Very nice build. As a fellow '95 Road rider, I share your enthusiasm for
this bike's riding characteristics. 26" was used by RBW a couple of times
to get better geometry in smaller size frames. It works. Hope you enjoy
many miles on yours!

[RBW] Re: Jim 7 speed cassette on a triple

2022-05-04 Thread Garth
As long as you're within the total capacity of the RD it could work with
one of those Wolf Tooth derailleur hanger extensions, called a Roadlink I
think. Others make them, but Wolfies and Wheels Mfg I know for sure use a
stainless steel bolt, while the other use aluminum. The Wolfie helps to
clear the largest cog only, it doesn't add any capacity, that's for the
RD. A 13-42 , at 29 teeth, doesn't leave much room for a triple with much
spread. 45t is what most mtb RD are ? That leaves 16t spread for the rings.
I for one never use certain combos of course so these "formulas" are
theoretical, actual use, if you know what you're doing, can go beyond all
that. "Know what you're doing" ... meaning not running say a 26t small
cog and the last 3 cogs, and likewise, not using the big ring in at least
the 2 largest cogs, it really depends on the crank chainline and how much
you heed or ignore the horrible sound of cross angling of the chain.

A half step triple would work, like a 44/40/28 for example. The numbers are
off the top of my head, not a suggestion. Having the half step would help
split some of the large jumps in the cassette.

+1 for Bivo, I'm really enjoying mine. However, I did get the raw stainless
and ejected one out of a Ti King Cage on a gravel descent. If you're riding
rough stuff the silicon coated might be a better option, though I've never
felt on in-hand.

Andrew,

Did you buy the raw or the coated version. How are they noise wise on a

[RBW] FS: derailers - Rapid Rise & high normal vintage RDs, Paul Cantis, Racers, Canti Levers, Skewers, and various other parts

2022-05-04 Thread J J
Hi, folks. I'm in a spring cleaning mode and want to lighten my overflowing
parts bin for builds and bikes I have dreamed about but that have not
materialized.

I'm super excited about Rivendell's low normal RD that's in development. I'm a
huge fan of Rapid Rise and have exclusively run low normal RDs on my
Hunqapillar for some time. They've always been great to set up, adjust, and
maintain — in my experience, no better or worse than standard high normal RDs,
and they index perfectly. Low normal shifting logic makes so much sense for my
riding, with low gearing, heavy loads, and friction shifting, which I suspect
is similar to the way so many on this forum ride. Alas, I have stockpiled too
many Rapid Rise RDs, so I'm offering some here now, along with a few other
parts.

I’m looking to get what I put into the parts or slightly less — the important
thing is for them to be actually used on bikes instead of sitting in storage.
Prices do not include shipping. I accept Apple Pay/Cash, Venmo, and PayPal
Friends and Family (with thanks to a fellow RBW list member for recently
alerting me to the F payment process).

I had trouble attaching photos here, but I had put a bunch of photos on Google
Drive
 with
file names that indicate what's what. Please send me a direct/private message
by email if anything interests you.

Thanks very much.

2022-05-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I just posted on the Boblist asking where to get 32-oz Nalgene bottles with
screw-on caps that fit bottle cages, but your post reminds me of stainless
steel and so I ask, why bother even with Nalgene plastic?

Does anyone know of a stainless steel bottle of at least 28 fl oz capacity
but better 32 fl oz capacity with a screw-on cap that fits bottle cages?

Note: I have ss insulated bottles for bike cages, what I am looking for is
ss bottles with screw-on caps, particularly caps that screw over the
opening to cover it instead of simply screwing into the opening like a plug
with threads.

The bottles need not be insulated or double wall (again, I've got plenty of
those).

Wow your bike is gorgeous!!

The Elk Pass tires are really nice.

My primary concern about getting thinner wheels was that I live in San
Francisco, where I've fallen way too many times into street car tracks
especially when it's raining, so these feel like a good size.

This is the lightest and nicest bike I've ever had. The classic look and
feel suits me and the riding feels more 'my style'. I am excited to spend
more time on it!

Re: [RBW] Re: That new rear derailer

2022-05-04 Thread Jon Dukeman
Not sure if this is the answer you are looking for.
I removed my 9 spd Altus and replaced it with a 9spd Shimano XT rapid rise
derailuer. I'm using Microshift 9 speed indexing thumb shifters that work
great with11- 36 cassette Front derailuer is friction. Silver 38×24 cranks
I did not have to do anything to the chain length.
I really like having front & rear shifters move the same way for high and
low gears.

[RBW] Re: That new rear derailer

2022-05-04 Thread Corwin
Not to belabor the point - but...

My question was not "Will the new derailer index?". My question was "How
many people that disdain rapid rise have actually tried it?" Based on my
experience using drivetrain components not matched [or not quite matched]
for each other, I am not likely to try indexing on a derailer not
specifically designed to index. I do think rapid rise is unfairly maligned.

Corwin

Laing,

The Volkswagen is from 1958, so post barndoor (3/50 thru 3/55) but still
"early" but most standards.

Thanks for taking notice.

[RBW] Re: Hillibikes are so close!

2022-05-04 Thread Ryan Frahm
Wally, sounds like what my Susie is going to be! The Tumbleweed rack should
work out perfect! I have mounted one to a standard rear spaced bike as well
as a new boost rear. They are a great rack. I just loaned mine to my cousin
for the Colorado trail this summer or I’d be using it. Still might if he
gives it back! I had the shorter version and it cleared 29x3 on a few
different bikes so that is probably the size to go for.

2022-05-04 Thread Ryan Frahm
Valerie, that is exciting but definitely doesn’t help the wait! Haha.

My Susie will be replacing my current bike. I only build one at a time in
hopes to find one that I really enjoy more than any other. I have a feeling
the Susie will be a keeper though. I have a Pass and Stow rack for the
front that I hope plays nice with the steering. I do typically prefer a
front load and just a saddle bag out back when needed.

I’ve been looking at the Erlen rack from Ocean Air Cycles or a Nitto R-14
or bag support for the rear. I have a field tan Fab’s chest on the way and
I almost just went for the Pec Deck “rack”, we’ll see.

[RBW] Re: Photos and details of my 1995 Riv Road Standard build

2022-05-04 Thread Ryan
Oh...I'm glad it worked out for you and you like the bike! I love the
splash of yellow; it's so cheerful. Matches the buttery smooth ride of
those early Rivendells

Hope you have many happy miles on it.

[RBW] Re: Hillibikes are so close!

2022-05-04 Thread Wally Estrella
*Is anyone planning to tour with theirs?*
Yep, my Gus will be a commuter/grocery-getter/bikepacker ride -the guS-UV.
I'm planning on Tumbleweed racks for it. The TW racks are designed around
modern wider hubs/frames, but I think it'll squeeze in OK to mount on a
Gus. I've seen a pic of a T-tack on a Gus, just need to find it again.

I had a thread about handlebar choice a few months ago, then Rivendell
without any fanfare slipped a new Nitto bar into their lineup which
basically filled all of my criteria. The new Bull bar seems to have gone
under the radar, (it didn't immediately sell out) and is going to be
perfect for my slightly too big XL Susie! I am going to wait until I have
the bike in front of me to try all the options and see which one wins.
I am excited to see everyone else's builds, Some nice sounding parts
 lists going on here.
Was hoping for an update in today's email too and was a little
 disappointed.
