Re: [RBW] Re: New Handlebar Suggestions

2023-06-27 Thread Eliot Balogh
When I made my switch I used my current setup as a starting point. I
measured from my saddle to the hood position and then swapped the bars and
measured to the grips. The bars ended up coming back something like 3-4cm
so I added that length to the stem I had on there. YMMV

You can also use whatbars.com to compare the reach of your noodles to many
popular alt bars. Shows you the relative change of reach.

[RBW] Re: FS: (2) 60cm Rivendell Platypus complete bikes

2023-06-27 Thread Valerie Yates
You have a ton of really nice parts on these bikes. From watching and
participating in rehoming bikes (buying and selling), you might want to
consider splitting it up and offering the components and extras separate
from the frames. Lots of people have their own collections of spare parts
they want to use and many people may want some of the very nice things on
the bike — but not the whole bike complete. Rather than adding items to
make the sale price as a complete, I suspect you’d get more overall if you
sold everything separately. My two cents, for what it is worth.

Best wishes on your adventure,

Val in Boulder CO

Ok,

Fielded some trade interest but nothing that fits the bill, so lets make
an amendment...

Now included, (1) per bike:

Schmidt Edelux II light
VO Mojave bottle cage
Rivendell "Shiny" rear rack
Crane Bell

Let's talk!

[RBW] 1) ISO: Soma Supple Vitesse SL 48s new or VG. 2) FS: Schwalbe Big Ones extralights (450 digital grams), several new pairs and 1 old pair

2023-06-27 Thread Patrick Moore
I am in love. I wish I had met them in 2016 and we would have had a very
happy bigamous marriage in all the years since.

OK, deep breath, I had time only for an 11 mile ride, but sometimes you
just know that Fate has decided your destiny. I have God willing a longer
ride scheduled with a friend tomorrow morning, and I'll use the Matthews
1:1 with the Supple SLs.

This is how that Matthews should have handled all along. There is no more
Big One --or perhaps it's Schwalbe -- wallow or hesitation or uncertainty
in turns. Even the 50 mm Furious Freds that shod the bike for the first
1100 miles or so had that same subtle wallow/hesitation/vagueness, perhaps
because of the rather square profile.

The Somas make the bike feel much more like my Rivendell road bikes; not,
not *quite* that Grant-signature combination of unerring straight line
stability with wholly intuitive -- transparent -- cornering, but much,
much, much more like it; and in fact, the Matt 1:1 may very well handle
much like a Riv road bike with 50 mm tires; I never put tires wider than 42
mm on any Riv or Riv clone. Oh, I am so happy!

Except, it seems I learned about the Supple Vitesse *SL* only after it
started departing the market. I know that the EX is still available --
light puncture belt; but I'd really like to get another few pairs of the
*SL.*

Big Ones: I stocked up on the ultra lights at a consistent
digitally-verified 450 grams per and 61 or 62 mm at 20 psi after 1K miles
on 27 IW rims.

So:

1. WTT: 450 gram Big Ones to trade for Soma SV SLs -- straight up and down.

Or:

2. WTS: ditto. Let's say $173 shipped Priority per pair ($150 per pair +
$23 Large Priority box), and 2 pairs for $323. I think I have 3 pairs,
perhaps 4, and if you want more than 2 pairs, let's talk.

The used pair: F = 2990 miles, R = 1145 miles, but the little tread dots
are still 2/3 there: $93 shipped Priority per pair ($35 per tire X 2 + $23).

If I ship cheaper via Shipbikes then I'll charge only actual shipping cost.

3. What other 622X48 mm tires are as good as the SSVSL or the BO extralight
for rolling, durability, and sealing while tubeless?

[RBW] Re: Quick Question about selling and payment methods?

2023-06-27 Thread Chester
IANAAccountant but the main IRS info page makes this pretty clear, I think:

Understanding Your Form 1099-K | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)

It is effective for TY 2023. You'll get issued a 1099K for any "Goods &
Services" payment through a payment app/processor like PayPal. But not if
it's Friends & Family, it seems.

They have instructions for noting the cost of the personal item you sold at
a loss, if that is the case, so that you are offsetting the income with the
cost and thus not gaining any net income from the sale. (It also clarifies
that a loss on the sale of a personal item is not deductible, but a gain is
taxable.)

Seems like a pain if you have a whole bunch of these sales and do your own
taxes. But not a big deal if you do your own taxes and only make a handful
of these transactions per year.

I'm pasting the most relevant section below.

Chester
SF Bay Area

If You Sold a Personal Item

You may get a Form 1099-K if you received payments for a personal item you
sold through a payment app or online marketplace.

A personal item is something you owned for personal use such as a car,
refrigerator, furniture, stereo, jewelry or silverware, etc.

How you report these payments on your tax return depends on whether you
sold the item at a loss or a gain. If you sold a mix of personal items at a
loss and a gain, report them separately.
Personal Items Sold at a Loss

A loss on the sale of a personal item isn't deductible.

If you sold personal items at a loss, you have 2 options to report the loss:
Report on Schedule 1 (Form 1040)

You can report and offset the Form 1099-K gross payment amount on Schedule
1 (Form 1040), Additional Income and Adjustments to Income
PDF.

Example: You receive a Form 1099-K for selling your couch online for $700,
which is less than you paid for it.

On Schedule 1 (Form 1040):

   - Enter the Form 1099-K gross payment amount (Box 1a) on Part I – Line
8z – Other Income: "Form 1099-K Personal Item Sold at a Loss, $700"
   - Offset the Form 1099-K gross payment amount (Box 1a) on Part II – Line
24z – Other Adjustments: "Form 1099-K Personal Item Sold at a Loss $700"

These 2 entries result in a $0 net effect on your adjusted gross income

[RBW] Quick Question about selling and payment methods?

2023-06-27 Thread Hugh Smitham
Hi,

I'm considering selling a box full of parts I no longer need. In the past I
have taken payment via PayPal which was convenient for both the buyer and
myself. However, now I believe all 3rd party banking services will be
required to issue a 1099k for anything over $600 in a calendar year. I
thought this was going into effect last year but I think it wasn't
implemented. I think this year is different.

How are people dealing with this these days? I am considering only
accepting a check for payment, this will obviously slow the process down as
I would not ship the product till it clears.

I understand that you can report to the IRS that you sold said items for a
loss but that requires additionally accounting, which I can do but it seems
tedious.

Perhaps, I'm making too big a deal about this?

Anyway, I appreciate any constructive feedback.

Best Regards,

Hugh

Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2023-06-27 Thread Leah Peterson
Hi Ryan! I rode the Clem to try out those new tires and they leave a lot to be desired on road surfaces compared to the Platys. The Clem is very good but the Platypus is exceptional, so one of those will be the bike I take. Theft is pretty low-risk where I am headed. I’m more worried about damaging the bike in transport. Here’s a wild thought: bring BOTH the Platys! On Jun 27, 2023, at 1:18 PM, Ryan wrote:Why don't you take your Clem in its new gravel-ready configuration and try it out? Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2023-06-27 Thread Ryan
Why don't you take your Clem in its new gravel-ready configuration and try
it out? Or am I missing something here? Like maybe one of the Platypi is
easier to transport, for example...just a question from someone on the
precious side of the spectrum who definitely thinks nice beaters also have
a place in the stable...and when she was still working, would never, ever
lock up her Rivendells outside downtown and tempt fate.
