2022-11-19 Thread Junes
Eric, thanks for the report. It was nicely structured and written with such gentle thoughtfulness. Thanks also for sharing your packing list in so much detail. I wonder if there have ever been recipe exchange threads on this forum: what to prepare to eat when you’re taking a ride on your Rivendell :) The scones and soup sounded delicious! Your report inspired a strong urge to ride. JimOn Nov 19, 2022, at 21:24, MoVelo wrote:Excellent report. I have some sport tops but another personal sensory thing for me is drinking over plastic, I don't like it for hot or cold drinks and I prefer a metal edge. I didn't mind stopping a few times to swig some water while riding. I do wonder if maybe I was over dressed but I didn't feel like I was burning up, just sweating like mad. I might have liked a lighter sweater, something like the Wooly Warm jerseys but without the weird cut, fit and pockets (they're great, they just don't fit me right). The camp pillow is great. I would say the Appaloosa. I don't know the tube specs on the Hunqapillar
but I've seen them for one run of the Appaloosa and I'm pretty sure the
Hunq has lighter tubes.

Last time I looked at Appaloosa geometry in my size (54-55cm), the
Appaloosa was pretty much a longer chainstay Hunqapillar.

Re: [RBW] Knee Replacement

2022-11-19 Thread Jay Lonner
Bilateral knee replacements are not uncommon, if patients are good candidates. “Good candidate” is a catchall term for lots of intangibles, such as patient motivation and expectations, medical comorbidities, at-home support systems, etc. I would imagine that most Rivendell enthusiasts have the health, motivation, and means to tolerate a bilateral procedure. For postop pain relief the Cadillac option is something called an adductor canal catheter, which is basically an infusion of local anesthetic (chemically similar to Novacaine, such as you’d receive for a dental procedure) that lasts for up to three days. This targets sensory branches of the femoral nerve, which is responsible for sensation of the anterior thigh and knee. That’s where the incision is, so that’s where the bulk of the pain is. There is also some pain in the back of the knee mediated by the sciatic nerve, which is not affected by an adductor canal catheter, so breakthrough pain can still be an issue. If I personally needed both knees replaced I would have them done at the same time. Jay LonnerBellingham, WASent from my Atari 400On Nov 19, 2022, at 3:23 PM, Bicycle Belle Ding Ding! wrote:Rusty, no, I’ve never seen both at once. Re: [RBW] Re: The do-it-all Rivendell of choice

2022-11-19 Thread J J
@scottluly thanks for your note. The 24F/36R ration is important to me for
a few reasons, a few scenarios. It's there when I need it. It gives me the
proverbial bailout gear. It allows me to tackle steep, long climbs if I'm
otherwise fatigued or in pain. It's easier on my knees and back. It helps
when I haul very heavy loads up hills (75, 80 pounds is not unusual). It
helps me get through slogs when I can balance pedaling anaerobically with
going aerobic. I have as much high gearing as I practically need for the
riding I do with the 46 big ring and 11 tooth rear, and I'm not interested
in competitive riding, even "friendly" competition (I ignore riding mates
who try to foment that dynamic!). It's handy to have the wide range. I see
no down side to the super low gearing even if I don't use it much. I'm glad
to have it when need arises though. I can only speak for myself, though!
Everybody has their own needs and desires.

As an aside, I have not warmed up to 1x gearing even though I get why folks
swear by it. I like triples.

I hope this was helpful, but if you were looking for something else, let me
know.

Best wishes.

[RBW] Re: IRD Brake Lever Set Cafam-S vs. Paul Canti levers

If your budget allows, you’ll likely be more satisfied with the Paul levers
over the long run. The IRD levers are OK, but the difference in quality is
obvious in person. Also, I’m not big on the fact that the IRD is IMO too
much of an obvious knock off of the Paul. YMMV.

As someone with osteoarthritis in both knees, I feel your pain.

