much more choice
in 25.4mm stems (either ahead or quill). 25.4mm would go nicely
with a Nitto V-4 or V-5, then there's much less worry about slipping.

Yes, the shifters do friction and that's how it's being used now. Seems to

Follow up question. Is ALL shimano 9 speed the same? Road/MTN? Thinking I

[RBW] Re: What size fenders on your Platy?

2022-02-28 Thread JAS
I have the Velo Orange fenders on my Platy also: 700c Zeppelin Fenders,
52mm - Silver. They look great and are essential in the rainy PNW. My
vision for the build was to keep it light, thus I'm using narrower tires
than on my Clem. I have the super wide B65 SKS fenders on Clem and they've
been just fine. They're not as fancy as the Zeppelins, but certainly good
looking, sturdy and functional. They clear the 2.0 inch tires (650B) and
have front safety tabs.

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: What size fenders on your Platy?

2022-02-28 Thread Tom Wyland
Ha! Yes I was asking because of the sale. I purchased a gift card on sale
last year so I get the sale price anyhow.
Leah, I thought you had 650b fenders that were re-radiused? Or was that
someone else?
I'm just tired of my 50mm SKS fenders moving around and rubbing on my 42mm
tires. I prefer at least 10mm of clearance instead of 8mm.

Also the Bluelug stem has arrived! Again, it's threadless, 80mm long,
black, and fits a 25.4 handlebar.

[RBW] Re: Shellacing the Neubaums

2022-02-28 Thread Eric Marth
JohnS: It sounds like you have too much shellac in your brush. Submerge the
bristles of your brush only about a half inch and then lay off the brush by
wiping the end of the bristles on the underside of the rim of the can. You
only need enough to get a single even coat. Shellac dries quickly, it won't
be long until you're ready for the next application.

As Jstern mentions denatured alcohol is great for cleaning up any shellac
that ended up where you don't want it. Just dab a bit onto a rag and then
wipe the rag over your trouble area.

I don't cover the bike, sometimes I'll mask my bar end shifter pods with
blue painter's tape but I usually don't bother.

I haven't had any trouble handling the shellac, no issues with runs or
drips. I use a 1" wide chip brush and always lay off my brush on the inside
edge of the can. I clean my brush with denatured alcohol and have used the
same cheap brush for many shellac applications over the last several years.

Be warned! Shellac can and does go bad. I pulled an old can of amber
shellac out of our warehouse for my handlebars once. It never dried and was
still tacky and goopy days later. I removed it with denatured alcohol.
Better your bars than a furniture project!

It depends on the project but I typically like three coats of shellac.

A few updates and some price reductions.

Pictures are here.

1. Further Adventures in Rough Stuff – *$25*
Pretty much as new. Read it, set it aside. In nice shape!

2. Velo Orange threadless stem – *$15*
It’s a 17º rise stem, 8cm with a 25.4 bar clamp diameter. For 1-1/8”
steerer clamp. Installed, never ridden.

3. *SOLD *Blue Lug threadless stem cap – $15
With some lovely patina and weathering.

4. *SOLD *Nitto wire saddle bag guard — $30
Rubber and metal in nice shape.

5. *SOLD *Nitto Technomic Deluxe 6cm stem – $65
With a 26.0mm clamp diameter, 190mm overall length, 100mm useable length.
Mounted, never ridden.

6. Velocity skewers —* $10*
100 front, 135 rear.

7. Shimano bar end shifters – $60
Some lite scuffs, good shape! *These are the SL BS-78 Dura Ace model. *

8. Dia Compe 981 short pull levers – *$10*
Really big Dia Compe levers from an MB-3. With overspray from silver spray
paint (I didn’t do it!). It’s a gd amount of silver paint, pictures
don’t really show it.

9. Oury Single Compound Grips – $12
Brand new, in da package, never installed. Black, made in USA.

10. Foldylock Compact lock – *$40*
Black, in good shape. Two keys included (despite one pictured) and mounting
sleeve.

11A. Shimano RD-1055 105 rear derailer – *$10*
Short cage, 7 speed.

11. Shimano FD-1055 front derailer – *$10*
With a 28.6 clamp, for 2x7.

12. Brass cup washers – Four for $1
These fit nicely with Rivendell Silver 1 and Silver 2 shifters and I use
them on both. Solid brass. Number 12 brass cup washers, also known as
countersunk washers.

13. *SOLD *Microshift RD-R47 R10 rear derailer – $35
The box rates this as max 28t in the rear but other members have reported
it’ll shift up to 32t. Brand new in the box. Use with a double or triple.

14. *GREEN ONE SOLD *Blue Lug reflective triangles – $15/each
New with tags removed, never installed. Willing to sell separately. One
blue and dark gray. One green and purple. Rare opportunity to know which
colors you’re getting!

15. *SOLD *Dia Compe 981 cantilever brakes – $20
Pads are shot! Could use a nice once over with some Simple Green and a
brush. No hanger wires or clamps.

16. Wald 137 basket — $10
Black, slightly warped and bent, a few spots of rust. Still a good,
functional basket.

17. Suntour Accushift barcons – $50
Some scrapes and scratches as shown. Seems they were dressed up a bit with
Sharpie (notice the purple hues), both levers are like this. Nice movement,
for friction or indexing but by all accounts work best for friction
shifting.

