[RBW] Brought Home A New Puppy!

2023-02-26 Thread R. Alexis
Got back from a very eventful trip to Chicago. While there was at the REI
in Lincoln Park browsing around. Was at the service area and chatting with
the guy behind the counter inquiring about cable donuts and saw a bin of
stuff with a couple frames. They were going to be recycled and the top tube
was sawed through. One of the frames was a burgundy Trek 800 sport in 16.5"
size, not my size. Was wanting a cable stop for a project. Guy let me take
the frame and fork to hack out what I needed.

The frame looked hardly used. Like it was bought, ridden here and there and
possibly ended up a REI for repair and abandoned. Don't know why they
wouldn't just donate it to one of the several community bike shops in
Chicago.

If anyone wants this for, whatever for free let me know. I have enough
projects without taking on another one.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Hey Ya'll

Trying to track down a Gus in 57, Susie in 56, or Clem L in 59. Open to any
color. Ideally looking for a frame set only, but would be open to a whole
bike.

Located in NYC, and can drive ~3 hours or so to pick up, if further, happy
to cover packing / shipping.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Pedal Question

2023-02-26 Thread Noah Swartz
Since it seems like people here are pretty experienced with flat pedals
I'll ask a question.
I ride flats all the time, but I find that on especially long rides (100+
mi) or if I'm putting out too much power (like straining up a hill) I start
to get foot pain.
Does anyone have good recommendations for flat pedals that are better on
the feet (I'm a US 10.5 shoe size) - or advice for avoiding foot cramping
or pain?

[RBW] Roadini ride quality

2023-02-26 Thread Douglas Toh
Hey everyone

I've just gotten a Roadini 2022 frame in 54cm, looking to save up money for
parts and build it up slowly.

I'm really excited- never owned a Riv before, much less a Roadini.

For Roadini owners, how does it ride?

Cheers,
Doug

[RBW] Re: Toyo Atlantis fit question, and maybe purchase help

2023-02-26 Thread dylan green
Same deal for me - 5'10" - 86 pbh and I had a 58 Toyo built atlantis.
Personally, I never really liked the fit. It was
hard to let go of because it was such a beautiful bike, and did ride really
well. The reach was what got me in
the end. I had a similar issue with my quickbeam (58) - both of them felt
just too long.

[RBW] Atlantis Old vs New?

2023-02-26 Thread Tyler McClure
I am searching for a used Atlantis as my introductory first, Rivendell,
during my fall into the rabbit hole of the internet and bike opinions. I
have been steered toward the newer model Atlantis, but the Atlantis 2's are
cheaper and more readily available. I want to know whether anyone has ever
ridden the Atlantis 2 & 3? I am looking for honest opinions on the frame
geometry and ride feel. I like the idea of riding a long, old, vintage
Cadillac of a frame unless it is very limiting. The newest Atlantis has a
very long chain stay, and I am curious as to how this compares with the
older models. I have a large interest in loaded touring and riding fire
roads here in Montana, but I mostly ride roads and lazy gravel rides. I am
looking at an Atlantis 2 (not local at all) with 26" wheels. I have ridden
all wheel sizes and am not biased toward any particular size.

Re: [RBW] Compact Half-Step plus Granny gearing

2023-02-26 Thread Garth
Funny you should post this Laing as I'm considering going back to HS+G
myself for at least one bike. Also considering drop bars for the Bombadil,
the lower and more forward I get the better I feel. The bottom line for me
is I really like 7-speed, even 6-speed freewheels, and the lack of hub and
cassette choices only steers me to make another set of 135mm FW wheels with
a set of solid axle Specialized hubs(Purchased as a 140mm tandem set). I
already have two Phil rears, I have hubs for 3 more. (Damm shame PW doesn't
offer the FW hubs anymore, one reason I'll never buy anything from them
again... rant rant rant ...). I like FW hubs, having independent freewheels
from the hub. I also have many freewheels, for this I may use the
13/15/17/20/24/28/32 NOS Sachs or possibly a new 14/16/18/21/24/28/34
Sunrace of SImplex, with 26/44/48 rings(I've done before), maybe changing
the big ones to 42/46 or even 46/50.

I love riding the 44, easily my favorite ring in this gearing. On my road
bike with a 36/46, it's the 46. I think many people who have either raced
or simply ride bigger rings do it because big rings and big-ger cogs(24 to
32) feel really efficient, just plain nice.

I also dig 36 holes. Call me old fashioned, I've just always purchased 36
hole hubs and rims, save a few recent Shimano T610's. All my better hubs
are 36 hole. I'd even consider getting a 174mm solid axle for my Campy SR
hubs to use as 135mm OLD. They're just so nice and have been sitting around
since the early 90's.

I know Riv is working on a 7 speed cassette hub, but I'm not holding my
breath that it'll be quiet or there won't be some other gotchas. Not to
mention cassette choices, what few there are, are all wrong for me. While I
appreciate the general idea of manual shifting, steel frames and having
some of their own branded parts, where the rubber meets the road I don't
relate to the manner of which those are implemented by Riv. Kind of a
bummer, but not actually, there's more out there.

