Re: [RBW] Why do some bikes just feel consistently faster?

2024-01-13 Thread Patrick Moore
I recall reading in one of the first bike lore books I found at the local
library circa 1970 how pro track racers would wear only thin silk socks to
ensure as close a shoe fit as possibible. IIRC, this book also recommended
ankling and analyzed the reasons for frames becoming soft with use. I've no
silk socks but I do have a PI pair marked Right and Left, and perhaps that
helps too.

2024-01-13 Thread dougP
My wife is 5' 2" & loves her 47 cm Atlantis with 1.5" x 26" Schwalbe
Marathon Supreme tires. I have a 58 cm Atlantis. When I ride her bike (to
check out something) it seems to accelerate much quicker than mine. Rims
are different & of course the 700 x 40 wheel / tire set up is heavier. The
small Atlantis is hard to find. There were also a miniscule number of 44 cm
that were made. A few years ago, during one of their periodic inventories,
Rivendell "found" 2 47s tucked away somewhere. Who knows, there might still
be one at RBWHQ. Give them a call.

[RBW] Re: Bicycle Fan Club now open for membership

2024-01-13 Thread Steve
I hear you Ron...life gets busy, even for a retired bum like myself.

My impression of the BFC though is that it exists as a mechanism to enable
Rivendell owners and friends of the marque to support RBW's philanthropy.
The only commitment asked of BFC "members" is to spend a few bucks on
patches, stickers or apparel. I like seeing that sort of business
investment in our larger society, and I am happy to support it.

For a number of years I regularly attended BMW Motorcycle Owners of America
camping rallies. A standing feature of BMW MOA rallies is a raffle with
the proceeds going to benefit a service agency in the host community. I
always made it a standing habit to buy a few tickets, as did the vast
majority of attendees. I felt it was a good thing. Maybe this stems from
some sort of personal guilt over being privileged enough to indulge my $$$
obsessions - but regardless, the result is still a benefit to the society I
live in.

I will be proudly displaying my Bicycle Fan Club patch in the map pocket of
my handlebar bag and keeping my eye peeled for fellow BFC members.

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO: Roadini 54 Sergio Green

2024-01-13 Thread Doug H.
I don't know the answer but my assumption is that it is the same geometry.
I sold my Clem so am currently without a Rivendell. I've been riding my
Wabi single speed which I really like. Single speed riding is fun but I
want a geared bike too. The Roadini seems like the best option for me
although I would take a Homer if one were available in my size (51). You
won't have to wait too much longer for a Roaduno if the frame schedule
holds true.

Re: [RBW] Re: Silver crank surprise and the weight of things

2024-01-13 Thread Ryan Frahm
I will say I was surprised when I weighed my 2 piece Silver crank (double)
vs the White Industries single that I planned to put on my Susie. The
Sliver was over a pound heavier. I think my Susie was under 30lbs but I
never weighed it.

I usually don’t think much about the weight because of the racks and loads
I’m always carrying but some parts really are just crazy heavy!

I wanted to bump this up one time to see if anyone has a 54 for sale. I

Re: [RBW] Why do some bikes just feel consistently faster?

2024-01-13 Thread Ron Mc
I've made the switch to urethane tubes, too - used to run latex, but the
stem glue started giving up on them.
One problem with Scwalbe version, the plastic stems give up at the valve
core, which is a terrible reason for an expensive tube to flat.
So far, Tufo are my favorites, with brass stems - haven't flatted one yet.
Amaing ride with linen-casing tires.

Nice shot Eric

I was thinking about your shots these last couple of months because I've
been hitting the further reaches of Contra Costa County quite hard on
Wandrer. I've had a dozen different angles of Mount Diablo, from San
Ramon/Danville to the south Walnut Creek and Orinda to the West, Antioch
and Pittsburg to the North, even around the backside Brentwood, Clayton
Morgan Territory to the East. We could do a photo-essay like the Hokusai
36 views.
