Joe,
Oh, that hurts! I'm so sorry about your rack. Thank you for the advice.
Fortunately, I don't have to worry about L.A., but it's good to be aware a

[RBW] FS: '84 Trek 720 (19"), Billie Bars

2022-06-20 Thread Collin A
Howdy Bunch,

I've got a few things lingering in the bike closet that need to go!

Photos here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/fq8pdK8MorGTXYNN7

*1984 Trek 720, size 19"* - Comes with frame, fork, FSA duron headset and
kalloy 27.2 seatpost. I bought this a couple months ago from IBOB, so its a
bit of a catch-and-release + some extras. I built this up for my wife to
use as a loaner bike over the summer...needless to say she liked it, but
now she is back in SLC with her Rivendell and I no longer have a need for
it. Fits 700x35 with fenders on skinny rims with older-style cantilever
brakes - Hoping for *$500 + shipping*. I'll need to hunt down a bike box.

*Billie Bars* - They are in generally good condition...however, this is
from the first batch where the clamp diameter is just ever so slightly less
than 22.2, which means some brakes/shifters/etc. won't work well without a
thin layer of electrical tape to add some extra diameter. However, some
lower-end components will fit fine for whatever reason - Hoping for
*$70+shipping.*

I'm going through some other bits and bobs and will likely update the photo
album, so if you see something that is of interest just let me know!

Cheers,
Collin in Sactown

I had a 1up rack but it got stolen! The thieves must have had the special allen

no problem. Don’t leave your 1up racks on your car in Los Angeles!

It would have fit my new Susie no problem.

Re: [RBW] Hillibikes are so close!

2022-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Brendon: A Riv cuddling up to a Volvo 240? That marriage will last.

I've never owned a Volvo, but my brother, who drives 35X more in a year
than I do (me, no more than 500 miles per year), and traveled several times
per year between LA and ABQ until he moved to latter, owned several of
these, all hi-miles, and swore by them. Apparently, almost as good as old
Toyotas.

What are those tires?

Daniel: G-Ones! I can't read the tire size; 650B or 700C? 60s for certain.

If those G-Ones are anything close to as nice as the ineffably wonderful

[RBW] Re: long wheelbase, Hillibikes + tray racks

2022-06-20 Thread JAS
I have a 1UP rack and my bikes fit fine.
   Clem size 52 cm with a 117cm wheelbase (tires are 650b x 48)
Platypus size 55 cm with a 122 cm wheelbase (tires are 700x42)

I did my best to measure the wheelbase of each bike, but they might be
slightly off by a cm or so.

[RBW] Wheel building, 36 into 32: in case it's of interest to non-i-Bob-list-members.

2022-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Someone posted this in a discussion of lightish, rim-brake 559 rims. It
might allow someone to buy 32 rims for 36 hubs, or doubtless v-v, and thus
makes this sparsely populated rim field a bit more populous.

https://www.instructables.com/Lacing-Bike-Wheel-36-Holes-Hub-to-32-Holes-Rim/

If anyone has any matched pairs of ~ road-weight, ~road-width, rim-brake
559 rims for sale, please let me know. My 2 faves right now are:

1. Sun Ringle EQ 21, 360 gram, 21 mm OW, and:
2. Sun M14A "semi-aero", 19 mm OW (apparently consistency varies, but my
digital scale says 360 grams to 390 grams).

But happy to look at anything 24 mm OW or narrower, and 450 grams or
lighter.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Nitto Saddlebag Wire Guard

2022-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
This device is far too light and flexible to provide any support even for a
light bag; it's sole purpose is to be a stand-off to keep the back of the
bag from rubbing the stays or brake cable.

It works well for its purpose, *BUT!* it is prone to fall off at least on
some bikes if held in place only by it's designed-in tension and the
pressure of the bag; mine fell of into the rear wheel, fortunately at
walking speed so that the wheel was not hurt, and I was able to bend the
device back into shape. I use mine now only with a velcro security strap.

[RBW] Re: wheels (135mm spaced rear with freehub) for a Sam Hillborne

2022-06-20 Thread Garth
Just to clarify Peter, these wheels are not found as completes from the
"wheels" category, they are built to order via the "Custom wheelset
builder" with wrench icon, from the menu on the left, it's the 9th category
down, before you even get into a parts category.

