Re: [RBW] Re: Let's talk about the All Rounder

2023-03-26 Thread Joe Bernard
I wouldn't put too much stock in the date on the fork; the lugs, "speared"
Rivendell decal and horizontal dropouts point to that frame being a
pre-2000s All Rounder or possibly a Mountain..it's gorgeous! Clearances had
widened by the time of your Atlantis.

Pretty bike, interesting that the Super Yummys are snug, I have them on my 2004 Atlantis and they fit great. My 1999 and 2003 Road customs, also built for 26" wheels, are better "All Round" both on pavement and in dirt than either XO-1 and the first Road custom, with much longer chainstays, slightly sacker head, and upsloping tts with extended head tubes. I say again that the later Road customs ride better on dirt, particularly sandy surfaces, than the XO-1 and the first gen, AR-based road custom.I think -- but I am open to reasoned rebuttal -- that an Atlantis or Sam Hill would be better for all round riding than either

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Garage Sale Saturday

2023-03-26 Thread Evan E.
Keith H. asked about the orange Rambouillet that is missing paint. Will of
Rivendell told me that the chainstay bridge and the seatstay bridges were
moved farther from the rear dropout to enable larger tires to fit. “I think
this frame will take 45s now,” he said. He didn’t say why the top tube and
downtube and head tube are now bare steel, and I didn’t think to ask. We
both just stood there and admired the frame.

It's a reasonable question and I think (if the clamp fits with the shim you
have) that it'll shift those rings just dandy. In friction. If you're

Re: [RBW] Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-03-26 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi Peter, to answer your queries:

1: Is there a reason not to contact Rivendell directly, and just ask them? […]

I asked at the swap meet if the Altus MD311 would work with my setup. The
package is stamped “ 3x7/8 Speed/34.9mm, but the fellow with whom I spoke
didn’t know if the Altus would work with my setup, and I’m respecting RBW’s
Garage Sale Guideline #1. (See above for the photo of their sign.)

2: I bet they'll want to hear what your beef is with the front derailleur they
supplied you in the first place

My jeans cuff got caught in the chainring and badly bent the original
RBW-supplied derailleur cage, so I need a new front derailleur.

3: you're manufacturing a lot of extra effort for yourself without clear
benefit.

I don’t know whether the Altus MD311 will work with my setup, which is why I
asked if it will work or if a better option exists.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-03-26 Thread Peter Adler

Let me see if I have the details straight:

1) Rivendell frameset

2) Rivendell-specific crankset

3) Fairly typical Rivendellish cassette

4) Rivendell-supplied rear derailleur

5) Front derailleur taken from a bucketful of identical front derailleurs
at Rivendell's parking lot sale

Is there a reason not to contact Rivendell directly, and just ask them? I
suspect that the reason they had a bunch of those Altus FDs is because they
tried them out with various builds. If I recall correctly, they were
offered for a while as a build component/retail item; they've just been
replaced with something newer. In any case, they're likely to know whether
or not they work well with frames/parts they also supply. If nothing else,
I bet they'll want to hear what your beef is with the front derailleur they
supplied you in the first place; they may not already know.

I mean, I'm not trying to be judge-y; it just seems to me that you're
manufacturing a lot of extra effort for yourself without clear benefit.

Re: [RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-03-26 Thread Peter White
Modern triple FDs are designed for a specific combination of chainrings.
For example, the IRD FD in the photo is an exact copy of the Shimano 9
speed Ultegra Triple and 105 Triple FDs. Probably made by the same company
that made it for Shimano. The bottom edges of the derailleur plates are
properly spaced for the 10 tooth difference between the outer and middle
chainrings of the Ultegra and 105 9 speed triple cranksets; 52 and 42 teeth
respectively. When properly installed, the bottom edges of the derailleur
will be about 1mm to 2mm above the tips of the chainring teeth when
shifting between the outer and middle rings. So this FD only shifts well if
the middle and outer rings have a 10 tooth difference. If, for example,
they have a 12 tooth difference, and you have the FD high enough for the
outer plate to clear the outer chainring, the inner plate will have a
larger gap to the middle ring and the shift from the inner ring will not be
good. With a 14 tooth difference, it's hopeless. You'll have to over-shift
to get the chain cleanly onto the middle chainring.

So, to answer the original question, we need to know what chainring sizes
are on the crankset in question.

These kinda questions are ever a can of worms. A "good" FD is one that
functions as called upon, regardless of it's name, shape or size. So, since
you have the Altus on hand, try it.

But first . you say you need to replace your FD, why ? Be specific.

I picked up a Shimano Altus FD-M311 at the swap meet. Will this work for my

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-03-26 Thread Joe Bernard
It's a triple with a wide-ish cage to clear 7/8-speed chains, which I
prefer on 9-speed systems cuz you don't have to trim as often to clear the
narrower chain. Assuming you're using friction front shifting it should be
fine*, index compatibility is a whole 'nother kettle of beans or whatever
that phrase is.

* Make sure you have the correct shim for your downtube if the clamp itself
is 34.9. I just picked up a 34.9 Deore (used) that only had a 31.8 shim, I
bought a 28.6 that would fit my frame.

Eric, another nicely done build!
Thank you for sharing these projects. You really excel on your video documenting
of them.
I'm sure the friend appreciates all the work and attention to detail you out
into it.
I agree on the vintage Suntour power shifters. They are terrific!
It can be a challenge finding the right replacement fork for some of these
vintage bike builds.
I'm still looking for the right one for my Austro Daimler Puch Vent Noir II.
Last week I built up an early 80"s Univega Gran Premio from the bare frame that
came with a non original fork. That included fork turned out to be a narrow
.833. I wish the eBay seller had mentioned that.
It turned out I had a suitable fork (of course wrong color) in the parts stash.
For now I stripped that fork to bare finish.
I really enjoy your builds of these vintage bikes.
I enjoy the process as well but I must rein it in.I counted 11 rideable bikes
in my very crowded garage. Most of them are from the 80s.(Not to mention 5 or 6
frames I must decide what to do with )
I hope to get in a nice ride on one of them today.

Romulus was the model that caught my eye and made me want to get a

2006, I ordered and got a Rambouillet 52 cm instead, which I still have. A
little fanicer than Romulus but I hear they ride about the same.

might be called 'classic' road bike. No stretched out chainstays or swoopy

 artful road machines.

The most recent addition—Saluki—to these old eyes, cannot be
distinguished from any of the finest bespoke art bikes we all spend
hours admiring on our computers. Every detail is refined and well thought
out. Quite amazing. We just replaced old no-named rubber with 38mm Pari

no mechanical sense. Whatever—it feels fast and comfortable and is truly a
 handsome creature.

I guess you could call GP and have him build one for you, but we most
