Man that's a nice bike, I miss the old flat-toptube Toyo and Waterford
frames. I personally like the stem but maybe it needs to be longer to
stretch those bars away from you a little more, being too close might be
why they feel narrow. But I'd ride it a bit first, the fit may work out for
you after you've settled into the bike.

You gals make it look so easy. Thanks for taking the time to record & post.

There's a Dutch couple on an around the world trip that posts videos on
youtube. They are perhaps mid-30s. They use the same method with high top
tube bikes loaded with 4 panniers, rack bags, front bags, all sorts of
stuff. There is no way they could swing a leg over either end of the bike
it's piled so high.

As long as one can lift a foot over the highest tube this will work. I can
see the potential for trip thru though. Definitely an improvement over the
big leg swing thing. Like Joe, I've whacked my leg on the rack too many
times.

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus questions

2023-02-11 Thread JW
Proud to say I do both of these techniques!

Even at 30 I'm not too keen on trying to "step thru" if I can help it, lol.

Usually with the mount I'll start my pedal at 12 o'clock and stand up on
the pedal to get moving then swing my leg through the frame, as opposed to
starting it at 6 o'lock and shuffling to get started, but the sentiment is
just the same.

Curious to see who else dismounts the in the same manner, it just feels so
right.

I need this video! It's kinda silly that I have a droptube bike and still
try to swing my creaky old-guy leg over the back like it's a diamond frame.
Do you know how many times I've kicked that taillight on the rack and sent
lens and batteries flying?? A bunch of times!

2023-02-11 Thread Richard Rose
Yes, two beautiful bikes. That Samson is ridiculous! Kind of makes me want to try something similar with a J.P. Weigle I have access to. I have not done so because the Clem L I have been riding for a little over a year & just shy of 4K miles is simply the best riding bike I’ve ever owned. There may be no going back. Feel free to ask any questions about the Clem or the Gus I am currently building for trail duty.Sent from my iPhoneOn Feb 11, 2023, at 1:32 AM, Luke Hendrickson wrote:Both gorgeous bikes! Full disclosure: I do not own a Rivendell bicycle. I have however been a longtime admirer of Grant Petersen (as well as Sheldon Brown).  It was probably contemporaneous reviews of the Bridgestone XO-1 that first brought Grant to my attention. I’ve never owned a Bridgestone bicycle either.
Having said all that, and if  you are still reading, the next bike I buy, new or used, will be a Rivendell, probably a step-through: a Susie/Wolbis, Clem L, or a Platy. I definitely welcome any advice or commentary regarding the step-throughs.  I won’t drone on (yet) about build details,
I’ve included pics of the two bikes I currently ride. The shiny 650b converted Sampson is for smooth stuff and the Ritchey for rough stuff, mostly fire roads and double track a nearby national forest. They are both “keepers” (until they are not)..

[RBW] Re: Do your MKS Monarch pedals have spiked wings yet ?

2023-02-11 Thread Kim Hetzel
Hi Garth,

Here are your requested measurements of my MKS Monarch platform pedal with
extensions:

*front to back: 5 1/8"
*side to side edges: 5 3/4"
*distance outside of crank arm to the outside of the pedal body: 3/4"
*thickness of the pedal with spikes included: 7/8"

Let know, if I left any measurement out. I think I covered it.

Are you thinking about buying a pair with extensions for your bike ?

Yelm, WA.

[RBW] Re: New guy in North Carolina

2023-02-11 Thread Luke Hendrickson

Yeah, a buddy gave me the Berthoud (it’s from the first 400 made and was
nearly unridden). I really like it so far and had my first all day ride on
it earlier this week without much issue.

Ha! Yeah, I felt like my bike looked too vanilla when I changed from mtb
tires and was getting a lot of grief from rain, too. I chose the Flat 65s
and just added some brown Berthoud mud flaps to be matching 🤣 I gotta say
that these tires *barely* fit with the front mounting hardware and I have
to be careful with rubbing. I do love them, but plan on ordering some René
Herse Antelope Hills (Extralight) this week.

Re: [RBW] WTB/WTT – Huret Jubilee Long Cage Rear Derailleur

2023-02-11 Thread Patrick Moore
A bicycle built around a derailleur: that has to be a first. Why the
Jubilee?

I built a bike around a hub, but the hub include the gears. I'll be very
interested in the final result; please post build specs and photos.

Hey Kim, could you please measure if possible the actual platform width and
length overall(front to back, side to side platform edges), plus the
distance from the outside crank arm to the outside of the body ? Also the
overall body thickness, spikes to included ?

Thank you !