Out ‘n about here with no snow to speak of in the Connecticut River

Re: [RBW] Compact Half-Step plus Granny gearing

2023-02-26 Thread Keith Paugh
This is really cool. Interesting ideas at play.I want to see it in action.k.On Feb 26, 2023, at 9:49 AM, lconley wrote:Among other changes that I am making to my Bombadil, I am converting to my favorite triple gearing: a half-step plus granny. The idea behind a half-step plus granny is that the two large chainrings on a triple are close in size so that you can split the difference (half-step) between any two sprockets on the rear. The inner chainring on the front is a small bailout or "granny" gear. This strategy works best when you have a limited number of rear cogs - fairly unnecessary when you have 11 or 12 rear cogs. The rear cogs should maintain as constant of a % difference (step) as possible - this means that the number of teeth difference between cogs will increase as the cogs get larger.I had a Sugino triple on the front - I kept the stainless steel 24t granny and used TA Zephyr 39 and 42 middle and outer chainrings (from Peter White). The 7 speed freewheel is an NOS Suntour New Winner 12-14-16-18-21-26-34 that I bought a few years back for this purpose (they seem to have gotten very pricey as of late). This gives me 18 distinct, non-overlapping gears from 19 to 95. You do have to double shift (front and rear) sometimes to get the gear you want. When I was younger, I taped my gear ratios on top of the stem.I use 7 speed freewheels for the rear hub for the same reason that Rivendell is looking into producing 7 speed cassette hubs - less wheel dish means a stronger wheel. So far I have acquired 3 Phil Wood rear hubs that were either 7 speed 135mm, or that I converted to 7 speed 135mm - a 36 hole, 40 hole and my latest - an NOS 48 hole. The 48 hole is going on the Bombadil to replace the 40 on it now.One kind of odd thing about this is that the chainrings have ramps and pins, but the freewheel has none. I expect it to shift just fine. Rear derailleur is all silver Sun XCD and the front will be either the all silver IRD Alpina-d already on the bike or an all silver IRD Sub-C - whichever plays best with the chainring combination. The chain is a stainless steel Wippermann 8 speed that I have ultrasonically cleaned and Molten Speed Waxed.Bar end shifters will be either Dura-Ace 8 speed or Rivendell Silver 2. If the indexing works with the Dura-Ace shifters - they will be used, otherwise friction will be the Silver 2.LaingDelray Beach FL

[RBW] FS: 62 cm Joe Appaloosa complete or f/f/hs/sp

2023-02-26 Thread gordo
Hi All,

It's time to move this Appaloosa on to someone who will ride it more. I'm
the second owner and the bike is mechanically sound - plenty of scuffs,
nicks and paint blems from riding and locking up in town. I'd prefer a
local sale in the Bay Area as shipping a large bike is a bit of a pain. I
have a 91 cm pbh and am pretty close to the low end of the sizing range for
this frame.

Build details:

Frame/fork: 62 cm Joe Appaloosa (silver and cream)
Headset: FSA 1” threaded
Stem: Nitto Technomic
Bars: Nitto/Rivendell Billie
Shifters: Microshift thumbies (set up in friction mode)
Brake levers: Origin 8 Duo (work for canti and V brakes)
Grips: Oury/ Blue Lug special edition
Brakes: Shimano Deore V brakes
Front derailleur: Shimano CX70
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore
Crankset: Sugino OX601D sub-compact with 38-24 chainrings
Pedals: MKS Grip Monarch
Wheels: built by Rich Lesnik (Hands On Wheels) - Velocity Dyad rims,
Shimano dynamo front hub, Shimano LX rear hub
Cassette: 11-36 9 speed
Tires: Rene Herse Hatcher Pass Endurance casing (700x48 mm)
Fenders: SKS
Dynamo light: Busch & Muller IQ-X
Bottle cages: King Cage

Asking $2200 complete or $1100 for frame/fork/headset/seatpost.

Here's a link to the Craigslist ad with photos

.

Thanks,

Eric

Thanks for that information. This explains all the various options
well:

Shimano’s SLX line is reasonably affordable, and they make an 11-40. More
stuff to contemplate for next winter.

[RBW] For Sale: Classic Dale Saso Tandem Bicycle 53cm/51cm (CTT)

2023-02-26 Thread Brewster Fong
For Sale: Classic Dale Saso Tandem Bicycle 53cm/51cm (CTT)

This is a circa 1988 Dale Saso custom-built tandem with mostly Campagnolo
parts. The fillet-brazed frame itself is in excellent condition with little
signs of wear and no rust or dents. The workmanship is superb as
illustrated in the pictures of the fillet brazing on the head tube and seat
post cluster (photos 4, 5 and 6). The color is a silver-blue fading to
silver, front to rear with a color-matching Silca pump. The components are
mostly Campagnolo. The frame was custom-ordered in the late 1980’s and
built by Dale Saso, a custom bike builder located in San Jose, CA. The bike
is currently located in San Francisco, CA. Would prefer a local sale in the
SF Bay Area. I am listing this for a friend who is an architect as can be
seen by his artful freehand notes

[RBW] Re: 26" dynamo wheelset, studded tires

2023-02-26 Thread Joe D.
To answer some questions I got -- Yes, they fit in the Surly frames that
take the whole variety of wheels sizes, from quick release, thru-axle, to
boost.

And yes, I'll sell just the wheels and lights. That's $200 shipped.

[RBW] Re: The Riv goes "Spinal Tap"

The Shimano 11-34 11s cassettes fit fine on 8/9/10-speed HG hubs. As do all
the larger 11s MTB cassettes. The bracing angle of the spokes means that
the large cog on those cassettes can sit further inwards than the large cog
on smaller cassettes, so they are made with the large cog overhanging to
the inside, and will fit on the older hubs. If you fit one of those
cassettes to a hub intended for 11s road cassettes, you need to fit a 1.8mm
spacer on the inside of the cassette, or the lockring will bottom out
before it has tightened on the cassette.
