[RBW] FS: Velo Orange Randonneur Rack and Suntour shifters

2022-06-16 Thread Ben Adrian
*Older Velo Orange Randonneur Rack with separate 1" decaleur.*

This shows some wear, but works fine. Mounts with included P clamps or to
fork braze ons.

Notice, the mount for the brake/fork crown has been cut. Also, it's not a
diving board style, but rather is welded to the rack frame. Also, I have to
squeeze the decaleur mount slightly to put the mount onto the receiver. I
don't know if this is a standard thing or just some weirdness with this
unit. It's never been a bother for me though. I just want to be fully clear
of what is being sold.

$80 shipped for the set.

*Suntour Friction Shifters*

In excellent shape. They look super cool to me. True friction; no indexing,
no power ratchet. I went back to my bar end shifters.

$20 shipped

Check out photos here if you can

Thanks!
Ben

[RBW] Double Rivendell Models

2022-06-16 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I got a DM on Instagram from a new Gus owner. He is loving his Gus so much
he said he might copy my idea and get another, and set them up differently.
I’ve been emailing with a woman who wonders if getting a Rivendell mixte
might be worth it since she already has a Clem L. It made me wonder if
anyone else has had the same idea.

Also, this is an excuse to give you my unvarnished opinion on the matter.

When I bought a second Platypus, people did not understand. You have *two,
*they
would say. I felt stupid admitting it, but I knew it was the right
decision. I love a Platy. That model fits me so well, I love to ride it,
and I love the look of it, too. Ok, people will say, but what about
*variety*? You could get a different bike. True, but I know me. And me is
guilty of having 7 pairs of jeans but only wearing 3. I have favorites.

I regret nothing. I ride both of those Platypuses every single week. When
one is out of commission, I am greatly comforted that I have another. They
are set up very differently, but I never think, “Oh, I wish this one was
like that one.” They are different enough that I feel I have variety, but
familiar to me in form and feel. I love to ride them both. And I never feel
sheepish when people ask me about why I have two.

Today, I rode them both, my Pair O’ Platypuses. I started the day running
errands by bike. The Overkill Shopping Platypus was the perfect choice for
dropping a package at the post office.. Later, I took my sons on the River
Trail to do some sightseeing. The Racing Platypus was the perfect choice
for that.

Who else has been secretly coveting a duplicate bike? Who else adores their
Rivendell so much that they just want a second of the exact same model?
Pics in the next post, so that Google can’t turn them sideways on me…

[RBW] Re: Reading posts with huge photo files embedded in the text

2022-06-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, all.

First, yes, I also have suggested attaching instead of embedding huge image
files, but alas to no avail.

I get email via gmail not via website.

As to right-clicking, it's not the image that's the problem, it's the
surrounding text.

And I try reducing the page size but some images are so big that when all
fits onto my 42" wide screen the text is too small to read comfortably.

I've taken to deleting such messages without reading them. Again, high-def
gaming monitor (LG, cost me a cool $1K in 2016 or so.)

2022-06-16 Thread Garth
Yeah Patrick, As George pointed out, just open the images in a new tab,
that's what I do as viewing images in the messages itself is always wonky.
I open new windows for darn near all images I view online. I'm using Linux
Mint and Firefox ESR. I know you've expressed this many times before but I
never quite knew what you meant, or what you were experiencing exactly. So
yeah , it's that simple, right click and open in a new window. Tech-no-logy
for all it's self deluded "ain't I great" , utterly fails in any sort of
Universal understanding and communicability. F F F failure. Too bad this is
the "wrong" forum for an epic tech-no-rant !

That Trek/Crust conversion sounds awesome. Please post some pictures if

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Sackville Saddlesack Large

2022-06-16 Thread E. Ricky Creek
Bag is pending.
Eric, it needs a rack to work. The bag is huge. The distance between the
rack and the saddle is flexible. If the distance is low then the front
scrunches up, but it still works fine. Unlike a large Carradice that will
side sag if it doesn't have enough clearance, this one works fine even
scrunched. I use this model of bag for all my touring along with a
handlebar bag. I have done 3 weeks with that setup and nothing else.