18. Shimano BR-AT50 cantilever brakes — $20
Pads are shot! Could use a nice once over with some Simple Green and a
brush.

19. Surly rear rack – $50
It's a big rear rack, painted black. Some chips through paint and surface
rust. No structural damage.
20. Soma toe strap pads – FREE
Please don't ask how I ended up with five (5!) sets of unused toe strap
pads. Yours for free. Please take them.

Hi, Brynnar. I have a set of Ron's Bars that I'm not going to use
(switched over to Choco-moose on my Hunqapillar). Like-new shape, maybe
some marks from clamping, but otherwise perfect. Centering looks good on
them too - the edge of the blue tape in the photos is the center. I'd sell
them for the same thing I paid: $120 + shipping. (Shipping probably will
be significant - I'm in northern NJ/NYC if you're local.) Photos here

Does anyone know why they went for a 26mm clamp rather than 25.4mm? It
seems like there's much more choice
in 25.4mm stems (either ahead or quill). 25.4mm would go nicely with a
Nitto V-4 or V-5, then there's much less worry about slipping.

A little more width on the back would be nice, probably noticing it more

Alcohol, denatured Alcohol can take the shellac off of the places you do

Re: [RBW] Indexing Rapid Rise Questions

2022-02-28 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
As a matter of fact, derailleur cables do not stretch. The forces involved in
shifting are many orders of magnitude lower than the yield stress required to
stretch the cable. What actually happens is that inside liner of the cable
housing wears and causes the cable to become looser. Generally, a half turn out
of the cable tension adjuster will compensate for this.

I get the rationale behind the one-by drive train and certainly the
satisfaction of filling your recycling bin with front derailers. And
nothing against 'em! If you get by on a one-by that's all right by me.

My thinking: "That massive cassette is absurdly big! It's almost like a
middle finger to front mechs everywhere! What do people have against front
 mechs, anyway?"

Okay, then. I'm heading to Etsy to look for stickers that say COME AND
TAKE IT with little front derailer sillhouettes on them.

A dropped chain if you're lucky, a chain jammed between the chainring
and chainstay if you're not. Plus eliminating it gets rid of the need to
trim, a thing that always annoyed me. My Riv Custom is 1x, no more front
 derailers for me.

[RBW] Re: Sunday Sale: Mechs, stems, skewers, brakes, books

2022-02-28 Thread Eric Marth

A few updates and I added a Surly rear rack for $50 and some free Soma toe
strap pads. Thanks, everyone!

Pictures are here.

1. Further Adventures in Rough Stuff – $30
Pretty much as new. Read it, set it aside. In nice shape!

2. Velo Orange threadless stem – $20

5. Nitto Technomic Deluxe 6cm stem – $65
With a 26.0mm clamp diameter, 190mm overall length, 100mm useable length.
Mounted, never ridden.

6. Velocity skewers — $12
100 front, 135 rear.

7. Shimano bar end shifters – $60
Some lite scuffs, good shape!

8. Dia Compe 981 short pull levers – $15

10. Foldylock Compact lock – $60
Black, in good shape. Two keys included (despite one pictured) and mounting
sleeve.

11A. Shimano RD-1055 105 rear derailer – $15
Short cage, 7 speed.

11. Shimano FD-1055 front derailer – $15

15. Dia Compe 981 cantilever brakes – $20
Pads are shot! Could use a nice once over with some Simple Green and a
brush. No hanger wires or clamps.

16. Wald 137 basket — $10
Black, slightly warped and bent, a few spots of rust. Still a good,
functional basket.

17. Suntour Accushift barcons – $50
Some scrapes and scratches as shown. Seems they were dressed up a bit with
Sharpie (notice the purple hues), both levers are like this. Nice movement,
for friction or indexing but by all accounts work best for friction
shifting.

18. Shimano BR-AT50 cantilever brakes — $20
Pads are shot! Could use a nice once over with some Simple Green and a
brush.

19. Surly rear rack – $50
It's a big rear rack, painted black. Some chips through paint and surface
rust. No structural damage.
20. Soma toe strap pads – FREE
Please don't ask how I ended up with five (5!) sets of unused toe strap
pads. Yours for free. Please take them.

[RBW] Re: What size fenders on your Platy?

2022-02-28 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I *think* I have these Velo Orange fenders on my raspberry
Platy.
https://velo-orange.com/collections/fenders/products/vo-fluted-63mm-fenders-700c

And, VO is having a sale, so hurry, hurry.

My mermaid Platy has the SKS fenders, same as yours. I have a fondness for
them because I had SKS on my first Riv, my old Betty Foy.

Good luck.

Re: [RBW] Indexing Rapid Rise Questions

2022-02-28 Thread Garth
Drew, These shifters have a friction mode, yes ? If they shift and hold
all the gears in friction, but not with indexing it would either be wonky
shifters or they are very sensitive to tension. The LX RR has a cable
tensioner yes ? Play around with it slightly as you're shifting and see
where/when/if it's hold those middle gears.

The middle cogs on 9-speed cassettes, like the 18-21-24 are most prone to
wandering, so the derailleur position needs to be "just right" to hold the
cogs.