While there are a few premade rim brake wheels with Deore T610 hubs from
Quality, they are machine built and hand finished, supposedly ! Yet for the
same amount or even less you can have them made by their builders from
scratch. There's even some 135mm premade freewheel hub'd wheels but those
hub bearing races are likely aren't so hot.

At least with Deore T-610 cassette rim brake hubs they are quiet like
freewheels and the freehub bodies are also available if need be. They are
completely serviceable to clean and relube like any freewheel.

[RBW] long wheelbase, Hillibikes + tray racks

2022-06-20 Thread Brian Turner
My apologies if this has been asked before, but has anyone had any success
carrying their Gus / Susie / Clem / Appaloosa / Platy on a hitch-mounted
tray rack such as the Kuat NV 2.0 (my rack)? I'm about to take ownership of
a Gus very soon, and I'm wondering if there's any chance it'll work
somehow. Looking at the numbers, it doesn't seem like these bikes would
possibly fit, as the rear wheel would stick out too far for the retaining
straps to effectively grab the rear wheel.

My next question is, has anyone found a way to rig this type of rack so
that it can safely carry these long wheelbase bikes?

thanks!

[RBW] Re: wheels (135mm spaced rear with freehub) for a Sam Hillborne

2022-06-20 Thread Hoch in ut
Wilbur knowing your budget or intended usage, I’d say for a bike like a
Sam, I’d get a local wheel builder to build up:
- Velocity Quill rims
- Bitex hubs, front and rear

This should cost around $600 usd. Great set up for pavement and gravel
riding.

I recently built up a heavier duty set up with Velocity Cliffhangers and.
Bitex hubs for my Clem. I did go with a SON dynamo so added about $250 to
the build.

[RBW] WTB: 68cm Atlantis

2022-06-20 Thread Mack Penner
In the last couple of years, at least, the bunch seems to have been
amazingly effective at moving some 68cm Atlantises (Atlantii?) around to
new owners. So, one more time? F/F/HS would be ideal, but if you only want
to sell complete my arm could be twisted, probably.

I've been a reader for a little while, but never a poster, so this post
might have an uphill battle ahead of it. Maybe a brief explanation will
help: I managed to buy a 67cm Homer this winter, and it went straight to
the top of my favourites list, ahead of a 62cm 2TT Appaloosa (thx Jim W!),
a 61cm Roadini that I'm always on the verge of selling, and just barely
ahead of a 60cm Platypus. Being totally hooked on the fit of the Homer, I
want another big one but with room for fatter tires.

Could this work in time for my end of summer tour in the Rockies to be an
Atlantis tour? Here's hoping!

[RBW] Nitto Saddlebag Wire Guard

2022-06-20 Thread RichS
Does anyone here have experience with this piece of hardware? They're out
of stock at Riv but Crust has them in stock. If the Wire Guard provides
enough "lift" it would enable me to use my Carradice Pendle bag.
https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-wire-guard-20189
Thanks very much for your feedback.

Best,
Rich in ATL

[RBW] Re: FS: Shimano Bar End Shifters, Brake Levers, Derailleurs

2022-06-20 Thread Bob K.
Hi Folks,

I was either off on my prices or the world is ending and no one needs bar
ends. I'm guessing it's the former.

Everything is still OBO, and I lowered the prices and/or included shipping.
Here's what's left. Please message directly with interest. Thanks! -Bob K.
in Baltimore

   - Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#1): Beat up but still
function well. Mounts included. $35 shipped.

   - Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#2): Nice with only a couple
minor scuffs. Mounts included. $55 shipped.

   - Shimano Deore FD-M591: This is a "traditional dual-pull multi-clamp
front derailleur." I don't remember why I own this, but it sure seems like
   a front derailleur! $15 shipped.

   - Shimano Deore RD-M591: Good shape. It's long-cage and 9-spd. I used it
with friction levers on a vintage MTB build for a few months. $30 shipped.

Re: [RBW] Searching for bike akin to Quickbeam

2022-06-20 Thread esoterica etc

There's a 60cm SimpleOne frame on eBay right now located in Durham, NC. For
some reason the seller is not interested in shipping so it's local pickup only.
I'm in Raleigh and could help facilitate a pickup if you're interested in it.
Cheers,