[RBW] Re: Reading posts with huge photo files embedded in the text

2022-06-16 Thread Paul Clifton
Patrick,
I don't think there is anything you can do on your end, but I might see if
I can figure out a work-around ... Are you reading posts in email or using
the google groups web page?

The only way I know of to solve the problem is for the poster to do some
extra leg work formatting the images for sharing.

Re: [RBW] Re: Club Rides On A Racing Platypus

2022-06-16 Thread Mike Packard
This thread is epic. Thank you continuing to share your adventures with us
Leah.

FWIW: I'm no expert but if there is anyone in Austin TX who would like to
learn to change a tire I'd be happy to show how I do it. I can provide the
wheel and tube and tools and stuff so you wouldn't have to mess with your
own bike. For me the most finicky / difficult parts are getting the very
first part of the tire off the rim and getting the last part of the tire
back on the rim; those are where I get the most pinched fingers and am
worried I'm going to hurt the tire or rim with the tire levers.

I've never used something like this but I wonder how much it would help.

[RBW] Reading posts with huge photo files embedded in the text

2022-06-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I have a gaming-quality, 42" monitor (used for work, so I can see 3 Word
docs side by side at 100% or normal magnification from 24-30" away), and
when opening some recent posts with photo files in the text, the text
spreads considerably beyond the limits of this large screen. All images are
at 100%, not expanded.

How can I get these posts entirely onto my screen, so that I don't have to
shift the image from side to side to see it all?

Others don't seem to have this problem.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your biggest tire on AH Hilsen?

2022-06-16 Thread Sean Cleary
Thank you Patrick (!) as a big concern is exceeding my Velocity Dyad
25-38mm limits with proposed 43-45mm tire. Don't want that
wallowing-off-the-rim feel I sometimes get on my very low pressure mountain
bike tires. But your experience is vey enlightening. Velocity told me
to NOT attempt to make rims tubeless either but fascinated with you,
effectively, throwing that caution into the wind as well! After all, didn't
tubless-ness originate on non-tubeless rims??

[RBW] FS: Shimano Bar End Shifters, Brake Levers, Derailleurs

2022-06-16 Thread Bob K.
Hi Everyone,

I used to post often but haven't in quite some time. Hope it's OK that I
list a few parts for sale. Local pickup (Baltimore) preferred. Prices are
OBO and do not include shipping (although I am happy to ship at your
expense). If I'm off on a price, please just let me know. Paypal F/F,
please.

Pictures found in this Google Drive folder

.

Thanks for any interest. Please reply off-list.

Bob K. in Baltimore

Shimano Tiagra Road Levers: Short-pull. Good, not perfect, condition. $30.

Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#1): Beat up but still function
well. Mounts included. $35.

Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#2): Nicer with only a couple
scuffs. Mounts included. $60.

Shimano Deore FD-M591: This is a "traditional dual-pull multi-clamp front
derailleur." I don't remember why I own this, but it sure seems like a
front derailleur! $15.

Shimano Deore RD-M591: Good shape. It's long-cage and 9-spd. I used it with
friction levers on a vintage MTB build for a few months. $30.

Just a remark about 38 mm tires on Open Pro rims. If you worry that
38s are too wide for those rims, fear not; I rode 50s on 19 mm rims
(OW) for thousands of miles on rough dirt tracks with absolutely no
problem; and I presently ride 71 mm tires on 24 mm (OW) rims on dirt
tracks (tubeless tires, non-tubeless rims, lotsa tape,13 psi,
sealant); again, no problem. I think that Mavic states a 28 m max
width for one of two reasons: remote liability concerns, or optimum
tire cross-section profile.

And I see that Mavic offers the Open Pro in the 650C/571 bead seat
diameter size; who'd 'a thunk?

Patrick Moore, whose 41 mm Naches Passes have the perfect
cross-section profile on Sun Ringle EQ 21s (21 mm OW).

Thanks Lance. That does seem to be the problem, so many (too many?) choices in
bars.

I do ride road and mtn, though probably 80% road thus that desire for something
with a little drop and having a variety of hand positions. Am narrowing down
option and albatross is in there.

Re: [RBW] Potential Wheel Trade?

2022-06-16 Thread John Moore
While I don’t have said wheel, I do have a couple of Campy freewheel hubs
floating about if you’re interested. Would let one go for a very nominal fee
from one Campyonly person to another. 