No knee replacements yet. So far, a change in diet and rehab has delayed it.

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.

Re: [RBW] Knee Replacement

2022-11-19 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I started working as an RN in the perioperative world this summer. I pre-op
patients for surgery and joints and spines are the bread and butter of my
department. We see a LOT. Often they come in to have their other side
(knee, hip) done and I always ask how the first joint replacement went.
Almost always they report it was easier than expected, they have full
function, and they seem less apprehensive when getting the second side
done. Last week I had a woman with a hip who loved to ride horses. The
surgeon told her she could get back on the horse in a surprisingly short
time. Told her the position it would put her hips in is the safest position
to be in and no more dangerous (falling off) than many other activities we
do in daily life. So, talk to your surgeon. It might be much easier than
you think. Plus, fix it now and you can enjoy being active and pain-free
for much longer!

All the best!
Leah

Indeed. I once reset the rear dropout width on a frame using a long 2x4; a

No experience with knees but I'm wishing all the best to you, Richard. Let

My father in his 70s had his knee replaced last year and was back on a bike
in three months. A stationary bike is a big part of the physical therapy
process.

[RBW] Budget V-brake Levers

2022-11-19 Thread lconley
I just got a set of Tektro FL740 V-brake levers, that superficially look
like the FL750 levers for cantilever and caliper brakes. The FL740 brakes
differ by having cable adjusters (a necessity for V-brakes), adjustable
reach and spring return (a good thing for fully housed brake cables). The
most surprising thing though, is an almost Paul level no-slop feel. I am
very impressed with these ~$25 a pair levers.

Re: [RBW] Re: Granola-Moose Bar?

2022-11-19 Thread lconley
The wonderful thing about steel, is that it can be bent, within reason,
with a little "persuasion". Not as easily as loosening a clamp, but it can
be done, and once set it never slips. All you need is a good vice, some
wood to protect the finish, a long lever, and the serenity to accept that
you might screw things up.

Re: [RBW] Ride Report: Hawksbill Slope cabin overnighter

2022-11-19 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks, brizbarn. Overpacking is my strong suit regardless of where I'm
going or for how long!

I haven't been tested in a laboratory setting but I think I'm sweat at an
unusually high rate. Has always been true of me. I was definitely quite
thirsty at the end of the day and would have preferred to drink even more
water as the cabin dried out from the woodstove. I have some sport tops but
another personal sensory thing for me is drinking over plastic, I don't
like it for hot or cold drinks and I prefer a metal edge. I didn't mind
stopping a few times to swig some water while riding.

I do wonder if maybe I was over dressed but I didn't feel like I was
burning up, just sweating like mad. I might have liked a lighter sweater,
something like the Wooly Warm jerseys but without the weird cut, fit and
pockets (they're great, they just don't fit me right).

The camp pillow is great. Could be a deal breaker for some due to weight
but it compresses pretty well and it's very comfy, doesn't flatten out like
some.

Thanks for reading, Jake! And watching too!

I appreciate it Roberta, that's quite kind of you to say!

Thank you all for the nice comments and for reading along.

Dave — That was the most weight I've had in the front bag for anything
more than a quick ride home from the co-op. It did effect the handling but
I got used to it pretty quickly. There were a few times while climbing
 when
I was trying to maneuver around a rock in the road and ended up kinda
 tipping over, no big deal.

I'm eager to revise my packing to get the weight way down. I've
attached a packing list that's accurate to the best of my memory. It's a
lot. I'd also love to go rackless. I tried to mount the Chest from my
saddle but couldn't get it all worked out. I've had parts laying around
 for
a bootlegged Pec Deck for some time.

Randy — It was certainly different than my last trip out of town with a
fancy hotel stay for a wedding and paid for by my in-laws!

[RBW] Knee Replacement

Anyone here had a knee replaced? How long till you could ride again?
My right knee is killing me. I've put it off as long as I could. It's
almost time.
